Trimble Dimensions 2014 Review The 2014 Trimble Dimensions International User conference was a huge success. Over 4,200 professionals from 83 countries gathered in Las Vegas to network with colleagues and discover new developments in technology. The conference focused on technology, transforming business, boosting productivity and savings. Trimble CEO and President Steve Berglund shared how using advanced technology can deliver cost savings of 25- 30% to construction projects, providing a significant gain for the bottom line as well as incorporating efficiency. Trimble has shifted its attention to cover a much wider scope of offerings, focusing on data and customer solutions. As such, the company is expanding into rail, environmental, electric and water utility business segments, offering considerable growth opportunities for the future. On the geospatial front, Vice President Erik Arvesen, explained how Trimble is arming engineers around the world with mountains of information they can use to make smart, informed decisions. The key is making sure the data is accurate, accessible by people who need it and organized in such a way that pulls information from multiple sources to give geospatial professionals a complete picture. 2014 A winner of Duncan-Parnell’s free pass giveaway, Bill Ledbetter of Roudabush, Gale and Associates, said “this was a great opportunity to learn about the latest industry technologies and applications from experts. We connected with many colleagues and are thankful to Duncan-Parnell for the opportunity to attend.” Dimension participants also enjoyed attending sessions presented by Duncan-Parnell’s Dan Bonenfant and Daisy Rettaliata. Dan presented “Modeling in Trimble SketchUp using Trimble RealWorks Data” and “Trimble RealWorks - 7 Non-Modeling tools for the Construction Professional”, while Daisy presented a case study on integrating Trimble Positions into an existing GIS system. The conference offered over 500 educational sessions both on-site and off-site immersive training. Planning is already underway for Dimensions 2016 to be held at the Venetian in Las Vegas. A Customer’s ExperienceDuncan-Parnell (DP) recently interviewed Bob Bonk, LS of Draper Aden Associates (DAA) to talk about their decision to purchase a Trimble TX5. Bob is the Innovator Director of Surveying Services and heads up their special survey projects, such as scanning.

Bob works with Dave Spriggs, PE, Structural Engineering Division Manager, and Lee White, LS, the head of Land Survey & Marketing, and a DAA Vice President. DAA is a full service consulting engineering fi rm with four locations in Virginia, and one in Coats, NC.

DP: Give us a little background on your company and relationship with Duncan-Parnell.

DAA: DAA is a VA based company that provides facilities planning and engineering design. We’ve had a long relationship with Duncan-Parnell through Earth Vector Systems.

DP: What were you looking for?

DAA: A scanning solution.

DP: What were your challenges?

DAA: Cost and equipment capabilities.

DP: What did you purchase and why?

DAA: The Trimble TX5, as recommended by Grant Stickler, our Duncan-Parnell sales representative. We had been renting the TX5 equipment and were fi nally ready to purchase but wanted to wait on release of TX8 for comparison. We couldn’t wait any more and Grant recommended the TX5 for us. Grant knows our company and the challenges we face. Our purchase was out of blind loyalty! We trust Grant’s knowledge, honesty, and our relationship.

DP: Comparison to the competition?

DAA: Grant understands our company and challenges and was able to provide the solution we needed and therefore we had no reason to shop around.

DP: What are you using it for?

DAA: Scan to BIM and surveying work.

DP: What are the product results?

DAA: Great technology that produces ample data and is now the best tool in DAA’s toolbox for many projects.

DP: Does it meet/exceed your expectations?

DAA: Yes, it is easy to use with lots of applications and it is cost-effective.

DP: How has this product increased your business?

DAA: It enabled us to create a new market for DAA by providing new services directly to architects, general and site contractors, and a variety of engineers.

DP: Has this product/service make your project a success?

DAA: Yes, it brought new types of work opportunities and increased profi tability.

DP: How has this product reduced your cost?

DAA: It is increasing profi tability by replacing conventional workfl ows, saving time and money between the fi eld and offi ce.

DP: How has this product minimized your risk?

DAA: It provides us with more information from the fi eld, better documentation, and deliverables that add confi dence.

DP: Would you recommend Duncan-Parnell? Why?

DAA: Defi nitely. The customer care, support, honest relationship, and knowledge make Duncan-Parnell a great partner. They take time to know your business and fi nd the right solution to help in your successes. Duncan-Parnell has been extremely helpful with support especially when dealing directly with the equipment manufacturer.

Tech TipHave your photo name match your feature ID automatically in TerraSyncDid you know you can have your photo name be the same name as the feature ID? Say you collect fi re hydrants and want the photo name to be the same as the hydrant ID. It’s now possible!

• In the Data Dictionary Editor, create your feature point and attributes including the one that will contain the desired photo name (HydrantID in this example).

• Once the attributes are created, edit the feature.

• On the default setting tab, there will be an Image Name Basis dropdown on the bottom. Choose which attribute you want as the photo name.

• When you collect a photo in the fi eld, the fi le name will automatically be the HydrantID with an _A for the fi rst picture, _B for the second picture etc., along with a jpg extension.
