With a spot in the Sweet Sixteen on the line, Alabama fell short of a victory in the NCAA Tournament Second Round, as the win-ningest season in Crimson Tide history ended in a 3-0 loss to No. 6 Florida State on Dec. 5. Alabama (26-8) set many milestones dur-ing the 2014 season, including the most wins in school history, the first NCAA Tournament victory and two home attendance records. Individually, Wilson finished the season with 1,529 assists, setting a new single-season school record as the only player in school history with over 1,500 assists in a single season. In the Razorbacks’ win at Tennessee, Hays recorded the 500th kill of the season to become just the eighth player in program history to reach that figure in a single season. The Wildcats (27-5) withstood a gritty effort by the Golden Grizzlies (22-10) to win a back-and-forth match that featured 31 ties and 16 lead changes in the first two sets. Four-teen kills by senior Lauren O’Conner and 22 digs by fellow senior Jackie Napper, both match-highs, helped UK halt OU’s 10 match winning streak. Six different players earned at least a kill on the night, with four having at least eight. Katie Lindelow finished with nine and hit .381, while Cati Leak had eight on a .368 average. Five different players had at least seven digs on the night including Lindelow, Leak and Malorie Pardo, who also served up 32 of the team’s 39 assists on the night. With a berth in the Sweet Sixteen at stake, LSU fought valiantly and

pushed 10th-seeded Oregon to its limit on its home court inside Matthew Knight Arena, but the Ducks proved to be too much for the Tigers in the end in a four-set, 25-22-21-25, 25-20, 25-20 loss Dec. 5 to end the team’s season in the second round. Team Notesmat … McRoberts has posted 16 seasons of 20 or more wins in his 18 years of coaching.

Mississippi State: In the final week of the season, the Mississippi State volleyball Bulldogs (7-26, 2-16 SEC) closed out play drop-ping a pair of matches. MSU faced Texas A&M on Wednesday in its home finale and traveled to Auburn on Saturday to close out the year, dropping both matches. Despite the losses, the Bulldogs have several impressive individual performances from the season. Payton Harris capped her stellar rookie campaign by being named to the All-SEC Freshman Team after finishing the season tops in both total digs and digs per set in the SEC, ending the season with 735 digs and 6.13 per set. Harris’ 735 finish the most in school history and five short of tying the SEC single-season record. Har-ris is also the first player in school history and only the second in SEC history to eclipse the 700 mark in a season. Led by Har-ris, MSU finished first in the SEC in total digs (1,913) and digs per set (15.94). Harris was also impressive at the service line, earn-ing 0.27 aces per set for 11th in the SEC. Also standing out was Bali Leffall-Young, who capped her sophomore year 19th in hitting percentage (.281) and 19th in blocks (0.80). Alex Warren finished 2014 ranked 15th in the SEC in kills (2.79), while Shelby Anderton tallied a 6.31 assists per set average for 11th in the conference.

Missouri: Mizzou closed its season with a 3-2 (27-25, 25-23, 21-25, 21-25, 12-15) loss to Alabama on Wednesday, Nov. 26 at the Hearnes Center. The Tigers were led by sophomore Carly Kan, who tallied her 19th double-double of the season, matching the school record for double-doubles in a season during the 25-point set era. She finished with 18 kills on .340 hitting with a career-high 24 digs in the loss. The loss wraps up the storied careers of seniors Whitney Little, Sarah Meister and Emily Wilson, who finish with a four-year record of 91-43.

South Carolina: The Gamecocks went 0-2 on the week, losing in three sets at No. 6 Florida and dropping a four-set decision to wrap up the season on Saturday against LSU. Carolina finishes the year at 17-14 overall and 7-11 in the SEC. The Gamecocks finished the year with a winning record for just the third time since go-ing 22-7 in 2002. The seven conference wins are Carolina’s most under head coach Scott Swanson and the most since going 12-8 in 2008. Senior libero Mikaela Christiaansen recorded 16 digs against LSU to give her 535 for the season, which is the most in a single season in school history. She also finished her career with a digs per set average of 3.99, which ranks second in school history. Junior middle blocker Darian Dozier wrapped up the year with 141 total blocks and 127 block assists, which are both the most in a single season in the rally scoring era in school history.

Tennessee: Tennessee brought the 2014 season to a close with a 3-0 loss at Alabama on Nov. 29. The defeat finalized UT’s record at 8-23 overall and 1-17 in SEC play. It was the second consecutive season that the Lady Vols recorded only a single win in conference action and it was the second straight year UT missed the NCAA Tournament after appearing in each of the previous five. In their final match of the year, the Lady Vols got a team-high seven kills from freshmen Kanisha Jimenez and Kendra Turner. Sophomore Ashley Mariani had six kills while Shealyn Kolosky, the lone senior on the squad, had five kills and four total blocks. Kolosky, a four-year player, ends her career on Rocky Top with 518 career kills and 227 career blocks. Having finished with a share of the team lead in kills, Turner closes out the season having led or tied for the team lead in kills on ten occasions this season. That number ties her with sophomore Jamie Lea, who also led the team 10 times. Turner finishes atop the team rankings in both total kills and kills per set, posting 222 kills at a 2.67 k/s clip during her rookie stint. Meanwhile, fellow freshman Jimenez concludes the year inside the top three in the team rankings in five major statistical catego-ries: kills per set (1.85; 3rd), total aces (17; T-1st), total blocks (68; 3rd), total assists (21; 3rd), and total digs (260; 2nd). Junior set-ter Lexi Dempsey finished the season with 819 assists, giving her 1,795 through two seasons on Rocky Top. She is currently ranked ninth on UT’s career assist list and will enter her senior campaign only 63 short of moving into the eighth-place spot. Dempsey also led Tennessee in double-doubles for the second consecutive sea-son, posting six after finishing with 17 in 2013. All six freshmen on the roster saw action in 2014, with five logging 80 or more sets, and of the 13 Lady Vols to play more than 50 sets, only two were upperclassmen.

Texas A&M: Texas A&M was unable to overcome a strong serv-ing and defensive effort by 22nd-ranked Arizona State and a 24-kill night by Macey Gardner as the youthful Aggies fell to the Sun Devils, 22-25, 25-20, 25-16, 25-22 in the first round of the NCAA Division I Volleyball Championship Dec. 4 at Gregory Gym. The Aggies, who saw their season come to a close at 21-9, return all but one player off this year’s roster in 2015. Jazzmin Babers, a red-shirt sophomore middle blocker, led the Aggies with 13 kills and a match-high eight blocks as A&M outblocked the Sun Devils, 14-9. Freshman opposite hitter Ashlie Reasor added 11 kills while hit-ting a team-high .318. Junior middle blocker Shelby Sullivan also reached double-digit kills with 10, while freshman setter Stepha-nie Aiple dished out 38 assists. Freshman libero Amy Nettles led A&M in digs with 13, and sophomore outside hitter Emily Hard-esty scooped up 11.
