No sign of student missing since Thanksgiving Despite an outpouring of volunteer support and the participation of the FBI, no progress has been made in the search for Shane Montgomery, the 21-year old Roxborough native and West Chester University student, last seen leaving Kildare’s Irish Pub at 2 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day.

Lie detector tests have been administered to people who last saw Montgomery and surveil-lance footage is being investigated, reports say.

A reward of $25,000 is being offered for the discovery of Montgomery after Kildare’s kicked in an extra $10,000. METRO

Cosby out at Temple Comedian Bill Cosby resigned Monday from the Temple University Board of Directors amid allegations of sexual abuse leveled against the Philadelphia native by women he had worked with.

“I have always wanted to do what would be in the best interests of

the university and its students,” Cosby, 77, said in a statement. “As a result, I have tendered my resignation from the Temple University Board of Trustees.”

The board of trustees accepted the resignation and “thanks him for his service to the university,” according to the state-ment.

Cosby sat on the board for 32 years. METRO

Three members of the North Philly Blackhawks 2010 Pop Warner national football championship team stood in their black- and gold-lettered jackets Monday on a green field with clear lines of white.

Four years ago these three young men — Keith Moorison, Qashah Carter, and Najee Richburg — were bashing and thrash-

ing on a brown field spot-ted with patches of green.

Carter, 16, gazed across the artificial play-ing surface illuminated by stadium lighting, consid-ering a question: If they played here while fight-ing for the championship, would it have helped their chances?

“It would have been nice,” said Carter, “but it wouldn’t have made a dif-ference.”

The field at 11th and Cecil B. Moore in the heart of North Philadel-phia and Temple Univer-sity’s campus unveiled $2.5 million renovation Monday afternoon, the first in the team’s 45-year history.

If the Blackhawks won without the new digs, what will they do with them? Coach Keon Savoy knows: “Now we don’t have to cancel practice

The fields will be shared between the Blackhawks and St. Joe’s Prep High School athletic teams, which contributed money along with the City of Philadelphia, Phil-adelphia Local Initiatives Support Corporation and the Philadelphia Eagles. Temple University offered a small donation, but it was not accepted, an offi-cial said.

But despite the new digs, the three players said it can’t change the de-sire to win, but maybe it can instill a sense of pride.

“They can learn to ap-preciate something and feel pride,” said Moori-son, 17, “seeing that team

name on the field and coming from playing on dirt piles to a turf field.”

“It will motivate them,” Carter added, “be-cause they can see what happens when you really work for something.”

Penny Johnson gets help signing up for Medicaid from enrollmentwspecialist Veronica Badillo at Quality Community Health Care, Inc., in North Philadelphia on Monday. / CHARLES MOSTOLLER

Healthy PA goes into eff ect, but how long will it last?

Penny Johnson has health issues. Many health issues. And until today she had no way to pay for them.

“I got a lot of medical care. I’m sick. I have lupus. I have blood clots. Right now I need bloodwork done and I can’t pay to get it done,” the 54-year old North Philly resident said Monday.

Johnson became one of the first Pennsylvanians to sign up for health insur-ance through Healthy PA, a Medicaid-like program that went into effect Monday and expanded eligibility for subsidized insurance to 600,000 Pennsylvanians.

Pennsylvania. Some 600,000 residents are eligible for health care under a new state program.

Quoted

“I got a lot of medical care. I’m sick. ... I need bloodwork done and I can’t pay to get it done.”Johnson

Her monthly bill for co-payments on medicines to treat the lupus costs $500. “I can’t afford this by my-self,” she said at Quality Community Health Care at 25th and Lehigh Avenue.

Johnson was told her Medicaid assistance would be terminated Monday, adding to pressure to find a solution. “I haven’t re-

ally been sleeping good because I’m stressing. Now I can take care of myself,” she said.

Some health care ad-vocates have doubts about Healthy PA, which Gov.-elect Tom Wolf, who takes office Jan. 20, did not sup-port and may dismantle.

“We are happy that folks are getting coverage. Is Healthy PA the ideal plan that we want to see? No,” said Antoinette Kraus, di-rector of the Pennsylvania Health Access Network.

“It’s a very limited package. ... You’re creat-ing a whole other system that’s separate from Med-icaid and the [Obamacare] marketplace,” Kraus said. “We’re going to continue to advocate to the Wolf administration to fix the problems.”

Changing health care

Will Healthy PA last? Healthy PA was de-signed by by Gov. Tom Corbett as an alterna-tive to a straight expan-sion of Medicaid under Obamacare.

Individuals with an income between 100 and 138 percent of the federal poverty level are eligible to sign up for subsidized insurance programs off ered by private companies.

Pennsylvania has a health care marketplace as part of the Aff ord-able Care Act. Aides to incoming Gov. Tom Wolf said that even if the Democrat discon-tinues Healthy PA, en-rollees wan’t have their health care disrupted.

SEPTEMBER SAFETY TIPS:The back-to-school season is a time that can be stressful for both parents and students. Aside from the obvious, back to school comes with new traffic patterns and added hazards to the roadways.

Here are some tips to remember:

• Exercise extra caution as sun glare can be a factor during these times

• Come to a complete stop at a safe distance from a bus when the red lights are flashing and the stop sign arm is extended - this indicates the bus is stopped and children are getting off the bus

• Never pass a stopped school bus - it is illegal in all 50 states

John McCain says America needs another Harry Tru-man.

Truman’s courageous efforts to keep the U.S. military involved in the Korean War, even as the overwhelming majority of Americans wanted to pull soldiers out of the conflict let the military reach a cease-fire, he said.

“Now today, Americans don’t want to be involved with things that are going on over in Iraq and Af-ghanistan, or most of the other places in the world,” said McCain, the Republi-can senator from Arizona and former presidential candidate said Monday at a meeting of the World Affairs Council of Philadel-phia at the Union League club.

“We need a Harry Tru-man, not that’s going to start a war, but we need a Harry Truman who is stead-fast in principles and belief in America’s indispensable role in the world,” said Mc-Cain.

“Yes, we are war weary,” said McCain, a former Navy aviator who spent five and a half years in a North Viet-

namese prison after he was shot down on a combat mission. “We were war weary after World War II ... but we’re going to be a lot more war weary if we allow ISIS to expand and continue to succeed. And believe me, they are suc-ceeding.”

McCain gave attendees his thoughts on Barack Obama’s presidency, Rus-sia’s leadership and how to

contain the Islamic State, also known as ISIS.

How best to combat the growing threat of Islamic terrorism should be a key topic in the 2016 presiden-tial race.

“I’m almost sorry I’m not running again,” said McCain, 79, “and that’s the only reason.”

Turning to Russia’s au-tocratic leader, Vladimir Putin, McCain said “he will go as far as he can get away with,” McCain said. “Vladi-mir Putin is an old KGB agent that is now trying to restore the Russian Em-pire. That’s what he says.”

McCain also paid hom-age to the late Sen. Arlen Specter, a Pennsylvania Democrat who died in 2012, as a colorful, mag-netic, entertaining and thoughtful.

“An individual that I enjoyed enormously serv-ing with,” he said. “People come and go in the United States Senate, but Arlen left his imprint.”

Obama White House

McCain was asked what

Obama has done well

during his Presidency.

• “I believe he has selected some good people in positions of

authority, for example our leaders in Iraq and Afghanistan.”

• “I think he has worked hard on some issues such as free trade.”

Public transit

PATCO revises schedule PATCO trains will run less frequently every week between Thursday afternoons and Monday mornings, beginning Dec. 4 at 10 a.m.

Trains will run on a single track as crews replace electrical cables, creating delays of 12-16 minutes.

Trains are still slated to run every 15 minutes in both directions from Monday morning through rush hour Thursday morning. TOMMY ROWAN

Philadelphia groups ask for support on ‘Giving Tuesday’

After the post-Thanks-giving shopping rush, nonprofits and charitable groups will be asking peo-ple to focus on supporting charitable causes.

“With everything that happens between Black Friday and Cyber Monday, we spend a lot of time fix-ated on ourselves. Giving Tuesday is a great way to refocus our energy where it really should be, which is helping out other people,” said Chris Bernholdt, co-or-ganizer of the Philly Dads Meetup.

The Philly Dads will be marking Giving Tuesday by

shopping at Target in King of Prussia for children in need of clothes, school sup-plies and toys, Bernholdt said. The goods will be de-livered through the non-profit Cradles to Crayons.

Many groups around Philadelphia are seeking donations to help fund their work.

Habitat for Human-ity Philadelphia has do-nors that will match up to $15,000 in donations on Giving Tuesday -— enough

funds to complete a house in South Philadelphia so a family can move in by the holidays, the group says.

The Pennsylvania Hor-ticultural Society (PHS) is seeking donations, and votes from the public on where their next pop-up garden should be.

“Especially for this gen-eration, they don’t just want to push a button and donate money — they want to be involved in the causes they contribute to,” said PHS spokesman Alan Jaffe.

#givingtuesdayphl

Do people give?

Fewer Philly groups are in-volved in “Giving Tuesday” this year.

“I think it’s a re-ally interesting idea, but I would be interested to see how successful it is over the next couple of years,” said Temple University law and tax professor Kathy

Mandelbaum, an expert in charitable giving.

While it’s a good cause, the holiday season is al-ready crowded, she said.

“Even if all it does is accelerate end-of-the-year giving, that’s a good a thing,” Mandelbaum said. “This is getting people to focus on charities four weeks earlier.”

Global stock markets fell on Monday as slowing factory activity in China and Europe added to wor-ries about weaker global growth. Apple shares dropped, while the yen briefly hit a seven-year low after Moody’s cut its rating on Japan.

Oil prices rebounded after hitting five-year lows, lifted by data suggesting that tumbling prices may have started affecting drilling activity in the fast-growing U.S. shale oil industry.

The day’s data added to

investor caution. Chinese purchasing managers data showed manufacturing slowed in November, sug-gesting the world’s second biggest economy was con-tinuing to lose momentum. Factory activity also slowed in France and Germany.

“The places where we are seeing strength are in the more defensive areas of the (stock) market. That’s tied to the perceived weak-ness in global growth,” said Kevin Caron, market strategist at Stifel, Nicolaus & Co in Florham Park, New Jersey. REUTERS

Obama requests $263M for Ferguson response

President Barack Obama asked Congress on Mon-day for $263 million for the federal response to the civil rights upheaval in Fer-guson, Missouri, and is set-ting up a task force to study how to improve modern-day policing.

The funds would pay for body cameras for police officers to use and expand training for law enforce-ment in an attempt to build trust in communities such as Ferguson, where a grand jury decided not to indict a white police officer in the August shooting death of an unarmed black teen-ager, the White House said.

commissioner Charles Ramsey and Laurie Robin-son, a George Mason Uni-versity professor who is a former assistant attorney general, will lead the task force on 21st-century polic-ing, officials said.

Also on Monday, the White House released the results of a months-long review into whether com-munity police need some of

the military-style weaponry and hardware sent to police departments since the 9/11 attacks.

“We’ve found that in many cases, these pro-grams actually serve a very useful purpose. What is needed, however, is much greater consistency in over-sight of these programs,” said White House spokes-man Josh Earnest. REUTERS

Deadline

120The review found a lack of consistency in how federal programs provide military-style equipment. As a result, Obama ordered his staff to develop recommendations within 120 days on how to provide greater oversight, such as requiring local civilian approval of such acquisitions.

U.S. officials have warned military personnel that Is-lamic State forces may be planning attacks against them in the United States, ABC News reported on Monday.

A joint intelligence bul-letin sent to law enforce-ment agencies by the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security urged members of the military to erase from their online social media accounts any-thing that would draw at-tention from “violent ex-tremists,” or reveal service

members’ identity, the news network said.

ABC said the govern-ment indicated late Sun-day it had obtained intel-ligence that Islamic State militants, who have taken over parts of Iraq and Syria with the intention of set-ting up a fundamentalist caliphate, were targeting the United States within its borders.

“The FBI recently re-ceived reporting indicat-ing individuals overseas are spotting and assessing like-minded individuals who are willing and capa-ble of conducting attacks against current and former U.S.-based members of the United States military,” the bulletin said, accord-ing to a Reuters source.REUTERS

This artist really knows how to “mask” the smell of sneakers.

California-based artist Gary Lockwood, aka Free-hand Profit, turns kicks into gas masks as a part of a project called “Sneak-erhead.” The 31-year-old explains why “duality” is at the heart of his “sole” style.

What’s your method in mask-making?Each mask I create is one-of-a-kind. I’ll never use the same shoe twice (a different color of that shoe maybe, but always constructed in a new way). They all start seemingly the same with the destruction of a coveted pair of sneakers. Then over the course of six weeks to six months, depending on the mask, I piece together the puzzle — backward.

Why did you start making them in the fi rst place?I’ve been a lifelong artist

‘Air’ on the side of caution

UK concerned by Russia’s testing of its air space Britain said on Monday it was concerned by a sharp increase in Russian military fl ights close to its borders that it said were designed to test its air defenses.

“It is entirely appropri-ate for NATO countries in particular to work together to respond to what is a change of Russia’s dealings with NATO and indeed the non-NATO European countries,” British Foreign Secretary Philip Ham-mond told a committee of lawmakers.

Interceptions of Russian

military aircraft by the mili-tary alliance’s planes have increased since Moscow annexed Ukraine’s Crimea region in March, in particu-lar over the Baltic region.

Last month, Britain’s Royal Air Force intercepted Russian military aircraft fl ying close to British air space at least twice, an occurrence which routinely triggers the scrambling of fi ghter jets to escort them away.

Earlier this year, Hammond, then defense secretary, said Britain had observed a resurgence in Russian air activity in recent years because of a Kremlin military overhaul. REUTERS

and hip-hop head. In 2010, I started a year-long, daily creative project called “MASK365.” For it I created, drew and painted a mask every day and published it through my blog. During the project I pushed myself out of my own creative comfort zones and craved new materials to work with.

I made a gas mask like the ones you see today — except with a handbag that had been thrown out. I don’t know much about handbags, but I was happy with the new piece and saw a lot of potential in the new artistic process.

What do the masks represent? They’re intended as works of art: sculptures that are individual art pieces but also a bigger part of my art through photography. Sneakers have always been a staple of hip-hop culture, and as such they became a part of my life. The gas mask comes in to play partially because I started writing graffiti in school. Graffiti writers will wear respirators to protect their lungs — and mask their identity. In the bigger picture of what the art is, the gas mask symbolizes the world at war, biological contagion and civil unrest. DMITRY BELYAEV, METRO WORLD NEWS

Like students at most art schools, the young women who attend the Moore Col-lege of Art in Center City spend their first year on campus diving into the ba-sics of art — learning the foundations of drawing, painting and sculpture.

pencils, brushes and crayons you’d expect to be in a young artist’s tool kit, Moore students also rely on something much more high-tech: their iPads.

Since 2012, Moore has given every first-year student a new Apple device once they arrive on campus. Administra-tors say they decided to implement the program because they wanted to in-tegrate the digital aspects of the curriculum with the more traditional parts of the program.

“One of the main ways the students use their iPads is as a multimedia sketchbook,” says profes-sor Lynn Palewicz, who teaches the foundation of art class all students are re-quired to take. “It’s a won-derful container for ideas and allows for experiment-ing and exploring.”

Digital natives

While the first generation of digital natives are now in college, many Moore

students, such as Ava Mallett hadn’t thought to incorporate digital media into their work before they started classes. “I actually didn’t know that was a thing,” says Mallet, a sophomore fine arts major who grew up in Texas.

Mallett says the tablet is particularly useful while experimenting with new ideas she’s not completely sure of. “Sometimes I will choose a different route with hash marks and colors.

This tax season brings about an unprecedented change: The next time you file your taxes, you’ll be fined if you don’t have health coverage. If you’re still uninsured, now is the time to pay attention. Open enrollment for the Affordable Care Act is tak-ing place now; enroll be-fore Feb. 15 to avoid fines on your 2015 tax return.

“For those who didn’t have coverage in 2014, the penalty will be 1 percent of their taxable income or $95, whatever is high-er,” says Lisa Zamosky, a health care correspondent and TurboTax blog con-tributor. That might not sound like much, but the penalty will continue to increase each year. “For 2015, the penalty will be 2 percent of your income or $325, whichever is higher, and for 2016 it will be even more,” she says.

Getting personal. How to talk about money with your family Some financial advisers look to the holidays as a good time for families to bond in an unlikely way: by talking about money. ccccc3Secrets to managing your timeEver since I made my fi rst million nearly 15 years ago, my life, and especially my work, has been insanely busy. But only recently have I gotten better at managing my time. Don’t let your crazy schedule derail your productivity. Here are three secrets I’ve learned to manage my time better.

Secret No. 1: Wake up early and work out

Every day is a marathon for me, as I receive nearly 3,000 emails and have several meetings and conference calls, not to mention that I spend the majority of the day trading stocks and making

video lessons. By waking up between 5 a.m. and 6 a.m., I’m able to get important tasks done before everyone else wakes up and starts bothering me. I’ve also learned that getting in a 30-minute workout in the early morning helps alleviate stress

and allows me to work more effi ciently over the course of my long days.

Secret No. 2: Shun TV and video games

I know far too many people who spend enormous amounts of time trying to relax by watching TV and playing video games, so much so that it sucks up their time and effi ciency. Don’t plop yourself down on the couch with two handfuls of junk food and give in to the temptation. If you do want to watch TV, do something productive during the commercial breaks.

Secret No. 3: Prioritize tasksWe are most effi cient early in the day, so that’s when I prioritize my important and favorite projects. Despite the pull to reply to emails, text messages and social media within minutes of receiving them, most are not pressing so you can and should respond later. Focus on your most complex projects and things that you’re most passionate about fi rst, and only afterwards concern yourself with dealing with questions and com-mentary from others.

Is it cool for Melissa Rivers to use her dead mom’s Twitter account?

I’ve got a social media etiquette quandary for you: What’s the policy for making use of a loved one’s Twitter account after he or she has passed away? What if that person is a hugely famous comedy pioneer? Fans of Joan Riv-ers got quite a shock over the holiday weekend when the comedienne start-ing tweeting again three months after she died. It turns out it was just her daughter, Melissa Rivers, taking over the account. “I finally figured out my mom’s password,” she tweeted.

Since then, Melissa has been posting mostly about trips to the theater with her son, Cooper, and the same tweets have been duplicating to her own account. But here’s the thing: Joan’s Twitter account has 2.22 million followers, while Melissa’s has just 231,000. She does know you can change the display name on a Twitter account, right? And the photo? It won’t even af-fect the follower count, if that’s what she’s worried

The first face to pop up in the new “Star Wars” trailer was that of Brit-ish actor John Boyega, apparently donning an Imperial Stormtrooper uniform. Granted, we know basically nothing about the plot of the new film or what his character is doing dressed like that, but some people already have a problem with it. Racist people, mostly. Well, Boyega is taking the high road, if cheekily. He posted a thank you for the massive outpouring of fan support, and at the end tossed in a pitch-perfect, “To whom it may con-cern… Get used to it.”

Rock ’n’ roll is the bottom line for The 1975 frontman Matt HealyInterview . The indie band’s lead singer on why playing the cliched rocker isn’t an act.

“It’s just f—ing go, go, go. I’m going to smoke a joint here to fill the cliche, but it’s the only time I can close the door away from every-body else,” says a weary-looking Matt Healy.

The lead singer’s rock band, The 1975, has pretty much been on a world tour for the past two years, and it’s not over yet. It’s no surprise that the 25-year-old Londoner is distract-edly pacing the trailer in the artists’ area at Reading Festival.

“People don’t really know this, but I’m a very ticky person,” he explains

through a smoke-soaked voice. Does he need the weed to relax? “I don’t need it; I don’t have that vice. I’ve always smoked a lot of weed and it’s kind of part of my identity,” he rebuts, before citing that all too frequently heard comparison to people who enjoy a glass of wine after work.

Healy’s defensiveness over his habit stems from “the stigma with smok-ing weed, especially in the U.K.; it is imbued with the idea of being slightly juve-nile,” he says. His under-standably slightly agitated rebuff continues between tokes: “I’ve got a big song [“Chocolate”] about it; I’ve been defined by it. If I were a junkie or a drug addict, and I was, like, strung out all the time, I wouldn’t be able to do 300 gigs a year.”

Try this ‘Guide’ to restarting your life

Interview. Lisa Edelstein’s new show features a woman fi guring out her

place in the world, a few years after most

people do it.

Abby McCarthy brings new meaning to the phrase “having it all.” The main character in Bravo’s first scripted series, “Girl-friends’ Guide to Divorce,” is manag-ing her personal and pro-fessional life so well, she’s writing advice books about how to do it right. Of course,

this makes it all the more difficult for her when,

secretly, her perfect marriage is

completely falling apart. By the end of the pilot episode, her thriving writing career

has torpedoed. But Lisa Edelstein (“House”), who plays Abby, says this is all part of the process of finding out who she is as an adult.

How would you describe Abby?Abby is a super bright, talented and funny writer who identifies with her public persona as an answer lady, knowing how to be the perfect mom, knowing how to be a great wife, knowing how to be a great lover. Her whole identity is wrapped around those ideas, and all of it sort of falls apart by the end of episode one. So she’s really a woman in search of herself. And she’s do-ing it at an age when one would expect to be more established, and instead she’s starting again.

Did you fi nd any parallels in your own life about what Abby goes through, being in the public eye?Certainly, being any kind of celebrity, there’s a lot of pitfalls. There’s a lot of dangers. You can really confuse your public per-sona with who you are as a human being and your own value as a human being, and that’s a very dangerous mindset to get in, when you only feel as good as people are perceiving you.

This is your fi rst starring role. Are you feeling the responsibility of that?

“Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce” premieres tonight at 10 p.m. on Bravo. / SERGEI BACHLAKOV, BRAVO

I’m loving it. I love this project. I feel like it uses every part of me, as opposed to having to use a sliver of yourself to move forward somebody else’s storyline. It’s really a fun opportunity and I’m super grateful for it. I always have fun on my jobs, but this has been a remarkable experience.

It seems like Abby and her husband, Jake, aren’t quite out of love with each other. Is there going to be a will they/won’t they aspect to

their relationship?Yes. These are two people who have barely dealt with each other for so long that by having to get a divorce and deal with each other, they’re remembering what they love about each other. So there’s still a will they/won’t they aspect to it go-ing through Season 1.

You just got married this year. Did your friends give you a hard time about the timing of starring in a show with divorce in the title?

I started the show about divorce the day after I got married. No, they wouldn’t give me trouble! Everyone’s super excited. This last year has been one of the most incred-ible years of my entire life. I am with a man that I was willing and happy to marry, which has never happened to me before, and I got this job of a lifetime. I got my dream job.

HEAD TO SUNNY LOS ANGELES WITH ‘THE ROCKETEER’ AND MORE

‘The Rocketeer’NETFLIX INSTANT

Streaming video was created to salvage an undeserved misfire such as 1991’s “The Rocketeer” — a breathlessly hyped would-be blockbuster that deserved at least better than modest returns. Hailing from a brief period when Hollywood thought the world clamored for

Netfl ix Instant

‘Who Framed Roger Rabbit’ One of the fi lms cited in “Los Angeles Plays Itself” is also one of the great LA fi lms: a case of corporate synergy that actually proved great for execs, fi lmmakers and viewers alike. Indeed, this, not 1990’s “The Two Jakes,”

is the proper sequel to “Chinatown”: a look at the city’s nasty evolution via business. Just because it teems with toons doesn’t make it any less savage.

Netfl ix Instant

‘Los Angeles Plays Itself’ “The Rocketeer” makes fi ne use of Hollywood. Yet it, alas, goes unmen-tioned in this exhaustive, brilliant documentary epic from fi lm professor and cine-essayist Thom Andersen that delves

deeply into the city’s use — and misuse — in the movies. Throughout its three hours, a city — both the real and the fi ctional one — comes thrillingly alive.

Bill Campbell gets a mask and jet pack in the 1930s-set “The Rocketeer.” / PROVIDED

Depression-era entertain-ment (see also: “Dick Tracy” and “The Shadow,” though Dave Stevens’ com-ic was more an homage), it fits a good ol’ country boy (Bill Campbell) with a Nazi-bred super-rocket, turning him into a bud-ding masked superhero fighting the Axis powers on U.S. soil.

As far as origin stories go, “The Rocketeer” is slightly more than slight.

In a fun turn, the main villain is an Errol Flynn-esque superstar (Timothy Dalton) who boasts Ger-man ties. Giddily directed by Joe Johnston (the first “Captain America”), it’s an alternate-world franchise starter, one where ’30s-set comics still rattle through the American imagination and where the capable Campbell and Dalton are mega-stars. But too late is never too late.

Food can make any place feel like home DVD. “The Hundred-Foot Journey” author Richard Morais talks eating as cultural relations.

There is a literal trip in “The Hundred-Foot Jour-ney,” with the clashing French and Indian restau-rants separated by exactly 100 feet. In the modern world, most people are making that same journey, though often much far-ther, for school or jobs or marriage.

For author Richard Morais, the son of an American mother and Por-tuguese father who grew up in Switzerland, food is something that’s become a way to feel at home any-where.

“People always say, ‘You’ve traveled around the world, where is home?’ Well, honestly, I’ve gotten to the point that home is anywhere I am getting a meal and sharing it with family and friends,” he says over dinner at White Street, the recently opened Tribeca restaurant of chef Floyd Cardoz, who created the dishes featured in the novel’s film adaptation.

“That’s as close to home as I’m ever gonna get, be-cause most of us are no-mads, we’re a mishmash of cultures, and we’re getting more and more mobile,” he says.he says.

Family gatherings

Food at the holiday table

Although a holiday gathering can be a great reason for people who may otherwise not see eye-to-eye to set aside their diff erences, Morais doesn’t recommend pushing your luck with the food. “Often it’s so stressful and people are so tired,” he says. “I think the lower-key meals are the ones where the real magic happens.” Another

piece of advice: Leave fusion cuisine to the pro-fessionals. Morais still re-members a dish by chef Floyd Cardoz, a barbecue pulled pork-style lamb seasoned with Indian spices. “It was exquisite; it was the perfect fusion. Now, sometimes fusion doesn’t work – it tastes like two warring plates – but when it works, it’s sublime.”

Visit Metro.us for Floyd Cardoz’s Beef Bourguignon a la Hassan recipe from the movie.

In the movie, available on DVD and On Demand today, young Indian chef Hassan Kadam (Manish Dayal) cooks his way into the esteem of Michelin-starred restaurant owner Madame Mallory (Helen Mirren), whose emotional

journey is the title’s metaphorical meaning. Cooking is Hassan’s passion, but also a way to preserve and share his heritage after his family was driven out of India and made their new home in the south of France.

Cooking food with that kind of significance can be an emotional ex-perience. “When you’re homesick,

the thing you crave most is food,” Morais points out. A dish that makes him nostalgic is codfish, which recalls memories of his fa-ther’s rare but cherished home-cooked meals.

“He’s sort of macho, a Portuguese background,

not very verbally demon-strative,” Morais says. “But he adored his children, and how he would [show] it was through food.”

Changing the way we see Iran Memoir. In “The Lonely War,” Nazila Fathi uses her personal narrative to dispel cliches and stereotypes.

NAZILA FATHI HAS BEEN AN IRANIAN CORRESPONDENT FOR OVER 20 YEARS.

HASSAN SARBAKHSHIAN

Serving as the Iranian cor-respondent for The New York Times — among other publications — has put Nazila Fathi’s life in danger many times over the past decade, but she never questioned her choice to become a jour-nalist.

“You become so over-whelmed by the events that somehow you don’t feel the fear,” she says. She adds that growing up in Iran during the Iranian Revolution made her ac-customed to living in a fearful climate, and she didn’t realize just how stressful her environ-ment was until she left the country.

Fathi’s new memoir, “The Lonely War” (out Dec. 9), chronicles the aftermath of the revolu-tion and how it affected her personally. The way Fathi weaves Iran’s nar-rative with her own makes for a compel-ling read. She tells us that one reason she wrote the book is to break down stereotypes peo-ple have about Iran.

Such ste-r e o t y p i n g was evident even as she f i n a l i z e d the book’s cover: “The publ i sher said people w o u l d n ’ t know this was a book about Iran unless we put a wom-a n wear-

ing a chador on the cov-er,” Fathi says. “When-

ever someone wants to use an image to represent Iran, it’s a picture of a woman in a chador. This is such a cliche, both

for the regime and here in the West. ... You

hardly ever come across a woman who lives here, in a free country, and wears the chador.” In the end, Fa-thi took her p u b l i s h e r ’ s advice and she’s ultimate-ly happy with the cover. “I hope that once

people read the book they learn

that these are not true per-ceptions of the country

and its people.”

Another misconcep-tion Fathi says people in the West have is that nuclear weapons are the most important is-sue to the Iranian peo-ple. “They don’t care about it. This is the most important issue in America’s foreign policy and Israel’s for-eign policy, but for Iranians, it’s a minor issue,” she says.

Instead, she says, they care about gaining more per-sonal freedoms. As the middle class has grown, Fathi says the people see freedoms that exist elsewhere and they want them, too.

When Iranian pop singer Morteza Pashaei died of cancer Nov. 14 at 30 years old, thousands of Iranians flooded the streets all across Iran to mourn for him. “Women, who are not permitted to sing in public, were singing his songs,” Fathi says. “It’s a sign that the

younger generation is vying for more personal freedom. They’re look-ing for an excuse to show their solidarity.”

It’s a fight the Iranian people are still fighting, and Fathi’s voice is one of 77 million — albeit a strong one. Her story is worth hearing; she did risk her life to tell it.

NEW DIABETES STUDY SHOWS:

A new clinical study has shown that the disease of TYPE II DIABETES CAN BEGIN TO BE REVERSED in as little as 1 WEEK!A free guide has just been made available to Type II Diabetics detailing an approach that appears to be more powerful than any drug known to modern science. The free diabetic guide explains in plain English how many diabetics have been able to reduce and eliminate their drugs and insulin injections, lose weight without exercise, reduce and eliminate the risk for diabetic complications, restore pancreatic function, and even become non-diabetic.

The free guide also reveals rarely used diagnostic testing that is helping doctors understand potential causes of diabetes beyond weight gain, genetics and lack of exercise.

Going out

Options for live music and dancing abound on Broad-way, but we’re putting Robert’s Western World at the top of our recom-mendation list. Grab a beer and fi nd a good spot to plant yourself because it’s about to get crowded. Tours

Sightsee

The RCA Studio B tour provides an intimate and knowledge-packed ex-perience that any music lover — not just country fans — can appreciate. Your tour guide will be an energetic wealth of stories, taking you through the years of the famous recording studio, which still operates today.

Hear tell of the time Dolly Parton refused to let Elvis cover “I Will Al-ways Love You” because he would own half of the publishing rights. Listen to clips from the Everly

Brothers and Waylon Jennings while getting a behind-the-scenes look at where they recorded — in fact, depending on when you go, you might get to see an artist recording.

If the studio is unoc-cupied, step inside and take a seat at the piano Elvis used.

The tour leaves from the Country Music Hall of Fame. Factor in time for a self-guided tour there before or after your Studio B stop. 222 Fifth Ave.615-416-2001www.studiob.org

Nashville, Tennessee, is widely known as the city of music, and for good reason. Pinball down Broadway, the South-ern town’s touristy yet charming main drag, and you’ll hear live music pouring out of every bar. Lynchburg

Take a scenic 80-minute drive outside the city lim-its to Lynchburg, a sleepy town of roughly 6,000 people and reminiscent of a sound stage for an old Western fi lm. It’s also, despite being in a dry county, home to the Jack Daniel Distillery.

After taking the distill-ery tour, treat yourself to lunch at Miss Mary Bobo’s Boarding House for a taste of true Southern comfort. The restaurant, opened in 1908, features nine dining rooms. Lunch

is served family style at 1 p.m., with a Lynchburg hostess at the helm of the table. She’ll tell you all about the town’s background and usually has an anecdote or two about Miss Mary Bobo

and some of the visitors she’s served. Feast on meatloaf, fried chicken, okra, baked apples with Jack, mac and cheese and biscuits. 295 Main St., Lynchburg, 931-759-7394, www.jackdaniels.com

Books. ‘Craft erina’ helps kids celebrate the performing arts Ballet is an obsession for many young girls, but the holidays are an especially magical time for dance. Ballerinas are gearing up for their big winter productions, and scoring tickets to “The Nutcrack-er” is on many holiday wish lists. If you’re gift hunting for the tiny danc-er in your life, consider the “Crafterina” series, written and illustrated by professional dancer Vanessa Salgado.

Salgado has long been teaching children’s dance classes in New York City; she created her storybook line as a

way to give her students a way to immerse them-selves in dance at home without grand jete-ing all over the apartment. “ABCs of Classical Ballet” familiarizes kids with the dance world vocabu-lary and includes a few other key ballerina tips, such as how to make a ballerina bun and pre-pare ballerina slippers for class.

The “Nutcracker Col-oring & Craft Book” has outlines of all the classic “Nutcracker” characters that kids can color in, as well as beautiful cos-

tume masks and paper-dolls they can color, cut out and play with.

The books range in price from $12.99 to $14.99 and can be purchased at Crafterina.com. EL

Better hiring regulations is the answerThe immigration crisis and the collapse of fi sheries have similar causes: years and years of under-regulation and oversight. Bans on fi shing, causing a crisis, could have been avoided if government had required moderate reductions over, say, the last 20 years. Maybe so many immigrants would not have entered unlaw-fully over the years if they were not able to get hired. But the government did not require strict enough methods for proving their legality for employment. If this were the case, the government could have been auditing businesses and prosecuting the own-ers of the businesses.DALE P. KLINE, VIA EMAIL

The journey through foot-ball is almost over for An-thony Robey, Jalen Fitzpat-rick and six other Temple seniors, who lost their final home game on Saturday to Cincinnati, 14-6, at a near-empty Linc.

Their journey through life is soon to begin. They’ve seen a lot and ac-complished much during their time in cherry and white, which will more than likely end Saturday in New Orleans vs. Tulane, unless the 5-6 Owls can win and get a bowl invite the following day.

“I remember we were 8-4 [in 2010] and never made it to a bowl game,’’ said Robey, a fifth-year senior who is working on his masters in crimi-nal justice.  “Who knows what’s gonna happen? But we’re still going to go out there next week and play hard and shoot for our sixth win.”

Robey began his Temple

career under Al Golden, then saw Steve Addazio come in for two years, fol-lowed by Matt Rhule., who hopes to finish with a .500 record in his second year.

“It would be great get-ting to a bowl game,” wide receiver Fitzpatrick said. “Not just for the seniors, but for the whole team to experience it, so they know what to do for next year

and going forward.”When they look back,

though, both Robey and Fitzpatrick can’t believe how quickly it’s gone.

“I didn’t know what to expect,” Fitzpatrick said. “I wasn’t really recruited very hard, so I was just thank-ful to be in college.  It’s gone pretty fast, but it will end well if we win a bowl game.”

While the seniors won’t be around to see the end result, their efforts haven’t gone unnoticed in the lens of building a program.

“Some of these guys started as walk-ons,” Rhule said of his eight seniors. “Some started with Al Golden, some with Steve Addazio. But they have one thing in common: They sur-vived. They lasted, and just did everything right.”

NCAA. The Owl seniors have been through a lot in their careers, which will likely come to a close this week.

“It’s crazy, looking back on everything, and just how fast it went. I just wish we could have won [Saturday].” Anthony Robey

THANKSGIVING MASSACRE WILL LIVE ON FOREVER

There may never be a more sublime Thanks-giving Day than the one Eagles fans experienced last week. Not only did our favorite football team carve up the Dallas Cowboys like a 25-pound Butterball, they did it in front of 100,000 bump-kins stoked for a holiday celebration.

The best part about last Thursday was what Eagles fans did not have to endure. The surgically altered face of Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was conspicuously absent on the sideline. Dez Bryant never got to dance in the end zone; he was too busy berating his teammates. Even Fox analyst Troy Aikman had to stifle the nauseating testimonials for his old team.

Because we are Eagles fans, our first impulse is to embrace our biggest dreams again. After all, there should be no further questions about which team is going to win the NFC East, nor about Chip Kelly making the playoffs for the sec-ond time in his two sea-

sons here. With a coach who has won 19 of his first 28 games, anything is possible.

But the Thanksgiv-ing massacre should be appreciated simply for just how special it was, regardless of future implications. It was one of the most exhilarat-ing victories in recent memory — even more so than the other recent Cowboy drubbings.

When the Birds crushed Dallas three years ago to win the division — Andy Reid’s last meaning-ful triumph — the Cow-boys were pretenders, as they were last season when the Eagles secured the division title on the final Sunday against a home underdog playing without Tony Romo.

What made Thursday’s national embarrassment for the Cowboys especial-ly sweet was that Dallas is supposed to be resurgent now, with the best offen-sive line in football, the best running back, the best wide receiver and a much-improved defense. Aikman said early in the

game — very early — that this is the best Cowboys team in many years.

And still the Eagles, without their starting quarterback (Nick Foles) and their defensive leader (DeMeco Ryans), demol-ished them. It was a game that will stand alone in memory, like the infa-mous body-bag event in Washington 24 years ago, and the only other Eagles visit to Dallas on Thanks-giving Day, in 1989.

If everything goes according to plan, Chip Kelly will have far bigger victories than the one he masterminded last week in Dallas, but this is one that will always have extra meaning because of the effect the loss had on our most bitter rival.

Has there ever been a more delicious treat for Eagles fans to savor, in one wonderful afternoon, than the bitter reactions of Bryant and Jason Witten as they tasted the most disappointing defeat of their season?

Thank you, Chip Kelly and the 2014 Eagles, for a day we will never forget.

Cataldi’s fi nal thought

“Philadelphia has a basketball team with no wins, a hockey team with no chance and a baseball team with no clue, but we have something truly worthy of our gratitude.”
