TRANSMISSION PROJECTS
South West Queensland
North Queensland
Eurombah to Fairview Transmission Line 2014 – 2015
Southern Sun Excavation were the principal contractor for easement vegetation clearing and civil earthworks for Powerlink Queensland. This project includes two transmission lines; a 132/275kV transmission line from Eurombah Substation to a substation at Fairview South, and a 132kV transmission line continuing north to the Fairview Substation. These works were carried out in conjunction with active green and brown field construction sites affiliated with Origin and Santos respectively.
Ingham to Tully Transmission Line 2012 – 2013
Once again under the direction of Balfour Beatty UGL, Southern Sun Excavation were contracted to aid in the removal of the existing 132Kv Transmission line which had stood for over 50 years. As a result, Powerlink Queensland require the construction of a new 275/132Kv transmission line. The replacement line will cater for future growth in electricity demand for the communities of Ingham, Cardwell, Tully and surrounding areas. Southern Sun Excavation undertook works within the wet tropics two world heritage areas side-by-side, Commonwealth and State. Works were completed with minimal disturbance to all endangered/vulnerable wildlife and plants including the Mahogany Glider, Southern Cassowary and Ant plant.
Western Downs to Columboola Transmission Line 2012 – 2013
Powerlink and Ergon Energy identified the need for a new 275kV transmission line between the Western Downs Substation (near Kogan Creek Power Station), and the proposed Columboola Substation. Southern Sun Excavation were engaged to undertake the civil earthworks and the clearing of the new 100m wide easement required for this proposed transmission line, with additional space for a future line to meet longer-term electricity needs in the region.
Tully to Kareeya Transmission Line 2013
With completion of the Ingham to Tully transmission line replacement project. Southern Sun Excavation continued their work with Balfour Beatty UGL, constructing access for the replacement of the 132Kv transmission line between Tully Substation and the Substation located at the Kareeya Hydro Power station. The original 132kV transmission line was constructed in the mid 1950’s, due to that, the majority of the initial access was reclaimed by the local flora. Southern Sun Excavation were tasked with producing safe access among extremely steep and wet terrain.
Western Downs to Halys Transmission Line 2011 – 2013
Powerlink Queensland recognised the necessity of a new 275kV transmission line between the Western Downs Substation (near Kogan) and the Halys Substation (near Tarong) was needed to ensure a reliable supply of high voltage electricity is maintained to Southern Queensland. Under principal contractors Balfour Beatty UGL, Southern Sun Excavation utilised their expertise in vegetation clearing and access construction to deliver an above standard product.

NATURAL AND COAL SEAM GAS PROJECTS
APA GROUP
QGC
APA Group Maintenance
2011 -2014 Southern Sun Excavation worked on APA Group gas lines in the Lockyer Valley Region through Derail Industries. After the severe rain and flooding which affected many in SEQ, numerous sections of gas pipelines had been shifted, kinked, cracked or damaged in some fashion. Southern Sun Excavation were engaged to provide our Morooka tracked dump trucks and several zero swing excavators. This assisted in enabling the servicing of damaged and aged gas piping throughout the steep ranges of Toowoomba and Marburg.

These transmission lines where put in to distribute power throughout the QGC works in that area. UGL was contracted to construct two 132kv transmission lines in the Western Downs Region for QGC. Southern Sun Excavation was awarded the civil earth works and vegetation clearing portion of the project. This consisted of all vegetation clearing and access track construction for both projects. NATURAL DISASTERS
Cyclone Yasi
Lockyer Floods
Mission Beach, NQ
2011
Cyclone Yasi had ultimately ended 800km inland off the North Queensland coast, culminating into a heavy low. Not before destroying dozens of homes and damaging dozens more. Two cities without power and millions of dollars’ worth of sugar cane and banana crops devastated. Southern Sun Excavation mobilised a collection of Morookas various in size, to aid the clean-up effort from Cardwell to Mission Beach. With ground pressure fully loaded at only 5.7psi, the Morooka’s were capable of transporting all the materials required including, power poles, bog matts, gravel, personnel, etc. to have the power restored throughout the area between Mission Beach and Cardwell.
Upper Tenthill, Mount Sylvia & Junction Creek, SEQ
2013
With the heartbreak still strong in so many of the local residents within the Lockyer Valley, the 2013 floods couldn’t have come at worst time, with flood remediation still underway from the 2011 disaster. Multiple excavators, Morookas, tippers and countless other plant and equipment were organised to assist the construction of one of the only roads in and out of the area. From the area of Mount Sylvia all the way to Black Duck Creek, residents were cut off from supplies, the only help coming in the form of helicopters. With the creek still producing a heavy current, machines worked to reclaim the earth that was washed downstream in the flood that destroyed kilometres of bitumen road, concrete bridges and hundreds of cubic metres of agriculture.
