Visit to the Thai Elephant Reserve

I was looking forward to visiting the Thai Elephant Reserve for a long time and my wish finally came true recently. My family, several cousins and I first flew to Bangkok. Then, we travelled by jeep to the reserve which is located in the forest in the Northern Thailand.

When we got to the reserve, we were met by an officer. He told us about the reserves and the facilities. He then introduced us to the elephants. They were massive and a little intimidating at first. However, after half an hour with them, I realised how gentle and intelligent they were.

One elephant lifted is trunk so I touched its hard tough skin gingerly. Later, when we were less afraid, the officer invited us to bathe the elephants. We happily agreed and followed the elephants to a shallow river. The elephant lay on their side. We used soap and a brush to scrub their hides. The elephants must have enjoyed their bath because they sprayed cold water all over us.

After their bath we fed the elephants some fruits and sugar cane. They gobbled up everything in a matter of minutes. With their tummies full, the officer invited us to ride on them. I was very excited and nervous. However, my nervousness vanished as soon as I was safely on top of the elephants. As my elephant made its way through the forest, I enjoyed my scenic surrounding. The officer explained to us that the elephants’ habitat was under threat due to deforestation. I realised then that these huge strong creatures do indeed live a fragile life.

After a wonderful day at the reserve, we bid farewell to the elephants and the officer. It was truly a memorable trip and an experience I will never forget.
