Welcome to the 2015 Illinois Water Polo All State and Hall of Fame Awards Banquet. It’s been another great season. Tonight is our opportunity to honor the athletes, coaches, and Hall of Fame inductees, as they take their place in history as being the “Best of the Best”. Congratulations on a tremendous season to all our award winners as we prepare recognize them this evening.

This year, IHSA Water polo had another stabilizing year with 79 boys’ teams, and an increase to 71 girls’ teams. It was encouraging to see the increase with our girl’s bracket as we continue to grow the sport. As we wrap up our fourteenth season, we have increased the boys’ teams by 25%, and the girls’ teams by 32%, since our inception by the IHSA. Our future focus continues with our downstate cities coming on board for the sport to maintain healthy growth. With new schools, and new pools, being built each year along with the efforts of your Illinois Water Polo, and Midwest Water Polo boards, we continue to tap into the potential our area has with nowhere to move but up. It’s a true indication of the dedication, and efforts, that our athletes, and coaches, give each year.

At this time, I would like to take a moment to thank the following individuals for their efforts on Illinois Water Polo in putting all the details of this event together along with all the other things they do to keep Water Polo moving forward in Illinois. A very special thank you to Tom Musch for compiling the Slide Presentation for our event tonight!! Special thanks to our officers, Perry Korbakis (Vice-President), Carol Macola (Secretary), Ron Biamonte (Treasurer). Committee representatives are: Perry Korbakis (Communications & Referees), Eddie Prystalski (Fundraising), Bill Walztoni, Jeff Wimer, Pat Bauer, and Rich Norman (Hall of Fame), Garrin Kapecki (Masters and Scholarship), Chris Cloy (Player Recognition and Website Development), Lynn Castro (Website), and Sally Stelnicki (Banquet). For the last 27 years, water polo players who are seniors are nominated by their coaches to receive the Senior Scholastic Player of the Year Award. Each coach has the opportunity to nominate players they feel exemplify the outstanding qualities of the sport, have a minimum of a 3.5 grade point average or better along with being involved in activities within their school and community in addition to being a top academic student. CLASS OF 1986In the sport of water polo, the most critical offensive player in the pool is called the “two-meter man,” or the “hole man.” His is the most physically demanding position in the game, for the offensive attack revolves around him, and the defense, knowing this, conspires to disrupt him by any means necessary. His job is to set himself between two and four meters from the opponent’s goal and to maintain that position, from which he scores, passes, and absorbs fouls. He is point-guard, shooting forward, and high-post man all rolled into one. He provides structure, creates movement, and produces opportunity. The good ones can dominate the game, and one of the most dominating two-meter men in the history of the Catholic League played for Loyola in the mid-80s. His name was Tom Tomsheck. Long and lanky as a 6’0 freshman, Tom put on muscle and strength as he grew to a broad-shouldered 6’3 by the time he earned his third varsity letter as a senior. Combining advantageous height and wingspan with a keen understanding of the game, he controlled the flow of the offense like few others could. He brought a team-oriented approach to the pool, patiently working to get his teammates engaged yet grabbing the opportune moment to take over games. By the time he ended his playing days at Loyola, he had become a one-man wrecking crew in Illinois water polo, leading the Ramblers in goals and assists and earning selection to the All-State First team in both 1985 and 1986. After graduation from Loyola, Tom attended the United States Naval Academy, where he earned four varsity letters in a brilliant collegiate career. Named to the All-East Second Team in 1988 as a sophomore, he was selected to the All-East First Team in both 1989 and 1990 after leading the Midshipmen in goals and assists. Tom tried out for and was chosen to participate in the U.S. Olympic Festival in 1989, 1990, 1991, and 1993, thereafter capping his collegiate athletic experience with his induction into the U.S. Naval Academy Hall of Fame. Upon earning his Bachelor of Science degree in 1990, Tom served a four-year stint in the Navy as a Surface Warfare Officer in San Diego. He now lives in Grand Rapids, MI with his wife Betsy and three children – Anna (15), Tom III (14) and John (11).

Caroline WojtasPalatine High School, Virginia Military Institute Caroline has always been talented as an athlete and was a four year Varsity starter for our team. She has earned numerous accolades during her high school career including multiple All-Conference, All-Sectional, and All-State awards. Caroline has been a pivotal piece of the emergence of Palatine Girls Water Polo as a respectable program. What really sets Caroline apart however is her leadership on the team. Even as a Freshman, she was a good role model, leading by example and always giving her best effort. Over the last four years, Caroline has emerged from a good role model to a truly extraordinary leader. She is a high character, hard-working, and motivated individual. She has been a leader and a role model for her teammates, and when she speaks, her teammates listen with utmost respect and adoration. Caroline has left a defining impact on the Palatine High School Water Polo program and this team is in a much better place due to her efforts and accomplishments.

Daniel FarmerFenwick High School, Bucknell University Danny followed in his brother’s footsteps, first to Windy City Water Polo where as an age grouper, he met Coach Perry and ultimately, came to Fenwick High School. While at Fenwick, Danny was a starter on an IHSA Championship team his sophomore year and an IHSA 2nd place team his junior year. As one of the senior captains, Danny has been a tremendous leader this water polo season. He expects a lot from himself and his teammates. He is constantly encouraging his teammates to perform to the best of their abilities and knows how to individually motivate each of the guys on the team. Danny is also a very coachable athlete. He follows directions and puts in a great amount of work. For the past two years, Danny has been on the St. Louis DeSmet Invite All-Tournament Team as well as the MCAC 1st team All-Conference Team. He has also been 1st team All-Sectional and All-State. He is determined and focused and ready for the challenges, academically and athletically, that he will encounter in college and beyond. He is well deserving of this award and will continue the great legacy of excellence that Coach Perry was able to establish.

In 2011, Illinois Water Polo lost a legend.

In its 3rd year, the IWP Board of Directors is proud to honor Coach Perry with the awarding of scholarships in his name. The funds awarded to each athlete are intended to help support the Illinois Water Polo athletes who aspire to continue playing in college. The award challenges players to

“Dream Big” and strive for their full potential.
