2014 University of Memphis Tiger Scholarship Fund Annual Membership Renewal Guide

Citation preview

At the University of Memphis, the Department of Athletics develops and

coaches student-athletes in 11 different sports and on 18 different teams;

markets University sporting events and liaises with sports media; and

coordinates corporate sponsorships and donation requests — all without

significant University funding. Your donation to the Tiger Scholarship

Fund directly supports and enhances the experience of the more than

400 student-athletes at the University of Memphis.

Our Mission

The mission of the Memphis Athletics Development Office is to generate

funding for student-athlete scholarships and improved facilities, as well

as to provide general support for the University of Memphis Athletics

Department. We accomplish these goals through the Tiger Scholarship Fund,

the True Blue Society, and the M Club, and by cultivating relationships that

encourage private giving by those businesses and individuals who share our

commitment, passion and vision for Tiger Athletics.

GO TIGERS GO!

Dear Tiger Scholarship Fund Donor,

It is hard to believe I am nearing the completion of my second year as the Director of Athletics of this outstanding

institution. The Memphis community has been overwhelmingly welcoming to me and my family, and we are so

proud to call Memphis home. Memphis Athletics has made tremendous progress in building on a proud tradition,

but we have much left to do. I look forward to working with each of you as we continue our journey. There are too

many athletic and academic accomplishments this past year to list them all, but here are a few achievements that

came as a direct result of your support:

• 228 student-athletes earned at least a 3.0 grade point average (1st among C-USA for 2012-13)

• Men’s basketball reached the third round of the NCAA tournament in March 2013

• Seven teams scored a perfect 1000 for Academic Performance Rate (APR)

• Senior football player Tom Hornsey was presented the prestigious Ray Guy Award as the nation’s best

punter and was named First Team All-American

• Our programs posted an overall Graduation Success Rate (GSR) of 84% for 2012-13

• The men’s and women’s tennis teams both qualified for the 2013 NCAA tournament, with the men

reaching the Sweet Sixteen

• Our men’s basketball program was one of 13 teams in the nation to receive an NCAA Public Recognition

Award for having an APR score in the top 10% and participating in the NCAA tournament

Your continued support of our 400+ student-athletes remains a critical component of our student-athletes’

success. TSF donations are about much more than per-seat donation requirements. Many of you give well beyond

your required donation. It is because of such generosity the Tigers are able to compete at the highest levels in the

classroom, on the field of competition and in the community.

Please join me in supporting Tiger Athletics and the Tiger

Scholarship Fund by renewing your donation today. Be sure to return

your enclosed form prior to the May 15 deadline or pay online at

www.memphis.edu/tsf.

If you have further questions, please call us at 901.678.2334 or

email us at [email protected]. Thank you for

your continued support of Tiger student-athletes and the Tiger

Scholarship Fund.

Go Tigers!

Sincerely,

Tom Bowen

Enhancing Our Facilities, Improving Our Teams

In 2013, University of Memphis Interim President Brad Martin announced a $40 million capital

campaign aimed at improving athletic facilities on the Park Avenue Campus. The ongoing campaign

has already secured more than 25% of the needed funds, bolstered by a $10 million contribution

from Bill and Nancy Laurie — the largest donation in the history of the Athletic Department —

and a $250,000 contribution from the Tigers’ Men’s Basketball Coach, Josh Pastner.

Many of our athletic programs will be greatly impacted

by the planned facility improvements. Tiger football,

for instance, stands at a transformative moment. Across

the country, football is increasingly the foundation for

a successful university athletics program, and though

we’ve recently made great improvements to our football

program, Murphy Athletic Complex lacks the basic

training facilities and infrastructure that separate the

nation’s good football programs from the truly great ones.

To remain competitive in football recruitment, and thus

continue building a successful program,

we must invest in our facilities.

Similarly, our men’s basketball program competes at the

highest level of collegiate ball and is recognized as one of

the nation’s elite programs. However, we cannot simply

stay the course; we must continue to improve. We already

play our home games at FedExForum®, the nation’s finest

arena, but we hope to develop the nation’s finest practice

facility, keeping us well ahead of the competition.

In addition to football and men’s basketball, this

monumental capital campaign will benefit student-

athletes who play baseball, softball, men’s and women’s

soccer, and men’s and women’s track and field.
