ARRIVAL Arrive no earlier than Saturday, June 27 unless you are participating in the Program for Maine Students (then you must arrive June 20 or early 21). On Saturday, June 27 there is a Festival evening concert so please try NOT arrive on campus between 7:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. when the concert is being played. DEPARTURE Because the Adults move on campus at 5:00 Sunday, August 16, your departure time is Sunday August 17 at 9:00 a.m. in order for us to have time to clean the campus you must be out of your room by 9:00 a.m., that is, unless you are staying for the adult week. YOU ARE REQUIRED TO STAY THROUGH YOUR COLLEAGUES SATURDAY PERFORMANCES. TRANSPORTATION Blue Hill is on the coast of Maine, approximately 250 miles north of Boston, about a five-hour drive by car. The Kneisel Hall campus is located on State Route 15, 137 Pleasant Street, 1/4 north of the town center. Automobile: GPS 137 Pleasant Street, Blue Hill, ME 04614 Airplane: Several airlines serve Bangor International Airport, a one-hour drive from Blue Hill. Do not fly into Portland – that is 2.5 hour drive to campus. Bus: Please use CONCORD TRAILWAYS (we will NOT pick you up at the Grayhound Station) Email your arrival information to [email protected] . WE NEED ARRIVAL TIMES BY JUNE 10. WE WILL ARRANGE TRANSPORTATION TO PICK YOU UP IN BANGOR. For last minute changes call 917-446-4551. PLACEMENT AUDITIONSOn Sunday, June 29, at 2:00 p.m. there will be a general meeting of the entire student body and faculty in the Concert Hall. This will be followed immediately by placement auditions. Please come prepared to play two or three brief solo selections (5 minutes). Audition order will be posted when you arrive. Group assignments and schedules will be posted Monday evening; rehearsals begin Tuesday at 9:00 a.m.

CURRICULUM1) Each student will be scheduled into two chamber music groups. Each group rehearses daily at assigned times (or more on your own), meets 2x a week with its coach, and has the opportunity to perform in master classes and student concerts at the end of each period of study.2) Prior to the end of the first half of the summer (3-1/2 weeks) the faculty meets to assign new groups, repertoire and coaches for the second period of study (final 3-1/2 weeks).3) Faculty members are available for individual work with students.4) There are no regularly scheduled coachings or rehearsals on Saturdays or Sundays. Weekends may be used for extra rehearsals or coachings.5) When not in regularly scheduled use, all studios are available for individual practice on a first-come, first-serve basis, with priority given to pianists.6) All official schedules and announcements will be emailed and posted on the bulletin boards in the breezeway area of the Chamber Music Center and in the Dining Hall.7) No student is permitted to perform or participate in any musical activity outside Kneisel Hall without permission of the Artistic Director or Executive Director.8. Attendance is required of EVERY student at ALL rehearsals, coachings, master classes, ALL Friday faculty and ALL young artist concerts.

WHAT TO BRING1. The weather in June is sometimes quite cool and then it gets very warm in July bring warm and cool clothes. Raincoat, wool sweaters, warm socks - The weather in Maine can be cool and damp, bring plenty of warm things.2. Dress clothes (men & women) is concert casual; Women: Do not bring short concert dresses. The raised stage makes short dresses impractical. Very high heels are not a good idea the paths are gavel.) 3. Bedding: Sheets: (twin bed size), pillowcases, WARM!!!! blankets, comforter, towels & washcloth. (You may mail your bedding ahead of time.)4. Music stand5. Flashlight6. Soap, shampoo, toiletries Laundry facilities are available at no charge. You must supply your own laundry soap.

MAIL1. To ship any personal belongings in advance of your arrival use the following address forUPS and Fed Ex shipments: (Your Name) Kneisel Hall 137 Pleasant Street Blue Hill, Maine 04614Post office (letters and boxes): your name, Kneisel Hall, POB 648, Blue Hill, ME 046142. Incoming mail is picked up at the Blue Hill post office and delivered to the breezeway area of theChamber Music Center Monday through Saturday.3. Outgoing mail - There is a drop-off box for stamped outgoing mail in the breezeway.4. The post office is .4 miles from campus.

COMPUTERS / PHONESWe have wireless internet service on campus. Please bring your own computer & SURGE PROTECTOR.We have one printer.MAKE SURE THAT YOUR CELL PHONE SERVICE WORKS IN BLUE HIL - not all phone plans connect.

STRING INSTRUMENTS1. Bring extra strings.2. Your bridge may be affected by the humidity. If you have an extra, bring it along.3. The humidity will also affect the bow hairs by stretching them.INSURANCE: INSTRUMENT AND HEALTH INSURANCE ARE YOUR REPONSIBILTY.

ROOMMATES & DORMSAll dormitory rooms are double occupancy. Roommates will be assigned. If you have a specificpreference, each roommate must e-mail Ellen Werner, [email protected] by June 1.

GUESTS Guests must be introduced to the Executive Director on arrival. A guest in your room must be all right with your roommate. Guests may not stay more than three days. Guests must follow the rules of the campus or they will be asked to leave. Guests are charged $15 a day.

SOCIAL OBILIGATONSKneisel Hall is a community; EVERYONE has an obligation to participate in its running smoothly.There is participation in the young musicians program before the regular session or the adult instituteafter the regular session. If you are not chosen for either of those, other help includes ushering, stagemanaging, office help, parking and library over the course of the summer.

RESIDENCE1. Smoking is NOT permitted ANYWHERE on the upper campus grounds or in any campusbuilding. If you do smoke you may smoke only in the lower parking lot.2. The consumption of any alcoholic beverage by minors on campus is not permitted.3. The use of illegal drugs is forbidden.4. Common rooms and public areas will be cleaned regularly. YOU are responsible for your own rooms.5. Maintenance problems should be reported at once to the Executive Director.6. Problems relating to maintenance or tuning of any piano on campus should be reported to theExecutive Director or to the Artistic Director.7. Camping on school grounds (including sleeping in cars) is prohibited.8. No pets on campus.9. Permission for overnight absence from campus must be arranged with the Executive Director. 10. Practicing is permitted in dormitory rooms from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. No rehearsals may be held inthe dormitory common rooms.11. Discretion will be expected of your personal behavior at all times, along with full respect andconsideration for others and their privacy.

DINING HALL (Dining manager is Crystal Dow)Breakfast 7:45 - 8:30 a.m. weekdaysBrunch 10:00 - 11:00 p.m. SaturdayLunch 12:00 - 12:45 p.m. weekdaysDinner 5:30 - 6:15 p.m. weekdays & SaturdaysSunday NO FOOD1. If you have any food allergies or special requests please let us know.2. Do not take ANY food, CUPS, plates or utensils from the Dining Hall area. (mice and bugs)3. The kitchen is off limits to students at all times. A refrigerator is in each dorm and a microwave isavailable in the Dining Hall.

MUSIC LIBRARY (Librarian Ed Power)1. The Music Library is located in the Chamber Music Center.2). Only the Music Librarian or circulation assistants are allowed to enter the stacks.3. Single parts to chamber music works may not be checked out; one member of each group, who willthen be held responsible for all the parts, must sign out the entire set.4. Cds and tapes of Kneisel Hall performances are available to check out.5. There is a large collection of LPs (records) and a listening station in the library.5. Students are expected to take good care of library materials. Replacement charges for lost or damagedmusic will be deducted from your $100 deposit.

HOSPITAL/INS1) Any illness or injury should be reported to the Executive Director. There is a hospital in Blue Hill.Kneisel Hall does not carry student health insurance.All young artists are responsible for paying for their own medical needs.

MISCELLANEOUS1. Young artists are fully responsible for any damage or loss caused by them to campus furnishings,equipment or library materials.2. We encourage conservation of all resources. Please turn off lights and fans when not in use. Do notwaste water or food. Personal air conditioning units, coffee makers any electrical appliances- are notpermitted in the dorms.3. Personal checks can be cashed at either of two banks in town, after being initialed in the office. Thereare ATMs at the banks.4. Students attend everything on campus free of charge; if you would like to purchase tickets for friends orrelatives to attend a concert, please make arrangements with the Box Office Manager well in advance, asmost faculty concerts are sold out. There is no admission charged for your concerts and master classes.
