  • 8 These tours encourage you to step off the beaten path and immerse yourself in your chosen destination. Youll usually share your trip with no more than 16 like-minded travellers, though the average group size is often lower.

As above, but exclusively for younger travellers looking to experience the best of Latin America with a bunch of fun and friendly travel mates.

On these trips, which typically have a larger group size, youll travel only with 18-35 year olds who share your passion for discovery. These trips are super sociable, ideal for making new friends through shared experiences.

Independent travel in Latin America is easy with Bamba Experience and Pachamama, whose hop-on, hop-off transport networks allow you to explore at your own pace and according to your own itinerary.

Exactly what it says on the tin. These exciting short tours can be booked on their own, added on to a longer tour or mixed and matched to create your own itinerary. You are likely to be travelling with other like-minded people but each tour is different, run by our local operators and designed for maximum enjoyment.

If you are looking for private arrangements for you and your travel buddy(ies), check out our range of itineraries that usually come complete with private driver/guide.

  • SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITYResponsible travel has been with STA Travel in various shapes and forms since our pioneering days. Over the decades, weve helped millions of travellers to make deep connections to places they visit, and to come away with a greater sense that were sharing this world.

We believe that far from being a negative force, real sustainable travel has the power to create opportunities to develop communities and build a greater understanding between the many great cultures in the world that we share.

To ensure were doing all we can to fulfil our responsibilities we have created a three pillar approach to social responsibility.

In order to ensure that we meet our responsibilities in these areas we have created a three pillar strategy made up of Our World, Our Action and Our People.

You can learn more about this at statravel.com.au/our-social-responsibility.htm

OUR PEOPLEAs an employer we take our responsibility very seriously. We want to make sure that we support the next generation through offering apprenticeships and working with community partners local to our offices through our staff volunteering programme.

OUR WORLDThis planet is our playground. It is therefore only right that we do all we can to preserve it for future generations by reducing our environmental impact.

OUR ACTIONSWe work with credible partners to secure travel experiences that are not only authentic but also responsible and sustainable as well as regularly assessing all of our operations to ensure that we can be proud of how we do our business. We also fund our very own charity, The STA Travel Foundation.

    14

    makingit count

  • 15

Founded in 2012, The STA Travel Foundation is our chosen method of giving something back to the people and places that we work in. By funding a number of projects we are really making a difference to local communities as well as supporting local causes in the countries where we have stores and offices. By harnessing our brand to raise money from our staff, customers, suppliers and networks we can help smaller charities access vital funds.

STA Travel covers all costs of running this registered charity meaning that every penny the Foundation raises goes straight towards our chosen causes around the world. STA Travel also donates $30,000 per year to the foundation via staff donation matching.

You can learn more at: statravelfoundation.com

In 2010 STA Travel embarked on a responsible travel journey with Planeterra. Planeterra exists to support local people to develop their communities and conserve their cultural heritage. STA Travel has committed $1 million over five years to Planeterra and has so far been instrumental in funding a community tourism project in Thailand, water tanks and a river ambulance in Panama, building a paediatric ward in Kenya and creating an art workshop at a drop-in centre for kids in Cuzco.

VOLUNTEERING & THE STA TRAVEL CODE OF CONDUCTIf you are looking to make a worthwhile contribution to the areas you visit, pick up a copy of our volunteering brochure. We only work with a select number of partners who build meaningful relationships with local communities. We have collaborated with them to develop a set of criteria that help voluntourism providers plan and manage their programmes in a responsible and sustainable manner. Ensuring that local community needs are met while at the same time satisfying the desires of travellers to make a difference and create lasting impact, requires effective planning and management and consistent monitoring. This ensures that our voluntourism projects are developed with the local communities needs, and not the travellers or STA Travels needs as the first priority. Please ask if you would like a copy of our Code of Conduct.

01-02Lima / ParacasArrive into Lima, with time to relax before meeting your group. Spend the morning of Day 2 exploring Lima before catching a bus to Paracas; its lively pedestrian zone is a great place to grab a pisco sour.

    03-04

NazcaRise early for your chance to see abundant wildlife on an optional visit to the Ballestas Islands. Afterwards, jump on the bus to Nazca where youll take a guided tour of a local potters studio and a pre-Inca cemetery, complete with ancient pottery and 1,500-year-old mummies. Theres the option to fly over the inexplicable desert-imprinted Nazca Lines. Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, its a giant monkey (supposedly a fertility symbol). On Day 4, catch the overnight bus to Arequipa.

    05-07

Arequipa / Chivay / Colca CanyonFrom Perus second-largest city Arequipa, youll spy the shadow of El Misti Volcano creeping over the citys skyline. A guided tour will take you to explore the Colca Canyon - twice as deep as the USAs Grand Canyon. It is also home to the mighty Andean condors whose wingspan reaches an impressive 3 metres (10ft). Youll stay overnight in Chivay where you can take a dip in thermal springs and watch live Andean music at a pea. (3B)

08CuzcoFly over to Cuzco and spend the afternoon getting under the skin of this beautiful colonial city. Check out the cobblestone streets, interesting museums, colourful markets and the nearby ruins of Sacsayhuaman (nicknamed sexy woman). (B)

09Sacred Valley / OllantaytamboHead down through the picturesque Sacred Valley with your local guide, checking out some of the fascinating Inca sites along the way. Youll visit a Planeterra weaving project in a local community and there will be shopping opportunities at a local market. Spend the evening winding down in the pretty town of Ollantaytambo, whose narrow streets have been inhabited since the 13th Century. (B, L)

    10-13

Inca Trail to Machu PicchuFrom Km 82, the hike of your life begins. With seriously speedy local porters wholl literally give you a run for your money, the trek from start to finish will be worry-free, inspiring and a whole lot of pure, clean fun. Feeling on top of the world youll reach Intipunku, the Sun Gate, just in time to see Machu Picchu appear as the sun rises and the clouds clear. Theres also the option to climb up to Huayna Picchu or visit the Inca Bridge before returning to Cuzco by train and van. (4B, 3L, 3D)

14-16CuzcoTired from the Inca Trail? Not a valid excuse! Get out there and head off rafting, horse riding or mountain biking. Possibly you will need an hour or two of down time, in which case there are plenty of cafs in which to sip a cup of coca tea, and museums galore to wander round. (3B)

17Puno There are lots of sights to be seen on the bus today as you travel through the altiplano to Puno. Spot the traditional clay bulls atop the rooftops which are used for protection and prosperity. (B)

18-19Lake TiticacaCruise across Lake Titicaca to see the Uros Islands and enjoy a guided tour of Taquile Island. Marvel at the engineering of the floating islands and the surreal silence. Theres also the option to visit the Sillustani burial site. Stay overnight with a Peruvian family in a typical homestay village. (2B, L, D)

01LimaArrive into Perus capital city at any time today, relax at your hotel or head out to explore some of its vibrant neighbourhoods. This evening, meet up with your Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and the rest of your group to learn about the five weeks worth of adventures that lie ahead!

    02-04

Paracas / NazcaSpend the morning exploring more of Lima, which was founded in 1535 and retains a colonial feel despite its status as one of Latin Americas largest cities. Hop on a bus for the short trip down the coast to Paracas, where you can sample a healthy seafood ceviche and a glass of Pisco Sour. From here, you can choose to sail over to the wildlife haven of the Ballestas Islands to observe the sea lion colonies and Humboldt penguins. Travel on to Nazca, stopping along the way at the oasis of Huacachina for a visit to a local wine producer and perhaps some optional sandboarding. Nazca is home to the weird and wonderful Nazca Lines, fascinating symbols and designs that have been etched into the desert on a vast scale. Some resemble animals, fish and birds, but all of them are best appreciated with an aerial view so we recommend an optional sightseeing flight to take it all in. Historians debate their original meaning or purpose, and its fun to come up with your own theories! In the evening, enjoy a traditional Pachamanca meal that is cooked underground, before catching the night bus to Arequipa. (D)

    05-08

Arequipa / Colca CanyonArequipa is Perus second city, but maintains a more laid-back atmosphere than the capital. It is also known as the White City due to the light coloured volcanic rock used in its construction. You have a free day to explore here and the top draws for visitors are the caf-lined main plaza and cathedral. You may also wish to pay an optional visit to the Convent of Santa Catalina, which offers a brief respite from the outside world and a unique view into a bygone way of life. Spectacular mountains surround Arequipa and, on Day 6, you can marvel at El Misti Volcano, whose beautiful snow-capped summit stands at 5,822m (19,096ft). On Day 7, set off for an overnight guided tour to Colca Canyon, which incorporates a remarkable drive through Inca and pre-Inca terracing. Once at the Colca Canyon, look out for awesome Andean condors soaring overhead, as well as alpacas, llamas and vicuas. Drive back to Arequipa on Day 8, before taking the night bus to Cuzco.

    09-11

Cuzco / OllantaytamboArriving off the night bus, Cuzco does not disappoint. It is one of Perus most attractive cities and certainly its most popular amongst international visitors. There are great museums, churches and Inca sites to check out, or, if you want to get your adrenalin pumping, then head off river rafting, mountain biking or horse riding. You can climb up the hill to Sacsayhuamn (pronounced sexy woman) or browse the markets for handicrafts and souvenirs. Travel through the Sacred Valley to Ollantaytambo where youll stay the night before you embark on the Inca Trail. The towns major Inca ruin site will sufficiently whet your appetite for what lies ahead.

    12-16

Inca Trail to Machu PicchuAn undoubted highlight of the trip for anyone brave enough to tackle it, the Inca Trail is a legendary multi-day hike. Youll start at Km 82 and, over the next few days trek around 44kms (27 miles), crossing no fewer than three mountain passes. Warmiwausca, or Dead Womans Pass, is the highest - standing at 4,198m (13,769ft). This world-famous trail takes you through beautiful cloud forest and original Inca constructions such as a causeway and tunnel. Take time to absorb the scenery while your porters race ahead to set up camp. Check your camera batteries for the final day as you head up to the Sun Gate to see the breathtaking sunrise over Machu Picchu - enchanting and epic! Wander around the remarkable ruins of Machu Picchu with your guide before heading back to Cuzco to rest, shower and celebrate. (3B, 3L, 3D)

La PazCross the border into Bolivia and ascend to La Paz, regarded as one of the highest cities in the world and situated at nearly 4,000m (13,120ft) above sea level. At this altitude we dont recommend anything too strenuous! You have free time to explore La Paz with its many fine museums, religious buildings and the fascinating Mercado de Hechicera (Witches Market), where you can purchase any number of lotions and potions to remedy your illnesses... real or imagined! Theres a wealth of shops selling fine alpaca wool products, silver jewellery and woven textiles, so take in a spot of shopping before boarding the overnight bus to Sucre on Day 22.

    23-24

SucreOften referred to as the White City, Sucre is Bolivias capital and former home of the Spanish Royal Court, who ruled from here over their vast colonial possessions. Sucre also has strong links with the Latin American independence movement, gaining its present name in 1825 after General Sucre, who was Simon Bolivars second-in-command. Optional activities here include an excursion to walk in the footprints of dinosaurs, visits to a tin barons mansion or textile co-operative, hiking trails or mountain bike rides.

    25-26

PotosTravel by bus to Potos, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with a fascinating history as a silver mining centre during colonial times. There is time to visit the Casa de la Moneda Museum and for an eye-opening excursion to the working mines of the Mountain of Silver, where the methods used to extract this precious metal are unchanged in decades, if not centuries. Much of the silver was shipped back to Spain, and countless numbers of indigenous people and African slaves lost their lives in the mines. Perhaps surprisingly, by 1650, Potos was the most populated city in the world - its 160,000 inhabitants exceeded that of London, Paris, Madrid and other important old world cities.

    27-29

Salar de Uyuni / Salt FlatsThe isolated town of Uyuni is the starting point for your salt flats excursion, and youll spend the next three days in 4WD vehicles exploring the stunning landscapes between the Salar de Uyuni and the Atacama Desert. The contrast of piercing blue skies and blinding white salt on the flat lakebed is quite unbelievable. The colour palette gets even more vivid at the Laguna Colorada, coloured red due to algae and plankton, and then at the Laguna Verde which has a striking blue-green appearance due to mineral concentrations in its waters. The areas unusual landscape of mountains, active volcanoes, geysers and moon-like territory is like nowhere on earth. (2B, 2L, 2D)

30-31San Pedro de AtacamaDescend almost 3,000m from the high altiplano of Bolivia, and cross into Chile to arrive at the small desert resort of San Pedro de Atacama. The town is the gateway to the Atacama Desert, one of the biggest and driest on the planet. It offers plenty of excursion opportunities like biking, exploring nearby ruins, horseback riding and visits to the dramatic Valley of the Moon.

32-33SaltaMake your way to Salta, situated in the Lerma Valley in northern Argentina and famous for its delicious local speciality, the empanada. On Day 13, you can pay an optional visit to the scenic Quebrada de las Conchas, sample the local wines from the vineyards of Cafayate or experience the celebrations at a Pea folklore show.

    34

Buenos AiresToday, youll skip the long journey to the coast with a quick flight over to Argentinas stylish capital, Buenos Aires, which has a distinctly European feel. After an optional city tour, theres time to explore at your own pace. Head to some of the diverse neighbourhoods such as San Telmo, colourful La Boca or stylish Recoleta to really get a flavour of the city and to sample the worlds best steaks and some of the fine wines for which Argentina has earned a well-deserved reputation.

35Buenos AiresThe tour comes to an end today, so its time to say goodbye to your new-found travelling buddies.

Rio de Janeiro Arrive into Rio at any time. Soak up the carnival spirit and pack in as many icons as you can whilst in the Cidade Maravilhosa (marvellous city). Wrapped in rugged peaks, famous white beaches and brilliant blue sea - Rio is a real stunner. For breathtaking views, ascend into the mists of the Corcovado to reach the world-famous outstretched arms of the Christ the Redeemer statue and ride the cable car to the top of Sugarloaf Mountain for an iconic sunset. Strut your stuff like a Carioca (local) on Copacabanas scantily-clad sands, surf off laid-back Ipanema Beach and party on the neon-lit cobbles of Lapa. This evening, meet your Chief Experience Officer (CEO) and the rest of your new travelling companions.

    02-06

Ilha Grande / Paraty At midday on Day 2, journey south along the Atlantic Coast by bus and travel by boat to the archetypal island paradise of Ilha Grande. Famous for its sleepy backpacker charms, lush jungled interior and endless sweeps of platinum beaches, the next two days are free to explore this car-free island by foot, boat or bike. Surf off the famous long white sands of Lopez Mendes Beach, trek through swathes of tropical forest, snooze in hammocks and drink in gorgeous sunsets from the cute pavement restaurants in the islands main town, Vila do Abrao. Relaxed and sun-kissed, leave Ilha Grande by boat on Day 4 and continue along the coast to Paraty. Flanked by lush mountains, secluded beaches and dotted with tropical islands, spend two days soaking up the easy beachside vibe and strolling through the fairytale colonial plazas and quaint cobbled streets of this beautiful UNESCO city. Choose to horseback ride, island hop from beach to beach, visit a typical fazenda plantation or raise your spirits at local cachaa (spirit made from Brazilian sugarcane) distillery. If you dont already know it as the main ingredient in a delicious caipirinha, you certainly will by the end of your time here in Brazil! (3B)

    07-08

Iguassu FallsOn Day 7, travel to So Paolo and catch a flight to the magnificent Iguassu Falls. On the border of Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay, this UNESCO World Heritage site is one of the planets greatest natural spectacles. Meaning Great Waters, Iguassu is made up of hundreds of individual thundering falls that plunge through jungle from the mighty Iguassu River. To fully appreciate the jaw-dropping splendour, raw power and majesty of the falls, youll visit both the Brazilian and Argentine sides. The Brazilian side has grand photographic overviews, glancing rainbows and wooded walkways overhanging the canyon, while the miles of jungle-strewn paths winding around the Argentine side allow you to get up closer for a more in-depth look at the individual cascades. If youve pre-booked the Iguassu Falls Boat Ride, youll do this on Day 8 or 9 when visiting the Argentine side of the falls. Just be sure to pack your poncho if you dont want to get soaked, or you could just strip off a few layers! (2B)

    09-11

Bonito On the afternoon of Day 9, travel west across the vast cattle ranches of Mato Grosso do Sul to aptly-named Bonito (which means beautiful). The town itself exploded onto the ecotourism scene in the early 1990s, leading directly to the formation of the Serra de Bodoquena National Park in 2000. It is still today a model of a well-regulated tourism experience. Awash with crystalline rivers, underwater caves hung with stalactites and cascading jungle falls, Bonito is a stunning aquatic paradise, its waters passing through natural limestone filters that deposit any impurities on the river bed, which leaves the rivers as some of the clearest in the world. During your stay, choose to snorkel eyeball to eyeball with brilliantly-coloured fish in the emerald swimming holes, explore the waterfalls and caves, raft along the rivers or simply laze on the banks and relax before the entering the Pantanal for wild adventures on Day 12. Pantanal / Corumb / Santa Cruz On Day 12, four-wheel drive into the lush wilderness of the Pantanal. A vast area of flooded wetlands the size of Great Britain, the Pantanal is lesser-known than the world-famous rainforest habitats of the Amazon but is Brazils best spot to view wildlife. Overspilling with macaws, caiman and capybara (like a cute, oversized guinea pig), spend two nights at a wilderness camp, taking wildlife excursions from the camp with boat trips, day and night hikes. A photographers and nature lovers nirvana - search for howler monkeys, giant otters, anteaters, anacondas and rare big cats including jaguars and pumas. On Day 14, travel to the town of Corumb on the border of Brazil and Bolivia, crossing into Bolivia to take the overnight train to Santa Cruz. Although Santa Cruz is Bolivias largest city, it has the sleepy air of small town. Watch the world go by in the leafy colonial plazas, listen to traditional camba bands and eat from the tasty street stalls. (4B, 2L, 2D)

    16-18

Sucre Fly to Sucre on Day 18. Known as the White City, Sucre is Bolivias prettiest destination and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Surrounded by low-lying mountains, Bolivias official capital sits in a valley of whitewashed colonial buildings, cute churches and red-roofed houses. The symbolic heart of the nation where independence was proclaimed in 1825, Sucres museums and monuments are packed with history. Spend a couple of days soaking up the culture or enjoy a range of local activities. Choose to hike in the hills, mountain bike, visit a textile cooperative or marvel at the famous dinosaur tracks - a perfectly preserved cliff face of over 5,000 dinosaur prints and one of the biggest collections in the world. (2B)

    19

PotosTravel by bus to Potos. At 4,070m, Potos is one of the highest cities in the world. Once the richest city in the Americas, the silver plundered from the hills surrounding Potos is said to have propped up the Spanish Empire for hundreds of years. Grand churches and colonial architecture are evidence of Potoss affluent past, but with such riches comes a horrifying history of African slavery and nightmarish mining conditions that almost decimated the citys indigenous population. Over three centuries of colonial rule, its thought that almost eight million people died in the mines. Today, life in this resilient and friendly city still revolves around the mines, although areas of Potos remain poverty-stricken and the conditions in the mines are still harsh. Theres an option to visit the silver mines if you wish. (B)

    20-23

Uyuni / Salt Flats Excursion On Day 20, journey to the remote and chilly town of Uyuni - gateway to the Salar de Uyuni and the worlds largest salt flats. Take a three-day 4x4 excursion across some of the most diverse, surreal and spellbinding landscapes on the planet. Start out by driving across the glaringly-white surface of these vast dried salt lakes, stopping on cacti-covered islands for fun photos distorted against the blinding white of the salt and brilliance of the blue skies. Over the following days, marvel at how the terrain changes into giant rugged desert landscapes. Witness smoking volcanoes, flamingo-filled lakes of vivid reds and greens, bubbling mud pools and steaming geysers. Instead of staying in basic refuges like other tour groups, stay in accommodation unique to our trip partners with two nights spent in simple hotels with solar-powered electricity, hot water and home-cooked meals. On Day 23, travel by bus or train depending on the schedule to La Paz. (4B, 2L, 2D)

    24-25

La PazArrive into La Ciudad de Nuestra Seora de La Paz (the City of Our Lady of Peace) - or just La Paz may be easier! Spread across three miles of the canyon floor with houses sprawled across the surrounding hillsides, La Paz is a clamorous and colourful delight. Spend your final couple of days exploring the citys quirks and hidden corners. Renowned for its markets, visit the Carnival Market where locals shop for carnival costumes and the world-famous Mercado de Hechicera (Witches Market) which sells all manner of potions and incantations to treat illness and ward off evil spirits. Pick up some local handicrafts and llama or alpaca woollies to help brave the cold, and silver jewellery and traditional woven textiles for last-minute presents. Theres an option to take a city tour, visit the worlds highest ski resort, Chacaltaya (5,600m), or head to the surreal crater-like sand formations in the Valley of the Moon just south of the city. La Pazs winding streets are packed with fun bars and friendly locals so have one final night out with your group before your trip ends on Day 25. (2B)

Paraty boasts over 65 tropical islands and dozens of beaches, each offering something different, so why not island-hop from beach to beach, go snorkelling in its warm waters or head to an authentic farm and sip on local cachaa; a sweet distilled spirit made from sugarcane juice? Alternatively, wander around one of the national parks to find wildlife and waterfalls. (3B)
