DESCRIPTION

In 2015 Fundación Barraquer has broken records, with fifteen expeditions in which more than three thousand cataract surgeries were performed. We have expanded our action to the American continent, with a medical mission to the Dominican Republic in August. Since April, Andreu Cristall manages the day to day as coordinator of the Fundación, with great professionalism and efficiency. We also want to welcome Dr. Joaquin Fernández, who travelled with us from Almeria to the Democratic Republic of Congo on Easter Break, getting involved with great enthusiasm in our project. I am proud to see how my passion and enthusiasm spreads among more and more people, which allows us to continue to grow and be able to help a greater number of people in need. And as always, thank you from the bottom of my heart to our faithful sponsors, friends, volunteers and partners, both at the enterprise level and as individuals, who continue to support us unconditionally.

In 2015 Fundación Barraquer has broken records, with fifteen expeditions in which more than three thousand cataract surgeries were performed. We have expanded our action to the American continent, with a medical mission to the Dominican Republic in August.

As the motto of Barraquer Foundation says:WE ALL HAVE A LOT TO SEE

Social Worker

It is a non profit organisation aimed mainly at contributing to the development of ophthalmology and ensuring its unversality in terms of social work.

This initiative was promoted by Professor Joaquín Barraquer, Dr. Elena Barraquer and Dr. Rafael Barraquer in 2003, within the expansion of the Barraquer Dispensary Social Work since 1941.

The activity of the FUNDACIÓN BARRAQUER focuses essentially on the following areas:

• Providing eye care to people with limited economic resources, both at a private level or through some humanitarian NGOs. The treatments are carried out by the Medical Team of the Barraquer Ophthalmology Centre either in the facilities at the Centre or with medical missions to developing countries.

• Supporting ophthalmological research, through the Research Ophthalmology Chair "Joaquín Barraquer" of the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB), or through other activities for the development of ophthalmology.

• Granting scholarships to train specialists.

• Contributing to the awareness of the society for eye donation and maintenance of humanitarian work of the eye banks.

• Establishing agreements with other public or private institutions to achieve these goals.

Generosity, dedication and love for this work is how I describe the experience lived during the expedition to Cape Verde. The constant love and learning we receive from the people we are helping is much greater than what we give them. To top it all off, being able to learn from a team such as that which I had the GOOD FORTUNE to learn from is a ONCE-IN-A-LIFETIME experience. Great work, great professionals, and better people. We can live from what we earn; however, what we give in return makes a difference in the lives of others. •

You decide to get yourself on an expedi-tion organised by Fundación Barraquer thinking that you are going to help. The fact is that you end up helping yourself by discovering other Worlds within our World: People full of life and gratitude living in the most devastating state of poverty imaginable. Marvellous people from the Foundation who give up part of their lives to fill those of others. • Team: Dr. Elena Barraquer, Dr. Bambini, Dr.

DR. HERNÁN MARTÍNEZ OSORIO

The arrival of Fundación Barraquer in Gabon is an event that generates great expectation year after year. During my first expedition to Africa I was lucky enough to be accompanied by an expe-rienced group and supported by a great organisation. The bottom line is not the number of patients operated on. What’s more important is to participate and experience being a volunteer of Funda-ción Barraquer, thanks to everyone. •

They say that freedom must be won for it to be lost voluntarily in favour of a project. The difficulty lies in being lucky or wise enough to choose projects that are well worth it. The days I spent wor-king with the girls from the Foundation were simply unforgettable. Not a day goes without missing them. •

My first expedition with the Founda-tion I was accompanied by marvellous people, excellent professionals, each of which having undisputable vocation. We shared long working days and the gratifying feeling of helping hundreds of people. Special thanks to the expedition leader and surgeon, Dr. Muhsen Samaan, my father. It was a privilege to see him in action, observing the delicacy and humanity he shows in each of his ope-rations, and his wholehearted concern for his patients was something I will treasure forever. •

A team made up of the following mem-bers will leave for Cameroon at 9 am: Eli, a nurse travelling to Africa for the first time; Amer, a Syrian ophthalmolo-gist; Bachar, a glaucoma fellow at the clinic; and myself, a fourth-year resi-dent at the clinic. After a ten-hour flight, we arrived at Yaundé Airport, where we were received by Sister Cristina, the Director of the San Martín de Porres Hospital, our workplace for 13 days. The Hospital was optimally run by Sister Cristina, who was capable of treating a traumatic injury as effortless-ly and skillfully as she could perform a Caeserean section. Cameroon was an unforgettable destination that we enjoyed very much. •

CAROLA BALLESTER

Our first destination in Mozambique was Boane where we stayed at the O’Gaiato orphanage; there, coinciding on the first day with Dr. Elena Barra-quer’s birthday, where an unforgettable party with African songs and dances was held. The second week we went to Ibo Island, in the north of the country, thanks to Ibo Foundation. The experien-ce was unforgettable, and giving back hope to many people. All those I have had the pleasure to meet will always have a place in my heart, especially Auagie, a young 20 year girl who is now an angel and Herminio a child who is so lovely. Thank you and until next time. •∙

The expedition to Angola has been without a doubt been one of the most positive experiences of my life. This trip has made me realise that helping others is an indirect way of helping oneself and that eye microsurgery and cataract operations are probably one of the most gratifying types of surgery there are, because most patients soon recover something as transcendental as their sight. I have been accompanied by a team of people with great human qualities and eager to help so I definite-ly want to repeat this experience in the not too distant future. •

My arrival in Kigali was a complete surprise; I found a developing city, surrounded by agriculture and misty green landscape that characterises this beautiful country. When we moved to Ruhengeri, a small town in the mountains surrounded by volcans and gorillas in the mist in the northern part of the country, things changed a little: very humble people with hypermature cataracts that nee-ded urgent help, people whose faces, some still marked by tragedy, have smiles drawn on them when they regain their sight. I was struck by the simplici-ty of these people and happiness that they show while still in hospital. This is the second time that I share an experience in Africa. I love going and working with an absolutely tireless team, meeting people, cultures and of course then being left with the feeling of being part of something big. I will definitely be back. •

An experience that did not last long, but will remain with me for the rest of my live. I learned to be grateful and al-truistic. At the very beginning of our adventure, things went awry. Because of a storm battering the north of Europe, we were delayed for 20 hours and we lost a suitcase; customs in Nairobi detained us for more than two hours, and our driver got lost. Eventually, however, we arrived in Murunga, where we set up the operating room and that very afternoon we were able to operate on 6 patients. The patients belonged to the Kikuyu and Samburu ethnic groups, the latter being tall, elegant and dressed in pre-cious jewellery that they didn’t remove even when they came into the operat-ing room. It was exciting to see men and women arriving with a cane, unable to see any-thing, bumping into trees, and then the day after the operation, when we took the bandages off their eyes, the expres-sion on their face was hard to describe. Some of them became anxious when they saw everything, as they absorbed the things they were seeing. And, fur-thermore, as they were in a hospital and faced a world that they had never seen before, they were even more amazed. The lovely blessing that the ancient Samburu people bestowed upon us was touching: I think all of us cried a little (even me). It was beautiful. And finally, it is exciting to continue being part of these experiences, and contribute to restoring the eyesight of people who already have a complicated enough life in addition to being blind. •

It’s difficult to describe our experience in Richard Toll, in north of Senegal. I can only give thanks to my travel com-panions Sonia, Natalia, Javier, Bachar and Ramón; and also to the Probitas Foundation for their impeccable col-laboration. This gratitude must be extended to all our local partners in Senegal: the whole community of Richard Toll, the hospital staff and even the external medical facilities staff supported us all the way; they looked after our well-being at every step. I have an unforgettable memory of the day after surgery, when we removed the bandages from the patients who had been blind due to cataracts, suddenly they could see again: their smiling faces made it worth the effort. We worked hard out there. My only wish is to return soon as we still have a lot of work left to do. •

Imagine you’re 24 years old and at the age of 3 you lose your sight, you’re deprived of enjoying the landscape, of seeing your loved ones; you grow up in the shadows. If that was the case, what would your dream be? It would probably be the same dream that Sweety had every day, the dream of seeing again. They say that things happen for a re-ason and when you really want some-thing with all your heart, dreams do end up coming true. On 4 November 2015, that’s what happened to this beautiful teenager who by chance turned up at the Lifebuoy Friendship Hospital Boat that day.

I enjoyed a few great days along with genuine, special people with huge hearts full of hope. I learnt life values from each and every one of them. Thank you for allowing me to enjoy your great genero-sity and compassion. This trip was true confirmation that hu-man motivation depends on “being able to create hope for so many of those who need it”. •

CRISTALL ANDREU

We set up the operating room and assembled the necessary material in the SOS facilities, Children’s Villages. When we arrived, lots of people were already waiting to be operated on, and although at the beginning they seemed to arrive at the operating room in dribs and drabs, as time passed things started to perk up. The level-headedness of Dr. Damaan, nurse Inma, and the overall good at-mosphere were what transformed these few days into an incredible stay, albeit exhausting. We managed to operate on the Foundation’s 3000th patient of 2015, and on a wide range of others including a 102 year-old lady and a 13 year-old child. Thanks to the efforts of the doctors and collaboration from the local volunteers from ECCBC and the Martínez Brothers Foundation, everything was made possi-ble; it was even easy. A significant anecdote from our trip is that we met up with Pablo, a nurse who had been trained at the Barraquer Oph-thalmology Centre for a while, thanks to one of its scholarships. He proved to be a great help in dealing with the patients. All in all, the only thing left to say is that with teams like this, we could operate cataracts in Guinea and to the ends of the earth! •

OPHTHALMIC EXAMS AT FUNDACIÓ FINESTRELLES

In April, the users of Fundació Finestrelles underwent ophthalmic exams. The exams were performed within the new collaboration frame-work resulting from the agreement entered into in January. In the course of these exams, no serious pathologies were detected, but they served to diagnose cataracts at an early stage or the need for prescrip-tion glasses in some cases. •

SOFTHEADS ÓPTICA 2000 COLLABORATION WITH ZEISS

This year, the Foundation’s expedi-tion teams will be more colourful and cheerful than usual. Thanks to the collaboration of Robin Hat (Surgical Caps), which has donated several of its models. •

Softheads is a brand that designs objects that reinterpret traditional decorations with a contemporary take using humour and hand-crafted art. All the pieces are soft, made from fabric, animal-shaped, and are produced locally in Barcelona. Thanks to a charitable initiative, when you purchase one of these friendly decorative critters wearing glasses, you’re donating a percen-tage of the price to the Barraquer Foundation’s welfare projects. •

Another year ÓPTICA 2000 made its generous donation of frames, which were delivered in the medical mis-sions and also to patients treated in Barcelona. •

Fundación Barraquer and the mul-tinational of ophthalmological pro-ducts Zeiss signed a collaboration agreement in which Zeiss became the sponsor of the ophthalmological missions of Fundación during 2015. •

Fundación Barraquer not only goes to needy countries but also treats cases whose complexity require special attention in a super specialist centre such as Barraquer. Sometimes there are cases detected during the missions that, due to their complexity, are brou-ght to the Barraquer Ophthalmology Centre in Barcelona to regain sight and so a full life. •

FERIA DE ABRIL AT BARRAQUER: A TRADITION

The traditional Feria de Abril (April Fair) organised by the Fundación was held on April 11, one of the most popular fundraising events. From 6 pm to 10 pm, more than 450 people gathered at La Pergola of the Centro de Oftalmo-logía Barraquer enjoyed the perfor-mances of Isabel Ruiz de Villa “La Chamela”, the Rocío Choir Aromas de Azahar, “Pepin” and his friends, and the “El Cordobés” flamenco group, which ensured that the event was a success. The famous rebujitos (Manzanilla wine with Seven Up) were served courtesy of Osborne, and the food was delive-red by Unilever. Other collaborators included Bardinet, Bodegas Roda, Cobega, Criven, Diesmar, Distridamm, Eix-Jardiner, Hielo Express, Mar Màgic, Taconeyolé, and Vilarnau. •

SOLIDARY SANT JORDI MUSIC AND CINEMA IN BENEFIT OF THE FOUNDATION

A VERY BUSY STREET MARKET

Following tradition, on St. Jordi’s feast day, the Fundación Barraquer orga-nised its own stand with books and roses. Thank to the generous collabo-ration of: De Vecchi Ediciones, Grupo Planeta, Edhasa, and Eix-Jardiner. All proceeds will go towards financing the social work projects of Fundación Barraquer. •

In the afternoon of 3 March, Cinemes Girona lended its premises to Funda-ción Barraquer in order for the musi-cian and composer Jordi Sabatés to interpret the soundtrack he composed for the film Buster Keaton, “Sherlock Jr.”, on his piano. It was the first time that the Foundation has organised an event of this kind and all the specta-tors enjoyed the performance. •

On 16 November, the Barraquer Foun-dation kicked off its 8th charity street market. Thousands of people came along during the two week event. This made it a real hit in terms of atten-dance and, of course, takings. Special thanks must go out to all the collabora-tors and volunteers. •

A MOST VINTAGE NIGHT

On 2 October, the Barraquer Founda-tion organised a charity party in Sala Bikini, Barcelona. The theme of the party was the idea of a disco party: “Be there or be square”. Over 240 atten-dees dressed up in costumes from the 70s, and for more than 5 hours everyo-ne danced to the rhythm of different music from this magic age played by Blackout and Stefano Bosio. Later, two prizes were given out; one to celebrate the best “sideburns” of the night and the other for the best “mini-skirt” spot-ted on the dance floor. •
