NCAA DIVISION III

In 2013, Covenant became full members of the NCAA Division III following a four year transitional period from 2009-2013.

The largest division, in terms of number of schools and number of partici-pants, is Division III comprised by more than 170,000 student-athletes at 444 mostly smaller institutions.

Academics are the primary focus for Division III student-athletes. The division minimizes the conflicts between athletics and academics and keeps student-athletes on a path to graduation through shorter practice and playing seasons, the number of contests, no redshirting and regional

competition that reduces time away from academic studies. Student-athletes are integrated on campus and treated like all other members of the general student-body, keeping them focused on being a student first.

The college experience is a time of learning and growth — a chance to follow passions and develop potential. For student-athletes in Division III, all of this happens most importantly in the classroom and through earning an academic degree. The Division III experience provides for passion-ate participation in a competitive athletic environment, in which student-athletes push themselves to excellence and build upon their academic success with new challenges and life skills. And student-athletes are encouraged to pursue their full passions and find their potential through a comprehensive educational experience.

The Three D’s:

DiscoverDivision III student-athletes are encouraged to pursue their interests and passions beyond the classroom and field of play…to discover themselves.

DevelopDivision III institutions provide an environment that encourages student-athletes to develop into well-rounded adults. Small class sizes, the ability to participate in more than one sport, and an emphasis on participating activities outside of the classroom are all hallmarks of the Division III expe-rience.

DedicateDivision III institutions expect student-athletes to dedicate themselves to achieving their potential. Student-athletes must manage their busy schedules, keep up with class work and face the same challenges as the rest of the student-body.

SCOTLAND YARDHOME OF THE SCOTS

Built in 1989, Scotland Yard is home to both the men’s and women’s soccer programs at Covenant. The field, located in the southern part of the campus just past Ashe Activity Center, is of maximum regulation dimensions (118 yards by 70 yards). Scotland Yard boasts cement bleachers, along with two newer sets of metal stands, and a retaining wall which provides additionalfan seating.

Across from the north-side bleachers, are the team and press areas on the south side of the field. Both teams sit in covered bench areas. During the summer of 2008, the field was completely overhauled by installing a drainage system and sprinkler system. Also a crowning of the field was performed and a sand base was put in place for better drainage. Lights were installed for the first time before the 2010 season.

The inaugural match held at Scotland Yard pitted Covenant against Indiana University-Pur-due University at Indianapolis (IUPUI) on September 2, 1989. The Scots came out with a 1-0 victory over the Metros on that day and would finish the opening season at Scotland Yard with a 7-1-1 home record.

The field has seen some historical matches as well. Former men’s soccer head coach Brian Crossman, a future NAIA hall of famer, registered his 300th career victory at Scotland Yard during the 2004 season. Current women’s soccer head coach Mark Duble recorded his 200th coaching win in 2012 at the Yard. Scotland Yard has played host to numerous conference tournament and regional tournament matches in its 24 years of existence.

MARK DUBLE• Head Coach• 22nd year

Mark Duble will begin his 22nd season as the Lady Scots’ head soccer coach in the 2015 season. He is the longest-tenured coach and athletic administrator at Covenant. Duble also serves as an Assistant Director of Athletics.

He began coaching the Lady Scots club team in 1993 before the program became var-sity in 1994. He “grew up” at Covenant, as his father was a Vice President for Advance-ment at Covenant College in the 1960’s and 1970’s, and he played for, and captained, the Scots soccer team as a player.

In 21 seasons with the Lady Scots his squads have compiled a 223-142-29 overall record. The 2006 team won the NAIA regional to advance to the NAIA national tournament for the first time in school history. Duble has earned the Conference Coach of the Year award six times, and the Regional Coach of the Year award in 2004 and 2005. In his 21 seasons, Duble’s teams have finished at or above .500 18 times.

All told, during Duble’s tenure as head coach, the program has produced 33 all-ameri-cans, two national tournament appearances (one in the NAIA and one in the NCCAA), and 12 total conference championships spanning both the NAIA and NCAA.

In addition to the tremendous on-field success, 54 players have earned national scholar-athlete awards from either the NAIA or the NCCAA. Duble’s teams are regularly recipients of the NSCAA Team Academic Award for their excellence as a group in the classroom. Additionally, over the last two years Duble’s teams have collected 36 USA South All-Academic honors.

In 2012, the Lady Scots posted a 15-5-1 record and 9-1 in GSAC play which earned them a share of the conference regular season title, a first at the NCAA Division III level. The 15 wins was tied for the second most in school history. Covenant placed seven players on the All-Conference team and had two NCCAA All-Americans (Kathryn Allison and Katelyn Newsome).

In 2013, the program’s first year as full members of the USA South Athletic Conference and NCAA Division III, Duble’s squad battled through injuries to compile a 10-9-2 overall and a 7-3-2 mark in conference play. The Lady Scots advanced to the semifinals of the USA South Tournament before falling to eventual champion Piedmont. In 2014, Covenant compiled a 7-4 USA South record and again qualified for the conference tournament.

Active in professional coaching organizations, he has served eight years as the conference soccer chair, five as regional chair, and two years as the NAIA Women’s Soccer National President. He and his wife Lynn, also a Covenant alum and former athlete herself, have been married for 32 years, and have five children: Allen, Chelsey, Charles, Faith, and John Mark.

SEASON PREVIEW 2015 WOMEN’S SOCCER MEDIA GUIDE

PREVIEW: EXPERIENCED LADY SCOTS READY TO BREAKTHROUGH

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- An experienced squad mixed with impact newcomers has 22-year head coach Mark Duble excited about his 2015 Covenant women’s soccer team. The Lady Scots embark on the new campaign on Tuesday against Berry at 5 p.m. at Scot-land Yard.

Covenant returns eight starters from last year’s squad and features six seniors and six juniors off of last year’s team that finished sixth in the USA South and just missed a quarterfinal round upset of Methodist in the USA South Tournament.

“We want to finish in the top four this year so that we can host a tournament match,” said Duble, whose teams have won 14 USA South matches over the last two years. “Ultimately, though, we want to win the conference. We have a lot of returning upperclass-men who are very experienced, so this could be a year for us to move up.”

Duble believes he has a team capable of big things in 2015. He returns his top goal scorer from last year in junior Anna Porch and has a backfield of players with a wealth of experience.

Porch is the top option on the offensive side. The junior registered a career-high 12 goals and four assists a season ago and was an All-USA South second team selection. Joining Porch at the forward positions are sophomores Christy Barton, who scored five goals in her rookie season, and Allie Vannoy.

“I think we’ll be more dangerous this year up front,” Duble said. “Anna is a tremendous player and Allie has a knack for finding goals. Christy had a great freshman season.”

A strength the last couple of years has been the play of the backfield. Juniors Andrea Hunt, Kaitlyn Winking and Natalie Smith all return this year. That group has played and started nearly every game of their collegiate careers together.

“They are all big and strong,” Duble said of the trio. “Andrea and Kaitlyn are two of the best defenders in the conference. Natalie has turned into a great player because teams try to avoid the other two.”

Joining the fold in the back line is senior Ruth Terry. Terry spent her first three years in the midfield, but will move to the back this year. “Ruth will just add to our already strong backfield. She plays with great pace and will help seal up that position,” added Duble.

Duble and his staff will break in a new goalkeeper this year. After the departure of Lucy Johnson, Duble will turn to freshman Rachel Lemay. The 5-foot-11 newcomer from Apopka, Fla., had an outstanding prep career at Circle Christian School and will look to continue that success as a Lady Scot.

“Rachel is going to be just fine this year,” said Duble of his new keeper. “She’ll go through a transition period, like all freshmen do, but she has played at a high level before and has great expectations for herself.”

In the midfield, Covenant is again loaded with experience as seniors Jenna Vreeland, Anne Charlotte Strawbridge and Rachel Bernard lead the group. Junior Gabby Powell and senior Rachel Buys will also vie for significant playing time in the midfield.

Other returners this year include senior Bekah Kanoff, junior Katherine Keller along with sophomores Landry Jenkins, Rebekah Gravitt and Grace Bartelt.

Among the newcomers, Duble expects freshmen Hannah King, Taylor Winking and Carter Steedley to provide depth at the mid-field positions. Winking is the younger sister of Kaitlyn Winking. Freshman Gina Hungerford could also push for playing time on the defensive end.

Duble also brought in sisters Summer Bader and Callie Bader. The older sister, Summer, is a transfer from Division III SUNY Pots-dam where she played for two seasons in the midfield. Other newcomers include freshmen Grace Buys, younger sister of Rachel, and juniors Jordan Brett and Savanna Cingilli. Brett is an All-USA South softball player at Covenant and will serve as the backup keeper.

“These are all good players,” said Duble of his recruiting class. “They will all have to adjust, but they have good pace of play and can contribute to this team.”

Overall, Duble expects his team to compete with the top of the USA South this year. All five of the top teams in the conference’s preseason poll will visit Scotland Yard this season which could be used as the boost the Lady Scots need to vault into the top tier of the league.

2014 SEASON REVIEW 2015 WOMEN’S SOCCER MEDIA GUIDE

2014 SEASON REVIEWLOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant women’s soccer team finished the 2014 season with a 9-10-1 overall record and a 7-4 mark in the USA South under 21-year head coach Mark Duble. The Lady Scots advanced to the USA South tournament for a second straight year, but fell in the quarterfinal round to Methodist.

Duble’s squad put together a very similar year to that of his 2013 team. Both teams finished sixth in the final USA South standings with seven conference victories in each season.

Covenant was second in the USA South in goals scored with 45, includ-ing a season-high 12 coming on the road against Mary Baldwin. The Lady Scots scored five or more goals in a match five times on the year.

MATCH OF THE YEAR:

One of the most memorable victories of the year came on Senior Day at Scotland Yard. Covenant was jockeying for USA South tournament seeding and was facing William Peace on an evening in which seniors Lucy Johnson and Bethany Logan were honored. Transferring junior Rachel Bernard and assistant coach Gene Ezell, who is retiring from his coaching position at Covenant, also received their dues.

Covenant took the game over early on as they scored 12 minutes in and led 4-0 at halftime. Logan, one of Covenant’s top players the last two years, quickly made her Senior Day even more memorable by notching the first goal in the 13th minute and another one just five minutes later in the 18th.

In the second half, it was Bernard’s turn as she scored her second goal of the season in the 48th minute and added another 10 minutes later for her first collegiate two-goal match.

The capper of the evening came when William Peace was called for a foul inside the 18-yard box and Johnson was called from her own side to take the shot. Johnson calmly drove one past William Peace keeper Shannon Maddex to give the Lady Scots a 7-0 lead and Johnson the first goal of her career in memorable fashion.

TOP PERFORMERS:

Covenant’s go-to scorer was sophomore Anna Porch. Porch broke out in a big way after scoring just two goals in her freshman season. In 2014, Porch scored 12 goals, which was good for sixth in the USA South, to go with four assists. She notched a two-goal game against Emory & Henry and followed that up with a hat trick the next day against Marymount. After her five-goal week, Porch was honored with both the USA South Player of the Week and NSCAA Division III Player of the Week awards. She would record another three-goal game against Mary Baldwin. Porch earned USA South All-Conference second team.

Logan finished up a stellar career by netting nine goals and collecting a team-best five assists. Her nine goals ranked seventh in the confer-ence. She also scored four game-winning goals, which ranked fourth in the conference and 93rd nationally. She had four two-goal games for the year and finished her career with 24 goals.

Johnson was a rock-solid presence for the Lady Scots in goal, play-

ing every minute of every match. Her 1819:38 in the net ranked 45th nationally and was tops in the conference. She also finished 84th in the nation and second in the USA South with 110 saves. With a goals against average of 1.39 and a .797 save percentage with six shutouts to her credit on the year, Johnson was a consistent performer for Covenant all year long.

As the season progressed, freshman Christy Barton was able to carve out an increased role in the Lady Scots’ rotation and made an impact in several matches with her scoring ability. Benefiting from the atten-tion given to Logan and Porch, Barton finished with five goals on the year, all coming against USA South competition. Those five goals in conference play ranked third among all rookies in the league. Barton was twice named USA South Rookie of the Week.

IN THE RANKS:

45: Number of goals scored by the team, which ranked second in the USA South and 75th nationally.2.25: Goals per match for the season, which ranked 81st in the coun-try.1.38: Covenant’s goals against average for the year, seventh-best in the USA South.116: Number of total points for the Lady Scots, 96th-most in all of Division III.

The 2006 women’s soccer team accomplished a feat that the program had never seen in its previous 12 seasons of competition. The Lady Scots, under head coach Mark Duble, advanced to their first NAIA national tournament.

Covenant went 15-4 overall and captured both the regular season and tournament titles in the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) en route to earning an at-large berth to the NAIA tournament in Olathe, Kansas.

Covenant went a perfect 8-0 in conference play and claimed the conference tournament title with a 2-1 overtime victory against Virginia Intermont. The follow-ing week, the Lady Scots fell to King in the NAIA Region XII semifinals. However, they were selected as an at-large into the NAIA national tournament as the ninth-seed.

The Lady Scots fell in their opening match of the national tournament 3-1 to Westmont, but the loss did not take away from one of the best seasons in program history.

Covenant placed two players on NAIA All-American teams in Amy Smrcina (second team) and Ashley Wood (third team), while Laura Cherry, Kalie Estrada and Kristine Solis earned honorable mention honors. Smrcina was the Player of the Year in the AAC and one of five players to be named to the All-AAC first team (Smrcina, Estrada, Solis, Wood and Anna Meiners). Cherry and Erica Mackie were second team All-AAC while Joy Cain and Rebecca Sasscer were third team choices. Duble was selected as the Coach of the Year in the league.

As a team, Covenant was selected as the NAIA’s Champions of Character Award winner. The Lady Scots were ranked as high as No. 8 in the NAIA as they started the season 10-1, which included a nine-match win streak.

RESULTS:L, 3-1 vs. Westmont (Calif.)

Roster: Margery Arnold, Lauren Bosworth, Karis Brauer, Laura Brown, Joy Cain, Jenny Carter, Laura Cherry, Kalie Estrada, Becky Galage, Eryn Garcia, Jen-nifer Johnson, Kyria Johnson, Anna Lueck, Erica Mackie, Laura McCaleb, Anna Meiners, Desiree Robinson, Rebecca Sasscer, Amy Smrcina, Kristine Solis, Hannah Stowe, Amanda Vandersluis, Emily Wetselaar, Ashley Wood. 2006 NAIA NATIONAL TOURNAMENT - OLATHE, KAN.

After a regular season that saw the Lady Scots finish 6-8-3 overall, postseason play gave the squad new life.

Covenant hosted the NCCAA Mid-East Region tour-nament and the Lady Scots took advantage as they defeated Cincinnati Christian 2-0 in the semifinals and then took out Campbellsville 1-0 in the finals to clinch the title and a berth into the program’s second national tournament.

The Lady Scots entered the NCCAA National Tourna-ment as the No. 5 seed in the eight-team field. Covenant defeated Roberts Wesleyan 1-0 in the opener thanks to freshman Lauren Probst’s goal.

Facing No. 1 seeded Olivet Nazarene in the semifinals, Covenant did all it could to slow down the potent ONU attack. Goalkeeper Sarah Williams and the rest of the back line kept ONU at bay to force a penalty shootout. ONU would be victorious in the shootout 3-1 and drop Covenant to the consolation bracket.

In the final contest, Becky Galage scored, off an assist from Jenny Carter, but Judson would come away with a 2-1 victory to end the Lady Scots’ season at 9-9-4.

RESULTS:W, 1-0 vs. Roberts Wesleyan (N.Y.)

Parents/Boosters/Alumni/FansAre you a Booster?

A booster is an individual that:

• Promotes Covenant athletics program.• Makes a financial contribution to Covenant athletics or its booster organizations.• Assists in the recruitment of prospects for Covenant.• Provides benefits (e.g., jobs, occasional meals) to enrolled student-athletes.Once a booster.....Always a booster. It is important to remember that once an individual has been identified as a booster, he or she retains that status forever.

If you have questions whether you are considered a booster of Covenant Athletics or if you have questions about what you may or may not do as a booster, please feel free to contact the Compliance Office at [email protected].

What is an extra benefit?

Fans and boosters may not provide anything to prospects or currently enrolled student-athletes (or their families) without prior approval from the Compliance Office. If a student-athlete and/or his or her family accepts any benefits of special consideration (e.g., transportation, clothing, money, meals, etc.) based on his or her athletic skill, the student-athlete will lose his or her eligibility and Covenant will be subject to NCAA penalties.

Extra benefits can include, but, are not limited to:

• Money, gifts, clothing, tickets for entertainment, haircut, and use of a car.• Free or reduced-cost room or board anywhere.• Free or reduced-cost merchandise or services.• Use of Athletics Department copy/fax machines, long distance telephone services or free use of a cell phone.• Typing or editing reports, papers, letters, etc. for a student-athlete.• A loan of money or the consigning of a note to arrange a loan.• The sale or trade of complimentary admissions for merchandise, services or debt repayment.• The sale or trade of ANY items a student-athlete has received for his or her participation in athletics (e.g., gear, clothing, awards). This list is not exhaustive. Please refrain from offering prospects and/or current student-athletes and their families and friends anything that is not available to all students or the general public.

Any questions or concerns should be directed to:
