GLREA’s 2014 Board of Directors welcomes you to the 14th Annual Michigan Energy Fair!

The Michigan Energy Fair layed roots 14 years ago from a seed planted to create a positive future for

Michigan and our neighboring states which surround the Great Lakes.

During the past 14 years, thousands have come together each summer at the fair to learn about renewa-

ble energy, energy efficiency and other practices which lead to a sustainable lifestyle.

During the past 14 years, relationships have been forged, businesses have grown and a sense of commu-

nity has surrounded the fair attendees and exhibitors.

Michigan has a growing economy in renewable energy and

energy efficiency.

During the past 14 years, Michigan joined many other

states in passing a Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS).

GLREA members and the MEF were key players in the suc-

cess of the RPS enactment. As part of the RPS, Michigan’s

Net Metering program was revised and is more beneficial

to electric customers and their contribution to the grid.

The efforts of volunteers and members have brought the energy fair to Michigan. Without the heart and soul of generous members and partner organizations, the MEF would not succeed and the efforts would be in vain. The 2014 Board of Directors wishes to express sincere thanks to the many, many volunteers, members and businesses who spend countless hours each year to make the fair possible and bring invaluable train-ing and education to the public. In Michigan’s ever changing environment, the BOD believes our role in the changing energy environment nationwide, but especially in Michigan, is more important daily. GLREA’s BOD dedicates the 2014 MEF to today’s children, our future leaders. May we educate them to overcome the damages prior generations have caused to our environment and educate them so they can employ new, cleaner technologies, disre-garding politics and to simply do what is right to sustain. Enjoy the fair! 2014 GLREA BOD

Special Events

Scholarship DrawingTh e GLREA Board of Directors has dedicated this 14th Annual Michigan Energy Fair to the younger genera-tion. We have a new generation of thinkers. Th is new generation has brilliant thoughts about how we as a so-ciety can progress and move forward and seek out new ways to fuel our society. Saving energy and harnessing new technology to fuel our society.

Th e law of conservation says: Energy is neither created nor destroyed, it can only be transformed from one state to another.

GLREA Members believe the same about today’s youth. Th ey can be enhanced, and are one of the best investments we can make.

Th e GLREA Board of Directors voted in 2014 to hold the fi rst annual scholarship drawing which would support the youth of today in creating the endeavors of tomorrow. At least 14 GLREA members and friends came together to make it possible for GLREA to award 10 $500 scholarships at the 14th Annual Michigan Energy Fair.

At least 54 of Michigan’s brightest high school grad-uates have been nomitated by STEM teachers for the fi rst annual Michigan Energy Fair Scholarhip Drawing. Th ese students received nominations due to their dili-gence in studies and committment to furthering their STEM education.

Each of these students will be awarded a GLREA mem-bership. Each of these students will have the support of GLREA as they continue their studies.

On Saturday June 28, there will be a drawing in which 10 of these students are awarded a $500 scholarship to be applied to their tuition bill at their choice of higher education.

It is our hope that through donations GLREA is able to award 20 such scholarships at the 15th annual Michi-gan Energy Fair in 2015. Please consider a donation to our 2015 scholarship fund.

To our donors, thank you for believing in our youth. Th ey are our hope for tomorrow.

HIGHLIGHTS

Keynote Address and Book Signing

David Milarch

Co-founder of the Champion Tree Project, David Milarch works to

propagate and preserve the genetic heritage of the world's last old

growth forest giants and save our arboricultural legacy. His work has

been covered by The New York Times, The Washington Post, the Los

Angeles Times, the Chicago Tribune, Forbes, National Geographic,

Smithsonian, The Today Show, Good Morning America, All Things

Considered, and numerous other major media.

A fourth generation nurseryman with four decades

experience in supplying landscape trees for the

national market, Milarch seeks to revitalize

stressed urban and watershed forests with

selected, robust strains. He has propagated more

than 90 species, including the tallest redwoods

and the oldest bristlecone pines. His plantings

grace campuses, botanical gardens, and public

spaces from coast to coast, from the U.S. Capitol

grounds to the Ford Motor Company headquarters

to the Olympics venues in Salt Lake City.

Milarch holds the Garden Clubs of America

Distinguished Service Award, the National

Conservation Medal from the Daughters of the

American Revolution, and the Grant Thornton

Leader and Innovator award from Lawrence

Technological University.

Milarch speaks on forestry and trees, underlining

the role of sustainable forests, buttressed by the

preservation and propagation of key genetic

strains, in protecting our natural environment.
