This is the 115th season that Tulsa has fielded a football team, and Tulsa has accumulated an overall record of 600-462-27. Tulsa is in its first season as a member of the American Athletic Conference. The American is the sixth conference affiliation for the Tulsa football program, while the previous five include: Oklahoma Collegiate Conference (1914-28), Big Four Conference (1929-32), Missouri Valley Conference (1935-85), Western Athletic Conference (1996-2004) and Conference USA (2005-13). Tulsa was an independent for 12 years, coming between the Missouri Valley and its entrance into the WAC in 1996. In nine years as a C-USA member, Tulsa compiled a 49-23 regular season league record and a 2-2 mark in C-USA Championship Games – Tulsa was 2-1 against UCF in C-USA title games and 0-1 against East Carolina, both now members of the American Athletic Conference. This is the debut game in the American Athletic Conference for both Tulsa and Tulane, as Tulane also moves to the American from Conference USA. Two key players who missed last season return for the Hurricane in 2014 –– 2012 leading receiver Keyarris Garrett suffered a broken leg against Colorado State in the second game of the 2013 season, while safety DeMarco Nelson, who has 239 career tackles, 14 pass break-ups and eight interceptions, missed last year due to academics. Junior Michael Mudoh ranked fourth in the NCAA last year with 133 stops. Tulsa has just one senior on the offensive side of the ball – right tackle Davis Walton – and Walton is in just his third season after transferring from Northeastern Oklahoma A&M. WHAT A DIFFERENCE A YEAR MAKES FOR YOUNG DEFENSE . . . • Whereas a year ago the Tulsa defense had seven new starters in the season opener, this year the Hurricane defense will just have one new face in the starting lineup –– red-shirt freshman linebacker Craig Suits. • Tulsa's defense comes into the 2014 season with 15 players who have combined to total 152 career starts between them.• A year ago, Tulsa entered the season with players who had totaled just 56 career starts, and 34 of those came from linebacker Shawn Jackson, who finished the 2013 campaign as the C-USA Defensive Player of the Year.

OVER THE LAST 11 YEARS . . . • The first three years of 2000’s were lean for the Tulsa football, posting just a 7-28 combined record in 2000, 2001 and 2002.• Since 2003, Tulsa has an 87-56 (.608) overall record.• In 2012, Tulsa made its eighth Bowl game appearance in the past 10 seasons and has a 5-3 Bowl record.• Tulsa won two outright C-USA Championships (2005 and 2012), four C-USA West Division titles (2005, 2007, 2008, 2012) and shared one West crown (2010).

HAWKINS HONORS DAD BY CHANGING TO NUMBER 3 . . . • Senior linebacker Donnell Hawkins approached head coach Bill Blankenship earlier this summer about changing his number from No. 43 to No. 3. • The reason? Luke McNair, Donnell’s father, passed away on June 3, 2014. • According to Donnell, his father had health issues in the spring that led to his death in June. “I felt like some things had to change with me. I just wanted to start off new going into my senior year. The first thing I did was to change my number, then I started building my faith in God. I’m just brand new,” said Hawkins.• Blankenship added, "there’s no question that Donnell has rededicated his life. This is a big deal for Donnell – to honor his father – they were very close. I think for him to go into his senior year and to have a number that he’s going to carry, that he knows will remind him of his dad is going to be a big deal.”

A LOOK AT HOW TULSA’S YOUTH STACKS UP . . . • Coming into fall camp, Tulsa had a total of 73 freshman, red-shirt freshmen or sophomores in the group of 105 players reporting to make up 69.5-percent of the Golden Hurricane roster. • The number, including 45 freshmen and 28 sophomores, ties for the fifth-most underclassmen in the country returning for the 2014 season. • Pittsburgh (81-of-103) leads the nation with 78.6-percent underclassmen, followed by Penn State (72.4), North Carolina State and Wake Forest (70.5) tied for third place with Tulsa and Northern Illinois (69.5) tied for fifth place.
