2015–16 Annual Report

504 W National Ave | Milwaukee, WI 53204 | 414–902–2103 | milwaukeeballet.org

A turning point in any dancer’s education is the moment when they

find their internal center of gravity. This changes everything. Suddenly,

jumps are higher and multiple pirouettes are easy. Building on previous

lessons of education and practice allows performance to transcend

to a new level.

This year has been transformative for Milwaukee Ballet. The support for

the Campaign for New Work demonstrates just how much our dancers

and artistic programming mean to our audiences. The Milwaukee Ballet

School & Academy continues to be a model for training programs

nationwide. Our Community Engagement programs such as Relevé

and Tour de Force share our love of ballet with many who might not

ordinarily have the opportunity to participate.

Our work would not be possible without enthusiasm and

encouragement from our Board, dancers, staff, volunteers, students,

parents, supporters, audience members — AND YOU. Looking to the

future, Milwaukee Ballet is poised to leap even higher. We are grateful

that you have joined us on the journey.

“I started going to the ballet to expose my daughter to the classics – both music and

dance…I’ve continued to stay because of the talent of the dancers.”

-Arhonstisa Theoharis, Subscriber of over 20 years

he Milwaukee Ballet II program, established in 1978, nurtures

and develops dancers’ technical skills and artistry required for a

professional career in dance. The curriculum is based on the artistic

vision of Milwaukee Ballet. It gives dancers the training needed

to bridge the gap between student and professional through

performing opportunities with the Milwaukee Ballet Company, as

well as performances created specifically for Milwaukee Ballet II.

These dancers are a vital part of the Department of Community

Engagement’s mission to reach and educate the community. Their

participation in these programs fully enhances their education.

2015–16 MBII PROGRAM

Milwaukee Ballet School & Academy (MBSA) offers a fun and creative

environment with a commitment to inspiring, nurturing and sustaining

a love of dance in every student. MBSA has trained many professional

dancers throughout the years. The majority of students bring their

passion for dance to class and are looking to cultivate and express their

inner artist, but also develop invaluable life skills. In September 2015,

MBSA achieved full membership status with the National Association of

Schools of Dance (NASD). This ten-year membership proves MBSA, the

only accredited professional studio school in the Midwest, has exceeded

the national standards of the NASD.

The discipline of the program carries over into all aspects of her life, whether that is in

Milwaukee Ballet’s Community Engagement programs promote

confidence, a healthy lifestyle, and creativity through participatory

workshops and performances. Our programs take place in studios,

libraries, community centers, and hospices. The work we do is gaining

regional and national attention. Tour de Force is a unique collaboration

between the Milwaukee Ballet and Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin.

It provides adaptive ballet classes to extraordinary children with varying

physical disabilities, and was filmed as a documentary that aired on

Milwaukee Public Television last winter.

FISCAL REPORT | 16

Milwaukee Ballet continues to be a fiscally sustainable organization.

Ticket sales, as well as registrations for the MBSA and Summer Intensive,

exceeded budget. We are grateful for the contributions from our

generous individual, foundation and corporate donors, locally and

nationally. This year, almost 92% of the company's resources were

allocated in support of Milwaukee Ballet's programs and services, and

we finished FY16 with a positive bottom line..
