GÖRAN EHLMÉIt is true that the industry has a general poor knowledge of technical issues and differences between materials used in diving suits. But I do not blame shopkeepers or divers for this lack of understanding.I am worried about the way this industry is going, Göran says.35 years ago all manufacturing companies were still owned and run by the original owner, the diver. Things were produced by divers for divers. Quality was an important part, you did your things because they were needed and you knew what was needed to get there. Maybe it had not the most innovative design or the coolest look, but it for sure talked the talk and walked the walk.Today the original guys are old and the companies sold out, for the new bean counters pro�t and greed seems to be the guidelines.

Huge OEM producers �ood the market with low cost, low quality wet and drysuits, and the new divers do not have the knowledge to discriminate the �aws. High-End CR neoprene is too expensive to use in the low-end products. They may look alike, but the performance and life span is poor and in my opinion the divers get cheated.Waterproof never went that way, mostly because we still are a �rst generation company. After 30 years as a suit producer we know even more how important it is to keep up the quality and serve our customers with the best we can offer. Waterproof’s main problem is that we have to educate the new dealers and divers about the difference in materials, and we struggle to get the message out there.

A diver does not know the difference between materials, he has little chance to test different suits so he is unaware of the

fact that there is a major difference in performance pending on the materials, so he is likely just to choose the cheap solution. One could argue that the Diveshop should guide the new diver to choose a suit for the type of diving he is going for, but unfortu-nately few shop assistants know enough if anything about the topic, so the customers get “cheated”, maybe not really deliberately, but by stupidity and incompetence among us in the industry.

It is true that the industry has a general poor knowledge of technical issues and differences between materials used in diving suits. But I do not blame shopkeepers or divers for this lack of understanding. It is us, companies like Waterproof, the special-ists, who have to teach the diving society about what quality is, and what quality does. Waterproof’s legacy and pride is at stake. If we fail to educate the divers in what we do best, quality suits, with an appealing designed appearance, Waterproof just gets mixed up with the common commodity stuff out there. It is sad and does not bring anything positive into the dive industry. On the contrary divers who get a bad experience when diving may quit, and we lose another ambassador spreading the gospel of diving.As head of R&D at Waterproof I take the diving and the need from the divers seriously. I always have, and will do my outmost to keep functionality and quality at top level. Facing Reality – it is not only a phrase for me - It is how I live my life.

D6 LITE ISS”When light weight oozes heavy quality”

Waterproof presents a new lighter version of the D7 PRO ISS FrontZip to cater for the divers who want a lighter suit for travelling or more leisure diving tasks.The material is a nylon based, trilaminate, with 150 gr butyl coating and the new Xlite FlexBoot. In addition the new TIZIP dryzipper contributes to lightness and softness. This makes the D6 Light ISS suit smoother and lighter, easier to fold and provides a far more relaxed feeling when in use than any other suit in the category.

Waterproof does not, however, compromise the quality or the detail features that are the core values for Waterproof in general. D9 BREATHABLE

The new D9 Breathable Drysuit is Waterproof’s answer to the growing demand for a light traveler, tropical and snorkeling drysuit. Its extremely light and breathable properties add to the comfort of the user.

The light quad layer fabric with the breathable membrane in combination with ultra-sonic welded socks makes the suit easy to fold and transport. But even with adequate tear, puncture and wear resistance this is a suit desig-ned for more delicate diving. It is not constructed for advanced high tech or wreck diving, for this Waterproof has better suited hard core diving models.

The suit is equipped with integrated suspenders and together with the crotch strap they form a telescope waist. Thanks to this telescope waist construction, the ergonomics of the suit give a feeling of ordinary cloth. It also allows the use by persons of different heights. years. Love surges through my soul when I am with them. I travel the world to swim and work with differ-ent species. Caribbean Reefs are my babies and will always be. It is through food I attract them to me, but it is through touch I convince them to stay.The shark settles quietly in my lap and allows me to touch. My spirit wants to talk to her and let her know how much I care. The gentle breathing of the shark on my lap soothes my soul. It is like holding a child in an embrace you wish would last forever.Parallel to my passion for sharks is my discovery of caves.

Underwater caves, passage ways where time does not tick, daily life troubles do not matter and where the heart does not hurt. Cave diving is like opening a big dusty book over the history of the Earth. The caves speak to me through the wrinkles, folds and pages. My cave light is a brief shadow of light glimpsing into the eternal darkness before it goes back to its quiet state. The cave was, it is, and it will be, with or without me.I have explored many new caves and swam through very known ones.

I spend my time educating, presenting and working to allow more people to understand what precious gift we have on this Planet. Someone could get lost and despair at the immensity of damage we have to face. I try to keep it level by concentrating on the aspects I can in�uence: shark conservation, �shing laws for the Bahamas, water and land conservation through the vital roles of caves, garbage disposal and recycling for our little island. I do believe that one person can make a difference. And I intend to be one of those.

Her head rests on my lap. I can feel her soft under chin on my legs. Slow breathing, in and out, in and out, gentle rest. My stainless steel �ngers on her head, her eyes open, close, open, close, breathing. “I love you”, I think to myself. “Do you love me too?” “Can you feel me, my soul, my love for you?” I love your perfect shape, your liquid shade, your strong body, the way you glide through the water, undisturbed, strong, yet so vulnerable. So feared, so loved all at once, so misunderstood. But I do love you! You are just perfect and I am so far from it. In an instant you are gone, I gaze at you as you leave me. I reach into the tube, trying to lure you back with some food; I wish I could do so with the power of my mind, the strength of my love. Can you feel me? Connected for a few seconds, minutes, no more, I am longing for you to come back, I want to stroke you again, feel you breathing, and feel at peace, at home, where I belong. I was eight years old when I �rst dreamed of swimming with sharks. I had a mix of fear and desire and a deep curiosity for an animal in my eyes so beautiful.It was not until fourteen years later that my dream would become not only a reality, but also my daily work routine. My love for the ocean, for the water, for being submerged dates back to times before my memory and my ability to walk. My mom recalls that to soothe me during crying nights she would have to just submerge me in tepid water and I would relax and smile.

I have been working with sharks for the last nineteen

Cristina started diving in 1994, making the Bahamas her home and diving her life. She manages a team of eighteen instructors and �ve boats, teaches hundred of students at all recreational and technical levels and specializes in Shark Handling course. She is known for inducing a status of “tonic immobility” in sharks through a gentle touch on their nose. She uses this technique to remove hooks, assist scientists and to show a different side of sharks and educate people about the need to protect them. She is a TDI and NSS-CDS Technical and full cave instructor and cave explorer. She is the �rst woman to have explored and connected a land cave with an ocean blue hole. When not diving for work she travels to learn more about sharks, dive in new environments or explore new cave systems. Cristina believes in the power of education and volunteers her time to host foreign students and teach local Bahamian school children as part of sharing her vision. She is a member of the Women Divers Hall of Fame, the Explorers Club, the Ocean Artists Society and a recipient of the Platinum Pro 5000 award.

The demand for a rugged, long lasting rental suit is still there and the W6 SC with its long gusseted zippers in arms and legs makes it the easiest donning and doffing suit on the market. The famous classic Waterproof rental/school suit, now presented in an updated modern design and in the latest available materials. This suit was originally a co-venture design project with a couple of the biggest dive centers and resorts in the Red Sea in the early 2000s. The main issue for the dive centers was to get a suit that could stand up to 4 dives a day with multiple users and still last for several seasons. Replacing suits into the area was difficult due to customs and import regulations. This issue is still in question for most resorts and live on board ventures.

The Waterproof R&D department solved the task and construc-ted a suit with a Zipper-Through-Seal construction that enables a semidry function on legs and arms despite the generous openings the extra-long zippers generate. The front zipper runs all the way down to the right knee and thus features the easiest donning any suit in the market offers.

“I only had time to raise my arm to protect my face as his body slammed into mine. I was shocked, panicked and scrambling to get away. The seal, equally shocked and surprised, was also rushing to get back into the water.”

After hundreds of underwater encounters with leopard seals, I thought I knew them. What I had not realized is that comparing the hunting behavior of leopard seals gorging themselves on 8-pound penguin chicks in the Antarctic Peninsula, with those laboring over to catch 70-pound adult Emperor penguins in the Ross Sea, is like comparing a golden retriever with a lion. I learned this the hard way, when on the third day of an assignment for National Geographic I stood with my friend and guide, Goran Ehlme, next to a series of open holes and ice leads to see where the penguins were entering the water. Soon we spotted a leopard seal poking through a hole in the ice. I felt like I was seeing an old friend and could not wait to join this much-misun-derstood animal in the water. Suddenly and without warning, the seal exploded from the water before I realized what was happening. Even though we were 15 feet from the ice edge, the seal �ew towards me putting his entire 600-pound mass at eye level. I only had time to raise my arm to protect my face as his body slammed into mine. I was shocked, panicked and scrambling to get away. The seal, equally shocked and surprised, was also rushing to get back into the water. It could have easily bitten me, but I saw in its eye, the moment when – in the knick of time, it realized I was not a penguin. Looking up from underneath the ice, I later realized why it had confused me with prey. Through the opaque glassiness of the ice, I could easily distinguish the dark shape of my assistant, standing, 30 feet away from the ice edge, just like the penguins do. I could not only see his silhouette, which looked remarkably like that of an Emperor penguin, I could also hear him moving over the ice. It dawned on me that as the leopard seal patrols the ice holes that Emperor penguins use to enter the water, it looks for shapes on the ice and it listens for sound cues as it awaits to ambush the birds.Emperor Penguins, are the largest and most magni�-cent of all penguins. Not only are they beautiful, their behavior is also fascinating. Most of what we know about them, however, revolves around their extreme parenting behavior, the harsh isolation of their nesting colonies, the arduous trek to-and-from the sea to get food as they take turns caring, �rst for their egg and then for their chick. What little we know about this resilient bird -- from movies like March of the Penguins,

has left many of us yearning to �nd out what happens when the penguins reach the ice edge and enter the frigid waters off Antarctica. I sat on the ice for hours observing how the penguins hesitated before entering the water. When the penguins �rst approach the ice edge, after the arduous march from the colony through the frozen landscape, they stand a good 30 feet from the water’s edge. They know there is a deadly predator waiting to ambush them underneath the ice. Being fully aware of the potential for a leopard seal attack I had no choice but to get into my dry suit and slip into the icy water through a hole in the thinning sea ice. In this small hole, barely larger than an average hotel room, hundreds of penguins raced, executed sharp turns, splashed on the surface and morphed from the awkward lumbering mass we have come to recog-nize on the surface, into one of elegance, grace, power and speed in the crystal clear, frigid water of the Ross Sea. During my �rst immersion, I swam towards a group of penguins, busy bathing and preening themselves on the surface and I immediately became completely disoriented by a world of confusion and bubbles. In a �ash, and without realizing what was happening, all the penguins, who had clearly never seen a human in the water, had darted into the depths of the ocean and had left me �oating alone in the midst of a sea of bubbles; a “smoke screen” so effective, I could barely see my own hands.Being naturally curious and very intelligent, however, it took the penguins only seconds to realize that I posed no danger to them. To my delight, they instantly relaxed and allowed me to remain in the ice hole with them while they went about their never-ending back and forth into the water. Over a period of three weeks, I spent hours watching these amazing “�ightless” birds take �ight as they exploded out of the water in an unforgettable show of power and grace. As remote as this foreboding part of our planet is, the survival of the Emperor penguins is intimately linked, not to the leopard seal, but to human dependence on fossil fuels. As we continue to dump carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, the biggest threat to Emperor penguins is the possible break out of a large ice mass that might block the way between the penguin colony and the ice edge.

Paul Nicklen, a Canadian-born polar specialist and marine biologist, moved to Baf�n Island and spent his childhood among the Inuit people. There he learned the understanding of icy ecosystems and the survival skills that have turned him into one of the most successful photojournalists of our generation. Paul has produced 16 stories for National Geographic on issues related to conservation and natural history many focusing on polar ecosystems and climate change. Despite the personal peril he often faces while working in very remote and harsh environments, Paul seeks to cover meaning-ful stories that can create emotional connections between people and Earth’s marine and polar realms. 1984 THE BEGINNING

The needs of VikingsDiving and Windsurfing were the latest trends and the need for quality repair and alteration to neoprene suits opened up an opportunity for a small repair shop to grow its business. Even though the interest in diving was expanding, the neoprene suits that were available in the small number of dive shops in Sweden seemed to cater to the Southern European climate – definitely not suits equipped to outfit the needs of Vikings. Within no time the business for alterations increased as divers constantly asked for additional features modifications, and now unexpec-tedly colors started to be "en mode". Eventually the alteration shop realized it would be simpler to produce an entire suit with color options that included everything divers were asking for – thus, as the first vendor to offer color options, the idea of a designed Waterproof suit collection was born.

1989 LARGER PRODUCTION

New facility and more employeesThe overcrowded WP shop was abandoned for a new larger premise with additional machinery, new staff was trained and within no time a production line was in place with cutting, gluing and stitching at one end and shipping at the other. Eventually there were 15 people involved in suit production and Waterproof was recognized as a bona fide suit brand.The geographic spread of the Brand started to widen, but still Waterproof thrived mostly on the Scandina-vian marketplace. It would take ten more years before this market picture totally was changed. But still, learning by doing and diving, step by step Waterproof struggled to gain the skills and experience needed for the conquering journey into the world wide Abyss.

1999 HI END QUALITY

First International recognitionThe focus on design and R&D had created a problem as new technical solutions were leaked via the OEM manufacturers to competitors. To eliminate this problem Waterproof decided to exit mainstream production and only focus on high-end quality suits. This forced Waterproof to source a controllable production facility and led to the joint venture between Waterproof and an established factory in mainland China, resulting in the launch of the ZOR collection. During the next 5 years Waterproof became a major player in the European diving market with a new sales office in Germany. During this period Waterproof also gained its first International recognition with the receipt of the 2003 Tauchen award. Since that year Waterproof has topped the list of first place winners as the number one wetsuit brand in Europe.

1994 CRUCIAL DECISIONS

Moving the productionThe change in Global economics and an outgrown production plant in need of investment created some difficult decisions for Waterproof as the local European neoprene vendors faced pressure from new plants in the Far East creating longer transport times on material and less flexibility. The decision to move production to the raw material source and capitalize on the growing amount of OEM manufactu-rers in Taiwan and Thailand liberated the Swedish team from numerous problems associated with production and allowed concentration on R&D and design. The first expedition to Antarctica commenced and development of Drysuits appropriate for extreme conditions was initiated. Even if the Waterproof Brand name by now was internationally recognized, it was still five years yet to go before the formidable world wide breakthrough happened.

2004 SUCCESSFUL COLLECTION

Best selling premium suitsTo celebrate 20-years as a manufacturer Waterproof launched a new collection, named from stars, the Lynx, Aries, Sirius, Draco and Taurus that soon became the best selling premium suits in stores from Russia and Poland to Greece, the UK, Nether-lands, France, and Italy. Although there was still a focus on Central Europe and Germany, over the next 5 years Waterproof expanded to a Sales office in the US with a warehouse in Tampa, Florida and distribu-tors around the globe in such places as Australia and the Philippines. Waterproof also began to focus intensely on accessories resulting in the Crux Gloves and the vented Hydra Hoods that once again changed the industry standard. As a result Water-proof was voted European Number One Brand every year at the Tauchen Award gala in Düsseldorf. A 20 year long struggling journey from being the local suit tailor to a well recognized and respected World Wide Brand name had reached the final destination. Now the future began, the route back was sealed.

2009 SETTING NEW STANDARDS

Gearing up for the futureLooking into the mirror with 25 years experience as a vendor and developer of high-end Diving Suits, Waterproof came to the obvious conclusion – a constructive R&D, a rock solid Business/Marketing Policy in combination with a brutal non compromising Quality set-up is what has made Waterproof a world wide market player. The respect and all the awards comes not from cheap mass production, copy and making me-too's, or following the stream. The history clearly shows that Waterproof has gained success by thorough and skillful investments in the R&D depart-ment. And in the economic devastating times when everybody did nothing, Waterproof did everything. Invested more competence into the area where the best pay-off is, the R&D. The result is evidently. Launching two new wet suit platforms W1 and W2. And a new Drysuit platform, the Hybrid D1 with several patented features. The new silicone seal system and the genially constructed thermo protec-tion will undoubtedly set new standards for the Diving industry. 30 years ago when we started Waterproof we for sure had a plan and a dream. To make new and different looking dive suits. In those days everything was black, we all looked like James Bond and the crooked divers in the movie Thunderball. So when we started to put colors on the Waterproof suits, they really stood out. Suddenly every new diver wanted a colorful suit, and as the going goes with all trends, some suits were way over the edge, but we sold everything we could make. To be able to produce a really colorful suit we needed to add extra panels. And suddenly we found that with the panels you could actually shape the suit and make it fit better. That knowledge and skill to use panels to shape the suit to fit the body is now the most appreciated feature on a Waterproof suit. This is one of many things that makes the difference between a Waterproof suit and other brands.I wish I could say we had a stringent idea or an elegant business plan of where we would go in the future. But we were young and just thrilled we were able to get our new venture started in diving, where our desire and pleasure consumed all our time anyway. If someone had said we one day would have a Waterproof World Wide Map to look at, we probably would not have been able to grasp that idea. During the journey one day however we slowly understood that what we did was different enough to actually matter in the business and our planning

”Waterproof world wide”changed with the reality. Still, you have to be humble, in those days every office had a typewriter and a telex machine (Telex, short for Teleprinter Exchange Service, for you guys too young to have seen one), two very important items in an office 30 years ago – today they are extinct. So no matter how good, or how far in front of your competitors on the telex or typewriter-market you were, you died just because of the technical progress. Fortunately for Waterproof, 30 years later, divers still need really good diving suits.Waterproof World Wide Map did not just happen one day; it has been created by an ongoing interaction between us and the divers out there. We are really pleased with the fact that our ideas of what a good diving suit should be, have been accepted by so many divers in so many different diving environments. Without the feedback and the close interaction within the diving community this would never have been possible. Our motto, “Facing Reality”, and our dedication to quality and innovations has obviously been well received and embraced by the World Wide Diving Community.It is with great pleasure I look ahead and see a prosperous future for Waterproof and our diving friends. New products, new materials and new ideas, what has carried Waterproof so far, will even more so make the Waterproof World Wide Map grow and spread into new territories.
