The young sailors came from as far away as Cohasset to the south, Medford to the west and Gloucester to the north. There were at least 19 club boats involved in the regatta plus numerous parent and coach boats. It took approximately 70 volunteers on the water and on the land to run the regatta between registration, race committee, the various land activities, including breakfasts, lunches and dinners, and door prize raffles. We were fortunate to have Mike Kalin, Head coach at MIT present a clinic for the youth. Unfortunately the wind gods did not cooperate forcing racing to be cancelled one day and providing very light air on the last day. Marina Expansion Committee to Hold Open House

The Marina Expansion Committee is sending out the flyer be-low to invite boat owners from around the metropolitan area to an open house Sunday September 13th at 1:00 PM to showcase both the club and the marina, as well as explain the proposed project in an attempt to get more boat owners interested in pur-chasing a slip. Any member who knows some who might be interested is encouraged invite them to attend.

Wednesday Night Twilight Racing

PHRF Wednesday Night Racing will be ending soon and will miss the beautiful sunset scenes of summer. Below Class B boats start. There will be a fall meeting to do awards for this year and to make plans for next year. All sailors are encouraged to race on Wednesday evenings as it is fun and is also one of the best ways to improve your sailing. Sailors this year were expected to have someone from their boat serve on the race committee for at least one night during the season. It helps develop an appreciation and understanding of race committee work.

Once again this year CPYC hosted a Rumble between Hing-ham Bay PHRF, Constitution PHRF and Boston PHRF. Always an interesting event, this year there were 41 entrants in 6 classes. Below is one of the shots taken during the race.

21st CPYC Regatta to Benefit Make-A-Wish

Shortened to one day this year, the 21st Make-A-Wish Regatta was still able to raise close to 20K. Once again many thanks to all of the workers for their effort towards this event. Why the Channel Markers Need to be Respected.

Tuesday September first at 5PM an extreme low tide of nega-tive 1.7 was rapidly approaching. Unfortunately the sailboat pictured on the left did not respect the red buoys marking the Snake Island rocks. There were several attempts made to pull the boat of the rocks and into deeper water but the rapidly outgoing tide prevented this. Reminder to CPYC boaters that while at high tide it may seem that there is a lot of water between Buoy 2 and the main part of Snake Island, there are rocks hiding beneath the water.

Youth Sailing Summer ———A Busy One The Youth Sailing had a very busy summer with approximately 70 children in the program. It began right after school finished with swim tests, capsize drills and an opening family BBQ. The summer was filled with lessons, racing and activities. On Wednesday July 1st our youth, as a part of the STEM Curriculum on Water Quali-ty and Environmental Science, met with Meg Tabacsko and Vicki Mucci from the MWRA. It turned out to be a great day for this STEM Module because of heavy morning rain. The youth sailors discussed the water cycle, why water quality matters and then moved into hands-on testing. The rain gave the opportunity to compare two test sites, marine water taken from the docks and rainwater collected from the spouts around the club. The kids tested each site for temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH & turbidity. They then compared and discussed the results of both the marina and rainwa-ter. All of the children were engaged, raising their hands and answering

questions on why the four tests were criti-cal to water quality, marine life & sustain-ability. The tests re-sults showed that the marina water in and around the club were good to excellent results! The program is very thankful to MWRA and our YS Instructors for an outstanding morning with our youth sailors. In early July, Ken Legler, head coach at Tufts University pre-sented a clinic to our intermedi-ate and advanced sailors. This clinic was followed on July 11th with the Northeastern University Sailing Team doing an all day free clinic as a part of their out-reach program, for beginners and intermediates sailors. This well attended clinic was open to other clubs. This year Head instructor Stepha-nie O’Brien initiated a weekly news letter to keep all students and

parents informed of the program activities. Throughout the summer there were Monday race clinics for intermediates thanks to race instructor Chris Mason-Hing. Tuesday eve-nings Twilights were held for beginning and intermediate sailors, run by Barry Lawton and the instructors. (below)

On five Thursday afternoons, 420’s, N-10, and Opti’s competed for the Hatch Brown Club Championships. The results will be announced at the Youth Sailing Awards this fall. In addition to the CPYC Regatta to Benefit Make-A-Wish, and the USA Sailing Junior Olympic Sailing Festival, our young sailors also competed in a number of away regat-tas. (Continued next page)

Youth Sailing Sets a Course for a New 420 Fleet

The programs 420s which were old when acquired and sadly falling apart becoming unsafe. While not in the program’s budget a fleet of six gently used 420s became available at a cost that could not be passed up. Thinking of the programs future and the desire to keep young people in the program longer, the commit-tee decided to invest in the future. As a result, youth sailing has begun fund raising. Check out the Youth Sailing Facebook page for more information and a link to You Car-ing.org to donate.

All hands on deck as the 420’s arrive

In July, 10 boats traveled to the Mystic Lakes and Winchester Boat Club for the N-10 Midgets. There, 38 N-10s compet-ed. Sean Montgomery and Nora McCarey placed 2nd, Chris Rodri-quez and Jake Cataldo 3rd, Emily Rodriquez and Ella McCareya 7th, and Will Lawton and Jack Broden 9th. Sean Montgomery, the youngest and highest placing sailor won the Mer-riman Trophy for the second year. The N-10 Open followed the Midgets at the Medford Boat Club at the other end of the lake on July 29th and 30th. Once again CPYC did well in the regatta. Winthrop Yacht Club hosted the Juniors this summer in early August. Single handling N-10s, Mark Montalto fin-ished 1st, Joey Montalto 2nd and Ella McCarey 3rd. Instructors Emma Montgomery and Cecelia Moreira also traveled to race placing 5th in the Championship 420 fleet at Marblehead Race Week and 13th of 61 boats in the silver fleet at Buzzards Bay Race and 2nd in Hing-ham. Three teams of of sailors (pictures left) competed at the Wood Trophy at MIT August 17th where CPYC finished 3rd, Sean Montgomery and Ryan Kou-fory, 4th Ella McCarey and Will Law-ton, and 5th Hunter Kennedy and Nora McCarey. The program ended with a day at the beach, Pirate Day, Treasure and scaven-ger hunts, a homemade boat regatta, and a closing BBQ.

The CPYC burgee and Ro Carlisle visited the Royal Papua Yacht Club in Port Moresby, Pa-pua New Guinea. There were many sail and motor boats at the docks. Since it was Sunday, she had a local beer and bangers and mash and watched rugby. Ex-Pats use the club as a social club and in her humble opinion, it lacked the warmth and character of our club. Ro expected to see burgees from other places and perhaps they were in the office and not in a public area. The security guard took the picture. The experience made her miss home and she is looking forward to returning to the club and a corner seat on the deck in mid-September.

Blessing of the Fleet

2015

The year’s Blessing of the Fleet featured Colors presented by the Winthrop Police Explorers and Past Commodore Mike Gahan as organizer and Master of Ceremonies. It was a cold gray day for the event but that did not deter enthusiasm. Below Rev. Walter Connelly and Rev. Capt. Charles Bourke, USN Ret. blessed the boats in the parade as they passed. The new boats blessed this year were the Cataldo's boat on the left and Larry and Susan Boute’s boat to the right.

CPYC ADULT SAILING 2015 Twelve new and returning students and as many volunteer instructors took to the waters on Thursday evenings in our Adult Sailing Program. We were blessed with fair weather and favorable winds on almost all of the nights. This year students were able to gain experience in a variety of boats, which included a 12 ft. Whitehall skiff, a 420, a 16 ft. Dory, Rhodes 19's, a 22 ft. Ensign, and a Catalina 30. On Big Boat Night, students and instructors enjoyed cruising aboard a C & C and a Sabre 34. Many thanks to all of the captains and skippers who volunteered their vessels and their expertise. Great sailing and sunsets were enjoyed by all.

Our condolences on the loss of Pilot House favorite and long time member Bill Crot-ty to his wife Joan, and children Donna, Linda, William, Robert, and Diane.

*** We extend our sympathies to the entire Bagley family on the passing of Ralph R. Bagley, Esq. Ralph kept his boat at CPYC for many years. He always enjoyed “looking for leaks in his cabin” and bird watching at CPYC.

*** Our condolences to the Jones family on the passing of John Jones this summer. John was a 50 year member of CPYC.

*** Our sympathies to Pat Everett on the recent passing of his father Clinton Everett.

*** Our condolences to Shelia and Ray Magnan on the pass-ing of Shelia’s mother.

The book club is ready to get back to meeting and discussing their summer reading.

Wally Lamb’s “We Are Water” is the selection for September 29th. This book reveals nasty family secrets from the past as they effect the present and future. The story is completely believable. The October 27th book is the last in the Ken Follett Trilogy, “Edge of Eternity. " It con-tinues the inter-twined lives of

five families through from the 60’s through the 80’s.

Donna Leon’s book “Falling in Love” will be discussed De-cember 1. A mys-tery, it is set in Venice and is centered on a opera diva. The police investigation does not represent the average investiga-tion model. Book club meets around the fireplace and is open to all. Everyone is welcome to join the discussions even if not finish-ing the book.
