RECOMMENDED BIKE SAFETY INSPECTION While we are not requiring it, we strongly recommend that you have your athlete’s bike safety inspected at your local bike shop. Please note that there is no form to complete or turn in. !Per USA Triathlon’s Supplemental Youth Rules, “The bicycle must be road worthy and in safe operating condition. Race officials reserve the right to disallow any bicycle deemed unsafe.” !RACE LOCATION & DIRECTIONS Knill’s Farm Market 4001 W. Watersville Road Mount Airy, MD 21771 !To minimize traffic on the narrow road through the farm, everyone is asked to use the entrance on Ridge Road (MD 27) opposite Watkins Park. Click here for a Google map. !PARKING

Do not park on the grass at Knill’s Farm Market. Please park in the church parking lot adjacent to Knill’s Farm Market only. This allows us to minimize our event’s impact on the farm as well as leave this area open to patrons of Knill’s Farm Market. Athletes must have their helmet on and buckle fastened anytime they are riding their bike including to/from the parking area. This is a USA Triathlon rule. !RACE DAY CHECK IN Check in will take place on race day at the race venue from 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. only. All athletes must check in during this time.

supporters will not be allowed. No rude, abusive, or discourteous language or behavior will be tolerated.

• Participants must complete the prescribed course in its entirety. • No unauthorized assistance of any kind is allowed. Parents or other non-participants

may not run or ride a bicycle with a participant nor may they provide participants any food, fluid, or equipment aid during competition. !

closes for competition to begin, only participants and race officials may enter transition. Finishers may not retrieve gear until all participants have finished the cycling portion and have begun the run.

TRANSITION AREA Transition will open at 12 p.m. on Saturday, October 24. All athletes must exit the transition area at 1:35 p.m. for the pre-race meeting. After 1:50 p.m., only athletes and volunteers will be allowed within the transition area. !Athletes may not remove their bikes or gear from the transition area until the last athlete has started the second run. This is in the interest of safety and good sportsmanship. It’s also a USA Triathlon rule. All bikes and gear must be removed from the transition area by 3:45 p.m. !The Kids Adventure BOOathlon at Knill’s Farm Market will have an “open” transition area meaning athletes may set up their transition space anywhere within the fenced transition area. All athletes will travel the full length of transition from Run Finish to Bike Start, and Bike Finish to Run Start. There is a maximum of seven bikes per rack. Athletes should alternate their bikes. !We encourage parents to allow their athletes to set up their transition area unassisted. There will be volunteers in transition should your athlete need help. !Athletes are reminded to be considerate of their fellow competitors and share transition space. Personal markers (balloons, inflatables, flags, etc.) within the transition area are prohibited and will be removed. All bar ends must be plugged (we will have a limited number of bar end plugs available). Glass containers are prohibited in transition. !BODY MARKING We will not be body marking at the Kids Adventure BOOathlon at Knill’s Farm Market. !RACE BIBS We encourage parents/guardians to write their race day emergency contact information (e.g. name, mobile number) on the back of their athlete’s race bib. The race bib must be worn throughout the race, either safety-pinned to a shirt or attached to a race belt. Do not safety pin the tear off tabs on the bottom of the bib.

WAVE START TIME(S) We may split the field at the start line into two or three waves based upon age, with our older athletes starting first followed by our younger athletes. The first wave is scheduled to start at 2 p.m. !For everyone’s safety, if an older sibling would like to go through the course with a younger brother or sister, we will have them start with the younger group rather than move the younger sibling up to the older group. !RACE FORMAT The Kids Adventure BOOathlon at Knill’s Farm Market follows a traditional duathlon format of run–bike–run consisting of a .75 mile run, 2 mile bike and a .5 mile run.

ADVENTURES

KAB RUN COURSE #2 6–15 YEAR OLDS .5 MILES Being a working farm, the course is subject to change.

ADVENTURES While we have been somewhat tight–lipped about our adventures, we can tell you that we have designed each adventure with all of our athletes in mind. Each adventure will be staffed by a volunteer, and should an athlete decide not to complete an adventure they may go around it. The Kids Adventure BOOathlon at Knill’s Farm Market is not timed—we want every athlete to experience each adventure at his or her own pace. Following are some examples of the types of adventures your athlete might encounter: !• Maze • Slack line • Army crawl • Climbing over straw bales • Climbing up and over a wall • Walking along a teeter totter • Guessing the number of candies in a jar !Each year we consider building a mud pit. We can confirm there is no mud pit, but your athlete will get a little dirty—it is a farm after all. An old pair of clothes and running shoes is best, and a towel to sit on for the car ride home is recommended. !If you have any questions specific to the adventures, or your athlete is experiencing any anxiety over them, do not hesitate to contact the Race Director by email at [email protected].

KAB ATHLETE GUIDE COWPYRIGHT 2011–2015 ONE TWO THREE EVENTS, LLC. PAGE = OF =14 17

TIMING To make sure we keep the “adventure” in the Kids Adventure BOOathlon at Knill’s Farm Market, we will not be timing this event. We want every athlete to experience each adventure at his or her own pace. !WATER STATION A single water station will be set up outside the transition area. Athletes will pass this water station after the first run as they enter transition, and after the bike as they exit transition to begin the second run. !FIRST AID We will have a first aid kit under the MINI COW TRI CLUB tent. In the event of an emergency, staff and volunteers have been instructed to dial 911. The Mount Airy Volunteer Fire Company is less than one mile away. !INCLEMENT WEATHER & DISASTER POLICY There is no rain date for this event. In the case of inclement weather the Race Director reserves the right to modify the race course and/or race. If the race is canceled due to weather, natural disaster, local incident or terrorist act, there will be no refunds of race entry fees. Monies collected have been used to develop and produce the event, as well as purchase race supplies. !CONVERTING A ONE DAY MEMBERSHIP

USA Triathlon One Day Youth Memberships may be converted to an Annual Youth Membership for an additional $5. If you would like to convert your triathlete’s One Day Youth Membership to an Annual Youth Membership, follow USA Triathlon's instructions at usatriathlon.org/membership-services.
