 次の英文を読み,設問に答えなさい。(38点)

1 The Galapagos Islands are located in the Pacific Ocean about 1,000

kilometers from South America. The islands and the

surrounding ocean are a

marine park that is a unique living museum of evolution. Three different ocean

currents meet at the Galapagos, which makes the islands a melting pot of marine

species. The islands were formed by volcanic activity which continues to this day.

This volcanic activity and the great

separation of the islands from the nearest

continent led to the development of unusual animal life such as the land iguana*

and the giant tortoise*. Charles Darwin visited the islands in 1835. One species of

bird there

inspired him to develop his famous theory of evolution.

2 The Galapagos consist of about 120 islands. The largest islands are Isabella,

Santa Cruz, Fernandina, Santiago, and San Cristobal. These larger islands were

formed by undersea volcanoes that have been inactive for millions of years. The

land on these islands

gradually rises up to old volcano craters. There are

considerable differences between the islands in altitude* and size. The islands are

also separate from each other, which means that different species have developed

on each island.

―〔7〕―1 ―

Page 3: 2014年度一般入学試験前期A日程 入学試験問題 1時限...wildlife on the island are the Galapagos giant tortoises. There are eleven different species of tortoises on

3 The land on the larger islands rises from sea level to a high altitude, so

there are several different climate zones on each island. Along the coasts, there

are beaches, bays, and mangrove swamps. Away from the coast is a dry zone, and

this is the most common environment on all the islands. Above the dry zone is a

humid zone. It is very wet and covered by a

thick fog throughout the night.

Finally there is a grassy zone on the

summits of the larger islands. Moisture is

maintained here in

temporary pools that form after it rains.

4 The native wildlife includes reptiles and birds. Among the most famous

wildlife on the island are the Galapagos giant tortoises. There are eleven different

species of tortoises on different islands. There are iguanas that live on the land

and in the sea. There are fifty-seven different kinds of birds including the one

which Darwin studied and collected during his stay. There are also several kinds

of gulls and other sea birds. The animals native to the islands include seals, sea

lions, rats, and bats. Several different kinds of sharks and whales live in the

waters around the islands. Turtles are also common. They

lay their eggs on the

island beaches.

 次の英文を読み,設問に答えなさい。(42点)

1 In the United States, about 500,000 Native Americans live on 275

reservations. A reservation is the land given to the tribe* by the U.S. government.

Most tribes were moved to reservations in the 1800s when the U.S. government

seized their traditional lands. The Navajo reservation is the largest of all, and it

now has a population of 174,000. Although the Navajos have their own

government, they are also

citizens of the United States.

2 Members of the Navajo tribe have been

honored for helping the United States

and Allied forces*

defeat Japan in World War II. Twenty-nine members of the

Navajo tribe received Congressional Gold Medals for creating a secret code. Three-

hundred more tribe members received Congressional Silver Medals for their part in

the Code Talkers program.

3 The reason for these awards is that the code talkers from the Navajo tribe

helped shorten World War II for the Allied forces in the Pacific. They used the

Navajo language of their Indian tribe as a secret weapon. Navajo is a complex

language, which is

extremely difficult to learn to speak. In 1942, only a few people

who were not Navajo could speak it at all.

4 The code talkers used Navajo words to

express the meaning of orders given

by Marine commanders*. For example, different kinds of planes were represented

by Navajo words as different kinds of birds. A bombing plane was called a “jay-

sho” in Navajo, which is a “buzzard” in English. A fighter plane was a “da-he-tih-

hi”, or a humming bird. Other animal words in Navajo were also used to have

different meanings. “Chay-da-gahi” is the word for turtle in Navajo and in code

talk, it meant a

tank.

5 More than four-hundred code talkers served during World War II sending

messages and the enemy never broke their code. One American general* reportedly

said the Marines could not have

captured the island of Iwo Jima without the help

of the code talkers.

6 The code was kept secret for many years even after the war. Military officials

considered it so valuable that no one was

permitted to talk about it until 1969.

After that, the code talkers spoke about their work. They said they were proud to

have been United States Marines, or in their language, “Washindon be Akalh B-

kosilai.”
