monasteries and religious institutions attended for the event.

RIM Zhenphen Tshogpa agreed to volunteer, but only during few days taking into condition their

requirement to engage the whole day and the classes the Tshogpa’s members have. RIM Zhenphen

Tshogpa volunteered for three days on November 5th, 8th and 9th. On November 5th, 18 Trainee members

The event ended with Tshewang, longevity blessing from Rinpochhes.

It was a wonderful opportunity for the Zhenphen Tshogpa volunteers to serve during such a meritorious

religious event and also see high Lamas and receive blessings from them. To them, nothing could have

been as satisfying as being an integral part of the event.

The Day of the Zhenphen Tshogpa

- the theme set against the context of the Tshogpa itself.

The lighting of butter-lamps which kicked off the event with expressed the strong wish of the Tshogpa

to prosper in its commitments towards its vision. The event consisted of progress and financial report

Dear Readers,

At an outset, I must say, I am happy to be the part the Zhenphen Tshogpa

(Association) team, whose existence strives to understand the co-existence

through the simple practice of volunteerism in and outside office. Personally,

it means a lot good thing and energy to reflect on collective good memories.

Foreword from the Chief Advisor

This is the second year Zhenphen Tshogpa is bringing its second annual report to the readers. The

report indicates that spirit of volunteerism, team, dedication and commitment of executive members,

and members from faculty, staff, previous members and outside were well coordinated and organized

for the service to needy ones. This year again, the Association had received selfless executive members,

whose initiative and commitment has put the Tshogpa’s activities in full swing. I and many of my

colleagues at the institute witnessed that the executives and Tshogpa’s members had shown their

natural instinct of spirit in volunteerism. Such character has brought us to celebrate and theme this

year’s ‘Zhenphen Day’ as ‘Spirit of Volunteerism’.

With the publication of report, I hope Zhenphen, which literally would mean to benefit others, has

been successful in providing the ‘services from heart’ whose motto and practice directly symbolize in

achieving its mission and vision. With a notion of beginning charity at home, this year, the Tshogpa

had major voluntary activities rendered in firstly beautifying and sanitizing the Institute’s campus and

cleaning Institute’s river, Olarongchu. Some of the major events are mass blood donation; Labour

Contribution to Jangsa Animal Saving Fund, Dzogsar Rinpoche retreat centre, Paro, and Annual

Ngyingma Moenlam Chenmo, at Memorial Chorten; mass cleaning in Thimphu Thromde (in

collaboration with Municipality) etc. The Tshogpa also contributed in attributing and helping needy

people, patients in hospital with basic necessities. For instance, the Executive of Tshogpa has make the

food contribution for kidney patients in JDWNRH.

I hope, one way or other, we all agree that the values of Tshogpa ‘CLDSTAM’ (Compassion,

Loving Kindness, Discipline, Sacrifice, Truthfulness, Acceptance and Mindfulness) were cherished

in our activities. The Tshogpa also endures in assuring the highest degree of apolitical, transparent,

accountable and responsible existence in all times to come.

Once more, this is truly yet another milestone for Zhephen members to celebrate. Be it within or

beyond Insitute’s Zhenphen Association, I pray and hope that the spirit of volunteerism continue

to grow in each members. I long and hope to look forward for equally if not more dedicated and

committed members for 2015.

May Love Live Long and May its virtue benefit all!

Zhabtok at Dzongsar Khyentse Retreat Center, Paro

Kinley Paydon Dorji

March 15th, 2014: Dzongsar Khyentse Retreat Center in Satsham Chorten, Paro, also known as

Tiger’s Tail Retreat Center, is a three-year retreat center in the pine forests just opposite the mystic

Taktshang Monastery. In order to live up to Zhenphen Tshogpa’s motto of “service from the heart,”

the Tshogpa initiated zhabtok at the Retreat Center on Saturday, March 15th, 2014.

Despite the interest and enthusiasm shown by the members to volunteer at the Retreat Center, the

Tshogpa could only accommodate 30 members due to the constraint in transportation. The team

arrived at Satsam on the bus service provided by the management at 10am where they were warmly

greeted by the caretaker and Rinpoche’s envoy. The team cleaned the site, cleared the ground, and

carried boulders from one location to the other. The team also worked on digging the ground and

leveling of the surrounding area. The work grew fun as the team collaborated with other volunteers

and engaged in sharing experiences and stories. The caretaker and Rinpoche’s envoy were gracious

hosts as they provided the volunteers with tea, refreshments and lunch. The team was also allowed

into the altar room to offer prayers.

After a day’s hard work, the team bid farewell and departed from Paro. Happily exhausted members

expressed the satisfaction and contentment they experienced.

The Chief Advisor of the Zhenphen Tshogpa, during the 4th executive meeting, shared that the

Nyingma Zhitshog sent a letter to the Tshogpa requesting voluntary assistance during the conduct

of Ngajur Dorji Thegpai Moenlam Chenmo which would be held at National Memorial Chorten,

Thimphu, which is located next to the Jigme Dorji Wangchuk National Referral Hospital. It was to

be held from 4th – 13th November, 2014 for ten consecutive days.

Nyingma Zhitshog is a religious foundation that was established under the Religious Act of Bhutan

in December 2012, for peace and harmony in the country.

This Moenlam Chenmo, a longevity prayer for His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo, was organised

by Nyingma Zhitshog at Memorial Chorten to commemorate Fourth Druk Gyalpo’s 60th Birth

Anniversary and also to pay tribute to His Majesty’s selfless service to the Nation.

It was presided over by venerable Nyingma Rinpochhes in Dudjom Yangsey, His Eminence Tenzin

Yeshe Dorje, Khenpo Karpo, Tang Rinpoche, His Eminence Dungzin Garab Rinpoche and

His Eminence Gangtey Tulku. More than 600 monks, nuns and Buddhist practitioners from 186

event. The Thromde even provided refreshments an hour after the commencement of the social work.

Around three hours later, the event came to an end and the Tshogpa, from its finances, served the

volunteers with tea, snacks and water.

The transportation was arranged by the RIM Management.

The event was planned under Thimphu Thromde by collaborating with the Jangling Community

Service Association and RIM Zhenphen Tshogpa. Initially, it was discussed that the event was to

be held along the Babesa Expressway. However, it was later on i.e. on 11th October, 2014 that the

decision was made by the Thimphu Thromde to hold the social work at the main town area.

Towards Actualizing Gross National Happiness Kinley Paydon Dorji

March 20th, 2014: 20th of March is observed as the International Happiness Day globally, and it

was established by the United Nations in 2012, recognizing the relevance of happiness and well-being

as universal goals and aspirations in the lives of human beings. In order to join the international

community in celebrating the day, Zhenphen Tshogpa members engaged in Socially Useful and

Productive Work (SUPW) in RIM. The SUPW consisted of a cleaning campaign around the campus.

The members picked up trash and litter around the campus and along the riverbanks of Ola Rong

Chhu. Although the cleaning campaign lasted for less than an hour, the impact was a cleaner campus

and satisfied members who were inspired by their potentials in making our community a happier place

through small acts of happiness.

The cleaning of Olarongchu:

Kesang Wangchuk

On March 31st, 2014, Realizing that the plastics, paper and bottles along Olarongchu have become

an eyesore for passersby and the people living in the vicinity, the Zhenphen Tshogpa members went

along the banks of the river, collecting trash. In so doing, the Zhenphen Tshogpa was able to recreate

and retain the innate beauty of the environment, thereby, making it a safe haven for aquatic life. The

Tshogpa feels that the consumption habit of people, in general, and the RIM family, in particular, is

responsible for the generation of such massive waste and, therefore, measures like segregation, proper

disposition and management should be implemented, at the individual level, to manage waste.

A stride toward a cleaner and safer environment. It is not only about humans. It is also about fellow

beings, the aquatic lives.

Towards Cleaner and Greener RIM Kinley Paydon Dorji

April 3rd, 2014: RIM Zhenphen Tshogpa,

towards ensuring “Cleaner and Greener”

Royal Institute of Management Campus,

organized an hour long Socially Useful and

Productive Work (SUPW) on Thursday, April

3rd, 2014. The work consisted of picking trash

and wastes along the riverbanks of Ola Rong

Chhu and RIM football field. The Tshogpa

also took the initiative to install tin waste-bins

in and around the RIM campus at strategic

locations in order to ensure proper waste

disposal and management. Following the

previous year’s track, cuboidal tin waste-bins

were made out of milk powder containers

donated by one of Tshogpa’s members. Prior

to pitching the waste-bins, members cleaned

the containers and painted it green, since

the color represents nature and harmony. The waste-bins that are installed around the campus will

be emptied and taken by the city municipality once a week. The easy access to trash bins not only

addresses the problem of littering in the campus, but it also raises environmental awareness among the

residents and the passerby.

Waste picking at Thim-Throm

Jigme Thinley

12th October, 2014: The members of the Zhenphen Tshogpa collected wastes by the highway of

Thimphu main town as volunteers.

The coverage of this social work was from the Bhutan Oil Distribution Oil Station at Lungten Zampa

till Royal Textile Academy building at Chubachu.

After gathering at the Clock Tower at around 9:30am, the members were provided with empty sacks,

face masks, and sterile surgical gloves which were arranged by the Thimphu Thromde. They then

distributed themselves into two groups and started along the two sides of the road from the starting

point.

Every bit of garbage was picked up with sincerity and dignity. It was observed that the drains were

the dirtiest part of the city. There were few spots where cleaning the wastes was impossible due to

deposition of huge amount of sand.

As the volunteers proceeded into the midday, the town became filled with people. Volunteers however

diligently shouldered their responsibility despite inconveniences. Few residents along even came out

and helped the Tshogpa members about their surroundings.

The collected wastes were emptied in a compactor truck assigned by the Thimphu Thromde for the

On 12th October, a group of Zhenphen Tshogpa members contributed volunteer services for two days

for the construction of a prayer hall at Cheri Monastery. In these two days, the members contributed

services in the form of carrying sand and cement from the Dodeyna Bridge up to the monastery,

which is about 4 km uphill. Apart from the members of the Zhenphen Tshogpa, some of the Royal

Body Guards also volunteered to carry sand and cement in one of these two days.

Organizing prayer sessions

Jigme Thinley

The Tshogpa tries to help the community through every angle possible. Of many, one is the spiritual

angle.

The Tshogpa agrees that as a community, a misfortune occurring to one is a misfortune to all, and

it is a collective responsibility to help the unfortunate RIM family member. Further, the Tshogpa

acknowledges that we are very much susceptible to ill fortunes and there, we need to help however

small and stand united however difficult.

There have been many ill fortunes like death and sickness of closed ones in the RIM Family.

Collaborating with the immediate affected RIM family member and the prayer coordinator, the

Tshogpa helped organizing prayers in the RIM prayer hall. The Tshogpa provides necessary items for

the prayer whenever needed. The members involve in preparing butter lamps, arrangements, praying,

etc.

This help that the Tshogpa renders will knit close bond in the RIM Family and build a stronger

harmonious community besides assisting the dead or the sick. It would also work towards preventing

such misfortunes and promoting peace and prosperity in RIM.

The Tshogpa extends its gratitude to the prayer coordinator for his prompt, huge, generous and

unfailing support during those hours of need.

RIM Zhenphen Tshogpa was instituted towards providing true services to the society. Undeniably,

the name itself strongly suggests that it is an association formed by Royal Institute of Management

which is explicitly dedicated towards benefit of others.

The report has that the Tshogpa in the year 2013 served the community from heart in various activities

validated by their contribution in the following capacities.

The Tshogpa had undertaken cleaning of water source and tank to make the water safer and purer

for use. It also had offered zhabtok at Dzongsar Khyentse Retreat Centre, Paro and even at Simtokha

Dzong. The Tshogpa had also helped cleaning the wastes around Jigme Dorji Wangchuck National

Referral Hospital and at Changjiji where possible stakeholders were tried to involve as far as possible.

Waste bins were installed in RIM campus to not fail in maintaining cleanliness at home while the

Tshogpa tried advocating the same outside.

The Tshogpa made its historic stride by drafting the Constitution. It was completed on 12th September,

2013 and was accepted as the guiding principle and framework for the Tshogpa. The making involved

Task Force members and office bearers who extensively deliberation.

The reports were done by the then two reporters for the Tshogpa under supervision of the Chief

Advisor. The publication was somehow delayed from publishing in 2013.

Thus, the publication was taken up by the team of this year’s executives i.e. General Secretary, and

the two reporters. It was published by the Department of Research and Consultancy, RIM. The

copies were made available in the Library.

Hospital (JDWNRH) initiated Blood Donation Drive here at Royal Institute of Management in

PGDPA Classroom that afternoon.

The need for helping the least advantaged and helpless ones has been felt all over the places. The

interventions vary from providing food, shelter and security for vulnerable groups. Inspired by its

motto, “Services from Heart”, the RIM Zhenphen Tshogpa organised Blood Donation Drive.

The Drive was overseen by the Blood Unit team of JDWNRH. 51 donors comprising of Institutes

faculty, support staff and trainees came forward to donate. However, 13 of the potential donors could

not donate because of problems associated with the blood pressure and some undergoing medication.

Donors were extremely satisfied as they could donate their blood that would save the lives of others.

Tashi Tenzin, one of the donors pursuing Post Graduate Diploma in Public Administration, expressed

his gratitude for the Tshogpa for bringing the Hospital team which otherwise trainees find difficult to

allocate time to visit the hospital to donate blood. Ngawang Chezang, a trainee of Department of

Information Management System said, “There is no other thing that we can do to help others than

to donate blood.”

Mr Chonga Zangpo, a Faculty of the Department of Finance and Business, said, “I will donate every

after three months from now on.”

The Blood Unit team expressed their gratitude for the Tshogpa for coordinating the Drive and donors

for donating. Dr. Marukh Getshen, an Incharge of the Blood Bank, requested to explore possibilities

of instituting such collaboration hereafter and be initiated every after three months.

Donors were served with refreshments of fruit juice, candy, milk and Horlicks sponsored by the

Hospital team and Ms Kinley Om, a Faculty of Department of Finance and Business of the Institute.

The Drive stretched over two hours from 14:00 hours to 16: 00 hours.

members, which include Dzongkha, Hindi and English dances and also solo song performances. In

order to attract more audiences, the show also featured popular guest performers—Namgay Jiggs

(one of the most renowned and loved singers in the country), The Babas (a well-known band in

town), and Kezang Dorji (a rapper, singer and a song writer).

Moreover, food stalls were also set up outside the auditorium. The menu comprised of tea and snacks

(alu dam, chana, chilli chop, finger chips and popcorn) prepared by the Tshogpa members.

The first of its kind ever held by the Tshogpa, the show was a major success.

May 28th, 2014: With the objective of striving for “a cleaner and beautiful Bhutan,” on Wednesday,

May 28, 2014, a group of Zhenphen volunteers pitched trash-bins near Tachog Drubchu (Holy

Water) in Paro. The initiative to pitch trash-bins came against the backdrop of plenty of paper,

plastics and bottles being littered in the vicinity of the Drubchu, otherwise a holy and beautiful place.

The Tshogpa also pitched a trash-bin at the entrance of Tachog Lhakhang.

6th July, 2014: A group of four boys went to Dzongsar Khyentse Retreat Centre, Paro to make zhabtok

towards contributing in the construction of the Centre.

The construction of the Centre is making its progress gently due to non-involvement of big contractors.

It is all left to people of the nation for their volunteerism. It is thus conclusive that this decision is

one clever means opened by His Eminence Dzongsar Jamyang Khyentse Rinpochhe, the Lama well

regarded for sharp intellect, for the people to help them out of this mundane samsara by accumulating

huge merit through this volunteerism.

Therefore, there are his followers volunteering anytime possible in the construction. Mrs. Tashi

She came to collect the volunteers and four boys including and coordinated by the General Secretary

of Tshogpa went with her at around quarter past 8:00am.

There were already more than 20 volunteers already in work when they reached the area. Anti-

Corruption Commission Chairperson, Dasho Aum Neten Zam was also there full of joy and energy.

The work was mainly the crushing of few 10 meter squares of an old cemented flooring and carrying

this crushed debris to maintain the parking area. The work also included shifting and gathering of

stones from odd places.

The volunteers were provided with necessities for the work like gloves, sacks and tools. They were

served refreshments and delicious lunch.

The volunteers worked mirthfully that even the hardest job of the day – the crushing of the floor –

turned easy. Sweat, dusts, and huff and puff became everyone’s best company. When evening began

dawning, the works planned for the day were neatly completed.

As the volunteers of Tshogpa as well as others began to bid adieus to the hosts there, they were

sincerely acknowledged for their day’s hard work saying that the work would have been procrastinated

had not there been them volunteering that day.

Past 5:00pm, the volunteers representing the Tshogpa took a last glance at their work and the place

and headed back to RIM. Their aching bodies spelled their dedicated zhabtok and contentment out

of it. They knew that a good rest was the only wish what they sought after.
