4 Madison Street Festi val 2014
Story By Gregg L. ParkerPhotographs By Sarah Brewer
On Oct. 4, 2014, Madison’s populace will convene downtown for a day to celebrate its lifestyles, camaraderie and interests. This day of laid-back revelry is called the Madison Street Festi val.
Former Madison mayors will be Grand Marshals for the 2014 parade. Burwell ‘Sonny’ Wilbanks was in offi ce during the fi rst festi val in 1976; his terms covered 1969-1981 and 1983-1988.
Other former mayors expected to att end are Teague Cuddeback (1988-1991), Don Spencer (1991), Ann van Leeuwen (1991-1992), Charles Yancura (1992-2000), Jan Wells (2000-2004), Sandy Kirkindall (2004-2008), Paul Finley (2008-2012).
Starti ng at Infi nity Skate Park, parade entries will wind through the historic district on Church Street to
the gazebo for opening ceremonies. Bob Jones High School Band will perform.
“We’re so pleased Debbie Hoover is in her third year as parade chair. She’s taking this parade over the top,” Overcash said.
Shutt les will make roundtrips from Madison City Schools Stadium, 211 Celti c Drive, and CrossPointe Church’s new campus, 78 Hughes Road. Overcash acknowledged the city’s generosity to supply stroller- and handicap-accessible shutt les that run all day.
The 2014 festi val is boarding the “food-truck train,” food chairperson Gayle Milam said.
One of those truckies, Café on Wheels Neon Lilly will serve Eastern European cuisine, including Penmen cabbage rolls, kielbasa and sauerkraut, publicist Sharon Holcombe said. Visitors can lunch at the festi val’s ‘Madison Cafe’ at Main/Wise streets, along with snack-and-
sip vendors throughout downtown. North Alabama Vietnam
Helicopter Pilot Associati on and Schnitzel Ranch will serve bratwursts, chicken schnitzel and fried fritt ers. Venice Gelato, Dippin’ Dots and Piper & Leaf arti san iced tea will cool the palate.
Longti me concessionaires Rainbow Mountain Homemakers and Greek Flame Food with gyros will return.
Using visitors’ suggesti ons, MSF organizers have expanded free acti viti es in the Children’s Area for 12-year-olds and younger. The Children’s Tent will have magic, animal balloons, snow, face painti ng, woodworking and ‘green goo.’
A petti ng zoo and pony rides will thrill the kids. Madison Police Department will fi ngerprint children for family security.
“Co-chairman Karen Morris and Pat Cross have seen the MSF Children’s Area grow to over 2,500

Downtown streets, like Main Street, are teeming with thousands of people during the street festi val. Madison Police Departments
esti mated more than 20,000 visitors at the 2013 festi val.

children,” Overcash said. Arti st Alley with juried artwork will be exhibited in
Dennis Vaughn’s shady back lawn, west of Church Street. Co-Chairmen Kathy Lewis and Rosalie Holcombe have assembled an impressive menagerie of talent with painti ngs, pen and ink, charcoal, sculptures, pott ery, handcraft ed furniture and novelti es.
Arts and Craft s will feature about 60 vendors at Church/Maple streets on Madison United Methodist Church’s east lawn, according to chairperson Brenda Parker, who is the MSF Committ ee’s longest serving member.
“I’m just as excited to see the new vendors as well as those who return every year,” Parker said. Vendors will att end from Madison County, Hartselle, Birmingham, Decatur, Athens, Mississippi, Georgia and Tennessee.
Their wares include birdhouses, hand-knitt ed scarves and caps, baby and children’s clothing, bath and body products, hair bows, jewelry, art, pott ery, home decor, pens – even fan pulls fashioned from wood and deer antlers.
“If you need an electric cigar-box guitar, we’ll have them,” Parker said. “The items these craft ers bring are as diverse as the people themselves.”
For live entertainment, the Gazebo Stage and the new Main Street Stage at Sullivan/Main streets will jazz
the festi val atmosphere. Entertainment chairperson Alisha Roberts and co-chair Faye Wishik are scheduling an exciti ng line-up of outstanding local entertainment.
To-date, acts include Abby Wright, The Beasley Brothers, Bob Jones Band, AMC/Sonic Fusion, Groove Band and Dorothy Cole’s Tina Turner Revue.
“We’re fortunate to have informati on vendor chair Lisa Clayton in her fourth year, joined by Kathi Tew and Tina Beacraft ,” Overcash said. “This team works ti relessly to bring Everything Madison in a sampling of retail, healthcare, insurance, building/real estate, non-profi ts, politi cal groups and churches.”
About 75 informati on vendors will line Front Street, with its circa-1900 historic homes as backdrop.
The festi val’s Car Show has att racted Vets with Vett es and other Corvett e owners, along with muscle and vintage cars, trucks and motorcycles. The mayor, police and fi re chiefs, MSF committ ee, fellow exhibitors and children will decide on awards.
In 2013, the festi val gave grants to Rainbow Elementary School’s “Spring Forward” and Multi cultural Fair, $600 each; James Clemens High School Theatre, $1,000; Madison Public Library, $1,000; and Madison Young Marines, $1,500.

• Rainbow Elementary School -- "Spring Into Good Health" program and multi -cultural fair.
• James Clemens High School Drama Department -- "Go Outside and Play" producti on
In additi on, the festi val awards a $1,000 scholarship each to a student at Bob Jones and James Clemens high schools who will att end a technical or trade school.
"Non-profi t organizati ons that could benefi t please apply. So many great groups have benefi ted from funds awarded by the Madison Street
Festi val," Mumaw said. "As the festi val grows every year, we look forward to giving back and awarding more grants than the previous year."
Deadline for grant applicati ons is Oct. 31. The committ ee will award grants during the fi rst week of December.
The fun at Madison Street Festi val will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Oct. 4. The festi val's mission is to provide a day of family entertainment that unites the community while enjoying arts, culture, interacti ve exhibits and entertainment.
