Report From The Trustess

Dear Colleague:Throughout the year, we have been inspired by the vision shared by the ten distinguished pioneers who created this organization. As the only private organization committed to the continued development of the specialty’s science and academic base, we are an essential resource for the next generation of thought leaders.

Our strong history of commitment, we believe, has been crucial in navigating the past twelve months. The last year presented tough and complex challenges requiring renewed focus. Our members, who, historically, have provided the most generous support to the Foundation, encountered difficult economic choices due to changes in the health care landscape. We are grateful to the many loyal members who supported the DF’s work through their individual contributions and their involvement as active volunteers.

We also could not accomplish our purpose last year without generous support from members of the corporate community. Although industry dynamics directly impacted their charitable giving in the last year, these companies have continued to be strong advocates of the DF’s work, providing significant support for our acclaimed Clinical Symposia and to further our research funding capacity. We are well aware of the many strategic challenges they face and are especially grateful for their confidence in our mission.

We know that improvements in the economic environment are uncertain and that we may encounter other unknowns. At the same time, we know for certain that real NIH funding is at a low level, which makes the DF’s work even more crucial.

With decreasing corporate support, now, more than ever, we ask every dermatologist to support the DF and help to ensure the future of our specialty. If you already are an active member, we thank you. To amplify your support, please tell colleagues about the DF and how important it is for our collective future. If you are not a member, join us and help sustain the pipeline of innovative investigators and expert teachers in our field 10, 20 and 40 years from now.

With the help of the entire dermatologic community, we can continue to push the boundaries of our knowledge, making transformative discoveries that can make a life- changing impact on our patients and our specialty.

Year in ReviewEnsuring Continuity and Progress

Individual Contributions Member contributions were at the core of the Foundation’s ability to fund der-matologic research. The DF is grateful to the many members who, powered through the year’s difficult financial climate, and generously gave $2.67 million to support innovative research in the specialty. Despite broad chang-es in the health care arena, physicians continued to give at a substantial level to support the mission of the DF.

In 2015, a loyal group of members generously supported the Foundation at a high level. Of them, 135 Annenberg Circle Sustaining members gave $5,000 above their completed commitment. The Annenberg Circle (AC) roster grew by 18 members, while AC Sustaining members grew by ten. In addition, we now have nine (9) new multi-year AC Sustaining members. Their consistent, high-level giving, as well as multi-year commitments, enabled the DF to con-tinue to fund research by a remarkable group of talented new investigators.

In the past year, the Foundation was also the beneficiary of strong support and participation from many active DF volunteers who devoted many hours to encourage leadership giving among their colleagues. Their gift of time and ongoing commitment allowed the DF to welcome new members at both the Leader Society and Annenberg Circle levels.

Industry and Specialty SupportThe Dermatology Foundation, like many peer organizations, realized a decline in support from corporate sponsors and specialty societies. Mergers and acquisi-tions among the companies supporting dermatology and tighter charitable budgets squeezed giving to a lower level than in recent years. The corporate community provided $2.25 million in recognition of the Foundation’s role in

As the only private organization committed to furthering the scientific base of the entire specialty, the Dermatology Foundation worked diligently to further innovative solutions and develop new knowledge amid shifts in the health care and political landscape. DF supporters—physicians as well as the companies serving the dermatologic community—faced clear and unique challenges that tempered the DF’s fundraising efforts for the year. While realizing a reduction in contributions overall, the Foundation trustees take pride in helping physician scientists and researchers defy the status quo in their search to improve patient care.

identifying new dermatologic strat-egies and cures. These contributions represent a 10% decrease compared to the prior year and a decrease of nearly $850,000 since 2010. The DF greatly appreciates its corporate partners and a wide variety of national and local societ-ies for their steadfast support.

Industry support helped ensure the success of the Foundation’s highly respected annual CME meeting, Clinical Symposia: Advances in Dermatology. The sold-out conference, which featured dermatology’s most distinguished ed-ucators and thought leaders as faculty, covered an array of cutting edge topics for the practitioner. The DF extends its gratitude to Unilever, the Cornerstone Benefactor, for generously supporting the Research Awards Program and its Clinical Symposia Resident Program.

John E. Harris, M.D., Ph.D. – Year 3University of MassachusettsSkin-Resident Memory T Cells in Vitiligo

Vitiligo is an autoimmune skin disease characterized by disfiguring white spots. I am interested in how these spots form, and why they are so reluctant to go away.

Current treatments are not FDA-approved, are not very effective, and they must be continued for life. Studies of viral skin infections reveal that immune cells become activated in the skin to eliminate the virus, and then remain there for a very long time to help prevent reinfection. I hypothesize that the same type of cells become activated in the skin during vitiligo, and likewise remain in the skin long-term to maintain the white spots and resist treatment. Further, I hypothesize that removing these cells by using a topical drug that interferes with signals that they require for survival will result in a short-term treatment that has long-lasting effects.

Aimee S. Payne, M.D., Ph.D. – Year 2University of PennsylvaniaDefining Peripheral B-Cell Tolerance Checkpoints in Pemphigus to Improve Therapy

Pemphigus is a life-threatening autoimmune blistering disease that has no FDA-approved therapies. Anti-CD20 B-cell depletion is one of the most effective

treatments for pemphigus, although approximately 80% of patients relapse and require retreatment. This risks side effects, including fatal infection. Because newly developed therapies deplete different B cell subsets, it is essential to identify which subsets harbor the pathologic autoimmune B cells in pemphigus, as these are the subsets that therapy should target. The proposed studies will allow us to understand how best to use B-cell depletion therapies in pemphigus, with the goal of disease cure rather than just disease control.

Michael D. Rosenblum, M.D., Ph.D. – Year 2University of California, San FranciscoThe Role of Regulatory T Cells in Hair Follicle Homeostasis and Alopecia Areata

Therapies that enhance the body’s ability to control the immune system have the potential to resolve inflammation with minimal side effects. The overall goal of this grant

application is to understand how the immune system controls inflammation around hair follicles and to determine whether this inflammation can be controlled using a novel therapeutic protein. Results from this research may have a profound impact on patients suffering from alopecia areata and other forms of inflammatory hair loss.

The DF is second only to the NIH in supporting dermatologic research. Through its 2016 Research Awards Program, the Foundation bestowed $2.6 million in research funding to 51 deserving individuals for projects spanning all areas of the specialty.

The Board of Trustees is pleased to present the 2016 research award recipients. The Trustees take pride in supporting these individuals and look forward to watching each advance and contribute to the field of dermatology.

Career Development Awards

The most competitive of the Foundation’s early career awards, career development awards (CDAs) provide $55,000 in annual salary support for up to three years. The DF provides a variety of CDAs intended for individuals who exhibit exceptional potential to contribute to the advancement of dermatology. These awards provide recipients with the opportunity to focus on developing the data and experience necessary to successfully compete for federal funding.

Clinical Career Development Award in Health Care Policy/ Public Health

Katrina E. Abuabara, M.D.University of California, San FranciscoEczema Epidemiology and Comorbidities

This study aims to determine the prevalence, severity, and duration of eczema in both children and adults in a large population-based cohort. We will also quantify the

occurrence of the most common new diagnoses that develop in eczema patients and calculate any increased risk of comorbid disease. Finally, we will determine whether patients with severe eczema have an increased risk of autism.

Christian L. Baum, M.D.Mayo Clinic, RochesterPrognostic Risk Factors and Interventions for Patients with cSCC and CLL/NHL

Patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia/non-Hodgkin lymphoma (CLL/NHL) have an increased risk of developing cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC), and

worse outcomes if they develop it. We aim to identify molecular and genetic tests that will help to predict a patient’s risk of cSCC, and the outcome when it coexists. We will also refine surgical techniques for treating cSCC to improve patient outcomes in this group.

Emily Stamell Ruiz, M.D.Harvard University Skin Cancer Equity and Expenditure Analysis

Identifying areas of disparity with respect to skin cancer incidence, treatment, cost, and outcomes is crucial to optimizing allocation of resources and providing high-quality, cost-

effective care. This study will estimate the occurrence and cost of skin cancer screening and treatment, identify care disparities in skin cancer screening and treatment, and then identify skin cancer treatment trends utilizing the All-Payer Claims Databases.

Physician Scientist Career Development Award

Sherrie J. Divito, M.D., Ph.D.Harvard University Investigating Skin T Cells in Graft-versus-Host Disease

Stem cell transplantation (SCT) is potentially life-saving in patients with malignancy, but, its full potential is limited by graft-versus-host-disease (GVHD). GVHD occurs most commonly

in skin and is fatal in approximately 15% of patients. We will investigate whether shifts in the skin microbiome during SCT activate the patient’s skin-resident memory T cells, which then produce GVHD. Our findings could potentially influence clinical approaches to SCT and GVHD.

Tamia A. Harris-Tryon, M.D., Ph.D.Southwestern Med. School Univ. of TexasDetermining the Function of Resistin-like Molecule a (RELMa) in Cutaneous Host Defense

Though insight has been gained into which organisms reside on the surface of the skin— collectively termed the skin microbiota—little is known about how they impact the immune

system. I aim to characterize the function of the resistin-like molecule, alpha (RELMa), a molecule that is produced in much greater quantity in the presence of the microbiota. I hypothesize that RELMa is an antimicrobial peptide at the skin surface.

John C. Selby, M.D.University of IowaThe Mechanobiological Paradigm of Keratinocyte Re-epithelialization: Effects of Matrix Stiffness

This project will use an in vitro model of wound re-epithelialization to demonstrate that the degree of mechanical stiffness of dermal extracellular matrix affects keratinocyte

migration, activation, and differentiation. By extension, this project will also seek to validate the relevance of the Rho/ROCK signaling pathway in keratinocyte mechanosensation and the stiffness-induced deregulation of epidermal activation and differentiation that is manifest in chronic skin wounds.

Science of Human Appearance Career Development Award

Ka Wai Mok, Ph.D.Icahn School of Medicine at Mt. SinaiIdentifying the Key Niche Signals for Hair Follicle Formation

Hair regenerative therapy by new hair formation may be the definitive hair loss treatment. Hair formation is orchestrated by dermal papilla (DP) cells. The

current lack of understanding of what the initial DP inductive signals are prevents their direct therapeutic application. In this study, I will uncover the earliest essential hair inductive signals from DP for hair formation to advance the development of hair regenerative therapies.

Medical Dermatology Career Development Award

Joshua Arbesman, M.D.Case Western Reserve UniversityIdentifying Novel Preventive Approaches in Melanoma Using Genetics of Very High-risk Families

Melanoma rates have been increasing over the last decades. This project will study an unusual family who has developed many melanomas to isolate the mutated gene

causing them. Then we will examine tissue specimens from noninherited melanoma tumors to determine how often this family-associated mutation occurs in these tumors as well. We will use drug screening libraries to identify a novel drug for preventing new melanoma development associated with this mutation.

Haley B. Naik, M.D.University of California, San FranciscoInvestigating the Role of the Skin Microbiome in Hidradentitis Suppurativa

Hidradentitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic relapsing inflammatory disease with significant morbidity and no uniformly effective therapy. My project will

systematically investigate the relationships between HS disease flares and alterations in the skin microbiome and immune response. Understanding these relationships may guide therapies aimed directly at modifying the skin microbiome and thus regulating the immune response, and thereby significantly improve management of this disease.

Hair is a tissue uniquely present in mammals, including humans. We recently discovered a new population of hair-generating progenitor cells and further found that they

control hair pigmentation via a growth factor. My future research will investigate the mechanisms of hair pigmentation as well as gene regulation during hair development, and determine their relevance to the graying and loss of human hair.

Willy Hugo, Ph.D.University of California, Los AngelesInnate Resistance to Immune Checkpoint Inhibition for Melanoma Therapy

A novel immunotherapy that is based on the concept of releasing the “brakes” that the cancer had placed on the immune response produces tumor regression for up to

several years in about one-third of treated melanoma patients. I plan to study the mechanism(s) hindering the efficacy of the therapy in the remaining two-thirds of treated patients in order to identify new therapeutic regimen(s) to ultimately improve their survival.

Wenqing Li, Ph.D.Brown UniversityClinical and Genetic Epidemiology of Atypical Nevi

Using data from 51,529 participants in the Health Professionals Follow-up Study, we will evaluate how sun exposure, pigmentary traits (hair color, eye color, sunburn

susceptibility), genetic predisposition—individually and in interaction—modify the inherent melanoma risk of atypical nevi (AN), a potential melanoma precursor. We will also carry out a comprehensive investigation to characterize how the interplay of AN with known genetic and nongenetic factors alters the rate of new melanoma cases.

Roberto R. Ricardo-Gonzalez, M.D., Ph.D.University of California, San FranciscoStudy of Innate Lymphoid Cells Type 2 in the Skin

Scientists are increasingly recognizing atopic dermatitis as a complex dysregulation of both novel groups of immune cells that increase their presence in allergically inflamed

skin. We will use genetic mouse models of atopic dermatitis to characterize ILC2s (type 2 innate lymphoid cells) and determine their role in skin health and disease. Ultimately, this study will advance the understanding of iLC2s in the skin and provide new therapeutic targets with the potential for treating allergic skin disease.

Lam C. Tsoi, Ph.D.University of MichiganIdentification of Psoriasis-associated IncRNAs Through Systems Biology Framework

Although many psoriasis-associated loci have been revealed, it is still very challenging to identify the causal gene(s) in each disease locus. Recent studies show that long

noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) have distinct expression patterns in psoriatic skin, and that many of them are from psoriasis susceptibility regions. This investigation will use systems biology approaches to test the hypothesis that lncRNAs play important roles in psoriasis development.

Dermatologist Investigator Research Fellowship

David Y. Chen, M.D., Ph.D.Washington University Establishing the Role of DNA Methyltransferase in Hair Cycling and Alopecia

Hair follicles undergo repetitive cycles of growth, involution, and stasis throughout life. Disordered cycling is thought to underlie many cases of alopecia. The goal of this study is

to understand how DNA methylation affects the ability of hair stem cells to maintain the hair follicle’s normal capacity for this repeating cycle of proliferation and differentiation.

Jennifer G. Gill, M.D., Ph.D.Southwestern Med. School Univ. of TexasCharacterization of Mechanisms Underlying Melanoma Brain Metastasis

Metastatic melanoma is a devastating disease with a poor prognosis. This is due at least in part to melanoma’s remarkable propensity to spread to the central nervous system

compared to other metastatic cancers. The goal of my research is to improve understanding of the mechanisms by which melanoma metastasizes to the brain, with the ultimate goal to identify therapeutic targets for potential treatment.

Ian D. Odell, M.D., Ph.D.Yale University Study of Innate Immune Cells and Development of a Humanized Mouse Model of Scleroderma

Scleroderma is an autoimmune disease that results in fibrosis of organs that include the skin and lungs. It has one of the highest mortality rates among autoimmune diseases.

By modeling the human disease in mice, we plan to study how different parts of the immune system lead to this excessive fibrosis. Our ultimate aim is to help develop new targeted therapies for this devastating disease.

Joy Wan, M.D.University of Pennsylvania Investigating Early and Late Onset Atopic Dermatitis

Atopic dermatitis is a heterogeneous disease, and the identification of clinically meaningful subtypes of this disease could dramatically improve patient care. One method of

classifying atopic dermatitis is by the age at which the disease starts. The features that distinguish early onset from late onset atopic dermatitis are unknown, and our investigation will study age of onset as it relates to disease course, associated illnesses, and genetic factors.

Patient Directed Investigation Grant

William M. Lin, M.D.Harvard University Image Analysis of Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsies in Melanoma Patients

Sentinel lymph node (SLN) mapping is the gold standard for determining if melanoma has spread locally to the lymph node. This provides staging information that helps predict survival and guide treatment. Currently, evaluating SLNs is a manual, microscope-based, time-intensive procedure that is vulnerable to mistakes. We are creating a computational program to help automate melanoma detection in SLNs.

Aaron M. Drucker, M.D.Brown UniversityValidation of the CAPS (Clinical extent, Area, Pruritus, Sleep) Eczema Severity Score

Currently available tools for the assessment of atopic dermatitis (AD) severity are cumbersome. We have developed the Clinical extent, Area, Pruritus, Sleep (CAPS) tool as a more efficient outcomes measure. The purpose of this study is to validate the CAPS for use in patients with AD. We hypothesize that it will be a valid and efficient tool for measuring severity in AD.

Carolyn S. Lee, M.D., Ph.D.Stanford UniversityCharacterization of Kinetochore and Kinastrin-interacting Proteins Disrupted in Skin Cancer

Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the second most common human cancer and a model for epithelial malignancies in general. We recently identified frequent mutations in kinetochore genes that include KNSTRN, a previously unappreciated human oncogene. This investigation focuses on understanding how mutant KNSTRN exerts its protumorigenic impacts and will begin exploring the role of other kinetochore genes that are frequently mutated in SCC.

Tobias F. I. Schatton, Pharm.D., Ph.D.Harvard UniversitySignificance of Melanoma Cell-instrinsic PD-1 in Tumor Growth and Clinical Biomarker Development

Therapeutic antibodies targeting the PD-1 pathway have shown remarkable efficacy in treating melanoma. However, the large majority of patients do not respond to therapy, highlighting the need

for mechanistic insights and biomarkers that predict and help optimize clinical benefit. This project will define melanoma cell-intrinsic PD-1 signaling networks and evaluate their utility as biomarkers of response to PD-1 blockade and as targets for novel combination therapies.

Cory L. Simpson, M.D., Ph.D.University of Pennsylvania The Role of Autophagy in Epidermal Differentiation, Morphogenesis, and Pigmentation

Autophagy is the process by which cells identify and degrade aggregates of toxic protein and damaged organelles. I will utilize a three-dimensional human skin model to determine the molecular mechanisms of epidermal autophagy. Specifically, I will test the hypothesis that autophagy is essential to normal development of human epidermis, which involves regulated organelle degradation, and the epidermal response to stressors including oxidative damage and ultraviolet radiation.

Nicholas Theodosakis, Ph.D.Yale University Identifying the Keratinocytic Determinants of Blaschkolinear Inflammatory Disorders

Many skin inflammatory disorders occur along keratinocyte precursor migration lines. We are focusing on these linear disorders (including ILVEN, linear lichen planus, and linear discoid lupus erythematosus), some of which also present systemically. By identifying keratinocyte mutations that cause linear lesions, we hope to explain how inflammation is triggered. We plan to find these mutations through whole exome sequencing, and characterize their associated inflammation.

DF Honorary Awards – Honoring Exellence in Dermatology

2015 Lifetime Career Educator Award

Maria L. Chanco Turner, MDAn inspirational teacher and mentor to generations of medical students and residents

“Dr. Maria Chanco Turner brings a remark-ably broad vision to the concept of education,” a colleague points out. “For de-cades, she has taken a personal interest in the

clinical education and professional success of fledgling dermatologists during their tours of duty at the NIH and beyond. She gradually developed a national following of Turner-educated devotées who now represent a ‘Who’s Who in Academic Dermatology’.” Dr. Turner’s training to be an effective teacher and mentor began in the Philip-pines. Her mother, a physician who pro-vided health care to the indigent, and her father, who specialized in tropical diseases, served as role models, guiding Turner’s strong focus on academics, research, and charitable involvement. After completing her medical education and partial residency in internal medi-cine in Manila, Dr. Turner traveled to the U.S. to join Yale’s dermatology residency program. “The specialty fascinated me because you can see the disease right in front of you,” she said. After completing her residency, Dr. Turner moved to Washington, DC, to teach in Howard University’s dermatol-

ogy department for two years. In 1966, while caring for her young children, she became a part-time staff dermatologist at an HMO. At a time when few women specialized in dermatology, this part-time position was the only one she could find. In a fortuitous turn of events, the HMO was right across the street from George Washington University Medical School, and soon Dr. Turner began to mentor residents and medical students. Once her children started high school, she accepted a full-time faculty position there. A decade later,

former mentor Dr. Steven Katz at the NIH offered her the position of Chief of the Dermatology Branch’s Consultation Service. At the NIH, Dr. Turner’s responsibilities included the education and supervision of clinical fellows and arranging the biweekly grand grounds that became a hugely popular resource for dialogue and learning. She also was very involved in clinical trials and in multidisciplinary research studies. The interdisciplinary clinical collaboration was a source of great enjoyment. “I consulted on patients with infectious diseases, can-cers, genetic syndromes, and with the fellows taking care of them—and I was really teaching by preceptorship, not lecturing.”

Dr. Turner’s impact and reputation as an exceptional educator spread quickly. A former NIH dermatology fellow credits

Dr. Turner with “giving me my clinical skills. She taught me to look at things with a completely different eye than any other attending ever had.” Soon, she became a visiting professor at der-matology training programs across the country, and a mentor to third-year der-matology residents through a diverse number of specialty organizations.

Since 2009, Dr. Turner has been Senior Clinician Emerita at the NIH, and contin-ues to regard her former fellows as family. As an active volunteer at the

Spanish Catholic Center’s clinic, she continues to work directly with patients, dispensing care for indigents in the Washington, DC area.

In a colleague’s words, “Maria represents the very best with respect to education in our field.” A simple philosophy, Dr. Turner says, has served as the founda-tion for her career: “It is not just about the specialty of dermatology. It’s also about how you live your life and how you relate to others. All of that is part of the equation.”

“Maria represents the very best with respect to education in our field.”

2015 Practitioner of the Year

Bruce A. Brod, MDA career of extraordinary service as an expert, compassionate caregiver, and dedicated and gifted clinician and teacher

First and fore-most, Dr. Brod is regarded by his colleagues as a dedicated and gifted clinician, recognized as the Philadelphia region’s expert in contact dermati-tis (CD). “I have

seen, first-hand, the direct impact he has on his patients because of his compassionate and knowledgeable care,” a colleague observes. Another says, “I cannot find a single person who does not have a beautiful story about Bruce. As a clinician and dermatologist, there is none better.” For these outstanding qualities, Dr. Brod has received two Dermatologist of the Year awards, five Patients’ Choice Awards, five Compassionate Doctor Recognition awards, and is ranked among the Top 10 Doctors in Pennsyl-vania. Credit for his interest in dermatology, Dr. Brod says, goes to his pediatrician wife. While they were in the same medical school class at the University of Penn-sylvania, “she suggested that I take a dermatology elective. And the rest is history!” His fascination with immunol-ogy also began then, and the final piece

came when he “fell in love with pediat-ric dermatology” early in his residency at the University of Pittsburgh. Because there were few fellowships in pediatric dermatology then, Dr. Brod began as a clinically oriented educator at Hahnemann University. Once he recognized the urgent need for a CD specialist in the greater Philadelphia area, he worked to fill it. CD emphasizes immunology, which he loves. It “bridges the gap between clinical immunology and immunology in the laboratory set-

ting. And it is an inflammatory disease that sometimes we can actually cure.” In addition to his busy clinical practice in Lancaster, PA, Dr. Brod co-directs the CD clinic at the University of Pennsyl-vania Hospital, where he also teaches dermatology residents and fellows. Currently, he is planning to launch a pediatric CD clinic. The need, Dr. Brod believes, is great and there are few clinics focused on the issue, although children are affected “just as commonly as adults are.” Patient advocacy involvement, which began unexpectedly about 15 years ago, has become “my other life,” Dr. Brod says. When he learned of state efforts to prohibit children from using tanning salons, Dr. Brod became involved and eventually led that project to a success-ful conclusion. From there, his interest in health policy and patient safety expand-

ed. He began working with organized medicine and became more involved in the legislative process. Now, he serves as a volunteer in key organizational leadership roles. His recent accom-plishments include efforts in truth in advertising and physician credentialing, as well as transparency in drug pricing. For leading these initiatives, Dr. Brod has been honored as Dermatology Advocate of the Year by the AAD and named Phy-sician Safety Patient Hero by the Amer-ican Society for Dermatologic Surgery Association.

Patients remain at the heart of Dr. Brod’s work. “Truly listening to them” is the most important factor in gaining their trust and “getting a sense of the big picture and priorities.” A simple touch, he says, often can start a meaningful dialog. “Patients with visible diseases—like vitiligo and psoriasis—are often stigmatized and shunned by the public. But as a dermatologist, literally reaching out and touching their skin changes their lives.”

“I cannot find a single person who does not have a beautiful story about Bruce. As a clinician and dermatologist, there is none better.”

2015 Clark W. Finnerud Award

Warwick L. Morison, MDAn outstanding clinician, dedicated volunteer, and part-time teacher

Dr. Warwick Morison has spent many years as a master clinician, teacher, speaker, and author in the field of photo-medicine and photobiology. Praising him, a

close colleague notes that “Dr. Morison has always maintained a productive balance between his busy private practice and actively teaching his fellow clinicians, residents, and attendings. His dedication to excellence in all areas has been constant.” Dr. Morrison first encountered his subspecialty in 1975 at Harvard Medi-cal School and Massachusetts General Hospital. Opting for a new environment after completing medical school and initial dermatology training in Australia and London, he had traveled to Boston searching for a research fellowship in dermatology. Unexpectedly, Dr. Morison was asked to run the PUVA program at Massachusetts General Hospital, the wellspring of innovation in photomed-icine. At the same time, as part of his fellowship, he created his own pho-toimmunology research lab. “Modern photobiology and photomedicine were extremely intriguing,” Dr. Morison said.

“And it is enormously satisfying, because the vast majority of people you treat get better.” After teaching at Harvard for six years, Dr. Morison accepted a senior research position at an NCI immunobiology lab and joined the dermatology faculty to teach photomedicine at nearby Johns Hopkins University, where he is now a professor. A decade later Dr. Morison opened his private practice in Balti-more—still the only one in Maryland specializing in photomedicine. “Photo-

therapy works in roughly 35 to 40 dif-ferent diseases now, and in many cases can be the most successful treatment,” he points out. “It gives me real satisfac-tion to use my experience and skills to solve my patients’ skin problems.” In addition to his work in photomedi-cine, Dr. Morison investigates UV light treatment in various skin disorders and currently is focusing on morphea, scleroderma, and graft-vs-host disease. He has been a sought after speaker and visiting professor for many years, as well as an important contributor at professional and patient-advocacy organizations, and prolific author. Dr. Morison’s textbook, Phototherapy and Photochemotherapy of Skin Disease, set

the standard for his field. He also served as Editor-in-Chief of the Photomedicine Society’s journal for eight years. Dr. Morison continues to enjoy working with the residents at Johns Hopkins, and on a volunteer basis at the Univer-sity of Maryland. When asked about the time he invests in instructing residents, he says: “I enjoy teaching them because they enjoy being taught. That is why I have been doing this for over 30 years.”

“Dr. Morison has always maintained a productive balance between his busy private practice and actively teaching his fellow clinicians, residents, and attendings. His dedication to excellence in all areas has been constant.”
