Financial HighlightsDear Friends and Supporters,

At the close of each fiscal year, we gather our year-end figures to share our impact, celebrate our advancements and reflect on special achievements. Fiscal year 2015 was no different, ending with a distribution of over 54 million pounds of food - enough to put 45,000,000 healthy meals on the tables of our neighbors in need. Compared to fiscal year 2014, that’s 3 million more pounds and 2 million more healthy meals. Thank you for helping to make this possible.

Since opening our doors in 1981, The Greater Boston Food Bank (GBFB) has distributed in excess of 625 million pounds of food. That’s equal to 520 million meals and enough to feed a sold-out crowd at Fenway Park 13,000 times. While inspirational, this significant milestone reflects the tremendous need in our service area.

This fiscal year was not just about the numbers, it was about the people we helped. Throughout the year, our collaborative efforts provided a consistent source of food to a network of 500 agencies. For those who were not sure where their next meal would come from, healthy food was provided. For many, this relieved stressful tradeoffs between buying enough food, paying utility bills, paying for critical medication or paying for rent. The nutritious food and nutrition education we provided in 190 communities helped to establish a foundation for good health, leading to greater success in work, school and beyond. Examples include individuals like Tina, Mindy, Andre and Jackie who share their stories starting on page 11. They teach us that when the basic need of food is secured, spirits are lifted and hope is instilled.

Together, we have helped to change the lives of thousands for the better. We thank you for your dedication and generosity. We will continue to provide hope to those in need throughout fiscal year 2016 and will stay focused on our goal of providing One Meal a Day to everyone in need in eastern Massachusetts.

Sincerely,

Catherine D’Amato Woody BradfordPresident and CEO Board Chair

In 2015 The Greater Boston Food Bank once again met and exceeded our distribution goal of 50 million pounds of food. We closed the year having distributed 54.1 mil-lion pounds of food or 45 million meals—2 million more meals than the prior year!

Geo-mapping technology helps us to identify communi-ties most in need. however, our success in meeting the need goes beyond our use of mapping technology. Once an area of need is identified, we collaborate with member agencies and community partners to develop community specific solutions that will help us get closer to closing the meal gap in a specific area.

revere is an example of a city where we made signifi-cant strides in closing the meal gap in fiscal year 2015. Although revere is part of Suffolk County, one of our best served counties, our mapping technology helped us to identify that revere was still an underserved community. At the start of the year, the city was only at 63% of our One Meal a Day goal of 365,400 meals. To address this, we collaborated with the First Congregational Church Pantry—our only member agency in revere—as well as other network and community partners, to identify their unique distribution challenges. As a result, we:

• Increased deliveries to the food pantry• Worked with our mobile distribution site at the William

Mckinley Elementary School (now The Staff Sargent James J. hill Elementary School) to convert the ex-isting Back Pack program to a School-Based Pantry, which allowed us to not only distribute more food, but also provide fresh fruits and vegetables to the partic-ipating families.

• Coordinated with the red Cross, a current distribu-tion partner, to bring their food and nutrition mobile pantry to the community.

Our cooperative efforts resulted in the ability to provide more than 100,000 additional meals to revere, bringing the city closer to One Meal a Day. revere closed out the fiscal year at 90% of goal —a 27% increase. Our part-nerships, use of geo-mapping technology, and innovative community specific solutions will continue to help us fulfill our mission to End hunger here.

Food is Medicine and Medicine is FoodFood plays an important role in everyone’s daily health and well-being. Without proper nutrition, one may struggle to excel at work, in school and at home. When lacking in basic nutrients, risk of obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and some types of cancer may increase. Essentially, food is medicine, and GBFB has continued to focus on ensuring that our neighbors in need have access to the quality food that is critical to fostering sustained, good health and productive lives.

Fiscal year 2015 highlights include: NUTRITIOUS FOOD DISTRIBUTION

• Distributed 13.7 million pounds of fresh produce – that’s 25% of our 54 million pound distribution and a 4% increase over fiscal year 2014.

• Provided a variety of up to 40 produce items based on seasonal availability and prioritized acquiring from 31 local growers.

• Increased fresh produce distribution by 5.1% to member agencies serving children, one of our most vulnerable populations.

• Ensured that 82% of the food distributed met the highest nutritional standards through our nutri-tional ranking scale.

SERVICES AND PROGRAMS

• Awarded capacity grants to 8 member agencies to grow their ability to store and distribute fresh food. Grantees increased their dis-tribution by 18%, produce by 12% (almost 400,000 pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables) and number of clients served by 850.

• launched new and expanded existing direct service programs in underserved areas to make more fresh produce available including new School-Based Pantries in Billerica, Jamaica Plain, lawrence, lowell, lynn, revere, roxbury and South Boston.

• Advanced community nutrition education through the “Train the Trainer” program. GBFB’s regis-tered Dietitians provide educational modules built around uSDA guide-lines, focusing on specific health issues prevalent in the community. The modules are designed for community partners to continue to use in their communities.

We are grateful for the support and inspiration we receive to grow these areas including partners such as the Doe Family Foundation, Dr. Allen hamdan, Vice Chair of Vascular Surgery at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Chair of GBFB’s Board of Advisors, the medical community and many others.

- Catherine D’Amato, President and CEO

Twenty years ago, we could not move a carrot from our warehouse, truly, not one carrot. Today, over million pounds of produce is consumed by our clients. That’s people a week eating better.

The Faces of HungerEach week, 90,000 people across eastern Massachusetts eat something from The Greater Boston Food Bank (GBFB). They are families, children, seniors, veterans and individuals who are struggling to keep up and who rely on their local food resources supplied by GBFB. These are their stories.

Tina Fall River, Massachusetts

Tina is a disabled Air Force Veteran and client of the Fall river Veteran’s Center food pantry. “I loved flying planes and was honored to enter the Air Force. But, injuries forced me to stop working, and then I went through a tough divorce. I needed help, and moved back to Fall river to be near my family. now, I’m completely disabled, and it is very hard to make ends meet. When I reached out to the Veteran’s Association of Bristol County, I learned about their food pantry and other ser-vices. The groceries I get there every month, including fresh produce, really make a difference to my very tight food budget. I’ve also been able to give back by using my degree in program-ming to help with the Veteran’s Center computers. Personally, I could never give back as much as these people have given me.”

MINDYMedford, Massachusetts

Mindy and her three-year-old daugh-ter live with her parents in Medford. her father is working, but her mother had to stop due to illness. They suddenly found themselves unable to afford enough food and turned to GBFB’s Mobile Market at the hallmark health System, Women, Infants and Children (WIC) offices in Malden. “I don’t know where I’d be without the people here. When my Mom got sick and had to stop working, we cut back on everything. There just wasn’t enough to pay all the bills. The Mobile Market makes a big difference for us. We love the fresh vegetables and fruits. Getting meat and the basics means we can save on our grocery budget. I can take that money and provide a better life for my daughter.”

Tina, Mindy, Andre and Jackie represent the many faces of hunger we see. Their lives have been changed for the better because of the generous support GBFB receives from you — our donors, volunteers, partners and advocates who make our work to End Hunger Here possible. Together, we can End Hunger Here.

JACKIEHull, Massachusetts

Each month, Jackie and her three children receive healthy food from the Wellspring Food Pantry in hull. “About seven years ago, I moved to hull after a painful divorce. I couldn’t find work, and I was feeling hopeless because I didn’t have enough money to buy good food for my children. I found Wellspring Food Pantry, and they gave me food right away so I could feed my kids that evening; and they helped me apply for Supplemental nutrition Assis-tance Program (SnAP) benefits. I came to the pantry every week, and my kids are healthier and stronger today, because of the fresh produce and other healthy foods we got. Things are so much better, now. We go to the pantry once per month, and I have work cleaning homes and am going to school. now, I am excited for our future!”

AndreMilton, Massachusetts

Every week, 82-year-old Andre picks up food from the Franciscan Food Center in Boston. “When I turned 65, I retired from working. My retirement income is small, so I moved to unquity house in Milton and started going to St. Anthony’s Shrine in downtown Boston. At their exercise class for seniors, I learned about the food pantry at the Fran-ciscan Food Center. Since then, I’ve been coming every Thursday to help supplement my grocery bud-get. What I like about the pantry is that I can choose the foods I want, and the volunteers help me pick out healthier foods, like fresh fruits and vegetables. I visit the pantry every week because it helps keep me strong and healthy. I turned 82 in late September, but I don’t look it!”

Creating a LegacyThis past fiscal year, The Greater Boston Food Bank (GBFB) launched a planned giving program. The new program, legacy Society, provides the opportunity for supporters to leave a legacy to GBFB by designating a gift through one’s estate. A legacy gift has a measurable impact as it provides the funding for endowments, or specific funds and special initiatives that help to advance our mission to End hunger here.

The legacy Society honors donors who have committed to making a lasting difference for GBFB. In fiscal 2015, we honor roberta Thall for her decades of support and commitment to helping those in need in our community. The Sayde C. Thall and Abraham Thall Memorial Fund has provided funding to our Senior hunger Initiative, helping to feed the 1 in 3 seniors at risk of hunger in eastern Massachusetts.

larry and lois ruttman join roberta in funding the Senior hunger Initiative with their legacy Society gift. larry and lois know that seniors can contribute so much to society in their later years, but they need to be healthy in order to do so. We hope that these gifts are just the start of an initiative that will feed seniors far into the future.
