RETINAL IMAGE/CLASSIFICATION SCHEDULE All market steers, commercial beef heifers, market lambs and market goats MUST BE retinal imaged and classified (market lambs and market goats are not classified) to show at the 2015 Mississippi State Fair and 2016 District and Dixie National Junior Round‐Up Livestock Shows during the week of September 8‐11, 2015. See the locations and times below. Make your exhibitors aware of these locations and dates so they can make plans to get their animals retinal imaged and classified.
Tuesday, September 8: Verona – 8:00 A.M. to 12:00 Noon
Tuesday, September 8: Senatobia – 2:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M.
Wednesday, September 9: Greenwood – 8:00 A.M. to 12:00 Noon
Thursday, September 10: Raymond – 8:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M.
Friday, September 11: Hattiesburg – 8:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M. For commercial beef heifers entered by December 1, they will be retinal imaged and classified at the Hinds Community College facility in Raymond on Tuesday, December 8 between 8:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. REGISTERING ALL 4‐H LIVESTOCK VOLUNTEER LEADERS All 4‐H livestock volunteers must be registered and complete the nomination process outlined by the State 4‐H Office (http://msucares.com/4h_Youth/4hindex.html). If you have questions about the volunteer registration process, contact the State 4‐H Office. Be sure to take care of registering these individuals in a respectful manner and complete this task before the show. In addition, make sure that new volunteers complete the livestock quality assurance program. REMINDER: 4‐H/FFA MEMBERS MUST BE ETHICS CERTIFIED TO SHOW LIVESTOCK!! The Mississippi State Fair will be here soon and the Mississippi Livestock Quality Assurance training for NEW exhibitors, parents/guardians and volunteers must be completed by September 1, 2015. Youth going from a junior (age 8‐13) to a senior (age 14‐18) will need to be recertified as a senior. The training video is also on the 4‐H Livestock website and Code of Conduct Forms can be requested from ADS. OFFICIAL HEALTH CERTIFICATE – REMINDER An Official Health Certificate with each animal identified will be required on all livestock showing at the 2015 Mississippi State Fair. This includes all market animals, beef breeding cattle, commercial beef heifers, dairy cattle (purebred and commercial dairy heifers), dairy goats and commercial meat goat does. MISSISSIPPI STATE FAIR PREMIUM BOOKS Each county will receive 2 Mississippi State Fair Premium Books in the county packet as soon as they are available. A PDF file of the premium book will also be sent by email and posted on the MSUcares.com website under Livestock, 4‐H Youth and MS State Fair Premium Book. Please make sure your exhibitors and parents have a copy of the rules for the shows in which they participate. A copy of the schedule of events is included in this newsletter.

DAIRY SWEETHEART CONTESTS AND MEAT GOAT PRINCESS CONTEST A Junior and Senior Dairy Cattle Sweetheart, a Junior and Senior Dairy Goat Sweetheart, and a Junior and Senior Meat Goat Princess will be selected during the Mississippi State Fair. Winners will be selected based on poise, beauty, personality and knowledge of their project. The top 3 of each division will receive awards. Rules and regulations concerning the contest are found in the Mississippi State Fair catalog. Please have the entries to our office by September 25, 2015. Encourage your girls enrolled in dairy and goat projects to enter this year. Winners will be announced according to times listed in the 2015 Mississippi State Fair Premium Book. OUTSTANDING SHEPHERD AWARD AT STATE FAIR Individual exhibitors or county groups can enter. Competition will be based on (1) creativity, (2) educational value of exhibit, (3) attractiveness of exhibit and (4) cleanliness of pens and exhibit area. The Mississippi Junior Sheep Association will sponsor this award which goes to an exhibitor or county group that maintains the most outstanding stall area and educational exhibit. Judging will be from 5:00 p.m. on Friday, October 9, to 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 10, 2015. The winner will be announced during the Junior Sheep Show. Contestants and county groups should register at the weigh‐in Friday afternoon and pick up their exhibitor number. COMMERCIAL HEIFER AND MARKET STEER EXHIBITORS – SPECIAL NOTICE! Check with your 4‐H/FFA exhibitors that are exhibiting steers and commercial beef and dairy heifers about horns. All commercial heifers and steers showing at the Mississippi State Fair and District and Dixie National Junior Round‐Up Livestock Shows must be polled or dehorned with no scurs or re‐growth to exceed 1½ inches above the skin line. The minimum weight on commercial heifers is 500 pounds for the Mississippi State Fair. MARKET GOAT EXHIBITORS – SPECIAL NOTICE! Check with your 4‐H/FFA exhibitors who are exhibiting market goats about horns. Goats may be shown that are polled, dehorned, or disbudded with no re‐growth to exceed 1½” above the skin line. Removal of horns is not allowed on the show grounds. Remember the minimum weight of market goats is 40 pounds with no maximum weight for the Mississippi State Fair. COMMERCIAL MEAT GOAT DOE SHOW EXHIBITORS – SPECIAL NOTICE! The minimum weight of meat goat does is 40 pounds with no maximum weight for the Mississippi State Fair. MARKET LAMB EXHIBITORS – SPECIAL NOTICE! The minimum weight of market lambs is 70 pounds with no maximum weight for the Mississippi State Fair. Remember that lambs will be shown by weight and not by breed.
MARKET HOG EXHIBITORS – SPECIAL NOTICE! The minimum weight of market hogs is 200 pounds with no maximum weight for the Mississippi State Fair.
COMMERCIAL DAIRY HEIFER EXHIBITORS – SPECIAL NOTICE! The minimum weight of commercial dairy heifers is 200 pounds for the Mississippi State Fair.

MISSISSIPPI4‐HDIXIENATIONALEQUINESHADOWPROGRAM
The Mississippi 4‐H Horse Program, along with the Mississippi Quarter Horse
Association (MQHA), would like to introduce you to the Mississippi 4‐H Dixie
National Equine Shadow Program. This program will give 4‐H’ers an opportunity to
participate in the inner working of the Dixie National Quarter Horse Show, the
largest Quarter Horse Show in the South!
To be eligible to apply you must be a senior 4‐H’er in the state of Mississippi and
be 14‐18 years old as of January 1st of the current year. The application must be
fully completed to be considered for acceptance into this program, as any partially
completed applications will be discarded and not considered.
Each 4‐H’er will get to experience some of the most elite horsemen and
horsewomen in today’s industry through informational talks that will be available
in all disciplines. Chaperones, lodging and meals will be provided by MQHA for the
entirety of the 4‐H’ers stay.
Applications will be sent via email by Nikki Jefcoat and completed applications are
due in the Jones County Extension Office by November 1, 2015. This is not a
postmark date. Applications will be reviewed by the MQHA Board of Directors and
selections will be made by December 1, 2015. For more information on this

This program is meant to give senior age 4‐H’ers behind the scenes action of putting on a world class Quarter Horse show. In addition, 4‐H’ers will have an opportunity to work with some of the top industry leaders and have one‐on‐one educational time with them!

2015 MISSISSIPPI 4‐H HORSE CHAMPIONSHIP The 2015 Mississippi 4‐H Horse Championship, including team demonstration, individual demonstration, public speaking, horse bowl, hippology, horse judging, horse art, and horse photography contests, was an outstanding event! The show ran extremely smooth and this is due to the fine work and cooperation of many, many people. We want to express our appreciation to all exhibitors, parents, volunteers, leaders, agents, and specialists for their excellent cooperation and interest in the 4‐H horse program. We especially appreciate the Extension agents/program associates and volunteers for working at the show and admire their dedication to seeing that the show is run in the best way possible. Of course, the work starts with the county programs and agents/program associates are to be commended for their support of this program. Congratulations on another great job!

Thanks to everyone who helped at the 2015 District and State 4‐H Horse Championships. We are now gearing up for the 2015 Mississippi State Fair in October and the 2016 District and Dixie National Junior Round‐Up Livestock Shows in January and February. Coming up over the next month will be the District and State 4‐H Horse Show Meetings. I encourage all counties to participate in their respective meeting and hope that all decisions made will lead to successful shows next year.
