Meritus Healthcare Foundation’s
The Essential Golf Experience...For Every Golfer.
19th Annual Golf Tournament
Presented by
Thursday, September 18, 2014Penn National Golf Club & Inn
Event Program
Welcome to the 2014Meritus Open! I consider myself to be in good health and have always enjoyed an active lifestyle. I don’t take my good health for granted, but I also don’t give it a great deal of thought from one day to the next. It was not until I was
told that I was pre-diabetic that I began to appreciate the complexity of healthcare and the resources we have right here in our backyard. We
can all take active steps to achieve good health by watching what we eat, getting proper exercise and regularly visiting our physician.
In Washington County, more than 11,500 individuals are struggling with diabetes and one-third of our population suffers from some degree of hypertension. Cardiac disease is still the number one killer
amongst 50-75 year olds in our community. But that doesn’t have to be our legacy.
Today, as you celebrate your good health and enjoy a round of golf with friends and colleagues I ask you to make a promise to yourself and your family to be proactive in taking care of your
health. Having Meritus Medical Center and the various health related services ready to serve my family’s needs at a moment’s notice is reassuring to me.
Your participation in today’s tournament helps make sure Meritus Medical Center has the resources to serve our region’s healthcare needs regardless of the circumstance, today and in the future. Together we are creating a healthier community!

HOW YOUR SUPPORT BENEFITS OUR COMMUNITY Your Foundation — Here to HelpGifts to the Foundation at Meritus Medical Center are tax-deductible and have a tremendous impact on the care of our community. We are here for our patients and we are here for you.

INTERPERSONAL VIOLENCE PREVENTION
Provides support for uninsured or underinsured patients who are unable to afford medical equipment, transportation, medication or other necessary items in order to recover, remain medically compliant and return to being a contributing member of the community.
Cancer patients have unique needs beyond what insurance and Medicare will cover. The Patient Emergency Fund provides needed resources to assist with co-pays, equipment, follow-up screenings, transportation and expenses that create undue burden on a patient already dealing with a significant diagnosis.
Subsequent cardiac events can be prevented if patients follow through with rehab plans but many do not because challenges for financial resources put rehab low on the list of necessary expenses behind food, heat and housing. The assistance fund provides any patient with the resources they need to attend.
This year the stimulation bike in Total Rehab Care spun its last turn. The replacement bike was purchased by contributions to the Foundation. Donors also provided voice recognition software for pediatric rehab patients, play equipment and a new walker for intensive care patients.
Educating Meritus Medical Center nurses is an investment in the very heart of our work. Each patient that encounters a nurse at MMC can be assured the highest level of care. Support provides training for oncology, trauma, domestic violence, pediatrics, rehab and more.
Many in our community require medication to live, maintain their quality of life, or prevent the unnecessary progression of a disease. The Medication Assistance Center is a free service that provides access to no-cost or low-cost prescription medication for uninsured residents of Washington County.
Donors to the Foundation purchased three training mannequins (two adults and one child) to be used for training hospital personnel and school nurses, ten trauma team members were trained and certified by the National Child Passenger Safety Board and thirty car seats were purchased for families in need.
Meritus Medical Center Emergency Services houses a certified Forensic Nurse Examination team able to respond to incidents of abuse and assault. Highly trained nurses respond to victims’ needs as well as evidence collection and testimony to aid in prosecution of offenders.
