Cecelia, 10, swims on the Sea Serpents Swim Team along with her younger brother Harry. Mom Beth tells us that Cecilia started swimming as a type of physical therapy for a hip condition that she has. She can’t do any weight-bearing activities. “Cecelia started out swimming because she HAD to, now she does it because she LOVES to!”

Beth really appreciates the sense of community at the JCC and on the swim team. “The coaches really know Cecelia and all the Sea Serpents. Parents help out at meets and get to know each other, other swimmers and their families.”

Joyce started DancEnergy back in 1984 and brought it to the JCC a few years ago. Joyce and her teachers have a devoted following… some of the students have been taking DancEnergy classes since the very beginning! “I think DancEnergy has been so impactful because people love to dance. If you didn’t take dance lessons when you were young, no worries. It’s never too late to dance!”

“We all know that fi tness is an important part of our lives,” Joyce adds. “You need to fi rst discover what excites and challenges you to work at your health goals and then enjoy it enough to stick with it. DancEnergy provides that physical and mental challenge, along with a lot of fun and close friendships. If you’ve never tried DancEnergy, I say… give dance some time and in return, you will get back the greatest sense of accomplishment and joy.”

The JCC offers more than a dozen DancEnergy classes every week. For more info, go to pg 15.

Learn & Play at the J

We’re proud to be named Marblehead’s BEST Preschool again this year by the Readers Choice Awards! Experience the JCC’s renowned Early Childhood Program.

Infant/Toddler Program offers care for children ages 2 months to 2 years and 9 months, from 7:30am-6:00pm, Monday through Friday, year-round. Your baby will grow with our nurturing caregivers who create an environment fi lled with wonder and curiosity. We encourage language development with daily reading and singing. Toddlers also enjoy Music & Movement classes as part of the weekly curriculum.

PrimeTime for Toddlers welcomes children 15 months to 2 years and 9 months, 8:30am-12:00pm, 2-5 mornings a week, September through June. We offer a summer session, too!

Preschool welcomes children ages 2 years and 9 months to 5 years old. The program runs 8:30am-12:00pm, from September to June. Our experienced teachers and small class sizes set us apart. The classrooms are arranged in a series of learning centers that encourage both social interaction and independence. Gym and Music classes are part of the curriculum.

Masoret Program In addition to offering our strong Preschool curriculum, the Masoret Program features a special emphasis on Jewish culture and the Hebrew language. Masoret welcomes 4 and 5 year olds.

Transition is designed for the oldest 4 year olds who either miss the Kindergarten cut-off (5 years old by December 1st) or may benefi t from one more year in a kindergarten readiness classroom. The children participate in work groups, introducing them to concepts and activities that they will see in kindergarten.

Preschool Enrichment Programs Every afternoon, our teachers bring children to these wonderful classes, including Swimming, Drama, Tae Kwon Do, Sports, Cooking and more. These classes are open to all preschoolers.

Preschool Plus For families who would like additional care, Preschool Plus runs from 12:00pm-6:00pm daily. We also offer Early Drop-Off 7:30am-8:30am.

If you’re looking for after-school care for your older children, be sure to check out our popular program J Adventure, which welcomes students in grades K-8. See pg. 7.

Play is Important!

Research shows that children learn best in an environment that encourages them to explore, discover and play. Play is an important part of a developmentally-appropriate childcare program. What do children learn from play?

1. Sand & Water Play helps children refi ne observational skills, measure and weigh. It enhances fi ne motor skills, too.

2. Science Play is a way for children to learn and test new concepts, increase language development, plan and discover, observe, predict, compare, draw conclusions and discover how things work.

3. Block/Construction Play allows children to strengthen fi ne and gross motor muscles. They learn to classify by shape, size and color, use their imagination, test ideas and recognize quantity & number concepts.

4. Math Play helps children develop new ideas and increase language and cognitive skills. It also enhances eye-hand coordination and helps children learn new math concepts including estimating, classifying, sorting, counting and comparing. It supports recognition of patterns, shapes and numbers.

5. Dramatic Play teaches cooperation, language skills and communication. It allows children to act out real-life situations and explore different roles.

Play that happens in all of these areas and throughout the school day helps develop and strengthen the whole child so they can thrive and grow at their own pace.

JCC Preschool is a family affair for Sarah Demakes and her twin sons Charlie and Harrison. Sarah had the same teacher – Anita in PrimeTime – when she was a toddler here at the JCC! “I love the teachers here at the J,” Sarah says. “They’re so warm and have helped my boys learn and grow. It’s a loving environment and my kids have really thrived here.” When we asked what her sons love most about preschool at the JCC, she didn’t skip a beat, “Harrison loves the sandbox and slide and Charlies loves to build and do puzzles.”
