Welcome to the Spring & Summer 2015 Municipal Guide,
prepared for you by the Community Services Department.
It has certainly been what seems like a long, cold winter.
Although we may say that every year, the winter of
2014/2015 has proven to be a challenge for residents, visi-
tors and Town staff alike.
The Public Works Department has certainly been kept busy
with snow removal and more recently working through
frozen water pipes. The staff were quick to provide tips to the
community of how to prevent frozen water lines while offer-
ing suggestions for those who experience a loss of
water.
Centennial Pool in Port Elgin opened its doors for residents
affected by frozen water lines to shower, which speaks to the community we live in. Saugeen
Shores continues to foster our sense of compassion and I thank each of you for this ongoing
support.
Spring and summer are once again expected to bring the excitement of events, festivals and
on going opportunities to celebrate our beautiful community of Saugeen Shores. The
historical Sunday Night Bandshell concerts are being finalized, which are of course free for all
to enjoy, each Sunday evening at 7pm at the Fairy Lake Rotary Pavilion and the Emmett
McGrath Pavilion at the Port Elgin Waterfront.
The Spring/Summer Leisure Fair was once again a success. I am always pleased to see the
community groups grow and offer new avenues of recreational activities for kids and adults
alike.
All the best for a safe and an enjoyable spring and summer season.
Mike Smith, Mayor

Winter Damage
Neither the Municipality, nor the Snow Plow Operator will be financially responsible for any
damages to a homeowners property deemed to be on the Municipal road allowance when
performing their daily maintenance operations. This includes, but is not limited to, damages
involving fencings, mailboxes, entranceways and entrance signage. There is no practical way to plow
the roads without depositing snow into driveways. Municipal staff and Snow Plow Operators
appreciate your cooperation and will continue to maintain the Municipal road system to the best of
their ability. Contact Public Works with any Questions or Concerns 519-832-2008

Outdoor adult fitness equipment has been
installed at Lake Ridge Park, behind the Super 8
Motel in Port Elgin. The install of this “playground
for grown ups” was phase two of the development
for Lake Ridge Park.
There are 8 stations at the park. Each fitness station
works from the users resistance—therefore no
weights to set, rather stations to push, pull, or lift.
The outdoor equipment is designed to be outside for
four seasons. The Town will inspect and maintain
this equipment, just as a playground and any other
Town park.
Phase three development for Lake Ridge Park has
begun with landscaping to the area. The Town con-
tinues to finalize amenities such as benches and bike
racks.

Captain Spence Path
Along the Lake Huron shoreline in Southampton you’ll find a beautiful new accessible trail. The Captain
Spence Path connects two popular meeting points in Southampton. From the flag at Millard Blvd at the
base of High St. to Pioneer Park at the Southampton Harbour, you can now stroll along an inclusive
trail. The trail includes a bridge, which was graciously funded by the Southampton Rotary Club.
Who is Captain Spence? Captain Spence was one of Southampton's two founding fathers, with William Kennedy, when they ar-rived in 1848 and built a log house in the settlement known as Saugeen. They attempted to build a ca-reer as commercial fishermen. However that venture turned out to be less than profitable, Spence chose to practice the coastal trade in his schooner, the Sea Gull; and Captain Kennedy led the 1854 Arctic expedition that searched for the vanished Sir John Franklin and his crew.
This June (2015) you’ll have an opportunity to
meet and learn from the Butterfly Gardens of
Saugeen Shores group who intends to do
plantings along this trail. A public meeting is
schedule for Thurs June 4 at 5pm to review the
plans to encourage, nourish and care for the
Monarch Butterfly, a designated species at risk
by the provincial government. All are welcome to
attend.

NEW CONSTRUCTION OR ADDITION
Property owners are reminded that there is often a
delay between the time a property owner can occupy
a residence that is newly constructed or has had an
addition and when the Municipal Property Assess-
ment Corporation (MPAC) assesses the new construc-
tion or addition. MPAC aims to assess all new resi-
dential buildings and additions within six months of
occupation; however, if your new home or addition is
not assessed during the year that it was completed
and occupied, you will still be responsible for the tax-
es from the date you occupied the property.
The Assessment Act allows MPAC to assess any new
house or addition that has been omitted from the as-
sessment roll for the current and any part or all of the
two previous years. The Treasury Department pre-
pares these tax bills as soon as we receive the assess-
ment information from MPAC.
If you move into a new house or have made some
major improvements to your property, plan ahead for
the tax bill that will eventually come your way. Treas-
ury staff can assist in estimating what your tax bill
may eventually be so that you are prepared when the
bill arrives.

Public Works Reminders
PUBLIC INFORMATION REGARDING THE EMERALD ASH BORER It has been verified that the Emerald Ash Borer is present in Bruce County and Saugeen Shores.
The Emerald Ash Borer attacks and kills all species of ash, except mountain ash which is not a true
ash. Emerald Ash Borer is very difficult to detect early. When infested trees are found, it’s often 1 year or
more after the attack occurred. In addition, there are several other factors affecting ash health in Ontario
which may disguise its presence.
Ash trees of all sizes are susceptible to attack. Larvae have been found in branches as small as 1.1 cm in
diameter. If not effectively controlled, the Emerald Ash Borer is expected to spread across the entire
range of ash, causing widespread tree mortality.
Emerald Ash Borer adults are metallic green, 8.5 to 13.5 mm long, and slender. The head is flattened, with
black compound eyes that cover most of the side of the head. Short antennae extend from the face, then
curve back to just past the eyes. The upper side of the abdomen is copper to purplish, and is visible when
the wings are open.

items, while making a little money. As for signage, the
Town requests that when advertising your garage
sale that you keep to one sign on your property and
one sign at a main intersection to notify the
community of your sale. Don’t forget to pick up your
Garage Sale Signs at the end of the Garage Sale.
IMPORTANCE OF HOUSE NUMBERING
The Town of Saugeen Shores House Numbering By-
law 54-2008 requires all buildings to have the munici-
pal numbers in contrasting colours that are plainly
legible and visible from the street fronting the prop-
erty.
House numbers are not only convenient for finding
addresses but necessary for emergency responders to
locate those in need. When responding to an emer-
gency, minutes matter so be sure that fire, ambu-
lance, and police personnel can easily and quickly find
your address.

wants your input into the Zoning By-law, keep an eye
out for the public meetings which will be advertised
later in the year.

March and we are looking for public input in the first
half of 2015 before the new by-law is implemented.

PORT ELGIN, Ontario N0H 2C0
Carbon Monoxide (CO) is known as ‘The Silent Killer’
“Because you can’t see it, taste it or smell it. The only way to detect the presence of the deadly gas is to install a carbon monoxide alarm” says Rob Atkinson, Fire Prevention Officer. On October 15, 2014, the Ontario Government formally enacted a new law — The Hawkins-Gignac Act - making carbon monoxide alarms mandatory in all Ontario homes at risk of CO.
Now, Fire Prevention Officer Atkinson wants to remind everyone that no matter the age of your home, if you have any oil, propane or gas-burning appliances, furnace or water heater, a wood or gas fireplace, or an attached garage or carport, you must have working carbon monoxide alarms installed near sleeping areas. Ontario’s new CO Alarm Law brings a consistent level of protection to all Ontarians.
Carbon Monoxide Sources
Carbon monoxide can be emitted if fuel burning devices are improperly installed or poorly maintained. Vents and flues must also be free of debris and not cracked or clogged. It can originate from gas, oil or propane furnaces, water heaters, clothes dryers, gas ovens and wood burning or gas fireplaces.
CO Safety Tips to Protect Your Family
• It is law in Ontario to install carbon monoxide alarms outside sleeping areas.
• CO alarms are required by law to be replaced within the time frame indicated in the manufacturer’s instructions and/or on the label on the unit. Some new CO alarms offer sealed lithium batteries that last
10 years from activation.
• For optimal protection, install additional CO alarms on every floor of the home.
• Have a licenced technician inspect your fuel burning appliances annually, (e.g. furnace, range, fireplace, and water heater) to ensure they are in proper working order and vented correctly.
• For families with older parents or relatives, it is wise to help them inspect their CO alarms.
• CO alarms don’t last forever. They need to be replaced every 7-10 years, depending on the brand.
• If your alarm goes off get everyone out of the house, stay out and call 911! Exposure to CO reduces your ability to think clearly, so never delay if your alarm goes off and you sense a problem.
Symptoms of CO Exposure
Early symptoms of CO poisoning include headache, nausea and fatigue and are often mistaken for the flu. Carbon monoxide is known to disorient its victims and is most dangerous when people are sleeping and fail to wake up or realize they are at risk.
Prolonged exposure to carbon monoxide can lead to brain damage and death.

PLAY Bruce Grey
Thirsty for Play
Have you ever noticed that the first thing
athletes do after playing is grab a bottle of water to
drink? Finding the right beverage to keep hydrated is
one of the most important parts of fueling yourself
for active living. Your muscles rely on fluid balance to
work properly and when you are active, your body
sweats to stay cool. If you do not drink enough you
will get dehydrated. This is particularly true on hot
and humid days or if you are wearing bulky gear like
hockey padding. Dehydration can make play
difficult by causing you to feel overheated and tired.
Energy drinks, sports drinks, juices, iced teas, and
pops fill the market and are often promoted at
sporting events – but are they the best choice? For
most activities nothing satisfies thirst better than a
tall glass of water. For extra flavour try adding fresh
berries, lemon, lime, orange or cucumber slices to
your water.
Sports drinks are made of fluids to keep you
cool and replace your body’s water, carbohydrates
for quick energy, and sodium and potassium to
replace minerals that are lost in sweat. These drinks
can be a useful choice during more intense or long
lasting (at least 1 hour) activities, when you are
sweating a lot. Be cautious of portion size, many
sports drinks are sold in large bottles, well above
your actual needs.
Chocolate milk is often promoted as a ‘recovery
beverage’ for replenishing fluids, protein, and sugars
used by your body during exercise. For most of us,
regular meals and snacks can meet your body’s
needs for activity or play. Unless you are a high level
athlete, there is little need for a recovery beverage
beyond water.
It’s best to avoid drinking fizzy drinks, like pop,
or other sweet drinks like fruit juice, fruit drinks,
lemonade, or energy drinks. These drinks contain too
much sugar and can cause cramping or stomach
upset making it more difficult to play well.
Hydration is essential to feeling great while
enjoying the activities Grey Bruce has to offer all year
round. Stay well hydrated before, during and after
exercise to play at your best.
