by Lori Bailey
Greetings, Fellow Kosh Lakers!! After another long cold winter with record temps, finally spring is upon us… Let's hope that this spring is kinder to us than last year. What would our lake be without our annual 2 day regatta, our environment committee, who does water testing, loon survey, Love Your Lake and other programs, our mine committee who works very hard with Unimin and the MOE, without rock markers, and without our reps who attend our HMB lake association meetings and give input to our local council about waterfront issues, without a newsletter, website and Facebook page to share information? Apparently it's a lake that over 60% of you would prefer, as that's the number that did not pay their LKRA fees of $25 (per cottage) last year. Your LKRA executive volunteer thousands of hours because they have a passion to make this lake the best it can be. But without the support of waterfront owners, we are wondering if we are wasting our time. So we need your help. We have not filled our secretary position since Jim Brickell left, and we can always use help so we can do more for our lake that we all love. If you would like the LKRA to continue to exist please submit your $25 membership fee. You will find the info later on in this issue.
Volunteers are always needed. If there is something you would like to see done on Kasshabog, consider volunteering to organize it. Some examples of great programs which we have had in the past are Kids' Klub, the garden at the library and the Art Show. No one stepped forward to take on Kids' Klub last year, so the program folded. Pat Moffat who has done a great job with the Art Show over the past few years is leaving the lake and so a volunteer is needed to take on the Art Show. Please email Pat at [email protected] and she will be happy to assist you. Our AGM will be held at the beach on Half Moon Bay on Saturday July 11th at 10 am. We will have an interesting slate of speakers, as usual. Please show us your love and plan to attend. Have a great summer, and please support LKRA. Lori Bailey President, LKRA

Regatta 2015
Wow, it’s Spring. I saw my first robin yesterday even though there are still traces of snow around. We are looking forward to another great summer at Kosh and of course the high light of the summer, the annual Kosh Lake Regatta.
This year it falls on Saturday, August 1st and Sunday, August 2nd
. Mark that date on your calendars. The day starts at 10 am on the beach at Half Moon Bay with water races and land races. It usually runs until 3 in the afternoon on day one. An art show takes place at the library but this year Pat Moffit cannot run the art show. She is asking for anyone to step forward who would like to take over this portion of the Regatta which shows off local artists’ work. She can assist this year with set up and take down and details. If interested her email is: [email protected] On Sunday we have sailing in the morning starting near the old Kosh Lake Marina. The canoe and kayak marathon, volleyball and waterski competitions are on MacPherson beach north shore of Long Island.
We are looking for anyone interested in running the lunch B-B-Q as well on the beach on Saturday. If interested drop me an email. Regatta flyers will be out the middle of July at Stoney Point Marina, Blue Mountain, and the library.
Any students needing community hours for high school who want to help out the two days or for a few hours, please email me. Any other cottagers who would like to get involved, we would love to hear from you. This is a volunteer position and the more help we get the better our Regatta will be. Updates will be at the AGM meeting. Annual association fees can also be paid at the Regatta. Get ready Kosh for a great summer. Kosh Lake Annual Regatta is August 1–2, 2015. See you on the beach.

ENVIRONMENT COMMITTEE REPORT Septic Tanks: If you haven’t had your septic pumped within the last five years, now is the time to book an appointment. Contrary to popular myth, ALL septic tanks need routine pumping. Unpumped septics will contaminate your soil and our lake. To keep your septic working through the summer use biodegradable, chlorine-free, phosphate-free products. Also, reduce water use, and don’t put oils and fats down your drain. The FOCA website is a good source for information on this topic www.foca.on.ca. Love Your Lake Results: We should be receiving the results of the Love Your Lake Program for each of our properties shortly. They will give you important tips on landscaping to improve the health of the lake. Each property should have a buffer zone of natural vegetation by the shore. If there are retaining walls, they should gently slope into the water. Lawns should be minimized, preferably eliminated. Water run-off from the roof should be diverted from going into the lake. There is a link to the final report on our website and a copy will be given to the library. Fanwort: We can all do our bit to reduce the spread of fanwort in the lake. Where you can pull it out by hand, do so. Be sure to collect all the floating pieces so they don’t float off and establish themselves elsewhere. For deeper spots consider putting down a benthic mat in mid-July (not before so the fish can spawn). And don’t motor through areas with fanwort; paddle through please. Unimin Mine: An advisory committee, including representatives from the lake, has been established by Unimin this winter and has met once. The committee will be looking at the plans for changes to mine operations. We ask everyone on the lake to keep us informed of any pollution from the mine --- noise, dust, light, traffic. Water Quality: Tests for both water clarity and phosphorus levels were good. E-Coli test for the Regatta last year was also good. And, so far, we are free of zebra mussels and the spiny water flea. Wildlife and Species at Risk: If you see and identify the Blandings Turtle, the Hog Nose Snake, or the Spotted Turtle please contact Graham Cameron of the MNR. Email [email protected], telephone 613-332-3940 ext 219. These three are species of interest. Thanks to Cathy Ward-Griffin, Lori Bailey, Nancy Bidgood and their team of volunteers for carrying out the Loon Survey. Loon numbers were down; of the 8 born, only 4 juvenile chicks were observed at the end of September. Eight of the 22 loon pairs had chicks. Surveys are again planned for the lake this summer. Loon nests are right next to the shore so be careful not to create a wake which will disturb the nest and destroy the eggs. Fish Stocks: In total, 93,145 walleye have been stocked in Kasshabog Lake since 2001. The FWIN assessment on Kasshabog Lake indicates an increase in the walleye population still be considered below average. From 2001 to 2009 most other species have shown a decline, most notably in yellow perch. Walleye are a top predator and their primary prey is yellow perch. No further fish stocking is planned.
Keep it Natural: Our survey showed that residents find greatest personal enjoyment on the lake from the natural environment. In order of importance to cottagers were the following: water quality 93%; scenery/view 78%; swimming 75%; tranquility/quiet 64%; preserving vacant land 64%; wildlife viewing 59%; natural shore-lines 59%; non-power boating 47%; dark skies 45%. Lower in importance were: fishing 23%; power boating 17%; lake social activities 12%; hunting 5%; ice-fishing 2%. So please do your bit to keep our lake natural and unpolluted.
Have an interest? Want to get involved? Do let us know. Mary Kainer, Environment Chair.

A message from the FOCA Board of Directors Ken Grant, President, FOCA Board of Directors (Big Gull Lake, North Frontenac) FOCA represents waterfront groups across Ontario, on the issues that matter most to them and to their communities. In 2014, FOCA was vigilant on your behalf, beat the drum when your input was critical, and worked tireless to provide positive influence to the vital decision-makers at all levels. On behalf of our 50,000 member families, we thank the staff and the volunteers of the Board of Directors for making 2014 such a strong year for this organization! This year saw a major re-vamp of the FOCA website—our primary online resource—with improved mobile functionality and new members-only content. First and foremost: we worked to protect the health of the water, which provides the framework and the character for just about everything we think of as “life in cottage country.” That’s why such a large number of FOCA’s policy files relate to environmental concerns and policy issues. In 2014, important files included the new Canada-Ontario Great Lakes Agreement and the Proposed Invasive Species Act, among many others. We urged increased civic engagement in municipal and provincial elections, and helped connect you to tools to raise your political voice in your own communities. Despite low turnout for the municipal election in HBM, we now have a new look council in place and they deserves your input and perspective on issues important to this lake community. In 2014 FOCA was also concerned about the pocket-book issues that make the cottage experience affordable—or not. That’s why FOCA participated in the Ontario Energy Board hearings and counselled against a proposal that would have seen most members’ hydro bills increase more than 100 percent, on average. It’s also why FOCA’s Taxation Committee pursued the Ontario Provincial Police throughout 2014 to decry their new funding formula which will burden many cottage-country municipalities with dramatically increased costs, often despite minimal services for seasonal residents. With changes to so many important financial issues underway, the affordability of rural and cottage living continues to be a challenge. Why is FOCA so important? The threats are real, and come from numerous directions – requiring constant attention! The big issues rarely resolve in a single calendar year; many require ongoing dedication and engagement. In 2014, FOCA was pleased to see the new Provincial Policy Statement released, after three years of intensive participation in the Northern and Rural Working Group where we fought for wording to protect waterfront communities from unbridled land development. For these, and so many other issues, FOCA is your provincial voice. FOCA sits where individuals cannot, and speaks to policy-makers on issues that affect your community! Read more about our programs, advocacy and alliances in our most recent Year in Review publication, here: http://foca.on.ca/foca-year-in-review-2014/ Have a question about the environment, shorelines, boating safety, crime prevention, water quality? Search the FOCA website for 50+ years of know-how and advice! Your lake. Your lifestyle. Your legacy.

ADOPT A FLASHER/FLOATING MARKER PROGRAM By: Marilyn Davison 705-877-8031 The flashers and markers are located on the lake to assist boaters. REMEMBER all hazardous areas on Kosh Lake are not marked. Boaters must be responsible and use CAUTION at all times. The flashers and markers are stored on our property during the winter months. New batter-ies are ordered and any maintenance required is completed early spring. Flashers and markers may be picked up at our residence. If you would be willing to assume the responsibility of placing and removing a buoy and/or flasher at the beginning and end of the season, please contact me at: [email protected]. Always remember if at any time during the boating season you notice a flasher not working, please contact me so I can have it checked out, serviced and replaced if necessary. This spring Barry Ash joined the team and has placed several markers/flashers at different locations on the lake. Thank you everyone for contributing your valuable time and effort to this program. Have a safe and happy summer.

Havelock-Belmont-Methuen News To the Lake Kasshabog Resident’s Association Members The new Council was sworn in on December 1, 2014 and we look forward to serving our ratepayers over the next four years. The new Council went right to work as we spent the month of December working on the 2015 Budget and we are pleased to say the Budget was passed in early January 2015. Council and Staff are very mindful of the affordability of our municipality to the ratepayers when developing the Township’s annual budget. Council works extremely hard with staff to keep our annual tax levy at a manageable number for the constituents of Havelock-Belmont-Methuen. The Township prides itself on being very open and up-front when we are developing our annual budget. In the past, Council has spent time on behalf of all waterfront owners dealing with water levels, the conservation authority as well as MNR funding and MNR enforcement issues and this Council will continue to do so as required. We will also keep the lines of communica-tions open with the OPP in regards to enforcement and marine patrols. The Township has some special events planned for this summer that we hope the resident’s of Kasshabog Lake will come out and enjoy. “Celebrate Havelock” will take place on Satur-day, May 9, 2015 at the Community Centre from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. This is a great venue to see what our Township has to offer. The Havelock-Belmont-Methuen Canada Day Committee will host their annual Canada Day Celebration which will take place on July 1, 2015 and will include a parade, entertainment, children’s activities and fireworks. The Township is once again producing a Community Guide that provides general infor-mation about the Township to residents and visitors. We hope to have the guide printed and ready for distribution in early May. Council would like to wish everyone a safe and happy summer and we want to remind you that we are always available to meet with anyone to discuss any interests or concerns you may have with the Township. Please follow us online at www.hbmtwp.ca for information and special events.
