ROBLEY REX VA MEDICAL CENTER With a creative interweaving of design elements that establish a bal- ance of culture and place, the future Robley Rex VA Medical Center em- braces a model of care which serves and honors our Veterans in an environment that promotes respect, dignity, and healing. By integrating nature with architecture, the design concept reinforces the healing environment. This concept embod- ies the idea of healing with Honor. A linear garden sweeps across the site in a broad stroke and weaves the exterior landscape through the heart of the project. The garden, and light-filled concourse it con- nects with, are symbolic of the “journey” every Veteran encounters in the course of their service. Five moments in time, place, and reflection: Join, Train, Bond, Honor, and Thank. Each setting offers a unique experience, from contemplation to celebration; and provide a framework for integrating art, education, and support. The multi-story concourse is the core of the campus. Awash in daylight and integrating three garden terraces on different levels, its galleries, cafes, seating areas, and interactive install- ments provide the sense of camarade- rie, tradition, and shared history that honors our Veterans for their service.

Drawing once more from both the culture of the armed forces and natu-ral beauty of the locale, the architec-tural expression integrates patterns and textures derived from natural local limestone stratifications as well as from patterns present in military ribbons and medals. The landscape and architecture themselves echo the strength and courage of the men and women serving with distinction.

Delivering comfort and care is strengthened by the weave of nature and design. Plentiful daylight, acces-sible gardens, and scenic views draw the outside in and the inside out. Pa-tients, our Veterans in need, and their families can find solace beyond the active concourse in quiet air gardens and elevated courtyards strategically placed throughout the architecture. Places created for reflecting upon the journey toward healing and the steps along the way. The way this place em-braces the veteran with dignity, duty, and care are the means in which the healing environment honors our Vet-erans for their service and sacrifice.
