This Year’s Topics
How quickly time has changed!
The dramatic drop in oil prices has had profound impact on the energy industry. The uncertainty and fear continue to unfold as we speak. Many questions arise.
What is the future for the Canadian Oil Sands and prospect of big foreign investments in the energy industry in Canada?
How do we survive as a business or individual in the drastic down turn by becoming the fittest in the oil and gas “jungle”?
What are the opportunities in the down cycle?
There are many more questions and pressing issues the Canadian energy industry can ask and will face.
Building on the success of the two previous symposiums, The Professionals and Entrepreneurs Association of Calgary (CPEAC) has joined force with Canada China Chamber of Commerce (CCCC) and Canada China Commercial Association (CCCA) to host the 3rd Annual Sino-Canadian Oil and Gas Symposium. The topics of discussion include:
Alberta oil in the global market – today and future
Future investment strategies and opportunities
Distressed asset, merger and acquisition due diligence
Key tax, royalty and legal issues facing oil and gas investments
Cost challenges and solutions for sustainable development in oil sands
Experience in surviving the down cycles in commodity prices
Well completion and production optimization
Outsourcing – a threat to more engineering and project jobs in Alberta?
Come to join many of your peers to listen to industry leaders, veterans and technical experts sharing their insights and experience.
This year’s symposium offers more networking opportunities to meet with senior executives and professionals from both Chinese and Canadian oil and gas, EPC companies, service providers and research institutions.
Your will be intrigued and inspired!

An Assessment of Chinese Investment in Canada’s Energy Sector
2015
By Dr. Wenran Jiang, Director, Canada-China Energy & Environment Forum Wilson Center Global Fellow
Chinese investment in Canada went through a “Great Leap Forward” period between 2009 and 2012, with more
than $30 billion pouring into the energy sector alone. Today, China’s top three national oil companies all run
large energy construction and production projects in Canada, and they are facing the same downturn pressure
of the declining oil price. How are they performing? Will more investments come from China into Canada’s
energy sector? What are the challenges and opportunities in Canada-China energy relations as the industry
going through the adjustment process?
Dr. Wenran Jiang is Director of Canada-China Energy and Environment Forum and its
annual conference since 2004. He is also a Political Science Professor at the University of
Alberta, Wilson Centre Global Fellow at the Woodrow Wilson International Centre for
Scholars in Washington DC, and Special Advisor on China to the US and Canada based
Energy Council.
Dr. Jiang was partially seconded to Alberta Department of Energy as a special advisor on
Asian market diversification from 2012 to 2014. Before taking a partial leave from his
tenure at the U of A, Dr. Jiang was the Founding Director (2005-08) and Inaugural Mactaggart Research Chair
(2008-11) of the University’s China Institute.
Traveling to China very frequently, and other parts of the world with field research, Dr. Jiang has written
extensively on the rise of China and its impact on the Chinese political economy and the rest of the world, with a
major focus on the shifting balance of power in the global economy, international finance and energy and
resource sectors. Over the years, Dr. Jiang has advised government agencies, private companies in energy,
mining, forestry and agricultural sectors on Asian market access and how to engage China. He is currently
completing a book on why Canada needs to diversify its energy market to Asia. Alberta Venture magazine
named Dr. Jiang as one of the 50 most influential people in Alberta for 2014.

Oil & Gas Transactions Considering Uncertain Circumstances
By Charles W. Chapman, P. Eng., President, Chapman Petroleum Engineering Ltd.
A common dilemma in the oil and gas industry is a circumstance where there is a willing seller and a willing
purchaser of an oil and gas company or individual property, but because of prevailing circumstances a mutually
agreeable fair market value of the asset cannot be reached.
The types of circumstances that might prevail will be discussed, focusing mostly on the product price projection
used for determining the value, which in today’s market is causing many difficulties.
Finally, and most importantly, some possible strategies to overcome this problem will be outlined.
Charles (Charlie) Chapman is a professional engineer with greater than 40 years of
broad experience in the oil and gas industry, including staff and management
positions in major and junior producers and consulting firms. In 1985 he founded
Chapman Petroleum Engineering Ltd. and has since been president, overseeing the
diversified services of the company, domestically and internationally. Mr. Chapman is
a member of APEGA, the AusImm, and SPEE.

Evolution of Completion and Frac Technologies and Its Impact on the Productivity of Horizontal Montney
Wells in Heritage BC
By Chris Pan, Impact Completions Consulting Ltd.
In recent years the production of horizontal wells in the Montney formation in Heritage BC has improved
significantly. This study looks into the details of drilling, completion, and hydraulic fracturing data from more
than 400 wells in the Heritage fields from 2005 to 2014. The data were analyzed statistically against the
production of the wells. Drilling, completion, and fracturing parameters that had the most significantly impact
on the productivity of the wells are identified in this presentation.
Mr. Chris Pan is a hydraulic fracturing and completion engineer with over 15 years of
experience in the petroleum industry. Previously he worked for Sinopec Daylight Energy,
Talisman Energy and Devon Canada as frac/completion engineer. He has worked many
conventional and unconventional oil and gas reservoirs in Western Canada including the
Montney, Duvernay, Cardium, Viking, etc. and has extensive experience in
designing/executing completion and hydraulic fracturing of horizontal wells in tight and
shale formations. He received his PhD in geotechnical engineering from the University of
Calgary. He is a member of APEGA and SPE.
Understanding and Improving Horizontal Well Placement
By Steven Neu, Sr. Drilling Engineer, Canadian Natural Resources Ltd.
There are four ways to improve the horizontal well placement. 1) In Field Reference (IFR) surveys to remove
errors due to crustal anomalies. 2) Oil Field Differential Magnetic Reference Stations to correct for diurnal
and solar storm effects. 3) Multi-Station Analysis to correct for downhole magnetic interference. 4) SAG
correction to correct for deflection of the Bottom Hole Assembly.
Steven Neu, P. Eng.
2015
Steven Neu is a Sr. Drilling Engineer at CNRL. He has 24 years of experience in the oil and gas industry and
has worked as a drilling engineer for CNPC, Kerr-McGee, Chevron, and Encana. His work experience

heavy oil and thermal CSS / SAGD.
Is this the End of the Steam Age? By Dr. Tom Harding, Corporate Technology Senior Adviser, Nexen Energy
Abstract: While there are many advantages to the use of steam-based recovery processes, for example SAGD,
for in-situ oil sands recovery, there are both technical and economic challenges faced by SAGD projects in
today’s low price environment. Particularly difficult are the high capital and operating costs and if lower cost
alternatives to SAGD can be found, they would be preferred. The pros and cons for the use of steam for oil sands
in-situ recovery are discussed along with an introduction to several promising new recovery methods that are
under development at Nexen that have potential to replace SAGD.
Tom Harding holds BSc and MSc degrees in Chemical Engineering from the University of
Calgary and a PhD in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Alberta. He has over
25 years of petroleum industry experience and is a former professor and head of the
Chemical & Petroleum Engineering Department at the University of Calgary. He currently
works for Nexen Inc. as Corporate Technology Senior Advisor. His main areas of research
interest are advanced oil recovery methods for heavy oil and oil sands and management
of produced water associated with oil and gas recovery operations.
