2015 season PrevieWSonia Curvelo enters her second season at the helm of the

Cleveland State women’s soccer program with the goal of build-ing upon last year’s appearance in the Horizon League tourna-ment.

In her first season on the sideline, Curvelo led the Vikings to eight wins and CSU’s first appearance in the league tournament since 2011. In addition, Curvelo’s squad set program records for goals in a season (28) and fewest goals allowed (18) and also tied the single season school record with seven shutouts.

Curvelo will welcome back eight starters and 15 letterwinners from last year’s team.

When looking at this year’s team, Curvelo and her staff have the luxury of senior goalkeeper and second team all-league selec-tion Sarah Wood returning, as well as several key defenders who helped the Vikings post seven shutouts last year.

Seven of the top eight point scorers return from last year as well, including senior Vickie Havas who ranks second in school history in goals (16), assists (11) and points (43).

Following is a breakdown of the 2015 Cleveland State wom-en’s soccer team.

GOALKEEPERSSenior Sarah Wood returns for her fourth and final season in

the net after earning second team All-Horizon League honors last season when she logged 1,614 minutes of a possible 1,702. Wood, who made 73 saves and posted a .802 save percentage, recorded six shutouts and gave up just 18 goals in 19 matches.

She begins her final season ranking second in CSU history in saves (258) and shutouts (11.5), needing 129 saves to overtake the top spot and four shutouts to move into first place.

As a sophomore, Wood became the fourth goalkeeper in school history to record at least 100 saves, ranking 13th in the nation with 120. She was also 21st in the nation with a .851 save percentage.

Junior Jane Piontowski and sophomore Jamie Daniels will serve as Wood’s backups this season.

Last year, Piontowski appeared in the net for the final 24 min-utes in a shutout win at Chicago State and made one save. Dan-iels earned action in two matches as a reserve, making three saves and not allowing a goal in 65 minutes. She earned a half shutout in each of her two appearances.

Weber played in seven matches last season, scoring one goal with one assist, and gives the Vikings a target coming out of the midfield on the attack.

Kepp did not play high school soccer, opting to play for the Whitecaps Club team, while Morris was a second team all-league pick as a senior after leading Mount Notre Dame to a runner-up finish in the league.

Ramirez amassed 53 goals and 33 assists during her career at Elyria HS, while Thiss was a first team all-league pick as a ju-nior and senior at Cincinatti Sycamore HS. She totaled 20 goals and 11 assists in her career.

Vento was the leading scorer in Arrowhead HS history and an all-state honoree, while Wisniewski was a first team all-league honoree and Offensive MVP in each of her final three seasons at Independence HS.

FORWARDThe Vikings will have plenty of options up front this year as

they attempt to build on last year’s single season record of 28 goals scored.

Leading the attack up front is senior Vickie Havas who en-ters her final season ranked second in CSU history in goals (16), assists (11) and points (43). Last year, she tied for the team lead with 10 points on four goals and two assists, one year removed from earning first team All-Horizon League accolades.

Senior Chloe Fadenholz is one of the craftiest players with the ball at her feet and will attempt to build upon a strong ju-nior season. After totaling just five points in her first two sea-sons, Fadenholz finished second on the squad with eight points last year on three goals and two assists.

A trio of juniors - Sarah Kaiser, Kaila Sargema and Haleigh Shingary - give CSU loads of experience on the frontline.

Kaiser is an explosive forward who has tallied four goals and an assist during her first two seasons at CSU.

Sargema missed the first seven matches last season due to injury, but was extremely effective up front over the final 12 matches, earning second team All-Horizon League accolades. She was a spark as a reserve for the Vikings, tying for second on the team with four goals and eight points.

After missing the 2012 season with a knee injury, Shingary has rounded back into form over the last two seasons. She tied for third on the team with five points, scoring one goal and dishing out a team-high tying three assists.

None was bigger than the assist on the game-winning goal in a double overtime win over UIC late in the season that se-cured a key three points for the Vikings.

Sophomore Katie Bainbridge was named to the Horizon League All-Newcomer team last year after totaling five points on a goal and team-high tying three assists, while freshman Dani Sowinski rounds out the forwards. She totaled 40 goals and 25 assists over her final two seasons at Oconomowac HS, earning all-league and all-state honors.

DEFENSESenior Erin O’Toole and junior Marissa Sarsfield return to an-

chor a Viking defense that surrendered a school record low of 18 goals last season. The duo started all 19 games and will once again lead the backline.

O’Toole gives CSU a physical presence on the backline and has also scored three goals during her career. Sarsfield has been one of the top defenders in the Horizon League over her first two years, starting 33 of the 34 career games she has played.

Seniors Jen Jankowski and Samantha Sarmento give the Vi-kings a pair of experienced players on the backline who are ca-pable of filling multiple roles.

Freshmen Carly Cerny, Toni Dickson, Sydney McCourt and Devan Obendorfer give the Vikings a number of youthful op-tions on defense. Cerny was an all-league and all-district selec-tion, while Dickson was a two-time first team all-league pick and helped Holy Name HS to a district title her senior year.

McCourt was a three-time all-conference honoree and Oben-dorfer led her high school to districts all four years. A team captin as a senior, she helped her squad to 53 wins over four years.

MIDFIELDCurvelo will have a nice mix of veterans and newcomers to

choose from at the midfield position with senior Allie Sieradzki the most experienced midfielder on the roster.

Sieradzki is an attacking midfielder who tied for the team lead with 10 points last year on four goals and two assists. She has good speed, agility and footwork and can create space in the open field.

Juniors Megan Barrick and Elise Sailors, sophomores Payton Lewis and Ainoa Weber and freshmen Emmaline Kepp, Stacie Morris, Abby Ramirez, Ashley Thiss, McKenna Vento and Jen Wisniewski will give Curvelo the chance to play a number of combinations in the midfield.

Barrick and Sailors are strong defensive midfielders who have experience in the system. Sailors tied for the team lead with three assists last year.

Lewis had a strong freshman season, playing in 17 matches and making three starts, including her first career collegiate match at UC Santa Barbara. Lewis, who had one assist last year, is capable of attacking and dropping back on defense.

Csu’s Home soCCer field for more tHan two deCades

Krenzler Field, the home of Viking soccer for more than two decades, reopened in 2005 after undergoing a $2.9 million renovation that transformed it from a soccer field to a year-round multi-use sports complex.

The renovations consisted of two major improvements, each of which has dramatically improved the athletic physical plant for all CSU sports. The natural grass playing surface was removed in favor of a state-of-the-art FieldTurf artificial field.

The turf was replaced in the summer of 2015.

The second change became visible in 2006 when a removable air-supported dome was placed over the field, creat-ing an indoor practice facility for all sports for the winter months.

The addition of FieldTurf was made necessary when women’s soccer was added at CSU in 2006, increasing the usage of the field to the point where it would be impossible to maintain the natural grass surface.

FieldTurf, a revolutionary playing sur-face that combines the properties of natu-ral grass with the durability of artificial turf, has been installed on almost 1,000 playing surfaces in 20 countries around the world.

It is currently in use in over half of the National Football League stadiums and by almost 50 NCAA Division I institu-tions.

It has been approved for play by FIFA, the world governing body for soccer, with some of the top professional teams around the world currently practicing and playing on it.

The removable dome, a product of Yeadon Domes, covers the entire length and width of Krenzler Field, approxi-mately 94,000 square feet, with a 60-foot ceiling. It is made of a heavy duty vinyl coated flame resistant polyester architec-tural fabric.

The Krenzler Dome is a welcome addi-tion, especially since the Intramural

Sports Center, the only other indoor prac-tice facility on campus, was demolished in the winter of 2005 to make way for the Student Recreation Center.

The dome benefits more than just soccer.The softball team hold preseason prac-

tices in the facility each winter with the space being large enough to set up a regu-lation softball field.

The size of the field also makes it possi-ble to set up an indoor driving range for the golf teams along with batting cages and pitchers mounds for softball.

The men’s lacrosse team, which will begin play in the spring of 2017, will also use the dome.

Built at an original cost of $1.9 million, Krenzler Field became the first university outdoor athletic venue when it was dedi-cated on October 17, 1985.

Designed and built specifically for var-sity soccer, the field is nestled at the north-west corner of the campus against a back-ground of downtown skyscrapers.

The complex includes permanent seat-ing for 1,680 and an electric scoreboard and clock, plus a field building housing two 36-person team locker rooms, a referee locker room, a training room, a storage room and public restroom facilities. The

lighting system provides 50 footcandles of illumination.

The facility is named in honor of Judge Alvin I. Krenzler, a long-time supporter of the university. Krenzler served on the CSU Board of Trustees from July 1967 until August 1970, leaving the board when he became judge of the Eighth District Court of Appeals. He retired as judge of the United States District Court, Northern District of Ohio in 1992.

It was Krenzler’s generous contribution - which at the time was the largest single gift ever made to CSU athletics - that made completion of the facility possible.

Judge Krenzler, along with numerous soccer alumni, were in attendance when the field was rededicated before the dou-bleheader on October 2, 2005. On that day, the Viking women hosted Green Bay while the CSU men followed against Butler.

Dallas Boyer is in his ninth season as an assistant coach of the CSU women’s soccer program, where he is responsible for overseeing the team’s technical development program and also works with the players in individual sessions to improve their playing ability.

Administratively, Boyer organizes the Viking team travel and also coordinates the equipment needs of players. Boyer joined the program in January of 2007 and was able to assist the program through its spring schedule. A four-year letterman in soccer at Parma Senior High School, he earned first team all-league and all-greater Cleveland Honors as a senior. He set a school record for assists in a match (8) and graduated ranking second all-time in ca-reer assists. Following graduation, he spent two years coaching the boys soccer program at his alma mater. As an undergraduate at Miami, Boyer worked with the school’s Youth M-League, coaching in the 8-10 year old boys league for three seasons. He graduated cum laude in 2004 with a Bachelor of Science degree in adolescent integrated social studies. Boyer returned to the Cleveland area after graduating, earning Greater Cleveland Assistant Coach of the Year honors at Parma in 2005 and helping the program earn the Greater Cleveland Division 1 Team Sportsmanship Award the following year. In the off-season, he was active as a coach in the Olympic De-velopment Program, working as an assistant coach with the 1992 girls squad. An active member of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, he has a National “C” coaching certificate and his NSCAA Regional Goalkeeper Diploma. Boyer resides in Parma with his wife Kristen and their sons, Casey and Finn.

Sonia Curvelo is in her second season as the head women’s soccer coach at Cleveland State. Curvelo joined the Vikings after spending five seasons as the head coach at Mississippi Valley State.

In her first season at the helm at CSU, Curvelo led the Vikings to an 8-8-3 record and the Vikings first berth in the Horizon League tournament since 2011. The Vikings set single-season school records for most goals (28) and assists (22) and fewest goals allowed (18) during Curvelo’s first season. In addition, the team tied the school record with seven shutouts and tied the single game record with six goals in a victory at Chicago State.

More importantly, the women’s soccer team posted a cumulative grade point average of 3.60 in 2013-14, including three players who had a 4.0. More than half of the roster had a GPA of 3.75 or higher.

During her five seasons at MVSU, Curvelo advanced to the SWAC (Southwestern Athletic Conference) tournament all five years, leading the squad to the conference title and NCAA tournament bid in 2012 by winning three matches over a four-day stretch. The SWAC Coach of the Year in 2012, Curvelo also led her squad to the con-ference championship match in 2010 and 2011. She developed 12 players who earned All-SWAC honors, 14 players who were named to the SWAC all-tournament team, as well as the 2012 SWAC tournament MVP.

Curvelo’s teams have also had consistent success in the classroom with her 2011-12 squad completing the academic term with a 3.52 grade point average, the highest among the school’s 18 programs and tops among women’s soccer programs in the SWAC. In 2012-13, the women’s soccer team was tops among MVSU sports with a 3.59 GPA. She has produced a National Dean’s List Scholar, as well as an MVSU Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Prior to arriving at MVSU, Curvelo served as an associate coach at Fanshawe College in Ontario, a player development coach at the SB9 Soccer Academy in Tampa, Fla., and a coach for the Rochester Rhinos Soccer Academy.

As a student-athlete at MVSU, Curvelo was one of the original members of the program and was instrumental in leading the team to the 2005 conference title and

NCAA bid, assisting on the first goal and scoring the game-winner in the conference championship match. Curvelo was named the 2005 SWAC tournament MVP, leading MVSU to its first-ever NCAA tour-nament appearance.

The Strathroy, Ontario, native made a name for herself internation-ally, playing for the Portugal National Team that included her first international appearance against Wales in 2008. In addition, Curvelo signed her first professional contract with CF Puebla of the Women’s Spanish Super League in Spain. She also played for three teams in the USL W-League.

Curvelo is a member of the National Soccer Coaches Association, the United States Soccer Federation and the Alliance of Women Coaches. A graduate of the NCAA Women’s Coaches Academy, Curvelo also served as the SWAC soccer chairperson.

assistant CoaCH // 1st season at Csu Carl Contrascier is in his first season as an assistant coach with the CSU women’s soccer program. He joined the Vikings after spending two seasons as an assistant coach at John Carroll. Contrascier spent the 2013 season season as a volunteer assistant and was an assistant coach with the JCU women’s team in 2014, as well as the men’s goalkeeper coach. In his two seasons with the JCU women’s squad, Contrascier helped the Blue Streaks to 21 wins, including a co-regular season title in 2013 and a spot in the OAC championship. In his lone season with the JCU men, Contrascier was part of a squad that posted a 17-4 record, including a perfect 9-0 mark in the conference before falling in the tournament title match. A three-year letterman as a goalkeeper at JCU, Contrascier played in the second most games (48) as a goalkeeper in program history His 27 wins rank third all-time and his 193 saves are fourth all-time in JCU history. He posted a 1.24 goals against average for his career, ranking ninth in school history. As a senior in 2012, Contrascier was a second team All-OAC selection and an Academic All-Ohio pick. He was a second team all-league honoree in 2011 and made 85 saves, the third most in a season in school history. A member of the all-county, all-district and all-state teams at Medina Highland H.S., Contrascier graduated from John Car-roll in 2013 with a degree in history.
