2015-16 MEN’S ICE HOCKEY GAME NOTES American Int’l Yellow Jackets (0-8-0, 0-3-0 AHC) at #20 Robert Morris Colonials (3-1-2, 2-0-2 AHC) November 6-7, 2015 - 7:05 p.m. - 84 Lumber Arena - Pittsburgh, Pa. OH FOR OCTOBER: AIC is still searching for their first victory of the 2015- 16 season as they finished the month of October 0-8. This marks the worst start to a season for the Yellow Jackets since starting 0-12 to begin the 2006-07 campaign. Things aren’t getting any easier for the Jackets either as they face the 20th ranked Colonials of Robert Morris for a weekend set. LAST TIME OUT: AIC was swept in a weekend series at home against de- fending league champion RIT by scores of 4-2 and 6-2 while Robert Morris nearly swept #10 Michigan as they led 3-1 after two periods on Friday night before the Wolverines scored four third period goals. The Colonials came out on Saturday firing on all cylinders and recorded a 4-0 shutout victory. LAST TIME THEY MET: The two schools met four times last season with Bobby Mo going 3-0-1 against the Jackets including sweeping them 5-3 and 9-4 at 84 Lumber Arena in January. PLENTY TWENTY: Almost one year to the date the Colonials and Yellow Jackets faced off in West Springfield with RMU being ranked 20th as well. The teams skated to a 5-5 tie on Friday evening marking just the second time in the program’s Division I era that AIC picked up a point aginst a na- tionally ranked opponent. Sophomore Andrew DeBrincat assistsed on three tallies while junior Austin Orszulak recorded a goal and an assist. Sopho- more Johno May also lit the lamp for AIC while Alexander MacMillan ‘15 recorded a pair of scores. ALL-TIME SERIES: Bobby Mo is 13-3-3 all-time against AIC dating back to 2008 when they defeated the Jackets 10-2 in the first-ever meeting be- tween the schools. The Colonials also hold a 2-8-2 record in Atlantic Hockey play since 2010 when they joined the league after the CHA disbanded. MY HOMETOWN: Junior Austin Orszulak continues to be the must see attraction in Springfield, Mass. as the local product is averaging just shy of a point per game so far this season with three goals and four assists for six points. The alternate captain collected a pair of goals in the four games against RMU last season and will look to light the lamp again as he has been held without a goal the last five contests after scoring one in each of the first three games of the season. 2015-16 Schedule/Results O October 10 New Hampshire L, 3-7 16 Alaska-Fairbanks+ L, 2-7 17 Alaska-Anchorage+ L, 2-6 23 Penn State L, 3-8 24 Penn State L, 3-5 27 SACRED HEART* L, 1-4 30 RIT* L, 2-4 31 RIT* L, 2-6 November 6 Robert Morris* 7:05 p.m. 7 Robert Morris* 7:05 p.m. 10 SACRED HEART* 7:05 p.m. 20 Niagara* 7:05 p.m. 21 Niagara* 7:05 p.m. 24 Holy Cross* 7:05 p.m. December 1 Bentley* 7:05 p.m. 11 ARMY* 7:05 p.m. 12 ARMY* 4:05 p.m. January 2 CANISIUS* 7:05 p.m. 3 CANISIUS* 4:05 p.m. 5 HOLY CROSS* 7:05 p.m. 8 Air Force* 7:05 p.m. 9 Air Force* 5:05 p.m. 22 Bentley* 7:05 p.m. 23 BENTLEY* 7:05 p.m. 26 Princeton 7:00 p.m. 29 Mercyhurst* 7:05 p.m. 30 Mercyhurst* 7:05 p.m. February 5 NIAGARA* 7:05 p.m. 6 NIAGARA* 3:05 p.m. 9 UMASS-AMHERST$ 7:05 p.m. 12 RIT* 7:05 p.m. 13 RIT* 7:05 p.m. 16 UMASS-LOWELL 7:05 p.m. 19 Holy Cross* 7:05 p.m. 20 HOLY CROSS* 7:05 p.m. 24 BENTLEY* 7:05 p.m. BOLD indicates Home contest * = Atlantic Hockey Contest + = Brice Alaska Goal Rush $ = MassMutal Center Game

ROOKIE SENSATION: Freshman Shawn McBride has been sensational so far this season for AIC as their first-line center. He is the reigning Atlantic Hockey Rookie of the Week after totalling four points in three games with a pair of goals and assists. He did switch linemates this past weekend and it opened him up for three points against RIT. He showed some fancy stickwork on Friday night for a goal as he stole the puck in the neutral zone and went forehand, backhand, forehand and finished five-hole for a score.

FRESHMAN FURY: Along with McBride this season five freshman have secured goals and another has added an assist to total six of nine freshman with points already on the season. Travis Douglas registered one goal and an assist in the series finale against the Nittany Lions two weeks ago while Marc Dubeau and Lucas Bombardier each have a goal and assist with Johnny Mueller totaling one goal and a pair of helpers for three points.

SPECIAL TEAMS STRUGGLES: AIC continues to stiffle on both the PP and PK only scoring 3 times in 22 chances and only stopping the opposition 8-of-23 times. While their PK is tied for last in the league with Niagara their PP is surpris-ingly above RIT Air Force and Niagara. RMU, however, ranks second in the league in PP (6/23) and tied-third for PK (18/21).

LIGHT THE LAMP: AIC has given up the most goals in the conference (47) while RMU has scored the second most (26). The Jackets have struggled to stop their opponents in the first and second frames allowing 18 in each while the Colonials have scored ten times in each period this season. AIC also enjoys first period success scoring nine times in the opening period.

FAST START, SLOW FINISH: So far this season AIC has scored the opening goal of the game in four contests even holding two-goal leads on a pair of occasions. But they are being outscored 18-3 in the second period so far this season.

ROAD WARRIORS: AIC has already traveled over 10,000 miles this season with trips to UNH, Alaska and Penn State and all told the Jackets will travel 18,758 miles this season for road contests. This trip marks the third longest of the season for AIC after Alaska and Air Force next semester.

Gary WrightHead Coach, 32nd Season, Vermont ’76

Gary Wright is entering his 32nd season at the helm of the Yellow Jacket ice hockey program. He is AIC’s all-time winningest coach, compiling a 306-583-73 record and is currently the longest tenured Division I hockey coach.

In 2013-14, Wright joined a select few NCAA Division I hockey coaches by posting his 300th career win on Feb. 7 with a 2-1 win over Army. With Wright at the helm, the Yellow Jackets had several notable victories during the 2013-14 campaign including a 3-2 victory over UMass and a 5-3 win versus eventual Atlantic Hockey Association runner-up, Canisius.

The 2012-13 season, the Yellow Jackets recorded their best record since turning to Division I in the 1998-99 season. AIC’s 12 wins was the most since 2002-03 (10), and earned them a berth in the Altantic Hockey Cham-pionship Tournament.

The 2007-08 season was highlighted by a pair of ties against traditional college hockey powers. The Yellow Jackets recorded a 1-1 tie against then 16th-ranked Rensselaer at the annual RPI Holiday Tournament and later tied Dartmouth 3-3. AIC’s tie with Rensselaer marked the first time in the Division I era of the program that the Yellow Jackets re-corded a win or tie against a nationally ranked opponent.

In 2003-04, the Yellow Jackets claimed their first postseason victory since the 1989-90 season, when they defeated host Army 4-3 in the first round of the inaugural Atlantic Hockey tournament. Guillaume Caron was named a First Team Atlantic Hockey All-Star. AIC has had eight all-conference selections since elevating to Division I.

Wright was instrumental in the Yellow Jackets becoming a charter member of the Division I Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Hock-ey League. Wright became the first coach to earn MAAC Hockey League Coach of the Year honors after leading AIC to a fifth-place finish with an 11-14-4 Conference record in their first season of Division I hockey.

Prior to elevating to the Division I level, Wright guided the Yellow Jackets to the ECAC playoffs in six of the last eleven seasons the program

competed at the Division II level, capturing the ECAC East Championship during the 1989-90 campaign.

Before becoming the eighth head hockey coach at American International College in 1984, Wright spent five years as an assistant at the University of Maine. His coaching career started at the high school level as he directed the Rice Memorial ice hockey program in Burlington, Vt. Wright spent three seasons at Rice and his 1977-78 squad was state runner-up.

A native of Vermont, Wright has authored a book for youth hockey coaches titled, Pass the Biscuit. He also served as a member of the NCAA Division II-III Men’s Ice Hockey Committee for six years.

During the summer months, Wright works as an instructor at several noted hockey camps across New England and is the director of the Individual Skills Hockey Clinic. In the summers of 1992-95, he served on the USA Hockey, Select-16 Camp Staff held in Lake Placid, N.Y., and St. Cloud, Minn.

Wright has given presentations at the American Hockey Coaches’ Association (AHCA) Convention on three occasions, and each fall he directs the USA Hockey Associate level certification for area youth hockey coaches on the AIC campus. He is presently serving a term on the Hobey Baker Memorial Award Committee.

A 1976 graduate of the University of Vermont, Wright was a member of the Catamounts hockey team and recipient of the Coaches Award during his senior year.
