Dear WGO Partners, For over 75 years, the World Gastroenterology Organisation (WGO) has taken great pride in being the Global Guardian of Digestive Health. We strive to maintain this distinction by providing educational tools and resources on various diseases for low resource, developing and developed countries, through Training Centers, Train the Trainers programs, Global Guidelines and Cascades, Congresses and regional meetings, advocacy and public awareness initiatives and more. We would like to take this opportunity to invite you to collaborate with us in promoting global digestive health worldwide, specifically through this year’s 2015 World Digestive Health Day (WDHD) public advocacy and awareness campaign:

“HEARTBURN: A Global Perspective” Every 29th May, WGO formally celebrates WDHD which, despite its name, is now a yearlong, global public health campaign. WDHD includes many activities and events and serves as WGO’s flagship advocacy program. More information specific to this year’s campaign can be found within this partnership opportunities brochure. At the national level, the WDHD campaign takes place through WGO’s more than 100 member societies and affiliate regional GI associations, which organize their own individual WDHD campaigns and events. WGO supports the societies through the provision of related tools and promotion of their local and regional events. A broad range of educational offerings are being planned for presentation during the campaign year and beyond. And as well, a portfolio of tools and resources for both healthcare professionals, the general public and news organizations will be produced and widely disseminated. Through all of this, by joining the World Digestive Health Day campaign, you as a sponsor will play a key role in making a difference in the lives of thousands of people across the globe. We envision many opportunities for us to partner and to work together to leverage existing resources and offerings to make WDHD 2015 the most successful to date. We invite you to peruse the many partnership opportunities presented in this brochure and look forward to welcoming you as a premier partner and supporter of the 2015 campaign. With sincere appreciation,

About the World Gastroenterology Organisation (WGO) and The WGO Foundation

The World Gastroenterology Organisation (WGO), formed in 1935 and incorporated on May 29, 1958, is a federation of over 100 member societies and 4 globally regional associations of gastroenterology representing over 50,000 individual members worldwide. As the only global society for gastroenterology professionals, WGO has been bringing together the world’s leading minds in the field for over 50 years. The WGO works to improve the standards of training, education, and practice of gastroenterology and hepatology worldwide with a focus on low-resource nations.

The WGO Foundation (WGOF) was incorporated in 2007 and serves as the philanthropic arm of the WGO.

WGO’s overarching objective is to promulgate, on behalf of our society members, education, training and advocacy in developing and low-resource regions globally. WGO accomplishes this goal through a multi-programmatic approach. Each WGO program is thoughtfully designed to address specific areas of need in the practice of gastroenterology whether it is training, education, capacity building, providing resources, increasing awareness, or advocacy. Individual sessions or programs are further customized to meet the unique requirements and challenges of the setting in which they are delivered. The following high-impact strategies are how WGO and its partners promote progress and change around the world:

• 23 Training Centers in underserved regions, which elevate the level of practice and help retain highly skilled doctors and other related health professionals in low-resource nations by expanding the reach of, and opportunities offered through, this flagship program.

• Train the Trainers workshops for development of physician educators. Over 900 physician educators from 81 developed and

developing countries have applied this learning in their local universities and institutions; • Publication of over 20 Global Guidelines which provide locally-relevant treatment options through wider dissemination and

adoption of these practical tools that utilize Cascades which can be adapted to available resources and infrastructure. In 2013 WGO released a unique Guideline on Common GI Symptoms in the Community, based on the 2012 WDHD theme; and in 2015 will release the GERD Guideline, which will support this year’s theme.

• By-yearly World Congress of Gastroenterology as well as other regional interim meetings and courses in partnership with

member societies, regional associations, and other related organizations; • Outreach Program which aims to equip WGO Training Centers for primary and enhanced training and home institutions of

WGO trainees with endoscopic instruments, and; • Advocacy and Public Awareness campaigns , most prominent of which is World Digestive Health Day (WDHD), an annual,

yearlong public health campaign. These programs represent an unprecedented level of collaboration between WGO, its member societies, industry, and government through financial support, donation of equipment and supplies, curriculum development, and general awareness of the importance of maintaining digestive health.

WGO Serving the World. As the global guardian of digestive health, WGO is uniquely positioned to be a catalyst for change.

Unparalleled Reach. More than 100 member societies representing over 50,000 practitioners worldwide.

Proven Track Record. Experience in convening leaders from practice and education for the World Congress of Gastroenterology.

The Logical Choice . WGO is the only place to go to deliver programs on a global scale because of our exquisite focus and ability to make an impact.

WDHD 2015: Heartburn: A Global Perspective WDHD 2015 Campaign Overview Dear Colleagues, Heartburn has been identified, in numerous high-impact guidelines, as one of the cardinal symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Indeed, for practical purposes, heartburn, with or without regurgitation, is considered to be diagnostic of GERD, at least as a basis for initial management. The prevalence of GERD is increasing worldwide although there are marked differences in the reported prevalence, ranging from 2.5% to 6.6% in Eastern Asia up to 13.8% to 25.8% in North America. The reason for the increasing prevalence of GERD is not entirely clear, but it appears to be correlated with the increasing prevalence of obesity in many countries and, perhaps, to other dietary factors. GERD is associated with a significant impact on health-related quality of life and reduction in personal and work-related productivity; it is, also, associated with a greater risk of Barrett’s esophagus, a pre-malignant condition that may progress to esophageal adenocarcinoma. Fortunately, GERD can, generally, be treated safely and effectively with acid suppression medications whilst surgical anti-reflux therapy is, also, effective. However, the investigation and treatment of GERD can be costly and the management of GERD patients has to be optimized, in many jurisdictions, in the context of the many other pressures on the healthcare system. Heartburn is, thus, the key presenting symptom of a very common condition – GERD – that has major implications for individuals and healthcare systems. Despite this, the sensitivity and specificity of heartburn rarely exceed 70-75% for the diagnosis of GERD; a substantial proportion of GERD patients do not have heartburn and, conversely, a substantial proportion of individuals with heartburn do not have GERD. It is, therefore, important to recognize that heartburn may be the presenting feature of other conditions ranging from functional heartburn to eosinophilic esophagitis and motility disorders such as achalasia, as well as extra-esophageal conditions, including ischemic heart disease. Furthermore, although the term ‘heartburn’ is widely recognized, it may be understood differently by different patients and healthcare providers in different linguistic, social and cultural settings. The World Gastroenterology Organisation (WGO) wishes to raise awareness of heartburn and to provide a broad overview on this common symptom by providing gastroenterologists and, hence their patients and the lay public, with an understanding of the latest basic and clinical research in the pathogenesis, investigation and treatment of esophageal symptoms. “Heartburn: A Global Perspective,” the WGO campaign for World Digestive Health Day 2015, seeks to translate research into clinical practice and facilitate communication between healthcare providers, healthcare payers and heartburn sufferers to ensure that patients receive appropriate dietary and lifestyle advice as well as appropriate investigations and treatment, relevant to their condition and circumstances. The WGO’s task will be supported by the development of educational and training materials, around the world, in collaboration with WGO Member Societies and by the concurrent development and publication of the WGO Cascades Guidelines on the Management of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease. My colleagues and I from the WDHD 2015 Steering Committee look forward to a productive and successful campaign in providing a global perspective on the management of heartburn. Yours sincerely, David Armstrong, MB BChir Chair, WDHD 2015 Hamilton, Canada

Partnership Opportunity Overview WGO International Task Force Summit: Heartburn: A G lobal Perspective

General Concept: The essence of the mandate of the WGO Global Task Force on Heartburn: A Global Perspective, is to raise awareness of heartburn and to provide a broad overview on this common symptom by providing gastroenterologists and, hence their patients and the lay public, with an understanding of the latest basic and clinical research in the pathogenesis, investigation and treatment of esophageal symptoms. “Heartburn: A Global Perspective,” seeks to translate research into clinical practice and facilitate communication between healthcare providers, healthcare payers and heartburn sufferers to ensure that patients receive appropriate dietary and lifestyle advice as well as appropriate investigations and treatment, relevant to their condition and circumstances. Goal of the WGO Global Task Force: The Task Force goal is completion of a special report and consensus document and related educational tools for distribution to WGO’s more than 100 WGO member societies and for general dissemination to physicians, pharmacists and other healthcare professionals, governmental agencies, nongovernmental organizations, media and the general public. The presentation of the Task Force findings will take place at a special WGO satellite symposium at a major GI meeting. International Summit Overview and Format: A Global Summit and Workshop will bring together leading experts from around the world in GI disease diagnosis and management to assess the impact heartburn has on ones health in order to better inform gastroenterologists, healthcare professionals and the general public on how to maintain a healthy diet. In keeping with the mission of WGO, this Summit aims to draw attention to areas of need and less resource privileged. A one day workshop, ideally organized during a major GI meeting or as a standalone event, will be attended by invited experts in the field selected from all geographic regions. Participants will be tasked with completing a consensus statement and educational tool for distribution to all WGO member societies and for broader distribution. Key topics:

• What do we know about the impact that heartburn has on general health? • Role and Impact of heartburn • How does diet affect heartburn?

Proposed Outcome Tools and Other Deliverables:

• A global definition of heartburn and GERD • Separating the truths from the untruths • A summary of current understanding of causation and an identification of knowledge gaps and proposals for further research • Proceedings, published and translated, including a statement on the problems related to an unhealthy diet and the research

and proposals on how these can be resolved (inclusion of statistics, causes, cultural differences regarding identification, and maintenance.) Supporting partners will be acknowledged on the manuscript with the following language: “developed by WGO in collaboration with….”

• A global approach to diagnosis and management (WGO Cascade) • Key facts about the make-up of heartburn: What does it consist of? What affect does it play in every day life? Why is WDHD

important? What are the recommendations for good digestive health (for example, a top 10 list of key recommendations)? • A community based survey that will allow consumers and the general public to assess their knowledge on heartburn and

GERD to find where the gaps are, and provide guidance on the effects that diet, probiotics and antibiotics play in ones everyday health.

• Media kit, press releases, and additional promotional activities in various media (television, radio and more extensive print media penetration may be coordinated at an additional cost to the interested supporting partner)

• DVD, webinar key presentations and findings (may be coordinated at an additional cost to the interested supporting partner) Symposium Overview The WDHD 2015 International Symposium on Heartburn: A Global Perspective will consist of a 90-120 minute session that will seek to translate research into clinical practice and facilitate communication between healthcare providers, healthcare payers and heartburn sufferers to ensure that patients receive appropriate dietary and lifestyle advice as well as appropriate investigations and treatment, relevant to their condition and circumstances. Obviously strategies will vary in different parts of the world, and the symposium will take this aspect, particularly prevalence and impact on different societies and cultures, into consideration, and will aim to draw attention to areas of need and less resource privileged. The symposium will also include presentations on some of the very latest information on the causes and investigation of heartburn.

Partnership Opportunity Overview Global Guidelines and Cascades and WGO Documents

About the WGO Global Guidelines and Cascades A library of over twenty (20) WGO Global Guidelines has been published and written from a viewpoint of application around the world, unlike other medical guidelines which are targeted to specific regions or countries. WGO is the only international organization with this type of global focus. Each guideline includes reference to other relevant guidelines which are identified, summarized, and republished or cited by WGO for the benefit of the practitioner.

The WGO Guidelines are unique because they utilize “Cascades” which provide various diagnosis and evidence-based treatment options that are scalable to available local resources and infrastructure in countries with varying resources. Cascades made the WGO guidelines globally applicable by identifying multiple ways of achieving the best possible outcome by taking the available resources into account. In addition, each guideline review team includes non-Western experts with direct knowledge of conditions in various regions around the world to ensure the applicability of the procedures under a variety of circumstances. To date, WGO has published numerous Guidelines and Cascades which support WDHD, including Coping with Common GI Symptoms in the Community, Probiotics-prebiotics, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, NASH-NAFLD, Acute Diarrhea and H. pylori. To support the 2015 heartburn theme, WGO will be releasing a Guideline on GERD. WGO Guidelines and Cascades are available in English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, Mandarin and Russian on the WGO website, at www.worldgastroenterology.org/global-guidelines.html. How Can You Partner with WGO in the Development of the New Guideline and Cascade? The WGO Global Guidelines and Cascades are a popular and vital tool for physicians and other healthcare practitioners and have also been a useful promotional resource for sales teams! We offer a variety of ways for you to partner with WGO to disseminate this important tool:

I. Opportunity to translate, reproduce and distribute in print as a practical “pocket” or other print format of the Guideline and Cascade that healthcare providers can keep handy at all times for easy reference

II. Opportunity to translate and distribute electronica lly the Guidelines (via email) to recipients of choice or via a web-

based publishing forum Educational Programming Based on the Guideline and Cascades Interested partners have the opportunity to support a 60, 90 or 120 minute, topic-specific seminar concentrating on one Guideline/Cascade at a time. Seminar content would be developed and presented by the authors of the original Guideline and Cascade, that is, those individuals who have had major input into the development of the Guideline/Cascade. Additional subject matter experts will be engaged as necessary. Seminars will ideally be held adjacent to or as part of other major GI meetings to promote cost efficiencies. A registration fee for participants will be considered.
