From its start in 1981, iMAGES has continued to improve and increase its content to include the best that Parkland College has to offer. iMAGES was first supported by Joe Harris, then chair of the Department of Humanities. After several editors and an extended hiatus, Prospectus News has taken over the production and promotion of the magazine and has worked with a small team to produce a high quality magazine. iMAGES encourages students to submit their traditional visual arts, graphic design, poetry, fiction, and non-fiction work for review and possible publication in this magazine. The iMAGES team is excited to present another year of great art and design from Parkland’s best and most creative.

iMAGES provides students participating in the making of this magazine hands-on experience in magazine design and production, as well as an exciting chance to judge what content gets published.

Special thanks go out to Parkland College Student Government and the Office of Student Life Activities Program, who make the production of the magazine possible through their continued financial support.

Thanks also goes out to the faculty of the Department of Fine Arts and Department of Humanities, both of which are critical to the ongoing success of iMAGES. Their help in publishing and also encouraging students to submit work has helped to improve this magazine each year.

We would like to specifically thank Editor Sean Hermann, Director Tom Caulfield and Activities Program Manager John Eby for their continued work and support of iMAGES magazine.

iMAGES guidelines: Submissions are accepted from students registered during the current academic year. For iMAGES 2014 that is July 2013–May 2014. Interested students may submit a maximum of (6) works to be considered for publication. A maximum of (3) works per artist will be selected. iMAGES staff members may make the maximum number of submissions, but may neither promote nor judge their own entries. Sick Satisfaction

Sick satisfaction slowly grew across my face.

My smile was like a grotesque, angry branch with many

different directions and angles.

I was sickly satisfied with what I had done.

I wasn’t seeing straight, only the colors of my anger. The reds

and the blacks. My head felt strange. It felt like it was detached

from my body. The room was spinning, my fists were still

clenched.

My smile became bigger turning into a crocked river, with no

certain direction but instead with meandering banks. It grew

ever so slowly, yet I could tell it was there.

Yes, sick satisfaction was indeed slowly growing across my face.

There was no escaping it.

I stared into his eyes, two dark brown pools. I could see his

eyes were searching my face, all the while looking innocent and

unknowing of his crimes. His eyes were like saucers, screaming

in pain. Yearning for sympathy.

His face was red.

His mouth was dry. He was mute.

I couldn’t believe I did it.

I couldn’t believe it happened.

I didn’t want to hear his plea. I didn’t want to hear him say he

messed up. I just wanted him to die… to feel my wrath, to see

just how sick I was.

Page 15: 2014 IMAGES Magazine

9iMAGES2014

My knuckles were turning white, I could feel my balled up fists

shaking. I so badly wanted to do it again. I wanted to scream.

I wanted to yell. I wanted to ultimately crush the universe

beneath my feet.

His face was welting and bruising. He tried to speak. Only a tiny,

inaudible sound escaped from his dried, cracked lips.

“Don’t…”

I couldn’t think straight. Words were foreign to me. I had

become an animal. A tiger, a wolf, a wild beast, a bear. I only

behaved and acted upon instincts. I only operated on survival

mode, wanting to destroy everything in my path that had hurt

me.

My smile of sick satisfaction disappeared into an indescribable

expression. An odd mix of hatred and misery and disgust. I

wanted so badly to feel something more. I wanted to win. I

wanted to feel successful, but instead I felt that anger. That

misery. That disgust.

I couldn’t look at his face anymore. I couldn’t bring myself to say

anything. I felt mute. I felt strange. I yearned to win, to be the

champion. I wanted to feel free like the tiger stalking within me.

Hear me roar.

I walked away, closing the door in his face. I escaped his house,

his questions, and his “innocence.” I felt fearlessness as I braved

the bitter cold winds… I felt ready to open a new door and to

experience what fate has in store for me. I suddenly felt that sick

satisfaction yet again.

Pure Drinking Water

Breath out the last bit of air from my lungs in smoke

and I lost all my sanity from the

fear that my God was watchin’...

Twirl my fingers on key rings and light up the

street signs with runaway lights and scream...

I’m cold and the nights getting old,

and my cars almost outta gas...

Sometimes I put down my hand

at my side, in case someones watching,

I hide what I’ve got to hide, and say to myself

that nobodys watching...caring

Sorry I forgot to lace up my shoes

before I left the door, and tripped on the staircase.

Left my coat on the floor, where tears fell and glasses were broken

My breath mixed with smoke, I’m cold and I’m leavin’

...sorry old town with that sorry old man who walks down the corner

singing to himself cuz’ he’s happy with the beer in his hand,

and the crack pipes at home and waitin’...

Pass my school where the kids were all laughing or fighting

And pass the old house where the ghosts were all hiding

and passed the cemetary, where I sat in my car

With my breath mixed with smoke, and a fear for the stars

that my God is watching...

Apollo

I dreamed I spoke with Apollo

He set his table

And I swallowed the sun

Lit from within

Truth poured out

Like a font

Washing away all I had ever learned

I was forgotten

Light passed through me

I reached out

And tried to catch it in words

To nail it down in a box

So I could give it to you

So we could bask in these rays

You opened the crate

It held only shadows

My words became truths coffin

When life seems hard

And you feel like giving up

Would like to phone a friend

But there’s no one to trust

Don’t give up

Because it won’t be very long

Keep pressing on

Keep pressing on

When you think that life keeps giving you

Nothing but lemons

And it seems like you’ve acquired more

losing

Than winning

Don’t give up

It won’t be long

Keep pressing on

Keep pressing on

When you feel life has nothing to offer

Overwhelmed from drama, work and bills

Don’t be discouraged

For that is NOT in God’s will

Please don’t give up

It won’t be very long

Keep pressing on

Keep pressing on

Your breakthrough is right around the

corner

You may not see it right now but it is

Faith is the substance of things hoped for

The evidence not seen (Heb 11:1)

So hold on to your dreams

Let go of negative things

God didn’t bring you this far to leave you

now

Remember that last incident

Didn’t HE bring you out?

Keep this thought in mind

It won’t be very long

Your change is GOING to come

So keep pressing on

Keep Pressing On

KEEP PRESSING ON

Children

Without Mother’s love,

and Father’s guidance,

we don’t stand a chance.

We are just children, you know.

And we need some attention.

This is not your fault.

It’s the situation,

but we still have to fight it.

We cannot face it alone.

We are just children, you know.

Without love,

we’ll never make it.

Without compassion,

we’ll turn to hatred, you know.

And we are the future, you know.

This is not our fault.

This is our situation.

We still have to fight it,

we cannot face it alone.

We are your children you know.

And we,

we need something to believe in.

And we,

we just want to believe.

We just want to believe.

God in me

I have a question for the God in me

If the God in me is happy

Why am I so sad

If the God in me is a quiet person

Why am I so restless

If the God in me is so forgiving

Why am I hurting so much

If the God in me is so loving

Why do I find fault in others

If the God in me is so caring of all

Why am I so uncaring at times

If the God in me is so detached

Why am I so attached to all

I want myself to be like my God

Happy, content and forgiving

Murder In My Mind

I want so badly that which I don’t have,

I’m always reaching for something.

Reaching out.

I want so badly for you to love me,

so I can feel like somebody,

capable of being loved.

I want to be here and I want to be now,

and I don’t want to go without.

Anymore.

I surrender,

to this moment.

I want to be in it,

and I don’t want to need a reason.

I’m still bleeding.

I’m still bleeding.

It’s always murder in my mind.

Treat Others The Way You Want To Be Treated

You might be having a bad day

So what, someone else is having one too

Please don’t act rude and don’t yell at me

If you prefer that I not be that way to you

We all have trials and tribulations in life

But we have to leave them where they

are not act absurd

Whatever problems you might be encountering

I didn’t create them so I believe that they are yours.

We all use excuses of why we snap

God gave us control just like he gave us senses

So please don’t place your burdens on me

I have no control over what you may be experiencing.

I apologize for your mishap if something is wrong

Although I didn’t cause them, you need to move on

I just prefer to give it to you straight

And I have to keep it real before it’s too late.

For you to let go of that anger

That is keeping you defeated If you think that you deserve

respect think twice

AND treat others the way you want to be treated.

TREAT OTHERS THE WAY YOU WANT TO BE TREATED

Poetically Political

Politics, they make me sick down to my very core

The arguments are all the same and have become a constant

bore.

“Right of left wing?’ “Who’s campaigning?” “Who will win the

vote?”

Doesn’t matter who you chose, we’re still all in the same boat.

We gotta know your political views, Democrat or Republican?

The government will decide for you, you’re no longer just an

American.

America’s fighting a war in the east

But that’s not the only war Americans meet

There’s a war on abortion, gun control, gay rights

There’s a war on immigration and new economical plights.

There’s a war on race, though we pretend it’s not there,

There’s a war on saving the planet, there’s a war on air!

Now I know world peace is not going to come,

To think it will is naïve and dumb.

But in our country we love, in our own homeland

Is there no way to satisfy economical demands?

Can we find a middle ground, ‘stead of fight over every act,

Can we agree on just a few things, while keeping our integrity

intact?

Our fore fathers worked against this division we now have

When disagreements arose they’d come up with a whole new

plan.

The fairness in congress wasn’t supposed to be decided

By whichever political party had the most votes on their side.

They should be working together, giving up this continuous war

They need to be making a great compromise, like they’ve done

before.

Page 69: 2014 IMAGES Magazine

63iMAGES2014

But now everyone’s so focused on number one

They forget you’ve gotta work, to have a little fun.

Instead of sitting, watching, hoping our side wins the fight,

Why can’t we get up and do something, change the world for

what’s right.

If we all work together we might just change the country,

And the country starts with politics, but politics are run by money.

The government isn’t run by morals, laws or ethics you know,

It’s about getting another vote; it’s all just a show.

The more votes you get, the more money comes too

Do you really think any politician cares at all about you?

To say the least, politics are corrupt,

It’s all so hopeless; it just makes me want to give up.

But we can’t give up now, we can’t give up yet

We have to keep on pushing for what we ought to get.

We have to keep on fighting for what’s true and what is right

We have to keep on fighting but not for the sake of a fight.

They can’t make us all happy, so we have to give a little too,

I’m sure what I want from the government is not the same as you.

So in my closing statement, I’d like to make is clear,

You have to pay attention, learn to listen, look and hear.

But above all else,

Learn to choose for yourself!

Don’t buy in to the media; don’t just listen to your friends,

Learn to listen to history; it will surely repeat itself again.

POETICALLY POLITICAL

Ofcina Sans was designed in 1990 by Erik Spiekermann, founder of MetaDesign, Germany’s

largest design rm. Inspired by typewriter faces Letter Gothic and Courier, it was rst

intended for business correspondence produced on low-resolution printers.

CONSTRUCTION DESIGN AND MANAGEMENT

For generations, mechanical drawing and construction design was done by hand, with its own guidelines, style, language, and artistry. Since the early 1980’s, Computer Aided Design has been taught and has now become the standard. Even with technical progress, the style and artistic qualities remain.

Computer Aided Design (CAD) and photos of an installed construction project are combined in this special section of IMAGES 2014. They represent a creative process that may go unnoticed or could remain underappreciated. The following project by members of the Parkland College Student Chapter of National Home Builders Association, is a sample of the artistry that’s nurtured in the Construction Design & Management program.

Most students already have extensive knowledge of construction—materials, safety, best practices, structural integrity, tools and tricks of the trade. Here, from a colorful technical drawing, to hammering and nailing, and in this case planting, pruning, and presentation, the students’ mastery of those skills offers us a little bit of beauty.
