As an assistant, Torok helped the Eagles to a pair of post-season appearances and worked with all aspects of the program, including serving as the recruiting coordinator, goalkeeper coach and player develop-ment. Under his guidance, Ozarks’ goalkeepers were among the most productive in the American South-west Conference as three of his goalkeepers earned All-Conference honors. TOROK FOCUSES ON THE BUILDING PROCESS Under the direction of new head coach Matt Torok, the University of the Ozarks men’s soccer team willrelyonsixreturningstartersandabevyoffresh-men to keep the program among the American Southwest Conference’s strongest.Torok, whowashiredinAprilafterspendingfiveseasons as the assistant, inherits a program that has qualifiedforpost-seasonplay11timessinceitjoinedthe ASC in 1996, including last season when it went 7-7-5 overall. On paper, the Eagles appear ready for another playoff run, but Torok is focused on the pro-cess of building a successful team rather than wins and losses. “I haven’t talked to the guys about the playoffs,” he said. “I think that they know the ultimate goal and thatistonotonlymaketheplayoffs,buttofinishbet-ter than we did last year. Obviously we want to win, but I am more concerned about the process and what we are doing to be successful.”AmongthesixstartersbackareAll-Conferenceselections Shaun Keane, Travis Leach and Austin Ben-ner. Keane, a senior forward, scored seven goals and had two assists last season. The three-time All-Confer-ence player has 12 career goals to his credit. Leach, a junior defender, provides Ozarks with stellar play in the back line. Leach was also an offensive threat scoring three goals and tallying one assist in 2013. Benner, a junior goalkeeper, led the ASC in saves (90)andrankedsixthingoalsagainstaverage(1.50).Benner,whofinishedwitha7-6-5record,postedfourshutouts. “Travis, Austin and Shaun are the upperclassmen and they need to lead,” said Torok. “I have told them it is their team.” Torok believes his team will need to improve on the defensive end, and has emphasized that during preseason training sessions. Senior Daniel Garcia, ju-nior Tony Ramos and sophomore Luke Byrne will play a big role on improving the team’s defensive efforts. “We have given up too many goals in the past,” he said. “I am an attacker at heart so I love scor-ing goals, but I know when you give up four goals in a game it is really hard to be successful. I think we need to clean that up. We have emphasized de-fending early and worked on our defensive shape. The attacking stuff is coming naturally with some of the talented guys we have.”Torok’sfirstrecruitingclasswasimpressiveashehauled in 13 freshmen, many of whom will see action this season.

“I have asked the freshmen to grow fast and mature faster than normal,” he said. “We have some seniors in the fold, but we are asking a lot out of the freshmen. The question will be how quickly they adapt to the bigger, faster and stronger collegiate game.” Besides Keane, the Eagles have sophomore for-wardThomasMillsandjuniormidfielderMattWeaverwho can score goals. Mills had a sensational fresh-man year netting seven goals, while Weaver added four more in 2013. Additional scoring threats will come from the freshmen class, according to Torok.“Myexpectationswillbetocompeteandgettheguys to be the best they can be,” he said. “I do not want to concern them with wins and losses. I want them to be worried about the process, how to pre-pare and how to work hard. If we do things the right way, success may come. I don’t know what that success will be, but I think if we are trying to be the best we can be each day and improve, then I think we will have some success.”
