INFORMATION / EVENTS, 12

Sherry SilkChief Executive Officer2 Winter 2015 Making Tracks

Well, it has been over a month now since Tuxes & Tails broke records for us. Not only did we do 42 adoptions that evening, we had 960 animal lovers in attendance and we raised a lot of money for the animals.

As highlighted at the event, this year we have been impacted by many more animals who have been turned in to us. 1,700 of those were lost, stray or abandoned dogs and cats. Many of those animals had serious medical issues either because they were injured or sick. We have also seen more senior animals who have health issues that come with advanced age. In fact, many of the dogs who walked the runway at Tuxes & Tails, were over the age of five, or had injuries that we had to treat. One example was little Molly, the mixed terrier we featured at the event, who had been attacked by dogs, suffered a broken leg and was left to die until being found and brought to us.

This year we committed our organization to helping heal as many senior, sick and injured animals as possible and the response from our supporters has been overwhelming. We are also on target to surpass our adoptions goal because of the support and love that you have shown to this organization throughout the year. We can’t save them all, but we sure do try to save as many as possible. It is our hope that, come Christmas Eve, the shelter will be empty. Every animal deserves a home to call his or her own. I hope you and your family have a wonderful holiday and thank you for all of your support. Together we can save more lives.

For The Animals-

Despite her traumatic attack and injury, Molly won guests' hearts at Tuxes & Tails.

BlueGrace Logistics is making a difference in the lives of animals across Tampa Bay. During their 5th Annual Cats vs. Dogs food drive competition, the animal-loving employees collected more than 50,000 pounds of dog and cat kibble that will be used to feed our homeless pets as well as the furry companions of homebound citizens in the area (through our monthly Animeals delivery program).

Each year, the women (cats) and men (dogs) of BlueGrace engage in some friendly, but intense, competition to see which group can collect the most food; the annual volume keeps growing as they battle for victory. This year's rivalry caught the attention of the media and BlueGrace Logistics was named a FOX 13 Hometown Hero. Bobby Harris (pictured above), the company's President and CEO, and a member of our Advisory Council, described the contest to journalist Jennifer Epstein, "They are very, very aggressive about winning, which just provides that much more food for the animals." And, by the way, the cats won!

BlueGrace Logistics' commitment to supporting the community and our life-saving work is an inspiration. What an amazing, fun and generous group of people!

Whitney McKay, Producer of Culture and Community at BlueGrace, organized the food drive and delivery.

HSTB staff member Curtis Lemon (rt) thanks the rig driver who volunteered his time to make the donation delivery.

The "dogs" worked hard collecting and loading the food.

We were invited to BlueGrace headquarters for a post-contest celebration. The employees were duly thanked with purrs, wags and sloppy kisses.

The "cats" were the 2015 victors collecting the most food for our animals!

We are thrilled to help make a difference in the lives of so many Tampa pets and their owners. Our commitment to offering affordable veterinary care so that pets can stay in their homes remains strong. If you are interested in supporting this important cause by making a donation to our Save-a-Pet Fund, please call our development department at 813-774-4306.

Donating to our “Save a Pet” fund will• Save the lives of pets whose owners are unable to afford their care • Keep beloved pets from being relinquished to shelters because of medical costs• Make a difference in the lives of both animals and people in our community

Cow's mom called us in a panic. While running around the backyard, her beloved pup had suffered a cut to his paw and was bleeding profusely. We advised her to bring him in immediately and as soon as he arrived our veterinary team got right to work to stop the bleeding. The examination revealed that a tendon had been severed and required immediate surgery.

As with so many devoted pet owners, Cow's family could not afford the medical care he needed. Fortunately, our Save-a-Pet Medical Fund was available to cover the cost, and Cow was rushed back to surgery and into the capable hands of our doctors.

Just when things were looking up for Cow, another complication arose. Due to the heavy blood loss he had sustained from the cut our doctors determined that he needed a blood transfusion. One of our shelter dogs, Playdough, was a perfect match to donate. He enjoyed the visit with our hospital staff and all the TLC he received during and after his generous blood donation.

After the transfusion Cow began to perk up and recover and his family was able to visit with him. Cow and his "sister" had been raised together; he used to sleep protectively by her crib and rarely left her side as they both grew. When she saw Cow in recovery, she broke down in tears. Clearly, he was more than a pet, he was a member of the family and their profound relief that his life had been saved was a beautiful thing to see.

Cow's injury was serious and required immediate medical attention.

A team of surgeons was able to stop thebleeding and repair the veins and tendon.

Cow was a trooper through the surgery and is on the road to recovery.

When Cow required a blood transfusion, shelter dog Playdough was a perfect donor match.

Cow received a visit from his mom and sister who offered him comfort during recovery.

The 13th Annual Tuxes & Tails gala was a smashing success bringing nearly 1,000 HSTB supporters together to celebrate a shared love for animals.

The Tampa Convention Center was transformed into a French chic-inspired "Moulin Rouge" complete with Can Can girls, flowing red curtains, and glittering chandeliers.

A cocktail hour with live music and silent auction was followed by a decadent dinner, live auction and high-energy runway show featuring our adoptable pets. Guests closed out the evening with cigars, drinks and music by the water at the Sail Pavilion.

The stars of the evening were the 55 adoptable pets who entertained our guests with their endearing purrs, wagging tails and sweet kisses. A record-breaking 42 animals went home that night and all 55 have since found forever homes. The successful adoptions, along with the event's record attendance, *sponsorship and money raised, made the 13th Annual Tuxes & Tails Moulin Rouge one for the history books.

*Event sponsors are listed on page 11

The 14th Annual Tuxes & Tails will be held at the Tampa Convention Center on October 22, 2016.

Lynne AbrahamsLynne Abrahams has been a volunteer with us for more than seven years and has contributed more than 3000 hours in service! She has filled many different volunteer roles and her passion for HSTB and her love for the animals show in everything she does.

She has fostered countless animals and also plays a key role in our biggest events of the year, Bark in the Park and Tuxes and Tails. In addition, Lynne gives her time to the shelter as a group volunteer with her co-workers from T. Rowe Price.

Thank you so much, Lynne, for everything you do and for making a difference in the lives of so many animals!

Holiday Giving GridThe holiday season brings to mind the comforts of home, family and a sense of security- the dream of every homeless animal.

This year, you can help make this dream come true for many animals by donating to our Holiday Giving Grid! Just go to our site, pick a box with your desired donation level, then upload a picture of your choice and type a message in memory or honor of a special furry friend. It's that simple! HumaneSocietyTampa.org/GivingGrid

On behalf of the animals who will be served by your generosity, thank you! Your contribution will make a real and lasting difference this holiday season.

Our "Santa", volunteer Dwight Raines, donates his time every year and is wonderful with the pets. We take the photos in our Gazebo which was built In Memory of his son, Ryan Raines.

I adopted Piper-Rose (formerly known as Currant) on 4/21/15. She was a 2 1/2 month old, 5.6 pound shepherd mix. She now weighs 37 pounds and is the happiest puppy I've ever seen. She never has a bad day. She greets me with a smile on her face and high five with her paw every time I enter the room. I can't imagine my life without my sweet Piper!

Just wanted to update you all on Ana and Elsa’s (now “Peach” and “Zelda”) progress since they adopted us a few months ago. Even though they were litter mates, they have different personalities just like sibling children. We are so glad I acted on that impulse that day to turn around and go back for them just before you closed for the evening.

Bobcat

I was the individual who adopted Bobcat today. I just wanted reach out and let you know that he has found a forever home with me and my girlfriend and would like to extend my thanks to the staff for being absolutely wonderful today. He is already adjusting well and has made himself right at home. Again, thank you and your staff and I will keep you posted on his progress and try to bring him back for a visit in the not too distant future.

-Kevin O'Brien

Hank

August 1st was the second anniversary of the adoption of my big-gest fur baby Hank. He is a Great Dane/Mastiff mix who is as sweet and gentle as can be. When we adopted him he weighed 78lbs. He currently weighs in at 120lbs and is king of the house. My family and I love him and all of his fur siblings with all or hearts. Thank you so much!

-Tanya Trice

Cole

We adopted Cole two years ago in May of 2014. He has one of the best personalities; happy go lucky, comical, and extremely smart. We had never heard of the breed Catahoula before getting him, and by far he has been one of the best dogs we have ever gotten. He loves the beach, his Kong time, and his visits to the Dog Park. Thank you for blessing us with Cole.

• The Humane Society of Tampa Bay recently

launched ‘Break Time Buddies’, a program

aimed at the workplace to raise awareness of

the positive effect pets have on our mental and

physical health and money for homeless pets. • For a small donation, Tampa Bay businesses,

large and small, can arrange a break time where

adorable adoptable puppies and kittens come

to the workplace to visit with staff. Employees

get a chance to relax and have fun, while feeling

reenergized and ready to tackle the rest of the

day. These "breaks" also offer a wonderful

opportunity for our pets to get out of the shelter

and receive some extra attention and affection. • Break Time Buddies is a perfect enrichment

opportunity for both people and pets!
