HEAD COACH22nd SEASONNEW HAVEN ’91

ROBIN SALTERS

A former setter for the Chargers and a 1991 graduate of the University, Robin Salters continues to uphold the proud winning tradition of New Haven volleyball started by her former head coach and program founder, Deborah Chin. Since taking the helm in 1994 as only the second head coach in program history, Salters has

posted a 586-163 record and .782 winning percentage.

Salters’ 586 victories following the 2014 season is the most ever in school history as she passed former coach and current Director of Athletics Debbie Chin as the all-time winningest coach. Her 586 career victoryes rank her 26th all-time in Division II coaching wins and 11th among active coaches. Her success is even more outstanding in terms of winning percentage, where her .782 mark against Division II competition is 11th all-time among coaches with 10 or more years at the Division II level.

Salters continued to lead the New Haven women’s volleyball program to national prominence in 2014 as the Chargers advanced to the NCAA Elite 8 for the ninth time under her leadership and the 13th time in the history of the program. After leading the Chargers to a 24-9 overall record and an upset of Bridgeport in the NCAA East Regionalfinals,SalterswasnamedtheAmericanVolleyballCoachesAssociation(AVCA) East Region Coach of the Year for the seventh time in her career (1996, 1996, 2002, 2006, 2008, 2012, 2015).

Individually, Salters guided setter Kaulana Ane to AVCA All-America Honorable Meniotion honors, while Ane was joined by Kristen Lee and Kristy Atufunwa on the AVCA All-East Region First Team. In addition to those honors, four Chargers were named to the NCAA East Region All-Championship team; Ane, Lee, Atufunwa and Kea-marie Olaso, with the same four also earning All-Northeast 10 laurels.

In 2013 the Chargers won their second consecutive Northeast-10 Championship and fourth in six seasons as a member of the conference. The Chargers also completed their sixth-straight unbeaten trip through the NE-10, increasing their all-time mark to 88-0 in regular season conference play. The 2013 club made its eighth consecutive NCAA Championship appearance and the 18th in Salters’ 20-year tenure, reaching its third straight NCAA Division II East Region Championship Match.

Individually, Salters mentored Amber Cannady to an outstanding senior season that included Daktronics First Team All-America and AVCA Honorable Mention All-America selections. Cannady was also lauded individually as Daktronics East Region Player of the Year, AVCA All-East Region, Northeast-10 Player of the Year, First Team All-Northeast-10, Most Outstanding Player of the Northeast-10 Championship and a member of the NCAA East Region All-Championship Team.

The 2012 campaign saw the Chargers advance to their 12th NCAA Elite Eight, as Salters was recognized by her peers as the AVCA East Region Coach of the Year for the sixth time in her career. Led by All-America honorees Keidy Candelaria and AmberCannady, the2012Chargersfinishedat30-2,winning theNortheast-10and NCAA East Region Championships with the best record in all of NCAA Division II. Candelaria was named the NE-10 Player of the Year for the second consecutive season and was joined by Cannady on the conference’s First Team. Kaulana Ane and Kristen Lee also garnered NE-10 major awards as Setter and Rookie of the Year, respectively.

Fueled by the Chargers’ 23-7 record, Salters eclipsed the 500-win plateau in 2011. In2010, she earnedher firstNortheast-10 Conference Coach of the Year honor, after leading the Chargers to their third-straight undefeated conference season. She was previously named the East Coast Conference Coach of the Year in 2006 and collected New England Collegiate Conference Coach of the Year accolades in 1994, 1995 and 1999.

While earning her Master’s degree at Western Michigan University, she also coached the Kalamazoo Central High School freshman team.

A former student-athlete at Lake Michigan College where she earned an associate of arts degree, Salters transferred to UNH in 1989 and was the starting setter in 1989 and 1990. In addition to the Charger Invitational, New Haven will make ap-pearances in the Bentley Invitational and the AIC Yellow Jacket Invitational. Breaking up tournament play will be a single home match against Bridgeport, a rematch of the 2014 NCAA East Re-gional Championship won by the Chargers in four sets.

Included in the Chargers 30 matches are 14 Northeast-10 Confer-ence match-ups, with a pair of road dates against Franklin Pierce (Sept. 26) and Southern Connecticut State (Sept. 29) set to open the conference slate. The Chargers, who were picked as the pre-season favorite to win the NE-10, are searching for their eighth regular season conference title in as many seasons in the league.

ALL-TIME ROSTER

EXPECTATION OF EXCELLENCEThe University of New Haven boasts one of the all-time best Division II women’s volleyball programs in the nation. Since joining the NCAA in 1982, UNH has appeared in the NCAA Tournament 29 times in 33 seasons. That string includes 21 appearances in the Sweet Sixteen and 13 berths to the Elite Eight. Overall in 39 sea-

sons, the Chargers have posted a record of 1,162-342 - a winning percentage of .773.

Two outstanding women are responsible for guiding the program to these astounding heights, recruiting top student-athletes and coaching against the best the country had to offer. The résumé of current head coach Robin Salters is highlighted on page 4.

Deborah Chin, who is currently the Associate Vice President, Director of Athletics at UNH, is the pro-gram’s founder and was the Chargers’ head coach for the first 19 seasons. During that time, shefashioned herself a Hall of Fame career - literally. Chin was a member of the fourth class to enter the AVCA Hall of Fame, the sport’s highest honor, in December of 2006.

She posted a record of 576-178 (.764) as coach and at the time of her retirement her winning percentage wasrankedamongthetopfiveall-time.SheledtheChargers to 10 NCAA Division II tournaments (and three AIAW tournaments), and New Haven was rankedinthetopfivefourtimes.Chin’steamswon30 or more matches 12 times, including six straight years. Six times she was named Northeast Region Coach of the Year, and eight times she was named New England College Conference Coach of the Year. In10ofherfinal11seasons,ChinledtheChargersto at least the Sweet Sixteen, including four trips to the Elite Eight.

Steven H. Kaplan, Ph.D., University PresidentSince becoming president of the University of New Haven in 2004, Steven H. Kaplan, Ph.D. has led the University of New Haven through a period of remarkable growth and development. In the past seven years alone, enrollment has grown by 42 percent to more than 6,400 undergraduate and graduate students, who

hail from 35 states and some 45 countries. Full-time undergraduate enrollment has grown by 86 percent and applications have increased by 176 percent. During this time, the University has completed over $110 million in construction projects and has launched 17 new academic programs.

UNH now ranks among the top comprehensive universities in the North and boasts nationally ranked programs in a number of majors across business, criminal justice, engineering, forensic science, and the liberal arts and sciences. In recognition of his contributions to transforming the University, Dr. Kaplan was named “Businessman of the Year” by Business New Haven magazine in 2008.

President Kaplan also was awarded the 2011 William M. Burke Presidential Award for Experiential Education by the National Society for Experiential Education. The award recognizes President Kaplan’s efforts to make UNH a national leader in experiential education, requiring every undergraduate student to complete an internship, an academic service learning experience, international study or a faculty-mentored research project before graduation.

Previously, Dr. Kaplan was chancellor and professor of English at the University of Virginia’s College at Wise, the only four-year branch campus of the University of Virginia and one of the nation’s best public colleges, according to U. S. News & World Report.

Dr. Kaplan began his teaching career in 1982 as an Instructor of English at the University of Maryland, European Division. From 1985-1989, he served as Visiting Lecturer in American Studies at Eberhard-Karls Universität, Tübingen, Germany – one of the oldest and most highly regarded universities in Europe. After completing his doctoral studies at Eberhard-Karls Universität, he returned to the U.S. to teach English at the University of Southern Colorado. Within three years, he was made department chair, serving in that capacity for two years before becoming Director of the Center for International Studies.

Dr. Kaplan also served as dean of Arts and Humanities at SUNY College at Buffalo and as Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Butler University.

In addition to earning his Ph.D. in Comparative Literature at Eberhard-Karls Universität, Dr. Kaplan holds a Master of Arts degree (with a concentration in philosophy, German and English) from Eberhard-Karls Universität and a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California at Los Angeles.

Dr. Kaplan is the author of a book on American translations of the poetry of Rainer Maria Rilke; a book onTimO’Brien’sfiction, publishedbytheUniversityofSouth Carolina Press; and an anthology of international war stories, published by the University Press of Colorado.

He also has written a number of scholarly essays.

They share a great love for the visual and performing arts and have traveled to more than 30 countries during their 35 years together, including Tanzania, where they hiked up Mt. Kilimanjaro. They have a son and three daughters.

Dr. Kaplan grew up in Chicago, the son of a shoe store owner and an actress-comedienne. He said his stepfather, Irving Glovin, taught him to love ideas and appreciate the contributions we all need to make to good causes. Irv Glovin was a good friend of Oskar Schindler, was instrumental in getting the story out in book and filmform(hewasassociateproducerof thefilm),andis President of the Oskar Schindler Humanitarian Foundation. Dr. Kaplan also serves on the board of the Foundation.

Deborah Chin became the University of New Haven’s fourth Director of Athletics in 1993, and currently oversees a department which sponsors 16 NCAA Division II varsity sports. She was elected to the prestigious position of Chair of the NCAA’s Division II Management Council for 2008 and currently serves as Chair of the NCAA Division II Membership

Committee. She was promoted to Associate Vice President, Director of Athletics and Recreation in 2010. UNH Athletics has enjoyed a high level of success across the board during Chin’s tenure as Director of Athletics, advancing to NCAA tournament over 75 times in 20-plus years. UNH has recently made a number of capital improvements to athletic and recreational facilities, including the construction of the multi-million dollar David A. Beckerman Student Recreation Center, a $1.3 million synthetic turf renovation of Kayo Field (soccer and lacrosse), as well as installation of state-of-the-art blue and gold synthetic turf at the new Ralph F. The Northeast-10 Conference is an NCAA Division II conference that was established in 1979. The conference consists of 15 member institutions located throughout the Northeast in the states of Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York and Vermont. With the addition of women’s golf in 2014-15, the NE-10 now sponsors a total of 24 sports.

The institutions that make up the Northeast-10 are Adelphi University (Garden City, N.Y.), American International College (Springfield, Mass.), Assumption College (Worcester, Mass.), Bentley University (Waltham, Mass.), Franklin Pierce University (Rindge, N.H.), Le Moyne College (Syracuse, N.Y.), Merrimack College (North Andover, Mass.), University of New Haven (West Haven, Conn.), Pace University (Pleasantville, N.Y.), Saint Anselm College (Manchester, N.H.), Saint Michael’s College (Colchester, Vt.), The College of Saint Rose (Albany, N.Y.), Southern Connecticut State University (New Haven, Conn.), Southern New Hampshire University (Manchester, N.H.), and Stonehill College (Easton, Mass.).

The conference’s 15 member institutions are spread geographically from Syracuse, N.Y. to Waltham, Mass. and from Colchester, Vt. to Garden City, N.Y. Many of the members are located in or around the metropolitan areas of Albany, Boston, Manchester, New Haven, Worcester and New York City. The Northeast-10 was proud to welcome the New Haven and Adelphi in the conference’s latest expansion, adding to the powerful union of strong academic and athletic institutions. In addition, LIU Post (Brookville, N.Y.) is an associate member of the NE-10 in the sportsoffieldhockeyandfootball.

The Northeast-10 has evolved into a membership committed to competitive athletics programs that emphasizetheeducation, bothonandoffthefield,of more than 6,000 student-athletes. Among the many accomplishments of these institutions are NCAA Division II national championships in women’s basketball, women’s cross country, field hockey, men’s lacrosse, women’s lacrosse, men’s soccer, women’ssoccer, women’strackandfield, andmen’sand women’s swimming and diving.

The conference is coming off yet another banner season in 2014-15. The Adelphi women’s lacrosse team repeated as national champions by defeating Lock Haven, 5-4, in the title game. Also, Southern Connecticut’s Chrystle Hill, Georgette Nixon, Sarah Hill and Shatajah Wattely claimed the national title in the 4x400 relay at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships.

When it came to NCAA postseason selections, the NE-10 once again had another sensational year with 48 teams chosen to participate in national tournaments during the year. On top of that, representatives from 34 different swimming anddiving, crosscountryandtrack&fieldteamscompeted for national titles. Of those 48 teams, 13 different Northeast-10 institutions were represented, while nine teams from the conference advancedtoatleastthenationalquarterfinalroundin national tournament play – a new NE-10 record.

From the field of play to inside the classroom, the Northeast-10 honored a number of student-athletes for their academic accomplishments. A record-breaking 73 percent of the league’s 287 athletic teams garnered a team grade point average of 3.0 or higher. Overall, nearly 59 percent of all conference student-athletes earned at least a 3.0 GPA throughout the 2014-15 academic year and were named to the Commissioner’s Honor Roll (CHR) as a result. An astonishing 164 student-athletes earned a perfect 4.0 GPA in the fall before 205 more did so in the spring. The Northeast-10 also honored 247 student-athletes as members of its academic all-conference teams.

The Northeast-10 also remains focused on its community endeavors. The conference has built a strong partnership with Team IMPACT, a non-profitorganizationthatmatcheschildrenwithlife-threatening illnesses with college sports teams. In 2015,theNE-10becamethefirst ‘fully-matched’conference in Division II, as at least one team from each member institution has matched with a Team IMPACT child. More than 60 NE-10 teams currently have matches through Team IMPACT. The conference’s fundraising efforts for Make-A-Wish are also more than any other Division II conference in the country over the past decade.

Through the establishment and enforcement of regulations, the conference aims to encourage policies that enable intercollegiate athletics programs to contribute to and be considered an integral part of the total educational offerings at our member institutions. The Northeast-10 can look to a long history of success including the growth from seven original member institutions to more than double its size 35 years later, the contention for and winning of multiple national championships, and the recognition of student-athlete performances off the fieldandintheclassroom.
