Athletics Director-1st YearJosh Brooks Josh Brooks began his role as the Director of Athletics at Millsaps College on July 7, 2014. Brooks joined the Ma-jors from his position as associate athletic director at the University of Georgia, where he had worked since 2008. Brooks served in several capacities at Georgia overseeing the departments of facility support, graphics & design, turf management and served as the sport facilitator for football. He was in charge of scheduling future games as well as overseeing bowl game operations. His responsibilities also included assisting with the development and management of facilities, new construction projects for the athletic association, and he was also responsible for planning the 2013 Jason Aldean Concert in Sanford Stadium.

Prior to his time at UGA, Brooks served as Director of Football Operations at the University of Louisiana-Mon-roe. He was named the Director of Football Operations in 2004, and in 2007 ULM became bowl eligible for the first time in school history after beating Alabama.

Brooks gained experience as a student at LSU, working as an equipment manager and a student assistant coach. During his four years at LSU, the Tigers participated in the 2000 Peach Bowl, 2002 Sugar Bowl, and won the 2001 Southeastern Conference champion-ship.

A native of Hammond, La., he graduated from LSU with a degree in Kinesiology and completed his Master’s degree in Sport Management from The Uni-versity of Georgia. He and his wife, Lillie, have twin sons, Jackson and James, born in July of 2009 and a third son, Davis, born in March of 2012.

“This is an exciting hire for Millsaps, and we look forward to working with Josh in the years to come,” said Dr. Robert W. Pearigen, president of Millsaps. “He brings tremendous energy to this position, in addition to a wealth of experience and an exciting vision for Millsaps athletics.”

“I believe that success is a science,” said Brooks. “If you have the right conditions, success will follow. I know that Millsaps has the right conditions for success, and I’m excited about the opportunity to help lead the coaches and scholar-athletes to a new level. It’s going to be a new era for Millsaps athletics.”

It is an exciting time to be a Major! The Millsaps’ legacy in men’s and women’s varsity sports is rich, and our goal is to see this richness carried forward and enhanced in 2014-15 and beyond. Helping to make that future success possible is, among others, Millsaps’ new Director of Athletics Josh Brooks, who arrived on cam-pus in July 2014, bringing with him extraordinary energy in addition to years of experience. Athletics at Millsaps are thoroughly integrated into the life and culture of the campus, and we celebrate our student athletes as well as the coaches, faculty, and staff who train, educate, and mentor them. Our 18 sports teams at Millsaps play a key role in creating a dynamic campus atmosphere and in helping our students to develop and hone skills in leadership, self-discipline, risk-taking, and team building—skills that will help them as students and alumni, whose lives are characterized by achievement, leadership, and service. Millsaps teams have experienced outstanding success in recent years—both within our athletics confer-ence, the Southern Athletics Association (SAA), and in national competition—and individual coaches and

athletes have recently been selected for national and conference awards and honors. Perhaps most impressively, however, our success in athletic competition has been met with success in the classroom: last year 153 varsity athletes at Millsaps were named to the SAA Honor Roll. As vital members of Millsaps’ community of scholars, varsity athletes bring honor to their alma mater by their competitive play and academic success. On the fields and courts of athletic competition and in classrooms and laboratories on our campus and throughout the world, Millsaps student-athletes experience the best of a liberal arts education and exemplify the ideals of NCAA Division III sports and the commitments of the SAA, of which Millsaps is a founding member. We are proud of our Majors and grateful for the enthusiastic support of our students, alumni, parents, and friends. Sincerely,

Rob PearigenPresident

Pelch succeeded Mike DuBose, who concluded four years as head football coach before joining the University of Memphis coaching staff in December 2009.

Pelch returned to Millsaps after a stop in the National Football League where he was an assistant special teams coach in 2009 for the Oakland Raiders.

Pelch was a member of the Millsaps College coaching staff as Assistant Head Coach in 2007 and 2008 and Line-backers coach in 2006. During that time period, the Majors won three consecutive Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference titles and had a pair of NCAA Division-III national playoff appearances.

Since taking over as head coach, the Majors have swept the Southern Athletic Association’s offensive and defen-sive player of the year awards. Pelch himself has been named SAA Coach of the Year in both 2012 and 2013 as he guided the Majors to conference championships.

During his years at Millsaps as an assistant coach, Pelch coached six All-SCAC defensive line selections, a First Team All-SCAC linebacker, a SCAC Co-Defensive Player-of-the-Year and a defensive All-America honoree. The team’s defensive line ranked second in rushing defense in the conference in 2006 and improved to first in 2007.

Millsaps gained Special Teams Player-of-the-Year nods for three consecutive years under Pelch’s leadership and had the SCAC’s best net punt average in 2007 (8th nationally) and 2008 (5th nationally). The Majors were also the top SCAC punt return team in 2007 and 2008. Pelch also saw his team receive an All-American selection at special teams.

Pelch has a bachelor’s degree from Weber State University and has coached at New Mexico Highlands University in Las Vegas, N.M., and Everett Alvarez High School in Salinas, Calif.

MAJORS COMPLETE COMEBACKJACKSON- The Millsaps Majors remain undefeated after a wild, come-from-behind 28-27 win over the Centre College Colonels in overtime on Saturday.

Millsaps found themselves down 21-10 with under three minutes to go in the fourth quarter. The Majors’ defense forced a fumble from running back Harry Meisner at the Colonel 33. Majors’ safety Nick Arnold picked up the fumble and returned it to the Centre five yard line. Three plays later, Zak Thrasher ran it in from two yards out to make it 21-16.

The Majors had to go for two to make it a field goal game. Thrasher found tight end Calvin Shaw to cap the off the drive and make it 21-18 with under two minutes to go. Needing an onside kick, the Majors’ Beau Brady popped a beautiful kick that was brought in by Zander Romano. The Majors had the ball back at midfield with 1:50 left.

The Majors went back to work, driving down to the 20 yard line. Brady drilled a 39-yard field goal to complete the come-back and tie the game at 21. Centre wasn’t done yet, driving down to the Majors’ 30-yard line with just over 10 seconds left. An injury to starter Heath Haden brought in the Colonel back-up quarterback. The Majors blitzed, forced an intentional grounding call and forced overtime.

In the extra frame, the Majors got solid runs from Mike Barthelemy and Taz Watson. Thrasher then hit Matt Wahl on a nine-yard strike, add the extra point and it was 28-21 Majors. Centre answered, after a key sack, Haden hit Nick Buten for his only catch of the game, a 36-yard pass to the Majors’ three. Haden then hit Greyson Janeway to make it 28-27. The Colo-nels then rolled the dice and went for two, an option pitch to Harry Meisner was snuffed out by the Majors and Meisner was pushed out of bounds at the Majors seven-yard line to seal the victory and improbable comeback.

The Majors overcame three turnovers to move to 9-0 on the season. Thrasher threw for 318 yards and two touchdowns and two interceptions. What was touted as a matchup of running backs, turned out to be a showcase of run defense. Mike Barthelemy was held to 76 yards on 27 carries while Meisner was held to 46 yards on 23 carries. The two backs came into the game as the top-two rushers in the conference. Zander Romano led the receiving game, hauling in 11 balls for 152 yards and a score, and the onside kick recovery.

Alex Jackson led the defense with 11 tackles while Zack Bell, Jeff Milner and Eric Martin each sacked Heath Hayden. Dustin Harscher had 1.5 tackles for loss on his senior day while Alex Stewart and Joiner Stewart teamed up for a key sack in the fourth.

^First NCAA Playoff game hosted by Millsaps

JACKSON – Third-ranked Millsaps racked up 565 yards of total offense and scored on its first five possessions, and for the first time in 33 years, they are headed to the second round of the NCAA Division III Playoffs with a 51-26 win against LaGrange College Saturday afternoon at Harper Davis Field. The win for Millsaps also marked the first time since 2002 an SCAC team has won in the postseason. Seven different receivers caught two or more passes, including seniors Eric Mc-Carty and Raymece Savage who went for 99 and 93 yards on a combined 17 catches. Junior Tye Menist had a career day with two catches for 52 yards and an 18-yard touchdown reception early in the third quarter. LaGrange (9-2) gave Millsaps all it could handle with its high-powered offense, gaining 488 yards of total offense behind 360 yards passing from QB Drew Carter and a game-high 96 yards rushing from Gerald Reed. Making their first playoff appearance in school history, the Panthers turned in quite an impressive day and season behind head coach Todd Mooney, setting or tying a combined 164 school records. Going over the 40-point mark for the eighth time this season, Millsaps (11-0) took an early 10-0 lead midway through the first quarter behind a 2-yard TD rush from freshman Shane Bowser and a 37-yard field goal from sophomore Taylor Russolino. After going three-and-out on their first two possessions, the Panthers found the equalizer on the ensuing drive behind an excellent 41-yard kick return from Mario Wallace down to Millsaps’ 43-yard line. From there, LaGrange drove the final 43 yards on five plays over 1:39, using a 30-yard hookup from Carter to Devin Billings to bring the score to within three at 10-7 in favor of the Majors. Twenty-one unanswered points for Millsaps over the next 13:40 off a pair of Jo-seph TD tosses and a Kenny Metzger (pictured) 20-yard scamper gave the home team a 31-7 advantage before a 55-yard TD reception from LaGrange’s Eric Miller brought the score to 31-14 at intermission – the closest the Panthers would get. Millsaps opened up a 24-point lead with a quick touchdown drive on its second possession of the third quarter, taking advantage of the short field after holding La-Grange on 4th-and-1 from its own 40. Joseph hit Donnie Epps for 22-yards and then Menist for 18-yards, capping a 2-play, 22 second drive. LaGrange scored off an 8-yard connection from Carter to Miller in the fourth to bring it to 38-20, but 13 unanswered from Millsaps off a pair of Russolino field goals and a 64-yard interception return from Sam Herman sealed the deal for the Majors and made the final 51-26.

#3 Millsaps (11-1) 7 10 3 0 - 20 JACKSON – Senior running back Curt Jones rushed for 208 yards and four touch-downs on 31 carries and senior teammate Bobby Swallow completed 22-of-31 passes for 246 yards, as 19th-ranked Washington & Jefferson outscored Millsaps 21-3 in the second half to upset the 3rd-ranked Majors 35-20 and advance to the South Region Finals next weekend at Mary Hardin-Baylor. In a game that featured two of the 10 national finalists for the 2008 Gagliardi Tro-phy in W&J’s Swallow and Millsaps’ Juan Joseph, both quarterbacks had outstanding afternoons and made strong cases for their spot in the elite company of the nation’s top Division III college football player. Joseph and Millsaps struck first in the game’s opening quarter, as senior Eric McCarty hauled in a 44-yard pass to put the Majors up 7-0 and tie a Millsaps career record with his 20th touchdown reception. Just three plays earlier on 2nd-and-3 from the 30-yard line, Joseph’s 11-yard strike to McCarty helped him move into first all-time on the SCAC’s career passing list at over 9,000 yards. The Presidents knotted the game at 7-7 on the ensuing possession, using three plays and traveling 57-yards over 1:20. After a 30-yard kick return from Joe Mucho out to the W&J 43-yard line to set up good field position, Swallow connected with Craig Besong from 48-yards out down to the Majors’ 1-yard line. From there, Jones punched it in for one of his four scores on the day. Freshman Shane Bowser’s 1-yard touchdown run with just over 13 minutes left in the second quarter helped the Majors retake the lead at 14-7 before a 17-play, 73-yard drive from W&J over 10:54 ended with a 1-yard score from Swallow and tied the game at 14-14 with 2:16 to play in the half. A 67-yard kick return from freshman Gary Davis on the ensuing kickoff, coupled with a 15-yard personal foul penalty, set up Millsaps at the W&J 9-yard line where they would have to settle for a 19-yard Taylor Russolino field goal four plays later just before the half to make the score 17-14. Millsaps extended its lead to 20-14 on their opening drive of the second half, driv-ing 8-plays over 2:38 down to the W&J 8-yard line before having to settle for another Russolino field goal from 25-yards. From there, Jones and the Presidents’ offense took over, outscoring the Majors 21-3 over the final 23 minutes and gaining 263 yards combined through the air and ground. Jones rushed for all three of W&J’s second half scores from 2, 7 and 52-yards out, carrying the ball 16 times for 127 yards for an average of 7.9 ypc. Trailing just 21-20 at the 6:57 mark in the fourth, Millsaps had its chance to get the go-ahead score after putting together a decent drive inside the W&J 30 yard-line. A 1st-and-10 from the 26-yard line turned into a 4th-and-5, with Russolino missing just his second field goal of the season from 38-yards out. Two scores from W&J over the final 1:36, including Jones’ 52-yard burst, made the final margin 35-20, however, the game was much closer than the score read at the final buzzer.
