St. Francis Church, Greensboro - Franciscan Newsletter
Citation preview
February 2015
My Dear Franciscan Friends,
As we enter the last month of our time together, I want to let you
know about some of the things I am putting into place to help with
the transition.
Sam Doyle and I have worked on the music for our liturgical life.
We have planned the music from now through Easter. I am teaching
an Inquirer’s class so that some adults will be prepared for Confir-
mation, Reception or the Reaffirmation of their faith in May. The
Bishop will not be coming to St Francis until sometime next school
year, so our adults and youth will be going to Holy Trinity when the
Bishop visits there in late May.
I am conducting a series of premarital counseling sessions for one of our new young couples
who attend here but will be married in Western NC in May.
For Lent I am lining up people to lead evening prayer at 7:00pm so that there will be an extra
opportunity for the parish to begin the process of transition prayerfully.
Sunday morning forums at 9:15am will feature speakers from various organizations or posi-
tions in Greensboro to increase our vision of the life and needs of our larger community while
the church also focuses internally on clergy leadership and the implementation of the Capital
Campaign. I have asked Kris Cooke to oversee the process of obtaining the speakers begin-
ning March 8th.
I am also working with our Senior Warden to line up clergy for some of the services in Lent.
While these are some of my activities related to transition, I am also continuing to focus on
the pastoral needs of the parish and our life together.
May God bless you and keep you as the apple of his eye!
Michael

First of all, please be aware of our gratitude for your generosity, love for St. Francis and God’s
ministry here.
With the new pledges to the Capital Campaign in addition to the annual Stewardship pledges, we
want to offer suggestions for helping to keep your pledges straight.
Checks or cash are ways to give to the Church in which 100% of your money goes to the cam-
paign of your choice. If you give by check, please write separate checks for Stewardship and
Capital with the correct designation on the ‘Memo’ line. (The Capital Account is a different
St. Francis bank account.) If you give cash donations, please put it in an envelope with your
name on the outside as well as the campaign designation, either capital or stewardship.
Setting up an automatic bank check (bill pay) at the bank is an easy way to give regularly.
When setting up the bank check, please be sure to designate to which fund you are giving, even
if you only give to one. Also include your envelope number if you know it.
Online giving has also been established for your convenience. To set up an online account,
please go to the St. Francis website and click on the link labelled ‘Franciscan Connection’ on
the right hand side of the page. This is a newly established website since days of old and there-
fore old passwords and account names will not work. If you are a first timer on the system, the
software will ask for your name and email address as it is on file in the office. If something
doesn’t work please call the Church office to confirm the information we have on file.
If applicable, please establish a separate online giving record, for your regular pledge and one
for the Capital pledge, choosing the appropriate fund listed for each gift. If it’s a recurring gift,
select the appropriate beginning and ending times for which you’d like your gift to be given.
If you regularly give online, please review your entry yearly to be sure the beginning and end-
ing dates selected, as well as the amount, match your current pledge. Online giving pre-selects
an ending date of the calendar year in which it was established unless you select otherwise.
As always, thank you for your contributions to St. Francis however you give them. We are grate-
ful for your support of God’s ministry here.

Capital Projects Committee Report
The Capital Projects Committee has convened two meetings with our architects at Freeman and
Kennett. We currently have a balance of $516,500.00 in our Capital Funds Account. Our congre-
gation has done an outstanding job of honoring their Capital Campaign pledges so early and it is
much appreciated.
Our committee is still going through the process of prioritizing the Capital Campaign projects and
are meeting with various people involved with the church facilities to make the best decisions on
how to proceed. We want to balance the congregation’s needs versus projects that cannot wait ver-
sus the funds we have available. We are also taking into consideration beginning the necessary
construction projects yet keeping the parish and Day School as undisturbed as possible.
The next meeting of the Capital Projects Committee will be February 27th and we plan to meet
monthly to address the many issues that will be coming up as we get closer to construction. We
are inviting Paul Kilmartin, who has been instrumental in bringing up security issues that need to
be updated at St. Francis, and Sam, our choir director to the next meeting so we can solicit their
input.
As mentioned in the last update, the hope is to have the projects ready to bid and construction to
start sometime in June or July. Even though St. Francis is going through a time of transition with
Father Michael leaving us, we are moving forward with our Capital Projects and are available to
answer any questions parishioners might have. Father Michael was instrumental in establishing the
Capital Campaign and we owe it to his legacy to carry through with his vision. We plan to provide
regular updates as we go through this exciting time for our church.
Blessings,
Kris Cooke, Susan Tysinger, and Jim Tanner

Change-ing Lives Initiative
The Lenten Season invites all of us to enter into a special time of prayer, reflection and spiritual
discipline in preparation for the celebration of Easter.
Again this year at St. Francis, in place of mite boxes, we will have the opportunity to partner with
Family Service of the Piedmont and their Change-ing Lives baby bottle program. Parishioners
will be able to use the bottles to collect loose change (coins, bills) or checks during the Lenten
Season. We will begin distribution of the bottles on February 22nd, continue throughout Lent,
and ask that all bottles be returned by Palm Sunday, March 29. Checks should be made payable to
Family Service of Greensboro.
Family Service supports families and children in the greater
Greensboro area through its services, education and advocacy.
Change-ing Lives is a program that we can participate in to
help change the lives of women, children and families in our
community – many of whom have been the victims of domes-
tic violence, sexual assault and child abuse – by collecting
loose change. All proceeds will go to support services includ-
ing Clara House Domestic Abuse Violence Shelter, The Chil-
dren’s Advocacy Center and Healthy Start, a program provid-
ing counseling and education.
Please consider joining the Outreach of St. Francis and adding this meaningful discipline into your
Lenten preparations. This is a way we can all get involved in the life of our community and in
Change-ing the lives of others. Thank you!

OUTREACH
The Episcopal Tuesday morning breakfast at
The Potter's House has an URGENT need for
peanut butter and jelly donations! Each
Tuesday morning, volunteers pack between
130-150 lunches for those in need, and the
PB&J is a vital part! St. Francis has
historically been the sole provider of the
PB&J, and other churches provide fruit,
water, etc. for these lunches. Please help The
Potter's House continue their commitment to
feeding the hungry in our community!

If you're interested in a plot in the Community
Garden, please let Linda Allgood know
([email protected]) by February
23rd. $15 will hold you a plot. You may drop
your check or cash in the offering plate or return it
to the Church office. Please be sure to designate it
for the Community Garden. If you're a returning
gardener from 2014, please give us your plot num-
ber as well. The garden is resting and absorbing
nutrients at the moment, but it should be ready to
plant around mid-March. Complete details will
arrive as soon as we have them in hand, but in the
meantime the Greensboro Beautiful website has free gardening classes and the Guilford County
Extension Center's website has great tips. Looking forward to seeing you in the garden!

STEPHEN MINISTRY CONTINUES TO GROW!
Stephen Ministry is an important way we at St. Francis continue to care for one
another in a uniquely supportive role. Through one-to-one caring
relationships, trained lay persons in our parish reach out to members of our
congregation experiencing difficulties. On February 15th we will be
welcoming a newly trained Stephen Minister, Chris Relos, and commissioning
the nineteen Stephen Ministers and Leaders who continue to faithfully provide
care, support and encouragement to those who find themselves in a variety of trying
circumstances. Please join us on the 15th as we grow in faith and commission our newest
member into Stephen Ministry.
THE PRAYER SHAWL GROUP
The Prayer Shawl Group gathers in fellowship at 6:00 pm on Wednesdays in the Library to
knit or crochet prayer shawls. These shawls are then blessed and given to someone who is spe-
cial in our lives or someone who may be in one of life’s many transitions – the loss of a loved
one, the birth of a new baby, surgery, illness, a wedding, a new job. We invite you to come
share this special time with us. Don’t knit or crochet? We can teach you! Questions? Call or
email Susan Tysinger at 288-5590 or [email protected].

Most children are fortunate and can eat anything they want without any problems. Unfortunately,
the CDC states food allergies in children have increased by 50% since 1997 and 1 in every 13
children are affected by at least one food allergy. Many of these children can have a life threaten-
ing anaphylactic response to allergens.
Just as you would require your children at home to remain seated during meals, students should
remain seated in the classroom for snack. Allowing children to walk around the room while eating
contaminates toys, leaves crumbs that attract insects and is a choking hazard to the child.
In order to keep all of our Little Franciscans safe we ask that Sunday School and Day School
teachers, chapel leaders, nursery workers and parents follow our “safe snacking” policy:
1. Wash hands upon entering the classroom
2. Serve only foods provided by the church
3. Ask children to wash hands after snack
4. Wipe down all tables after snack and sweep
5. Put away all leftover food and drink
