Goodyear Fruits of the Harvest Grieg Piano Concerto Anastasia Rizikov, piano Berlioz Symphonie Fantastique

Our 67th season opens with a cornucopia of symphonic delights! Pianist and Composer Stewart Goodyear makes a welcome return to the NSO stage. We showcase the incredibly poised, 15-year old international sensation, Canadian-born Anastasia Rizikov, and a sparkling tale of creative imagination is très Fantastique!

Masterworks 2: Will to Live Sunday, November 30, 2014 at 2:30 p.m. Kenneth Woods, guest conductor

Ullmann Chamber Symphony, op. 46a

Beethoven Symphony No. 4

Night’s darkest hour holds the fragile promise of light. Written in the 1940’s, these works by Ullmann and Britten transcend the heartbreak of war with the unwavering, life-affirming power of music. Fresh and spontaneous, Beethoven’s often-neglected 4th Symphony recommits us to the supremacy of joy.

Welcome to the NSO’s 14-15 Concert Season — a season full of emotion both artistically and historically, as we bid farewell to Brock University and eagerly await our move to Partridge Hall in the new Performing Arts Centre. Expectations will be high as we take to a venue that will markedly increase our visibility in the Region, and the added capacity and stage space will allow us to move our repertoire towards larger works. As an ensemble we quickly need to familiarize ourselves with how our ‘personality’ can be imprinted on these pieces and our new home.

The works we’ve selected for the 2014/15 season reflect the steady advancement of our core, and my belief that our audience is increasingly comfortable with the more adventurous programming. That being said, it must be noted that every ‘risk’ we take is carefully balanced to ensure that important, possibly unfamiliar works, are presented alongside those that relate back to the standard repertoire. Last year’s successful presentation of Suk’s Fairy Tale encouraged my resolve that the direction in programming is being met favorably by YOU. I cherish the ideas you have presented to me along the way.

A community and its culture go hand in hand. When the NSO makes its move to Partridge Hall, the orchestra will not only be part of this cultural and perceptual shift, we will make the trip down the hill together into St. Catharines’ revitalised and thriving downtown.
