SAN MARCOS’ PHILOSOPHY OF FOOTBALL
IN EDUCATION
It is our contention that football and other interscholastic sports should be an integral
part of the school curriculum; they are not an end into themselves. They must be inherently
educational and conform to the goals, values, and stated purposes of the school district.
As coaches we must concern ourselves with stimulating each athlete so that he will
want to secure the finest education possible. We must demand a commitment to
excellence and to winning, not only in football, but also to every endeavor in life, which they
consider worthwhile and meaningful. They must learn that dedication, sacrifice and hard
work are necessary ingredients in performing any task that will lead to the attainment of a
valued goal or a life objective.
The athlete in our program is in a favorable and unique position. He is a part of a
team and must learn to work and function effectively and cohesively with a wide variety of
personalities. Lasting and treasured friendships will be nurtured and developed. He will also
represent our school district in a very visible role and we will encourage him to conduct
himself with character, poise, integrity, honesty and humility.
In our relationships with student athletes we will always be aware of the tremendous
influence our position projects, for good or bad. Parents entrust their dearest possession to
our charge. We teach by example. It is our goal and desire that the young men who have
participated under our leadership are finer and more decent persons for having done so.
We will never place the value of a win above that of instilling the highest desirable ideals
and character traits in our student athletes.
Our total football program is built around the following objectives:
1. Contribute to the development and well-rounded maturity in the student athlete.
2. Train the student athlete for leadership.
3. Encourage the student athlete to achieve academic success.
4. Make the student athlete concerned and aware of the importance of his self-
discipline and commitment in all areas of his life.
5. Develop, refine, and teach ethical values.
6. Teach the practice of excellence in competition.
7. Encourage the student athlete to be concerned about his attitude in the overall
education process.

PHILOSOPHY OF ATHLETICS
AT SAN MARCOS HIGH SCHOOL Play with Class
1. Class is respect for others. It is a deep and genuine respect for every
human being regardless of his status in life.
2. Class is having manners---always saying thank you and please---
complimenting people for any and every task that was well done.
3. Class is treating every other person as you would want them to treat
you.
4. Class never makes excuses for one’s shortcomings, but it always helps
the other person to bounce back from their mistakes.
5. Class never brags or boasts about one’s accomplishments and it never
tears down or diminishes the achievements of another person.
6. Class is sportsmanship, playing a good clean hard-nosed game within
the spirit of the rules.
7. Class is seen in your appearance. High School athletes who present a
neat, clean-cut image bring respect to themselves, their team, their
school, and their community.
Play with Total Effort
1. Total effort is this approach-- “I will do my best this play.”
2. Total effort means that you -- “spend every penny.”
3. Total effort is seen in athletes who “go the extra mile.”
4. Total effort does not just happen; you must make it happen in every
practice and every game.
5. When you play with total effort you “multiply yourself.”
6. When you play with total effort you don’t have to worry about winning,
because you are a winner.
“Rattler Pride stands for
Class and Total Effort.”

THE MAIN THINGS
EACH DAY WE MUST BUILD OUR TEAM IN
THESE AREAS:
CHARACTER OF THE INDIVIDUAL
TEAMWORK
FUNDAMENTALS
EXECUTION
PHYSICAL CONDITION - THE HABIT OF TOTAL
EFFORT
THESE ARE THE INGREDIANTS OF GREATNESS, THEY ARE
NOT INHERENT TRAITS. RATHER, THEY ARE QUALITIES THAT
MUST BE ENCOURAGED AND CULTIVATED.
THERE MUST BE A COMMITTMENT TO EXCELLENCE IN
EACH OF THESE FIVE AREAS.
San Marcos High School is committed to RATTLER P.R.I.D.E. - Personal Responsibility in Developing Excellence 9

THE 12TH MAN FACTOR
It takes a village to cultivate a successful team. We have some of the hardest working student-athletes in the state of Texas. They have exercised ferociously in the off season and summer. Our coaches work extremely hard to help our kids become successful. They have been instructed in the latest techniques, motivation and positive philosophies to further their professional education. Administration has helped in creating one of the finest places to participate in athletics in the nation. We have improved our field situation, locker rooms, equipment and will soon begin upgrading weight room equipment. Our parents in the booster club have been feverishly raising money for our needs and supporting us with summer hot dog roasts and program Ad sales. Together this village will cultivate a successful team in time. If we all work in unison we can facilitate this resurrection. We will not create a winning culture if we are not in unison with all decisions. We teach our athletes to put the good of “the team” first. This is hard for a teen to learn but is very beneficial to an adult raising a family, serving in the business world or playing on a team. It is this team value that will help us resurrect our team. Our fans are our 12th man that will multiply our abilities on the field. How many times have you seen a positive encouraging crowd make a difference in a game? We need the support of our friends, family and fans to help multiply our abilities on the playing fields.
The 12th Man Factor 1. Support all Team Decisions 2. Do not criticize other athletes, coaches, or administration at home or on social media 3. Attend games and encourage our athletes, coaches, officials and opponents in a Positive manner 4. Show your support by joining the booster club 5. Game Day – COME EARLY, BE LOUD, AND HELP MULITPLY OUR ATHLETES ABILITIES!
