What is College for Kids and Teens?College for Kids and Teens (CFK/CFT), through the School of Continuing Education (SCE), is a hands-on enrichment program for students entering grades K5-12 who have high academic potential, motivation and talent. Now in its 35th year, the program consists of one- and two-week classes in Creative Arts, Humanities/Social Sciences, Languages & Cultures, Math & Computers, and Science. Taught by UW system faculty or highly qualified and experienced instructors, all programs provide an “academic edge,” and class sizes are limited to 16 students unless otherwise noted.

PLEASE NOTE• Kindergartners must be five years old by June 10, and must have prior five-days-a-week school experience.• When registering for CFK and CFT, use fall 2015 grade levels.• Some classes are designed for a broader range of students (e.g. grades 6-12), and others are more specifically targeted –

look for grade levels listed next to each program number. • Select courses have a $5-25 computer lab or material fee included in the price.

Program Information

When and Where?Classes are held Mon.-Fri., June 18-Aug. 7 on the UWM campus, unless otherwise noted. Specific class dates/times are included in course descriptions. (Please note our first session starts on Thursday, June 18.)

Registration Policy Once your child or teen is registered there are no refunds or transfers. Refunds are made only for classes cancelled by CFK/CFT.

How Do I Register?Registration opens each year on Jan. 15. Call, fax in your registration, or go online to uwm.edu/sce-kids to enroll.

(Note: Mailed registrations add several days to the registration process and lessen the likelihood of availability in your desired class.)

Confirmation of RegistrationYour receipt and parental permission forms will be emailed to you for completion and return. If you do not provide an email address, you will receive them by mail. You may also visit uwm.edu/sce-kids to download permission forms right away. All participants are encouraged to have their own health insurance, as only limited secondary accident insurance is provided by the University.

Before and After CareTo make things easier for students and parents, we offer supervised care in the Union Terrace Room before and after the program day, for a minimal charge. Chaperoning children to or from class is included in the fee. Come early or stay late. You must sign up for the full week.

Schedule at a Glance

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Writing Project is an active chapter of the National Writing Project (NWP). Founded in 1974, NWP’s ongoing mission is to provide writing teachers resources and training in order to cultivate new methods of teaching, research on teaching, and a professional community passionate about writing. Teacher-Consultants (TCs) participate in an accredited, graduate level Summer Institute, as well as smaller in-services throughout the year.

College for Kids/Teens’ partnership with the UWM Writing Project offers student writers a chance to work with three professionally and academically trained TCs per class! One instructor for every five or six students. These instructors utilize materials from the Writing Project to shape a classroom of supportive learning.

Introductory Teen Writing Academy Sponsored by the UWMWP, this writing class is designed specifically for teen students who are interested in practicing writing across three genres: Fiction, Poetry, and Non-Fiction/Essay. These classes are facilitated by experienced writers and teachers who will introduce writing activities that are fun, helpful, and inspiring to the imagination! Our student writers will:

• Explore concepts from three genres

• Choose two genres and produce polished writing pieces

• Learn writing techniques used by professional writers

• Receive individual instruction and response in small groups

• Cultivate an initial writing process: brainstorming, free writing, drafting, and revising

• Celebrate writing with a culminating community event designed to share our writing with parents, teachers and peers

We utilize a strong curriculum anchored by low teacher to student ratios. This allows us the opportunity to know writers as individuals!

This is open to all students who are interested in writing even if they have not participated in other writing programs (some background in writing is welcomed and encouraged but not mandatory). Students can bring previous work but will spend the week focused on new writing projects in the three genre areas.

Fee: $189Peter BrooksJuly 6-10, 9am-1:30pmGr. 9-12, Prog. No. 8440-4001Please Note: There is a 30-minute, supervised lunch break every day. Please bring a bag lunch or, if you have permission to leave unattended, you can purchase lunch at the Student Union.

Advanced Teen Writing Academy The UWMWP offers a follow-up academy for those students who have attended the Introductory Teen Writers’ Academy and who wish to have more focus on developing a particular project or genre. Open for aspiring writers entering high school, we will spend more time in small writing groups in order to help students work on an ongoing project. Our experienced writers and teachers will also teach genre specific workshop that build upon previous writing experience.

• Build upon writing basics from three genres: poetry, short stories, and essays/non-fiction

• Learn advanced writing and revision techniques used by professional writers.

• Meet and share writing with young writers from throughout the county

• Learn and discuss the process of getting work published

• Engage in the full writing process: brainstorming, drafting, revising, editing, and performing

Like our Introductory Academy, we will also host a community event for writers to share your favorite pieces! Past participants are welcomed to attend! We recommend new writers see our listing for the Introductory Teen Writers’ Academy.

Also, since this is sponsored by the UWMWP, we have a low teacher to student ratios to help with a strong curriculum aimed at individual writing development.

Here we will make sure you’ve filled out all the proper paperwork and then students will receive their CFK/CFT drawstring backpacks and wristbands. Please note: You only need to do this for the first class. Lines may be long, so please arrive 30 minutes early.

Pickup & DropoffPickup and dropoff are at the Union Circle, 2200 E. Kenwood Blvd., or inside the Union Terrace Room (SW corner on the ground floor).

Instructors will bring their students to the Union Terrace at the end of class time. You must pick your child up within 15 minutes (e.g. if class ends at 4pm, pickup must be no later than 4:15pm). Students will be allowed to wait for their ride either inside the Union Terrace or outside at the circle drive. Please make sure your child knows where they are meeting you.

You will be charged $7 for every 15 minutes past the pickup time (e.g. 4:16-4:31pm would be $7; 4:32-4:47pm would be $14, and so on). If your child is not picked up within one hour, CFK/CFT will contact the UWM police. Your child will not be allowed to return to classes until the fee has been paid.

Only students who have a signed parental consent form will be able to leave without an adult. If your child is to go home on their own, make sure you sign that form. These students will be given orange wristbands to wear throughout the program.

Please do not drop children off at the Union if you are running late. If you do not see a staff member standing outside the Union, students and instructors have already left, and you will need to take your child to his/her classroom. If you need to pick up your child early or drop them off late, you will need to go directly to the classroom. If you do not know the classroom location, please call our office at 414-229-6364 or visit the Union information desk – located on the ground floor.

WristbandsWristbands are given out on the first day of a session, and are to be worn every day. If your child is enrolled in more than one session, he/she can receive a new band at the beginning of each session. Please bring the old wristband back in order to get a new one. It is your responsibility to make sure your child wears the wristband every day. The colors indicate to our staff what privileges each child has. Children are not allowed to participate in class unless they are wearing a wristband to verify that they are enrolled.

MealsLunch and snacks are not included. Please provide your child with a bag lunch and/or snack each day. Only students that have permission to leave unattended will be able to purchase food on campus.

Drawstring Backpacks! All participants will receive a FREE CFK/CFT drawstring backpack – handed out at check in.

What Not To BringPlease do not bring games, toys, trading cards, electronic devices and other similar materials to classes, unless the instructor has requested you to do so. CFK/CFT is not responsible for lost, broken or missing items.

Disciplinary InformationDisruptive students are taken to the CFK/CFT office and their parents are notified. Continued disruption results in removal from the program.
