Master Builders National Excellence Awards recognise the fi nest from the building and con-struction industry and 2014 is no exception with a showcase of the highest quality achieved by the industry’s best and brightest.

Winners of Australia’s most prestigious building industry and construction awards are recog-nised for projects that are testament to their commitment to excellence.

The National Excellence Awards are drawn from the winners of eight preceding state and territory awards making national winners the best of the best who set the benchmark for the industry nationwide.

Winning projects exemplify inspiration and adherence to the highest standards, bringing to life the vision of clients.

They have conquered challenging locations and conditions, achieved bold and rigorous sus-tainability and workplace safety targets, built homes for people of all abilities and families of all shapes and sizes and provided lifestyle and liveable housing to fulfi l the diverse housing needs of everyday Australians.

This year’s winning projects and their fellow national fi nalists prove that the technical exper-tise and innovation of Master Builders can overcome the seemingly impossible.

Grand visions were also achieved in our built environment with public and private buildings creating more liveable and connected communities.

The opportunity to construct something special that will compel admiration and appreciation from generations to come is a powerful motivator of those who enter Master Builders’ National Excellence Awards.

It is therefore very pleasing to see so many young people appearing in the 2014 awards, not only in the National Apprentice of the Year and National Young Builder of the Year, but also those who excelled in their contributions to award winning teams that produced other nationally signifi cant projects.

They can draw not only on the inspiration of outstanding building and construction projects but on the wealth of knowledge of the national judges who spent countless hours selecting winners from the 5000 best projects built by Master Builders from around Australia whose excellence underpins the calibre of the National Excellence Awards.

The quality of this year’s fi nalists cannot fail to inspire confi dence for our clients that Master Builders deliver the highest quality product for the best value.

National Environment and Energy Efficiency Residential Building Award

Matt Jolley BuilderNew South Wales

The existing brick veneer house was re-used and modified with energy efficiency and the environment high in the design criteria. The initiatives were twofold, the first was to create a low-energy demand through passive design measures, and the second was to create a highly efficient continuous energy system. All external materials were selected for their environmental credentials, including durability against the harsh seaside environment and low-maintenance qualities. Recycled materials were used extensively. The house is now at the forefront of sustainable technological innovation.

This exposed property had significant waterproofing, weathering and safety issues concerning the existing balcony. The project ultimately involved the demolition and reconstruction of the balcony and substantial remedial building works to the existing residence. As well as the new balcony, all sliding doors were replaced, a new kitchen was installed and timber floors were laid. The whole home was painted inside and out. The initial safety problems

have been solved, with the added benefit of a fresh new look.

As a result of fi re damage, this home required extensive reconstruction and transformation. The fi re-affected area involved a series of small pokey rooms that opened up to a three metre by 3 metre alfresco. A new open plan living, dining and kitchen area was created with tri slider doors that seamlessly fl ow though to a now fully tiled alfresco. For the ultimate entertaining experience, the alfresco features a built-in BBQ, sink, hotplate,

National Alteration/Additions Award – $350,000 to $500,000

Elite Homes (Melb) Pty LtdVictoria

This project involved the renovation of a single-fronted Victorian dwelling, with only 150mm separation from the neighbouring dwellings. The building has a very low street impact as the second storey has been set back. The façade of the second storey maintains the integrity of the existing home. Roof lines seamlessly flow from the ground floor to the upper floor. The northerly aspect of the home meant that the builder could capitalise on the

light and sun by installing roof windows and solar lights. Clever design has enabled maximum utilisation of space.

Go Green. Cupolex ticks all the boxes

Cupolex is a patented structural dome concrete slab system made from recycled non-toxic polypropylene. Each dome eas-ily interconnects to create a self supporting structure acting as permanent form work, as an alternative to waffle slab poly-styrene and/or hard fill in your concrete slab. Not only does Cupolex provide an absolute barrier and reduce the potential for rising damp with no capillary action possible, but it also is cost effective.

What is Cupolex?Cupolex is an environmentally friendly and cost effective alterna-tive to Rib Raft, Stiffened Raft and other concrete void systems. Cupolex allows designers, builders and developers to specify a cost effective foundation, which is both green and sustainable. All the while reducing building cycle time and minimising engi-neered fill requirements which can be very expensive.

The name Cupolex comes from the Italian word ‘Cupola’ meaning dome. Millions of square metres of Cupolex have been laid in concrete slabs and foundations throughout the Americas, Australasia and Europe. Inventors of the Cupolex system Pontarolo Engineering have been marketing Cupolex worldwide since 1990. It was originally developed as a solution to ventilate radon gas from new buildings for the US

Air Force in Italy. It is now a requirement for all new construc-tion for the US Air Force. Radon gas is prevalent in areas of Europe and the USA and some parts of Australia. Since its creation, the Cupolex system has been utilised as a solution in a number of different capacities other than its original design.

Cupolex can be used for a variety applications:• Residential, commercial and industrial slabs• Freezer floor slabs• Road constructions• Air recirculation systems• Building renovations in place of hard fill• Sites with high and low weight bearings• Effective solution in flood plane sites

Benefits• Manufactured from 100 per cent recycled plastic• Speedy and easy installation• Can be fully ventilated to reduce power usage• No waste• Standard components that lock together• Reduced safety and environmental hazards• Excellent thermal rating• Reduces carbon footprint• Average home delivery is two pallets• Transport costs reduced• Mitigating rising damp
