2015 Papal Visit: White House Visit and Parade Closures and Alternate Routes – September 23rd

Internal Closure Boundaries
Downtown Road closures will be in effect throughout the AM Rush in the vicinity of the White House and the National Mall.
o Closures surrounding the White House will extend from 14th
Street, NW to 18th
Street, NW between “Eye” Street and Constitution Ave
o Roadways in and around the National Mall will be closed from 23rd
Street to 7th
Street.
o Constitution Avenue will be closed from 23rd
Street, NW to 12th
Street, NW; Independence Avenue is expected to remain open.
Westbound Constitution Avenue between 19
th Street and 23
rd Street will be open to traffic flowing from southbound 19
th Street.
o 23rd
Street, the 12th
Street tunnel and 7th
Street will remain open.
Motorists reaching closures inside the District will be directed away from the closure by DDOT or MPD forces.
Major Entry Point Closures
14th
Street will be closed at Independence Avenue.
o Northbound traffic from the 14th
Street Bridge should divert onto the Southeast/Southwest Freeway:
HOV lane users are encouraged to exit to I-395/3
rd
Street Tunnel to reach Downtown destinations north of the National Mall. General Purpose lane users are encouraged to exit to the 12
th Street expressway to reach Downtown destinations north of the
National Mall.
Eastbound Constitution Avenue will be closed at 23rd
Street
o Eastbound Traffic from the Theodore Roosevelt Bridge will not be able to access 23rd
Street or Constitution Avenue
Motorists with destinations north of the National Mall should take the I-66/E Street Exit.
Motorists with destinations south of the National Mall should take the Independence Avenue Exit.
Lincoln Circle will be closed at Henry Bacon Drive – no access to Constitution Avenue.
o Eastbound traffic from Arlington Memorial Bridge can continue northbound along 23rd
Street.
