RIDE. RELAX. REMEMBER.

DRIVEN TO DO BETTERWHAT’S NEW IN THIS VOLUME

Welcome to our 2015 trip planner.

I’m excited every time we announce

unique, new destinations like

Ride Across Italy, or watch a

relative newcomer experience the

Tour de France in July, or get an

email from another satisfied guest.

It makes what we are trying to

do here at Trek Travel that much

more satisfying.

Trek Travel began from a need

to craft the best possible travel

experiences in the world. We

believe there is no better way to

experience the world than from the

seat of a bike. We saw what was

out there and knew we could

do it better.

Our strong ties to Trek

Bicycles, our incredibly talented

and professional guides, and

our unrivaled support while on a

vacation have all taken us from

humble beginnings to where we are

at today. Driven to do more than

just satisfy your expectations,

we’re here to craft an experience

of a lifetime.

Thanks. Hope to see you

on the road in 2015.

Our award-winning carbon fiber Trek Domane with Di2 electronic shifting makes every hill a little easier, every shift a little smoother and every ride that much more enjoyable. Our flat-bar hybrid, mountain and electric-assist bicycles are built for the purpose of making your ride perfect. And we always include Garmin computers with turn-by-turn directions to keep you on track. We’re here to provide you with the best experience you could imagine. And that includes the bike.

LIGHT Less weight means less effort. Trek engineered every gram out of this bike, because when it comes to riding up hills, light makes right.

FLEXIBILITY DESIGNED FOR YOU

HERE, YOU CAN ALWAYS GET WHAT YOU WANTIt’s your day. You decide. We offer three daily ride options, each with shuttle flexibility, and you can always skip a day’s ride to hang out poolside. Our smaller group size allows for you to decide how your day unfolds.

EXPERT DESIGN

TO US, EVERY MOMENT MATTERS“The mix of eating as a group and alone was great. The hotels were in the greatest spots, the riding options were amazing...the side events like market visits and the cooking school were perfect. It was the perfect balance of chill, but organized. Thanks!”

WOWMOMENTS

WOW IS IN OUR DNA“This was our first Trek Travel trip. We knew we would enjoy it since we love to ride bikes. We never expected to walk away feeling that we just experienced the best vacation we have ever had. We are hooked!”

—Elyana, Croatia and Dalmatian Coast

GUARANTEEDTO RUN

AS LONG AS YOU’RE GOING, WE’RE GOING.We’re travelers too, and we realize that your vacation schedule isn’t flexible. You want to travel when you want and feel confident to set your out-of-office alert and pack your bags. Some other operators need a minimum of six or more to confirm the departure, which means they could cancel your trip. And a cancelled vacation is the worst kind.

Page 12: 2015 Trek Travel Catalog

“The level of support throughout the whole trip was

truly excellent.”–Marta, Bryce & Zion

UNRIVALED SUPPORT

NO SUCH THING AS TOO MUCH HELPThe more isn’t always the merrier. At Trek Travel, we average 14 guests per trip. That means every rider gets the personal attention they deserve while our vans and guides can give them the support they want. You’ll never be far from a van ride home or a boost over a hill, and your water bottles will never be less than full.

RIDER TYPES

ALL PACES WELCOMERiding at your comfort level starts with finding your comfort level. Whether you ride for the breeze, the fitness, the transportation or the suffering of it all, Trek Travel has a trip that fits your lifestyle. Some destinations are built for light riding, with shorter rides over easier terrain. And some trips are built for the mountain goats, with high, jagged peaks and epic views. Which is right for you? Start by identifying your rider type. Then, check your favorite bike trips to make sure they suit your needs.

I CAN RIDE... Rolling terrain with some bigger hills that are challenging. I feel great after reaching the top. Descending is not my favorite.

I CAN RIDE... All terrain, with hills and big mountain passes. Steep, technical descents are fun.

I CAN RIDE... On slight inclines, but like it to be mostly flat. I also don’t mind hopping in the support van when I’ve ridden enough.

OUR HOTEL OF THE YEAR. YOUR HOTEL OF A LIFETIME.

Château de Mazan is no ordinary hotel. Located at the base of Mont Ventoux in Provence and originally built in 1720, it became the property of the notorious Marquis de Sade. Fast-forward to 2001 and the new owner, Madame Lhermie, transformed the Château into one of the finest in the region, with a Michelin-star chef and excellent special touches. We’ve stayed in many places around the world, and this is one of our favorites.

THIS IS CYCLING’S ORIGINAL HOME. IT’S LIKE A RELIGION HERE, AND AFTER YOU DISCOVER ITS RICH CULTURE AND HISTORY BY BIKE, YOU’LL SEE WHY.

OLIVE TREES

Delicious ResultsPedaling through the quiet tree-lined roads of the heel of Italy, one is amazed at the sheer volume of centuries old olive trees lining the route. 40% of Italy’s olive oil is produced from this region and with delicious results.

TRULLI

Ancient DwellingsTrullo were originally temporary dwellings built without mortar. Some say this was to evade tax collection since they could be dismantled when the inspector came! Still today they are used as temporary dwellings, albeit vacation homes.

PIZZA MAKING

The Art of the Stone OvenMaking pizza in a stone oven is a historic activity in this part of Italy. The oven first heats with olive wood fire for a full day. Then the pizza is carefully handmade from classic ingredients. No pizza stones. No fast food. This is local food at its pinnacle of perfection.

“I’ve been to Italy 30 times and thought I had “been there done that.” I never expected the amazing trip and new experiences I had with Trek Travel to Puglia. It was truly one of my greatest experiences in Italy”

FEATURED TRIP

PORTLAND TO PORTLAND CROSS COUNTRY USATRIP OVERVIEWBEST TIME TO GO: AUGRIDER TYPE: 4 (Avid) START: Portland, OregonEND: Portland, MaineTRIP LENGTH: 45 days | 44 nights

This country was built by a nation of pioneers who set out with nothing more than a need to explore, and now that adventure is available again. Traverse the northern tier of the United States by bike, dipping one wheel in the Pacific Ocean and then another in the Atlantic 45 days later. It won’t be easy, but the stories you’ll tell will make it worth the trip.

LOVELL TO SHERIDAN

Lovell to Sheridan was a spectacular and exhausting ride! My longest and hardest climb ever (it beat any of the cols in the Pyrenees). The morning was stunning again with the sun rising over the mountains. After 19 rolling miles, the climbing really began and went on for 3 tough hours up 6,200 feet over 20 miles. My strategy was to pedal until my legs could take no more, hang over the handlebars for a few minutes and then repeat, endlessly! It was a relentlessly steep climb for most of the way. The views though were just incredible, an experience I will never forget.

And finally the top...

I don’t really remember the last 20 miles of the ride but it happened somehow - 99.5 miles today in 7 hours 13 minutes with 2,443 metres (8,015 feet) of climbing.

I am so utterly knackered now and have just eaten yet another huge meal - my favorite, cedar plank salmon.

LA FORTUNA

Even meals are an adventure. And you’ll never see it coming. I had the best meal of my life in a village just outside the town of La Fortuna by a small “soda” (food stall). The locals know how good it is, and there’s usually a wait all day long. But this isn’t usual. When we arrive, the owner turns the “open” sign around to “closed,” and one of our guides prepares piña coladas while the owner and her daughter greet everybody in Spanish. It’s time to eat. In a whirlwind of activity, a table is prepared in the back, and before we know it, the food is ready. Rice and beans.

Empanadas. Fried plantains. It doesn’t stop coming, so I don’t stop eating. The rest of the family comes to join us. They think it’s charming that we travel thousands of miles by air and car and bike just to eat in their backyard. They try out their English and while we do our best in Spanish, and for the first time, I feel what it’s like to eat like a Tico. I could definitely get used to this gastronomic dream.

“The Etape is my favorite day on the bike each year. I have done the race 9 years in a row and can’t wait for next year.”

—Tania Burke, Trek Travel President

L’Etape du Tour (French for “A Stage of the Tour”) is a European cyclosportive that attracts over 8,000 riders annually to gather and ride a stage of the Tour de France, over its most famous climbs. But it wasn’t always as good as it is today.

“It was the most incredible scenery I have ever seen

over one day. Every time you turned around there was another mountain, glacier, waterfall, or a tunnel through a mountain. Unbelievable. But while it was a great race, the rest stops were not the best. Some had no water or food. Others were so overcrowded with lines of riders. We had to finish by 6 pm with time

cuts at the base of the Alpe D’Huez, Izoard and Latauret, and that requires complete assistance. That first year, the climbs were so incredible, but it definitely lacked the proper support. I thought, we can do better.

And that’s exactly what we’ve done. Today, L’Etape is just as epic. It’s just as amazing. But when you

sign up with Trek Travel, it’s also fully supported from start to finish, with plenty of food, drinks and mechanical support on the course. My wife Tania and I have done the ride for eight years since, and can’t imagine experiencing it any other way.”

Riding here will never let you down. Even when you wish that the climbs would let up.

We were perched on a ridge, ready to ride down to the coast, and then back up The Cobra. Our Trek Travel guide, Jason, told us before we left the van that the road looked like someone threw spaghetti along the side of a mountain. And as crazy as that sounds, he wasn’t wrong. Sa Colobra is one of Mallorca’s signature climbs, along with Puig Major, Col de Soller and the climb to the lighthouse in Pollença. A simple search on Strava reveals that these are also the favorite climbs of pros everywhere, and it’s easy to see why. Here, the roads feel like Europe, but much smoother. SOLVANG, CALIFORNIASecluded in the Santa Ynez Valley just north of Santa Barbara is a cycling paradise in Solvang that’s the perfect training ground for offseason base-building. The ten-mile climb of Mt. Figueroa and the undulating roads of Ballard Canyon are the perfect way to build fitness while your competition suffers on the trainer. The best part? You’ll recharge in the evening with laid-back relaxation.

GREENVILLE, SOUTH CAROLINAOne of the best-kept secrets of the pros is tucked away in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains surrounding Greenville, South Carolina. Greenville’s riding isn’t fooling around, and neither are we. Need to turn rides into bricks? It’s easy to add swim and run options to the unbeatable riding on all dates.

It’s called Dirt TurkeyGuests are always interested in the lives of our guides. The Trek Travel life is unique to say the least, and it gets even more unique at the holidays. Take, for example, “Dirt Turkey.” It’s our annual celebration of Thanksgiving, where we gather to ride the trails until dusk and give thanks for the dirt, the turkey and the bond between the two. It’s not your normal Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot. But it’s just another day here at Trek Travel.

Handlebar Coffee Roasters, Santa Barbara, CACoffee and bikes go together like birthdays and cakes. We’ve sipped espresso at some of the best cafés in the world, and this one is among our favorites. Started by two ex-pro racers, Handlebar serves up fresh-roasted coffees, cycling apparel and plenty of baked goods for the long ride. Stop in and tell them we sent you. handlebarcoffee.com
