DESCRIPTION
National History Day in Korea - Program 2014
Citation preview
It is a great honor and privilege that Seoul International School is once again hosting the National History Day. On behalf of the faculty and staff who worked tirelessly towards a successful event, I would like to welcome you all to NHD 2014!
This year’s NHD theme, Rights and Responsibilities in History, is especially significant for future historians and citizens of the world that are our participating students. Like the scale of Lady Justice, symbolizing fairness and equality in yielding a just law, rights and responsibilities must go hand in hand. When you have power, you must be humble and be on the side of the powerless. Those who reach for power must learn that power must be accompanied by responsibility, and that responsibility often requires personal sacrifices. I hope that as participants of NHD 2014, you who are our future leaders will consider the ramifications of our actions and what that means in a broader historical context.
My deep appreciation goes to both our fearless organizers and enthusiastic participants. I wish you best of luck and look forward to meeting you all in person!
Dr. Hyung Shik KimHeadmaster & ChairmanSeoul International School
On behalf of Seoul International School and our Headmaster, Dr. Kim welcome to National History Day. This is third consecutive year Seoul International School has hosted National History Day in Korea. The theme this year is “Rights and Responsibilities” and it’s hard to imagine a more appropriate theme for emerging adults to engage with.
National History Day in Korea was primarily the vision of two SIS staff members, Tony and Shanna Hurt. Tony and Shanna will be leaving us this year but their legacy will live on the many community service projects they have spearheaded, including this event.Participating in National History Day takes courage, initiative and stamina. It’s work done purely for the love of learning and I believe that it will be one of the most rewarding activities you will engage in this year.Thank you students for the thoughtful, engaging and inspiring original works you’ve created, to our judges for their wisdom and insight and to our supportive staff for helping to make the day such a great success. Have a great National History Day.
Peter Corcoran Director of Schools Seoul International School
WELCOME
Suzanne Crowder Han
Suzanne Han’s love of Korea began over 30 years ago when, after graduating from the University of South Carolina, she moved to Korea as a U.S. Peace Corps volunteer in Chungju. Since that time she has taught at several Korean universities, including Yonsei University, Chung-Ang University, and Hankuk University of Foreign Studies.
An accomplished author, Suzanne has written many books and articles on Korean customs and traditions. Her stories based on Korean folk tales are included in a number of anthologies and children’s reading textbooks in North America.
Suzanne is currently the Resident Director of the CIEE Study Center in Seoul (CIEE: Council on International Educational Exchange www.ciee.org). In addition, she is Vice President of Friends of Korea (an organization founded by former Peace Corps volunteers to enhance cultural awareness and friendship between Americans and Koreans), and Vice President of the Royal Asiatic Society – Korea Branch.
