    JUNIOR FARMERS CHALLENGE Much like the Young Farmers Challenge this year the show has put together a challenge for the under 18 age group.     Merinos & British breeds are back After a long break from the show this year the sheep section welcomes back the addition of the Merinos and British breed. See Page 11 for more information

    Farmers Challenge for the Kids With the success of the Young Farmers Challenge for the Adults. This year we welcome a competition for children 10 to 17 years of age.     State Semi Final Competition A State Semi Final in the Rich Fruit Cake Competition will be held at the Parndana show this year. The winner will be eligible to enter into the State Final Competition at the Royal Adelaide Show in 2015. See Page 22 for more information

    As President I welcome everybody to the Parndana Agricultural, Horticultural and Floricultural Show for 2014.

    I am very honoured to be elected President for my fourth year and it is my pleasure to invite you all to attend this years show. The theme for the 55th Annual Parndana Show is from the Farm to the Store and it is the societys aim this year to have a set focus on what Kangaroo Island is most renowned for and that is the wonderful produce. With the main focal point showcasing how all of Kangaroo Islands products get from the farm where they are produced to the store where they are sold.

    This year, to work with the theme, the show is having a set focus on the wool industry. Working across several sections at the show starting with that Sheep and ending with the Quilting and Needlework the show will follow the path of how wool gets from the sheeps back to the store where we buy wool based products. Along with this the society has invested extra prize money into the wool section with the support of generous sponsorship from Dalgety Wool, Mitre 10 and Elders.

    This year there are also additional prizes and prize money up for grabs in the sheep, lamb, big lamb, cereals and fodder, cookery & preserves, fruit and vegetables, honey products and the pigeons and poultry competitions. More information can be found in the book.

    After the success of the Young Farmers Challenge, this year we welcome the addition of the Junior Farmers Challenge. This competition will run in a similar way to the normal farmers challenge, but with a few modifications that will allow those under the age of 18 to compete. So kids get your team together for the Junior Farmers Challenge, there is a great cash prize for the winning team. See inside the book for more information.

    I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all committee members for all that they have done in helping to bring this show to life. It takes an incredible amount of work to bring together a show even if it is a small one like Parndana.

    Also I would like to thank all sponsors of the show for this year. Without them this show would have been incredibly hard to put together. So thank you and I hope that all people who attend our show will support the people who supported us.

    I encourage you all to participate in the show in some way, whether it is by voluntering, by having a stall, entering exhibits or just attending and having a good time.

    The show society will hold entry days at the show pavilion in Parndana on Friday October 31st between 11am and 1pm and Sunday November 2nd between 10am and 12pm.

    If unable to attend an entry day, you can be post entries to the secretary Beth Bald P.O Box 62, Parndana 5220 Postal entries to be on official entry forms if possible, each person to have separate forms include name and address. Childrens entry forms to have parents name also and must be available for collection on Monday November 3rd.

    Phone entries are acceptable in most sections. See section pages for convenor contact information.

    Some sections take entries on show day if placed before 9am and staged before pavilion closes for judging at 9.30am.

    Late entries will not be accepted.

    No exhibits to be removed before 4pm.

    The committee do not hold themselves responsible for loss or damage to any exhibit.

    Exhibits not claimed within 28 days will become the property of the Society.

    #1 TRADE AND STALL SITES Will be charged at a rate of a single covered site $40, a double covered site $80, a single uncovered site $30 and a double uncovered site $60. Power is $5, Tables $5. The sales of pop guns and cap guns is prohibited at the Show and any found will be confiscated. Contravening of this rule brings automatic disqualification of stall holder at future Shows.

    #2 MEMBERSHIPS Full Membership $12 two tickets, Associate Members pay $6 for one ticket, Aged pensioners $5 a double, $3 a single and free admittance for children under 16. All members have free entries and voting rights. Membership must be paid prior to Show Day.

    #3 GENERAL ADMITTANCE Show day gate prices adults $8, aged pensioners $4 and children under 16 are free

    #4 ENTRIES AND EXHIBITS Entries can be posted to the secretary or taken to the pavilion on Friday October 31st between 11am and 1pm and Sunday November 2nd between 10am and 12pm. Postal entries to be on official entry forms if possible, each person to have separate forms include name and address. Childrens entry forms to have parents name also and must be available for collection on Friday November 2nd. Phone entries are acceptable in some sections. All entries must be bona fide property of the exhibitor. All exhibitors must place their entries in the space directed by the committee by 9:30am. Late entries will not be accepted. No exhibits to be removed before 4pm. The committee do not hold themselves responsible for loss or damage to any exhibit. Exhibits not claimed within 28 days will become the property of the Society.

    #5 PAVILION AND JUDGING The public are not permitted in the pavilion while judging is in progress. Judging is to start at 9:45am sharp. No exhibitors may approach the judges whilst they are judging. The judges decisions are final. Judges have the power to withhold any prize if they consider exhibits of insufficient merit. The committee members are the sole interpreters of these regulations and their rulings in any dispute are final. No prize money will be given out in any class where a trophy or ribbon is given. Trophies not won outright will be held by the Society until such time as they are won outright.

    the removal of diseased or infected sheep from the showgrounds 2. Rams of Polwarth and British Breeds must be registered with their

    flock, unless otherwise stated 4. No sheep may be entered in more than one class, other than

    Championships 5. Should a judge consider a sheep has been entered in a wrong class,

    he/she may shift the entry to the appropriate class and alter the Stewards book accordingly

    6. For judging of championships, all first prize winning pens of two or three are eligible

    7. Stewards have the power to disqualify from autumn shorn classes any sheep not deemed to be autumn shorn

    8. All entries to be in pens by 9 am 9. Competitors must hold own sheep, or make arrangements to provide

    THE BIG LAMB COMPETITION This section is for the largest weight lamb of any breed. A single lamb will be judged on its weight only, not the most perfect marketing lamb. There will be no judging on;

    1. Formation, Fat cover or pelt. 2. It must still have lambs teeth and Lambs wool.

    The lamb will stay at the show with the profits being donated to the Parndana Show Society and to the CFS. The Lambs will be trucked directly to TFI Murray Bridge.

    Prizes: 1st $500 2nd $100 3rd $50

    For this competition a single pen will be provided for all lambs to be placed in for a weigh off to occur on show day.

    5. Combs of own preference will be acceptable as started in the Shearing Industry Award

    6. Competitors will be awarded the maximum points for completing their allotted sheep within the minimum time, to be decided by the judges prior to the competition and after the inspection of the sheep. Points for speed will be deducted at a rate of one point per second from competitors who take longer then the agreed minimum time. No extra points will be awarded to those shearing faster than the agreed minimum time. The emphasis of this competition is on quality shearing rather than speed

    7. Score cards must be checked by each competitor, and any mistakes must be reported within fifteen minutes after completion of heats

    8. Shearers will be required to supply their own hand piece with a worn drive

    9. Finalists are required to be in neat casual dress for presentation of prizes

    10. Participants do so at their own risk

    RICH FRUIT CAKE RECIPE

    Note: recipe to be used cake not to be iced Fruit should be cut to the size of currants

    Ingredients

    250g butter 250g dark brown sugar 6 eggs 250g sultanas 250g raisins 250g currants 100g dates 60g mixed peel

    60g chopped red glace cherries 60g chopped almonds 375g plain flour 1tsp baking powder 1tsp mixed spice 200mL sherry or brandy

    Method 1. Mix together all fruits and soak in sherry or brandy

    overnight. 2. Sift together flour, baking powder and spices. 3. Cream butter and sugar. 4. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each

    addition. 5. Add alternatively the fruit and flour. 6. Add the chopped almonds and mix thoroughly 7. Place mixture into a prepared tin 19-22cm in size 8. Bake in a slow oven for approximately 3-3 hours

    INGREDIENTS 1 cups of clear honey 190g margarine 1 beaten egg 2 cups plain flour 2 tsps baking powder tsp carb soda 1 tsp Cinnamon 1 cups rolled oats cup of raisins 2 tblspn hot water

    METHOD Set oven at 190 oC in a large bowl blend honey and margarine. Beat egg and add to honey mixture. Add flour and dry ingredients to the mixture. Add rolled oats, raisins and water. Mix well. Drop teaspoonful on a greased tray. Bake for 15 minutes.

    RULES 1. Pens will be provided, except for turkeys and geese exhibit. Exhibitors need to provide cages. 2. Exhibitors must provide food and water for birds on the day in suitable containers. 3. Birds must be disease and vermin free or they will be automatically disqualified and must be removed from the show. 4. Birds must be quietened prior to the Show, any bird that cannot be handled will not be accepted for judging 5. Judges may change a bird to the appropriate class if it has been wrongly entered. 6. Juniors to be under the age of 16 years on 31 December in the showing year. 7. All entries to be in place by 10 am Show Day, Judging will commence at 10.30am.

    Note * Lice are a re-occurring problem that can be easily removed either by dusting, dipping or spraying the birds with an insecticidal preparation suitable for poultry If scaly legs is attended to immediately, by spraying or dipping legs in oil, birds will respond.
