MATAI CAN SHOW MUSIC EMERGING FROM THE OVERALL HUMAN NATURE, VAST AND DEEP, WARM AND LIMITLESS, AND THE IMPRESSION IS SO STRONG THAT IT MAKES THE ENTIRE BODY AND SOUL VIBRATE TO THE VERY ROOTS. (Philharmonic, 1967)Conductor and composer LOVRO VON MATAI (1899 - 1985) used a single word to describe his versatile artistic personality musician. After acquiring the knowledge he needed in Vienna, his broad spirit led him further from Za-greb, Ljubljana and Belgrade to concert and opera stages of Paris, Florence, Milan, Bayreuth, Berlin, London, Tokyo... He conducted the Philharmonic Orchestras of Berlin, Czech Republic, and Munich, recorded for labels such as Colum-bia and Supraphon, performed in the Bavarian State Opera, with the Dresden State Chapel, in the Operas of Chicago and Rome, in Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires, Musikverein in Vienna, in Museum Concerts in Frankfurt, heading the National Opera Orchestra of Monte Carlo, and many more. The list also includes the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra, with which he initiated the Presenting Young Conductors series. The musicians he collaborated with include Arthur Rubinstein, Christian Ferras i Rudolf Buchbinder, Marijana Radev, Rua Pospi Baldani, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Chri-sta Ludwig, Renata Tebaldi, Birgit Nilsson, Leontyne Price, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau... Apart from his favorites, Anton Bruckner and Richard Wagner, Lovro von Matais intere-sts moved from Palestrina, Monteverdi and H. Purcell thro-ugh Bach, Hndel, Gluck, Mozart, Haydn and Beethovena to Mahler, Janek, R. Strauss, Wagner, Verdi and others. He had been very attentive to Croatian authors, and made Cro-atian music a part of the global orchestral repertoire during his performances around the world. Croatian and Europe-an music will primarily remember his greatness and signi-ficance in the field of conducting, while the young artists to whom the Lovro & Lillly Matai Foundation has given a chance to study, grow and develop, will mostly remem-ber the maestros human quality and selflessness, who left another piece of enduring legacy to music and the society in general through his noble gesture.
THE LOVRO & LILLY MATAI FOUNDATION
The Lovro & Lilly Matai Foundation was founded in 1987 according to the will of both, with an aim to improve the ski-ll of exceptionally gifted young conductors, in Croatia and abroad. The Foundation has been constituted as a non-pro-fit association, performing its basic tasks on two levels: by providing annual grants (supports) to a certain number of candidates and protgs and by organizing annual ma-sterclass and an outstanding international competition of young conductors every four years.Regarding the grants, which are based on documents submitted and in compliance with decisions of the Jury of Experts, selected candidates and protgs receive financial and other support for various types of professional training and improvement, i.e. a kind of professional sponsorship that may be extended over a longer period of time. In this
regard, up until now the Foundation has encouraged and provided scholarships to a number of talented Croatian conductors, extending to them individual and depending on actual circumstances selected support in starting their careers.Being the organizer of the Lovro von Matai International Competition of Young Conductors, the Lovro & Lilly Matai Foundation by initiating this care for a new generation of conductors, aims to bring the scope of a large international movement, which shall, by its reputation and influence in the contemporary world of music, add a new significance to the artist whose name it bears. The Foundation aims at the same time, along with its other documentary and promoti-onal activities, to sustain and uphold the continuity and vi-tality of the spiritual heritage of its founder in the best way.
THE MOST SIGNIFICANT RESULTS DURING THE FIRST 28 YEARS OF FOUNDATION ACTIVITIES
Programmes of support for participation in international competitions, scholarships for studying and training in Croatia and abroad, incentives for engaging young conductors in certain projects of Croatian orchestras, training and courses with prominent conductors.
