Weather & Climate Geographical Investigation Worksheet

Worksheet 5

Stage 1: Pre-field Investigation

a. Area of Geographical Investigation and Inquiry

5. Relationship between air temperature and relative humidity

b. HypothesisThe higher the air temperature, the lower the relative humidity

c. Write up of the site Identify and describe

the site. Explain the rationale

behind the choice of site.

Provide photographs of the site.

The site is on the field, which is 5 steps away from the drain located near the canteen.

In order to avoid the affluence by the air-conditioning school building and the heat from the students doing sports. In addition, doing like this can ensure the normal ground surface temperature.

Time frame for data collection [duration & frequency]

Sampling technique and justification.

Psychrometer and weather tracker.

Fill with distilled water; swing the sling psychrometer at a steady and comfortable pace, take the data several times and get the average. Precaution: Keep the psychrometer far from the people’s body (both collector and people around him). When measure the atmosphere temperature using the weather tracker, hold it at least 1.5m above the ground level.

Weather & Climate Geographical Investigation Worksheet

Stage 3: Post-field Investigation

a. Presentation of all data in a graphical form.

b. Analysis of data Explain the findings,

demonstrating your knowledge and understanding of the topic.

This involves recognizing spatial patterns and trends found in the information collected.

Where appropriate, you should attempt to explain anomalies.

As the atmosphere temperature rises, the air expands and results in the greater space between air particles. Hence, air can hold more water vapour. Because the absolute humidity stays comparatively the same, the relative humidity decreases as temperature increases.

c. Acceptance or rejection of hypothesis. If the hypothesis is

accepted, prove it using the data in the graph.

The hypothesis is accepted. From the above graph:

- From 7:25 to 11:25: temperature increases from 27.9 to 32.1 while relative humidity decreases from 83% to 58%

Page 4: 2015 Geographical Investigation

Weather & Climate Geographical Investigation Worksheet

If the hypothesis is rejected, formulate a new hypothesis based on the data.

- From 11:25 to 15:00: temperature decreases from 32.1 to 31.4 while relative humidity increases from 58% to 53%

- From 15:00 to 18:00: temperature increases from 31.4 to 31.8 while relative humidity decreases from 63% to 62%

d. Reliability of the data collected: Challenges faced in

the field investigation, with reference too Data collectorso Data collection

methodso Equipment

- A few boys were doing sports around us, resulting in the inaccuracy of the data collection

- Could not find distilled water- The weather tracker kept changing the temperature

measurement so we could not get the exact value

e. Suggestions to improve the field investigation. Consider the

challenges and limitation faced.

- Conduct the investigation over a longer period of time- Use distilled water instead of tap water for the

psychrometer- Do not collect data during rainy days- Collect data from different appropriate places
