Tina’s StoryA 21-year-old single mom, Tina, was living in an abusive and disruptive relationship that was jeopardizing both her life and her living situation. She was desperate to get out of the relationship but was afraid that she and her child would be forced out into the street with no job and no support. About to give up hope, she came in seeking help from our Melcor YMCA Affordable Housing staff, who immediately referred her to the Family Allies program (a YMCA Housing Supports initiative).

Her Family Allies Worker advocated with the Housing staff to let her stay, connected her directly with the Today Centre for Family Violence counselling and then supported her in removing the abusive partner from her life.  Once Tina was on her own, the Worker linked her to Alberta Works, the Food Bank and with Maintenance Enforcement to secure at least some initial income.

As you would expect, Tina experienced real stress and depression throughout this change.  Anticipating this, the Worker provided

Tina with supportive counselling, helped her set and monitor her goals and explored self-care and single parenting strategies with her.  Even just the discipline of leaving the apartment for meetings with the program staff became an important strategy for Tina to help address her despair and isolation.

These interventions have resulted in successful and positive outcomes.  Today, Tina still lives at Melcor.  She is proud that she ended her relationship and successfully negotiated appropriate child support and visitations with her baby’s father. Tina feels a sense of accomplishment now that she is supporting her child by working each day, and she has a network of community support. She can recognize and express her feelings and is finally able to negotiate her needs, both at home and at work.

There are many youth like Tina who need our help and support.
