PARTNERS

funding applications, to name just a few. The Surfing Queensland Coaching Participation Program has continued to provide affiliated Boardriders Clubs with funding assistance, as well as subsidised coaching accreditation, which has enabled clubs to bolster their level of skilled officials throughout the Club network.

The Surfing Queensland/Australia Surf School network expanded during the 2015 period, which has enabled almost 70,000 participants to take their first step into the water and experience the exhilaration that only the sport of surfing can provide. Surfing Queensland-affiliated surf schools continue to set the benchmark for best practice operations when introducing participants to the sport of surfing in a safe and friendly atmosphere.

Surfing Queensland provided a host of officiating courses throughout the year in various regions. These courses ensure that aspiring officials who set their sights on a career in surfing have the very best opportunities to rise through the ranks of officiating within the sport.

Congratulations to all Queensland athletes who have achieved excellent results in the competitive arena on both the domestic and international landscape.

Finally, I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to the Surfing Queensland board of directors as well as the team of dedicated staff at Surfing Queensland. Your collective efforts ensure that Surfing Queensland is a thriving organisation able to provide tangible benefits to the sport of surfing within Queensland.

Adam Yates Chief Executive Officer

Queensland boasts some of the best beaches in Australia and the world and most of us love to get outdoors and take advantage of them.

So it’s no wonder that surfing is an integral part of the Queensland lifestyle.

The Queensland Government recognises how much Queenslanders love to surf.

We also recognise the benefits associated with getting involved in sport and the sporting lifestyle, which is why the government has provided $857,400 to Surfing Queensland over the last three years to support its programs.

More than 4,500 young surfers recently participated in just one of those programs — the Rookie to Shredder initiative from Yeppoon to the Gold Coast and on North Stradbroke Island.

More than 450 structured development sessions, using more than 70 newly accredited level-one Surfing Queensland coaches were held, with the program gaining momentum among board rider clubs, and underpinning the future sustainability of the surfing network, through upskilling club volunteers with professional coaching qualifications.

We are keen to see more rising stars join the state’s surfing elite made up of champions including Stephanie Gilmore, Mick Fanning, Wayne Bartholomew and Joel Parkinson, to name just a few.

The message is clear. The Queensland Government is proud of our state’s surfing

culture and the opportunity the sport offers to so many to get outside and enjoy some of Queensland’s beautiful beaches.

As the Minister for Sport I wish Surfing Queensland and the surfing community all the best for another safe and successful year.

The Honourable Curtis Pitt MP

Treasurer

Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships

Minister for SportWELCOME TO THE 2015 SURFING QUEENSLAND ANNUAL REPORTIn this, our 51st year in operation, Surfing Queensland has achieved successful results across all areas of the organisation.

2015 marked another successful activation of major events with the resurrection of the Scoot Burleigh Pro at Burleigh Heads. This event kicked off the WSL Qualifying Series in Australia for 2015 and proved to gain enormous support from both local and international surfers. Following it was the activation of Quiksilver & Roxy Pro events, which signifies the beginning of the World Tour season each year at the famed Snapper Rocks. Surfing Queensland managed these events on behalf of Quiksilver and Roxy and once again, both events were hailed a resounding success.

Surfing Queensland continued to deliver grassroots events spanning all disciplines and age groups throughout 2015. These events provided Queensland athletes with a vital development platform to achieve their goals in surfing whilst delivering ongoing opportunities for officiators within the sport.

In 2015, Surfing Queensland once again witnessed our affiliated Boardriders Club networks go from strength to strength. Queensland Boardriders Clubs have achieved some notable milestones in the areas of competitive success, activation of successful events, improvements in governance and successful results with Queensland Government

Event Management encompasses a large portion of Surfing Queensland’s overall operations with the State’s governing body activating over 30 events annually from Coolangatta to Agnes Water, and just about everywhere in between.

Surfing Queensland employs a full time Events Manager as well as a Media and Communications coordinator to ensure competitors and sponsors alike receive the product delivered by Surfing Queensland is second to none. It is this dedication to event management that has enabled Surfing Queensland to be recognised as worldwide leaders in the management of professional surfing events.

In 2015, Surfing Queensland continued to deliver excellence in event management.

Wasting no time, the 2015 season begun with the activation of four events including the first WSL Australasia Pro Junior on the Gold Coast before then moving to the coveted Burleigh Pro presented by Bruce Lynton Land Rover. The World Surf League (WSL) QS1000 kicked off at the iconic Burleigh Point on the Gold Coast in late January and is the event that opens the doors to the organisations major events sector.

Shortly thereafter, the Quiksilver & Roxy Pro took place at Snapper Rocks and with ongoing changes and improvements made to the event site for 2015, Surfing Queensland was able to deliver yet another world class surfing precinct to the world, further establishing the organisation as a world leader in major surfing events. In the end, it was Carissa Moore who set the bar for 2015 with a win at the Roxy Pro, which ultimately set her up to win an astonishing three World Titles.

The Surfing Queensland events team then travelled north for our annual event activation Agnes Water. From then on, it was a host of state qualification platforms in respective disciplines such as shortboard, longboard, stand up paddle, prone paddle and bodyboarding as athletes vied for a position in their respective Queensland teams.

The Queensland Championship Circuit delivered action aplenty across the three - event series that culminated in a down-to-the-wire finish at Burleigh Heads with Coolangatta’s Nick Vasicek defeating 2014 Champion, Tim Macdonald for overall honours.

Several other event highlights throughout 2015 were the Australian SUP & Paddle Festival which took place at Currumbin Alley and the delivery of the SUP Mum’s Program which was considered a huge success after its first year since its inception in 2014. The program saw mums from all over the State jumping on a board and soaking up the sport of SUP and all of the benefits that it has to offer.

Surfing Queensland currently has over 40 member boardrider clubs in the state of Queensland. Boardrider clubs are considered the ‘grass roots’ of the sport and one of the key areas of development for Surfing Queensland. For this reason Surfing Queensland has continued to invest heavily into the benefits offered to our affiliated Boardrider clubs. Membership growth in Boardriders Clubs over the past 12 months has seen another increase built around the growing number of persons taking up the sport of SUP boarding, particularly in areas north of the state where there is limited access to surf. Also the number of junior memberships in Clubs has been expanding rapidly, especially in Clubs previously not traditionally ‘junior focussed’. Increasing junior numbers in Clubs has been attributed to the success of the sport’s developmental pathway. Surfing Australia’s Surf Groms program coupled with Surfing Queensland initiatives, such as the ‘Rookie to Shredder’ program, has seen Clubs deliver consistent training and development sessions for hundreds of junior Club members across the state for a number of years.

Boardriders Clubs continue to seek additional revenue streams to help fund expanding Club initiatives and operations. Grant seeking and subsequent successful applications by Clubs, have

had a significant impact on our affiliated Club’s ability to up-skill their volunteer members, deliver training and development opportunities for Club members and improve upon Club governance. Identifying and communicating grant opportunities for Clubs will continue to be a priority for the organisation, to ensure the long term sustainability of the affiliated Boardriders Club network in Queensland.

Surfing Queensland ‘Club Sanctioned’ events continue to grow as Club Management Committees become more confident and capable of delivering open invitation events. Access to increased Club funds has also provided greater scope for Clubs to plan, promote and deliver high calibre events across all age divisions and surfing disciplines.

The surf school network has continued to be an important component of Surfing Queensland’s operation. In 2015 we had 22 surf schools affiliated in Queensland and ensured they are qualified and experienced to operate at the highest level of best practise.

A growing interest in stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) has prompted an increase in SUP School affiliation enquiries both in the south east corner and in the northern and central regions of the state. SUP will be an important conduit for the expansion of participation numbers in our sport, especially north of Noosa.

The Surf and SUP Groms Program continues to gain and hold the support of our affiliated Surf and SUP Schools. This program has now had time to mature over the past few years and is a well known commodity in the Surf and SUP School space. Furthermore, the program represents a key component in the sport’s developmental pathway and has been responsible for an increased flow of junior surfers transitioning into affiliated Boardriders Clubs

Again in 2015, Breaka Flavoured Milk continued its sponsorship of the Surfing Queensland affiliated surf school network. This significant sponsorship has enabled mutually beneficial outcomes to all stakeholders.

The process for surf schools providing all their Principal Documents for affiliation has been brought forward for the coming 2016 year to alleviate the burden on operators at their busiest time of the year.

As Surfing Queensland recognises the importance the media plays in the marketing and promotion of surfing, as such, the organisation has a full time dedicated Events and Communications Co-ordinator to oversee all aspects of the media.

Surfing Queensland’s media department serviced over 30 events during 2015 through various forms of media, including traditional mediums such as print, radio and TV, as well as web and social media. Surfing Queensland’s Open Men’s state qualifying series (Queensland Championship Circuit) continued to elevate in status thanks to increased interest and support from local media outlets.

We have continued to experience rapid growth in social media forums such as Facebook and Instagram. With targeted campaigns being developed within this area, rapid growth in this arena seems set to continue.

Surfing Queensland continued to devote considerable effort and resources into training and education opportunities in Queensland during 2015.

For the first time, Surfing Queensland has trialled the introduction of ‘Judging Information Seminars’. These sessions were conducted for the benefit of Boardriders Club members and were delivered on the Gold and Sunshine Coasts for short and longboard and on the Gold Coast for Bodyboard. All 3 ‘Judging Information Seminars’ were very successful and will be re-run again as time permits.

Level 1 Surf Coaching accreditation continues to be the most popular course on the calendar. Numbers in these courses remain very steady. However, numbers in the Bodyboard Level 1 Coaching Courses continue to struggle. This is due to the fact that, Surfing Queensland only has 2 affiliated Bodyboard Clubs currently affiliated, and numbers in this segment of the sport have been declining.

Surfing Queensland is looking at ways of improving its existing booking arrangement with both the Gold and Sunshine Coast Recreation Centres. Both facilities remain the ideal choice for the delivery of training and education courses rolled out by the organisation.

The delivery of both Coaching and Judging Courses will remain a key component of Surfing Queensland’s core business and will remain pivotal to achieveing key outcomes in the up-coming year.

Surfing Queensland intends to continue to elevate the sport of surfing within Queensland through an array of avenues which cater for all levels of the sport.

Surfing Queensland is committed to developing strategies and initiatives which benefit our broader network and improve communications by embracing technological advances and integrating them into the sport of surfing.

Surfing Queensland will endeavour to maintain and develop existing relationships through the Government and corporate sector whilst placing a particular focus on the future viability and sustainability of the organisation through forming new relationships. This direction is designed to deliver benefits to all levels of surfing, whether you are an aspiring world champion, officiator of the sport or simply someone who wants to experience the thrill and exhilaration of catching your first wave.

We invite you to join us and become part of a sport that is truly unique and captivating.

The 2015 year provided many new financial challenges, none the least of which was losing two major sponsors in ANPHA (Govt funding) $96,000 and Chiko $70,000. Finding new sponsors in a very difficult market was a major focus. Fortunately, new sponsors came on board for the launching of the Scoot Burleigh Pro, which proved to be a highly successful event and offset a large portion of the above lost funding. The budget for 2015 was initially set at a loss of $65,000. All events were closely reviewed along with their associated costs to turn this loss around and achieve an excellent result of breaking even at year end. The Quiksilver and Roxy Pro ran over time which inflated both revenue and costs equally. Unfortunately due to fraudulent activities by a trailer manufacturer, Surfing Queensland lost a deposit on a new trailer, which resulted in writing off a bad debt of $23,273. This took the final result for the year to a loss of $23,067. The matter has been pursued by Fair Trading and we may yet see some compensation. The organisation has excellent reserves and very strong liquidity. There are no borrowings, minimal creditors and only a handful of current debtors.
